Bush Ignores His Own Advice on Timetables

At the outset of his speech tonight, Bush said, “I know many Americans have questions about the cost and direction of this war.”

But the President failed to answer the question that is foremost on the minds of most Americans — when are the troops coming home? Instead, he said the following:

I will make decisions on troop levels based on the progress we see on the ground and the advice of our military leaders – not based on artificial timetables set by politicians in Washington.

Bush has failed to follow his own advice from 1999:

I think it’s also important for the president to lay out a timetable as to how long they will be involved and when they will be withdrawn. [6/5/99]

The troops aren’t coming home until Bubble boy is impeached.

There is way too much oil to be had in Iraq.

P.S. Thinkprogress has been very busy today, good job.

  4. unbelievable says:

Once again, in his speech, Bush failed to say anything. All he did was blame – this time Saddam for choosing to start this war. What with those invisible WMDs? With a direct attack on Americans? With deploying troops to Delware?

wE know WHERE THE money went George.

What is it about thIS ‘educATED’ Moron and their\his Money?
Once again BUSH puts Money before the Lives of the Soldiers??
I have question about the direction of your MIND George..
    Have you LOST it?
    KING? George?

  6. Opie says:

Bush isn’t going to answer this question because he won’t verify what more and more people know — that we’re in Iraq for the remainder of his presidency and, if he had his way, for another generation or more after that.

  7. Corey says:

I find it interesting that MSNBC chose to have Keith Olberman cover the speech. In stead of say, Mathews. Could it be that MSNBC is just as tired of the bullshit as we are and decided to use the one anchor they have that won’t drip over every word Bush say’s? Bravo MSNBC

There’s an 18 year old senior in my first period class who went through Army boot camp last summer. When he graduates in May, I have little doubt that he will be shipped to Iraq. He’s a sweet, responsible, caring kid. He wants to serve his country for all the right reasons. But, instead he will be sent to fight in a pre-emptive war based on faulty ‘intelligence’. How that falls a distance second to his need to ‘keep his word’ – whatever nonsense that means – genuinely makes me angry and most of all disgusted. Tomorrow, we all need to write to our Representatives. And keep writing until we see action.

  10. WORFEUS says:

    Hey unbelievable,

You said the magic word. pre-emptive war .

Let me take this out for a quick ride.

Lets say I am walking down the street, in any state in the country. And lets say I see someone, maybe it’s someone I know. And lets say this person has threatened me in the past, maybe even threatened to kill me.

Now I see him walking down the street, on the opposite side of the street from me.

I think that he may hit me, or hurt me someday, so I cross the street, walk up to him and punch him right in the mouth.

Now when the police arrive, and I tell them that I just launched a pre-emptive strike, what do you think they’re gonna to do me?

  11. WORFEUS says:

    Question,

Why are the laws that 300 Million of us have to live by good enough for us, but not for him?

Bob, whatever that is, it really takes up a lot of space, and helps distract from the ebb and flow. Maybe some formatting? Just a thought:D

  14. WORFEUS says:

WORFEUS predicts that Iraq will become 3 states.

1 Sunni, 1 Shite, and one Democratic.

The democratic state, will be protected and defended by US forces.

The other two will be on their own.

  15. Lindal Cossey says:

One of the arguments that BushCo has made of late, and made again tonight was that wars cannot be executed according to a timetable… I’m just glad FDR and Eisenhower didn’t know that or we’d all still be waiting for D Day.

  16. JIMBO says:

Bubble Boy was really saying this:

“Are American soldiers are sacrificing their lives for us. And because they’re dying for us, our Iraqi friends (the western-learned version)and for Halliburton, we consider them heroes. Even if they die from friendly fire, they are still heroes.”

“We don’t have a plan yet to bring our heroes home yet, but when we do, we will plan to let you know when we will think about bringing them back home as long as I’m God, I mean President.”

That’s what Bubble Boy is thinking. No wonder more of our soldiers will die.

  17. wwallace says:

Why does Faiz support Clinton’s wars of aggression in Kosovo, and presumably in bosnia, since those countries posed no security threat to the US whatsoever, had no WMD, and were not an “imminent threat.”

Democrats prove again they have no standards.

  18. Giacomo says:

How that falls a distance second to his need to ‘keep his word’ – whatever nonsense that means – genuinely makes me angry and most of all disgusted.

What do you suggest he do? Are you suggesting he go to Canada or the like?

Ryan, maybe you should post all of your Republican anti-war quotes here as well?

Giacomo, do you know anyone who is or has been on the front lines in this war?

What do you suggest he do? Go die or be maimed in Iraq because of “faulty intelligence”?

  22. Innocent Bystander says:

I have an idea. Let’s get Barb and Jenna in uniform and shipped to the front lines in Iraq. Let’s see then how fast the war winds down then.

I signed a petition last month or two that urged exactly that. Not just the twins, but all of the Representatives kids. Only one is actually serving. But it’s still a great idea, and a great point – thanks for mentioning it.

  24. Ryan Neat says:

The only thing consistent with Republicans is their hypocrisy.

“You can support the troops but not the president”

    -Representative Tom Delay (R-TX)

“My job as majority leader is be supportive of our troops, try to have input as decisions are made and to look at those decisions after they’re made … not to march in lock step with everything the president decides to do.”

    -Senator Trent Lott (R-MS)

For us to call this a victory and to commend the President of the United States as the Commander in Chief showing great leadership in Operation Allied Force is a farce”

    -Representative Tom Delay (R-TX)

  25. Ryan Neat says:

Republicans Nazis like wwallace licked their lips at genocide, and preferred to do nothing, yet they’ll fabricate a case for war as long as there’s oil to be had…

Republicans are unamerican, and inhumane. They’re retarded monkies unworthy of citizenship!
