Alito will be 7 votes short, too. Will they start to notice it’s over now?

  4. JIMBO says:

You’re pinched! No, you’re not dreaming.
    IT’S A MIRACLE!!!!!!!! :)

  5. David says:

Wow. Finally, a little return of sanity to a benighted legislative body.

  6. Spudge_Boy says:

“The vote was the second legislative setback for Bush in as many days. Yesterday, Bush reversed course and accepted a ban on torture crafted by Senator John McCain, an Arizona Republican.”

“Democratic leaders and some Republicans led the drive to sustain a filibuster, a parliamentary maneuver that allows endless debate. Republicans control the Senate by a 55-45 margin, and it takes 60 votes to overcome a filibuster.”

    The party’s over.

I guess the Democrats finally found their spines. Maybe they were accidentally packed with their “Holiday” (that’s for you BOR) decorations and they just found them.

  7. unbelievable says:

We should find out whose responsible and send thank you messages. Make sure they know how much we support this and encourgae them to keep up the good work!

This is the best news I’ve heard all day … kudos to Sen. Feingold and Harry Reid for rallying the “troops” and hanging tough. May I daresay a little ray of hope at the end of this utterly dismal year?

slowly but surely , rational toughts and behaviours triumph over evil doers . The administration is in trouble …they do not have the majority they could count on anymore . It seems to me a filibuster of Alito is more possible than ev- er . The Dems better get their asses together . The specter of a third party is very much alive . A Demogratic Progresssive party is not out of question

May God save our great nation from the stupid actions of democrats. Hey – the terrorists have won, pass it on. Good luck New York or L.A. on your future attack. Hope not too many people die but we just have to have our frickin liberties here.

  15. CarolSoprano says:

New York Democrat Charles Schumer, who had said he had been leaning toward opposing the filibuster, said a New York Times report that the National Security Agency had eavesdropped on Americans’ telephone calls without warrants since the Sept. 11 terror attacks changed his mind.

“Today’s revelation that the government listened to thousands of conversations is shocking and greatly influenced my vote,” Schumer said.

I’m ashamed of my senators … Clinton and Schumer need a rude awakening. I’m so glad the Times article “changed his mind” – I can’t believe he wasn’t concerned about the provisions in the Patriot Act until now. What are these “liberal senators” thinking?

How can anyone argue that the Bush adminstration has America’s security interests at heart when such grave and obvious threats have gone unaddressed, i.e. the unsecured loose nuclear material in the former U.S.S.R., vulnerable chemical plants in our own country, unprotected rail systems, uninspected cargo entering the country… etc. etc.

  18. HOT! TIP! says:

    M. Duchamp , Thats my Point. Consider it a Hot Tip.

  19. CarolSoprano says:

#16, I hate to burst your bubble but this was a bipartisan effort, not just stupid actions by the democrats. This law is flawed and has to go and even level-headed Republicans agree:

Today’s Senate debate and vote reflected deep divisions that cut across party lines in ways rarely seen. For instance, Senator Larry Craig, a conservative Republican from Idaho who would be expected to support President Bush on most issues, opposes the present form of the Patriot Act.

  20. Spudge_Boy says:

“In a crucial vote early Friday, the bill’s Senate supporters were not able to get the 60 votes needed to overcome a filibuster by Sens. Russ Feingold, D-Wis., and Larry Craig, R-Idaho, and their allies. The final vote was 52-47.”

Weird, the bloomberg article link by TP states 55/45 vote. The AP is reporting 52/47 vote.

  21. B. McFarland says:

So Frist voted for it before he voted against it. What a flip-flopper!

#22.bipartisan effort??? Whats so Bipartisan About it??? It Divides Dems from Repubs, Thus , just stupid actions by the democrats. This law is flawed and has to go and even level-headed Republicans agree:

What is the Difinition of Bipartisan?

  24. Spudge_Boy says:

    Hot Tip!,

What CarolSoprano is trying to say is that it wasn’t just Democratics that voted this down, Republicans voted it down also. This wasn’t a split down party lines. It was Bipartisan.

” The official vote on the filibuster-ending motion was 52-47. Frist had cast the 53rd vote in favor of ending debate, but switched sides at the end to preserve his options under Senate rules for calling for another vote.”

    This one’s for Frist:

    null

  25. Theresa says:

#23, I thought that too, but after rereading, the 55-45 indicates the number Resluglican vs. Democrat senators in the senate. Not the result of the vote. Here it is:

“Republicans control the Senate by a 55-45 margin, and it takes 60 votes to overcome a filibuster.

The official vote on the filibuster-ending motion was 52-47. Frist had cast the 53rd vote in favor of ending debate, but switched sides at the end to preserve his options under Senate rules for calling for another vote.”

  26. David B says:

  32. CarolSoprano says:

Thanks, Spudge! Looks like the defense appropriations bill is in trouble too if Sen. Stevens insists on adding the Arctic Drilling provision to it … another bipartisan effort:

A group was drafting a letter to Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist (R-Tenn.) saying that senators “ought not to exploit . . . the well-being of our troops” to advance the drilling measure.

Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.), a drilling opponent, said he wasn’t sure how he would vote if the bill included the drilling measure.

“That’s the dilemma,” McCain said in an interview. “I think it’s disgraceful I have to be put in that position.”

Sen. Norm Coleman (R-Minn.), another drilling opponent, said that adding the measure to the military appropriations bill would make the vote “very uncomfortable for me.”

  33. CarolSoprano says:

#33 – point well taken. I just wanted to point out that the usual wingnut arguments weren’t going to work here because a few clear-minded Republicans also actually think the Patriot Act is no good and decided to do the right thing.

  34. Napu says:

    nofreedom,

I agree with your second post, but not your first.

My issue is in the use of absolutes… words that imply 100% totality such as always, never, all, everyone, no one… We don’t live in that world. There’s always an exception somewhere, even if you don’t know it. Yet, conservatives routinely use these words, especially in ideological notions of good and evil.

It’s too bad that the NYT article on illegal domestic spying is what pushed some Senators over. They should have been railing against the PA since its inception; it was passed in haste with little forethought, it is an anti-democratic, fascist act that must not be inflicted on the USA.

  53. unbelievable says:

#53 How many terrorist attacks have there been on American soil? And how many died? I’m gonna assume you know the answers are one and nearly 2,000. That’s in all of our 229.5 years as a nation.

Okay, now, how many people die daily from smoking related cancers? Thousands.

You have a greater chance of dying from chain smoking (or second hand smoke if you don’t light up yourself) than you do of being killed by a terrorist. So, if you want to battle a real issue, go visit http://www.Marlboro.com

  54. jbos says:

What supporters of the Patriot Act don’t realize is that if you let a few civil liberties get swept under the carpet it’s an open invitation to restrict freedoms as the powers that be see fit. I consider any enemy of the fourth amendment un-American. Ouch, I guess that hurts when your nasty conservative rhetoric gets thrown back at you.

  55. unbelievable says:

    Marie,

I’ve heard that they didn’t even read the initial Patriot Act before passing it… And they probably wouldn’t have read any of this version if we the people hadn’t been making such a stink about it.

  60. Meow says:

The fight’s not over from the sound of it, just delayed. What I find ironic is that this administration wants more surveillance at the sacrifice of our rights when they ignored the intel that 9/11 was immanent, ignored other intel that refuted their ideology that Iraq was a threat, and have yet to act on intel that shows areas of security weaknesses the US still has (How can anyone argue that the Bush adminstration has America’s security interests at heart when such grave and obvious threats have gone unaddressed, i.e. the unsecured loose nuclear material in the former U.S.S.R., vulnerable chemical plants in our own country, unprotected rail systems, uninspected cargo entering the country… etc. etc. – Comment by M. Duchamp )?

This administration has been a shining example of what results when one doesn’t act on quality information (obviously before the Patriot Act) and ‘fixes’ (notably wrong) intel to justify their preordained actions. There is no justification for the Patriot Act, period. If our leaders can’t utilize what they get with any efficiency and fish for the crap they need to justify their actions, the only people at risk, are the American People.

I hope our legislative leaders can maintain reason and not re-enact the Patriot Act.
