Scottie in Denial: White House Still Clinging to “Same Intelligence” Myth

Yesterday, the final nail was placed in the coffin of the White House myth that Congress saw the same prewar intelligence as President Bush. A Congressional Research Service report found that the Bush administration had access “to a far greater overall volume of intelligence and to more sensitive intelligence information, including information regarding intelligence sources and methods.”

But today, when asked about the CRS report, Scott McClellan pushed the same spin on “same intelligence”:

MCCLELLAN: We provide the Congress a lot of intelligence information, and they did have access to the same intelligence that we saw prior to making the decision to go into Iraq.

In fact, even the White House admits this isn’t true. As McClellan went on to acknowledge a moment later, Congress did not have access to the Presidential Daily Briefs (the intel summaries President Bush receives each morning). The White House says this fact is irrelevant, however, because those briefs were found to be even “more alarmist” and “less nuanced” than the intelligence Congress had:

MCCLELLAN: I saw there’s a reference to the Presidential Daily Brief, where the Silberman-Robb commission already addressed that issue and said that, if anything, that the Presidential Daily Brief was less nuanced than the intelligence that members of Congress saw and that we saw as well.

McClellan is ignoring the elephant in the room: the CRS report states that the discrepancies in intelligence access went far beyond the PDBs, and included “the identities of intelligence sources,” the “methods” used to gather and analyze intelligence, and the “raw” intelligence. Congress never had access to any of this information.

Poor Scottie, clinging to the “same intelligence” myth like a security blanket. Let it go, Scottie. You’ll be okay.

Apologies — due to a technical error, the previous version of this post (and the comments) were deleted.

  2. Marie says:

McClellan’s words and the words of all White House people must be listened to carefully – for what they do not say.
Scottie says Congress had access to the same intelligence — that’s true. Except that the White House had access to more intelligence, different and contradictory, to what Congress was given. In addition to the TP note above, the intelligence was not allowed to be copied, nor was it to leave the building. Ninety pages had to be read under security within a ten-day period.

  6. Punchy says:

#2–”same intelligence” in this context implies inclusiveness of all intelligence. Which is not the case. If he’d said “the WH had the same intelligence as Congress”, it’d be true. But the reverse is most assuredly not. Several items the WH held were NOT available to Congress.

But then, the truth never mattered to the Admin. I’m waiting for Scooter Mac to tell us early next week that the sun does indeed rise in the West, and when called on it, will then call the press corps “unpatriotic” and say the evidence of the sun’s rising is, indeed, confidential.

    On any given Day

    November 6, 2005

The article “2002 report to Bush team discredited Iraq source” by Douglas Jehl seems to be suffering from JMS (Judith Miller Syndrome). Is this article a cover up? Let’s see. The Intelligence Report of February 2002 claim that a captured al-Qaida member, Idn al-Shaykh al-Libi, an expert on biological and chemical weapon, have mislead U.S. intelligence into believing that Iraq had WMDs, thus encouraging President Bush into invading Iraq in 2003. There just one factor that Mr. Jehl left out: the information provided by Libi wasn’t ask of him or cajoled. It was wrung out through torture. It was this information that became the centerpiece of the Bush administration’s claim that Saddam and bin Laden had formed a collaborative relationship, asserting that “Iraq could decide on any given day to provide a biological or chemical weapon to a terrorist group or individual terrorists.” The intelligence community knew prior to the Iraq war that this needed information brought about through torture the prisoner will say anything what the interrogators wanted to hear. Thus the Defense Intelligence Agency warned President Bush that this information was deemed extremely dubious. Of course since the DIA’s intelligence about Libi’s confession proved counter-productive to the president, Bush gladly accepted the ready-made lies from the Pentagon’s Office of Special Plans, Douglas Feith and Chalabi’s spider hole. And as a result the single-minded Bush administration swallows Libi’s desperate lies hook, line, and sinker.

Issue 12 of Volume 34 of Thinkprogress Reports What The Whitehouse Official Spin Appointee Scott McClellan Says Like It Means Something.

Why don’t you write 700 letters to Bill O’Reilly asking him if he thinks Santa Claus is real. After all, there’s no such thing as wasting too much time asking questions you already know the answer to right ?

And the reporters doing this rather than asking questions which could make a difference are actually commended here for their efforts. Much as they did in 2003.

So when Fox News puts two foreign and undeserving words like “Fair” and “balanced” together to describe themselves that’s the hieght of hypocrisy.
Yet here you are using the words “Think” and “Progress” in exactly the same way.

  14. Carl Levin for President says:

  15. gun toting liberal says:

I’m worried that the president and his inner circle have become clinically psychotic. They don’t seem to exist in the same state of reality as the rest of us.

When confronted with proof of their earlier lying they don’t react, just blandly repeat the discredited lie. Their supporters suffer the same paranoid thought process and continue parroting the White House’s talking points in a loud chorus of “I’m not here, this isn’t happening” from the Right.

And yet, it IS there for all to see. The Senate’s own bipartisan panel, and indeed the White House staff themselves, cannot deny the plethora of classified intelligence the president and his inner circle have access to which is unavailable to members of the House and Senate. It cannot be refuted.

    And yet they refute it.

I’m serious, folks, this sends a chill down my spine. When human beings behave this way they have broken from reality and can be exceptionally dangerous.

    Especially when cornered or threatened.

  24. Bat Wielding Moonbat says:

    Comment by Marie

Nonsense. I’ve seen no list of evidence that could be deemed contradictory to what congress was allowed to see. Please note the word allowed. With all the leaks that emanate from the Filthy Left side of the isle and the contrarians to treasonous nature of the leakers they are lucky to have been given anything. That’s a sad state of affairs when you can’t trust national security to 50% of the elected officials. But that’s the way it is and the fact was writ large by Clinton when he sold us out to the Red Chinese for a few hundred thousand in illegal campaign contributions.

I think we need to take the entire Democratic Party and throw the lot in prison working our way down through the scum of Liberal bureaucrats and self styled Marxists in the media and academia. Only then we’ll be safe.

    #49, You’re mistaken.
Perhaps Fox News or Limbaugh does not report it, but it’s pretty well understood that the president does indeed have access to intelligence far exceeding that which congress is allowed to see. Why wouldn’t he?
So, it is not nonsense — it is fact. Check it out. Write your congressman and ask.
You make a huge error when you take what Limbaugh and Fox say as factual — just review what O’Reilly and Hannity have said in the past week. Just review what Limbaugh has said in the same period. They are not sources for information, they are sources for propaganda–don’t believe them.
What I say about the President and intelligence is a fact.

“Nonsense. I’ve seen no list of evidence that could be deemed contradictory to what congress was allowed to see. Please note the word allowed.” MizzWrong

I’ll give you a short one.

    1) They didn’t have the briefing sheets that showed the only person who ‘tied’ al qaeda to Iraq had been tortured to obtain that information.

    2) They didn’t receive the ‘caveats’ from the intelligence personnel that disagreed with the ‘mobile weapons’ assessments.

    3) They didn’t receive the ‘caveats’ from the intelligence personnel that disagreed with the ’state’ of the WMD machine.

In otherwords, all they received was the ‘final briefing’, and none of the intelligence or intelligence assessment to disagree with it.

The fact you’re too retarded to know, read or determine this is without question. But your ignorance doesn’t change the fact, it just makes you look stupid as always there rube…

  57. Ryan Neat says:

    #57,

They aren’t really capitalists, they’re ‘fascist corporatists’. A capitalist believes in a free and level playing field, whereas a fascist (eg. a republican) actually believes in using government for corporate welfare and to de-level the field. It’s why they give so many special industry taxbreaks that only affect the large companies that contribute to them, but adversely affect entrepreneurs and those who actually believe in capitalism.

As much as they claim all sorts of odd things, the truth is that:
    republicanism=anti-capitalism=fascism.

  58. wwallace says:

Marie, do you have an example of some information the president had that the Democrats in Congress did not have?

The Democrats said Iraq was a threat. The Democrats said Iraq had WMD. The Democrats said Iraq was a supporter of terrorist groups. 60. Armando Gomez says:

MR. RYAN NEAT: THIS IS FOR YOU AND ONLY YOU (I ORIGINALLY SENT IT TO MY FAVORITE RADIO HOST):

    Mr. Ward,

My name is Armando Gomez, an ardent listener to your nightly radio spot. Right now I’m putting together this email for you as I’m listening to your program, and I may have the answer to the confusing question why Americans are voting against their own self interests. And the basic answer is that their (White America) sense of history and self-worth has come into question. To them this is unacceptable—at any and all cost; which is what’s happening at this moment. Realistically, all this began to manifest when Ronald Reagan was elected as president. But in all honestly, I believe it really started with the Vietnam War and its shocking and unacceptable conclusion: we lost. And it wasn’t just the war we lost—we also lost our president, Richard Nixon. This sent a shock wave, border to border and coast to coast of White America. This proved that the war was a phony and President Nixon a liar. This forced Americans to question the very core of their moral foundation and their sense of purpose—their purpose of self-righteous, which they believe is their destiny and guided by the Light from above. All this imploded when Nixon tanked. But within a couple of years a new and up coming Right Wing movement (the neo-conservatives) went to work, scoring one victory after another in their religious sectors, in their communities. And I believe all this was spearheaded by the Heritage Foundation. The Foundation’s tactics: Accuse the liberals of anti-family, anti-God, anti-America, anti-mother, anti-marriage, anti-fetus and in short: anti-liberal all around. With the help of the “liberal” media they made the word liberal an expletive (remember the “L” word?). And all this was funded by the multi-right wing millionaires and corporations. And I believe you know who and what they are. What this movement accomplishes was to exonerate America of its failures, and blame “The Fall” on the dirty, rotten, and back-stabbing liberals. And these Americans went for it, hook, line, and sinker. They had no choice: To accept otherwise, they would have to question their entire “white” history. Without this history—or myth—they will have to accept a more realistic one—according to Ward Churchill. White Americans found that to be totally unacceptable. And for these Americans they are ready to accept any politician, any judge, and any president—any lie—that’ll tell them what they want to hear, especially when Jesus Christ is now considered as part of their American history. That’s why they are more than ready to believe such phonies as Reagan, the first Bush, and this latest disgrace, Bush, Jr. But with the present Americans, it gets worse: they are willing to sacrifice their children’s and their grandchildren’s future, just so they can either be swept up by the Rapture in time or die in their sleep; the complete misery of others had become their sinful and foremost pleasure. Mr. Ward, to me these are the worst and the most rotten cowards any nation unfortunately is straddled with; stinking vermin who aren’t fit to be scurrying about. Their malicious intentions toward Social Security, Medicare, pensions, childcare, the Iraq War and the support for the bankruptcy bill are but short examples of how far these Americans have sunk. The talk I hear is that these Americans are the dumbest pile of rocks on the planet. Wrong: It’s worse. Sept. 11 and the Iraq War only provide further excuses for these self-proclaimed “patriots” to stab their fellow neighbors in the back by trying to dismantle our civil rights—and are the first to turn against our war heroes like John McCain and Max Cleland in a second; a knife behind the door. To them, this further justifies the degradation to our veterans, the hacking away at their medical and financial benefits while allowing fantastic tax breaks go to the rich and corporate America who wouldn’t lift a finger to help our veterans or our nation. So, for these pro-veteran and pro-morality Americans to believe in this new White Direction, provided by the ultra-extreme Republicans, it all proves that they have gone soft between the ears and soft between the legs. In short, STARK, RAVING PSYHOCITICS, not stupid. It’s important to understand this. This is the very core why they can’t or won’t be reached. For any animal can be “educated” —even a flatworm. I’ll give you a short one.

    1) They didn’t have the briefing sheets that showed the only person who ‘tied’ al qaeda to Iraq had been tortured to obtain that information.

What’s your point? Any idiot would make a connection between one Muslim hater of America with another. Hard evidence to tie Saddam to any al quada “operation” would require and inside man. Your buddy Clinton made sure we didn’t have the assets in place and Gorlick made sure any info that might be useful wasn’t shared between the intelligence services.

Your short list is meaningless in light of the information they did have and the mandate of the American people and Saddam’s refusal to cooperate after years of trying.

The fact you’re too retarded to know, read or determine this is without question. But your ignorance doesn’t change the fact, it just makes you look stupid as always there rube…

    Armando,

Take it as a compliment that he couldn’t find one single point in your entire email to bash. It was well written and coherent, based in facts and the reality of our political situation. I enjoyed it.

And if you are from Mexico, he’s just jealous that you have a far better command of the English language, and the American political system than he does.

You made the point ‘any idiot’, is the correct answer. A smart person would realize that Iraq was a secular government, and that he was distrustful of islamists. But since you’re an ‘idiot’ like the rest of the NeoCons, logic and rational arguments make no sense to you.

As for the inside man, didn’t you read the 9/11 commission report? That’s EXACTLY who they had, and they tortured him for the false answers…

“Your buddy Clinton made sure we didn’t have the assets in place”

The CIA was run by a republican… No dice loser. And it was CHENEY who cut their budgets… Once again, you’re a retarded loser!

“and Gorlick made sure any info that might be useful wasn’t shared between the intelligence services.”

Not true, this has already been debunked by the 9/11 commission… Were you always this stupid, or did you just go insane when your wife left you for another man? Or did she leave you for another woman who was more ‘masculine’ than you? It would explain a lot!

“Your short list is meaningless in light of the information they did have and the mandate of the American people and Saddam’s refusal to cooperate after years of trying.”

Meaningless? Bahaha, that’s psychotic. It’s completely meaningful, because without those intelligence lies, americans wouldn’t have believe the 9/11 connection, and the mandate wouldn’t have existed (just as it does not exist now despite the continued lies of the Corporate Press). Iraq was about israel, the rapture, oil, and the psychotic need of a man to ‘one up’ his father. Iraq is a boiling fester of lies, misdeeds and misrepresentation from day one.

“The truth of the matter is NOTHING would have satisfied the Filthy Left. That’s why we ignore you.”

If you ignored us, you wouldn’t be here. Your entire response is contradictory. You don’t ‘ignore’ us, you fear us because we’re better, smarter, more moral and better human beings you are. We shame you, and you hate us for it!

The truth of the matter is Filthy Right has no morals, no values, no responsiblity, no belief in america, no belief in the constitution, and no sense of decency. That’s why in the end you will stop yourself through your own failures – it always happens with the reichwingers :()

Does anyone think the Bush administration purposely ignored the PDB warning that bin Laden is planning a terrorist attack on American soil, in order to be provided the excuse to invade Iraq? It’s been in my mind for about a year. Seeing that there are no lengths to which this “administration” will go to further their agenda, they might have thought the attack would be similar to the first attack on the WTC where the damage was minimal. I don’t think they thought of the horrific attack that was conducted and decided to let it happen. I think they thought it would be on a smaller scale, but they could use it as an excuse to invade Iraq.

I don’t think I’m a crazy conspiracy person. Heck, all the things they’ve done so far, I’m not surprised about. This wouldn’t be that far from reality considering what they have done, and are doing now.

Now that’s depressing. How stupid do you have to be to think Ryan “FMFB” Neat is wise? Dear Lord girl you must be in one hell of a depressed condition to equate anything that troll says with wisdom. But I have the cure for you…just forward a picture and a recent medical STD exam.

    Semen acts as an anti-depressant
    Exclusive from New Scientist

Semen makes you happy. That’s the remarkable conclusion of a study comparing women whose partners wear condoms with those whose partners don’t.

The study, which is bound to provoke controversy, showed that the women who were directly exposed to semen were less depressed. The researchers think this is because mood-altering hormones in semen are absorbed through the vagina. They say they have ruled out other explanations.

“I want to make it clear that we are not advocating that people abstain from using condoms,” says Gordon Gallup, the psychologist at the State University of New York who led the team. “Clearly an unwanted pregnancy or a sexually transmitted disease would more than offset any advantageous psychological effects of semen.”

    Suicide attempts

His team divided 293 female students into groups depending on how often their partners wore condoms, and assessed their happiness using the Beck Depression Inventory, a standard questionnaire for assessing mood. People who score over 17 are considered moderately depressed.

The team found that women whose partners never used condoms scored 8 on average, those who sometimes used them scored 10.5, those who usually used them scored 15 and those who always used them scored 11.3. Women who weren’t having sex at all scored 13.5.

What’s more, the longer the interval since they last had sex, the more depressed the women who never or sometimes used condoms got. But the time since the last sexual encounter made no difference to the mood of women who usually or always used condoms.

The team also found that depressive symptoms and suicide attempts were more common among women who used condoms regularly compared with those who didn’t. The results will appear in the journal Archives of Sexual Behavior.
