  1. Carl Levin for President says:

FISA is not sufficient enough for the War on Terror. It is inadequate in light of modern technology.

    -Gonzalez

What the hell does that mean?

  2. Joe Sixpack says:

Sounds exciting. But the redneck part of me don’t give a shit. Two speaches from junior in 12 hours is too much to take.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but I’ll be down at the bar washing down a breakfast of pickled eggs with beer with the other conservative pricks I hang out with.

  3. Feingold is a Hypocrite says:

Liberals hate it when Bush defends himself.

  4. Joseph says:

  5. zmark says:

He should really leave that to his lawyers.

  6. Pete Bogs says:

what the? it’s Bush overload! I guess he’ll give the press a chance to ask him questions that they couldn’t last night during his talking head address… and he’ll dodge as always…

  7. Ron says:

Is anybody listening to this dolt?

I know I’m not. I’ve had enough of George Bush, the talking points, blah, blah, blah.

It’s over George. Take it somewhere else.

Bring home the troops and try some peace.

    War obviously doesn’t work.

    Ho, Ho, Ho

    Merry Christmas

  8. mister hanky says:

very odd. he doesnt normally do this kind of thing too often.
is he going to announce something? maybe something to do with Iran, maybe?

  9. RunningDogLackey says:

This is all part of the Andy Card/Karen Hughes program of trying to make Bush appear more like “real” presidents — ones who were actually elected, didn’t fear their own voting populace and had visions for the US somewhat grander than “show Pappy I’m smart, like Jeb.”

  10. Quisp says:

I wonder why. Does anyone think this press conference will be to announce that he prefers his Wild Turkey neat?

  11. mister hanky says:

in the wake of the iraqi elections, wild guess – ultimatum to Iran along the lines of “get rid of your Islamic government or else”. saber rattling in response to the Iranian presidents holocaust denials.

  12. Andy in DE says:

President Bush is doing a good job presenting the Admin’s view of the War on Terror. The NSA program is all hype for the NYT reporter’s book due out. The American people are not going to be upset because of actions immediately after 9/11. AND now that we know Bush informed Congress including Pelosi, there is really no cover up.

This will fit perfectly into the left’s storyline that Bush is a fascist, but to most people – it’s much ado about nothing. People want to win the war and they know it’s not always going to be pretty – unlike most liberals who are detached from reality and in denial.

  13. Giacomo says:

FISA is not sufficient enough for the War on Terror. It is inadequate in light of modern technology.

It means that some satellite phones have the ability to change their signature in a moment … it means that e-mail addresses and websites can be opened or closed in a blink … it means that the time between gaining an opportunity (to eavesdrop) and losing that technology is minutes, not days.

Is anybody listening to this dolt?

I would hope everyone is listening … just because you don’t agree with him shouldn’t mean you ignore him. Heck, you should listen MORE in that case.

  14. cdad says:

FISA is not sufficient enough for the War on Terror. It is inadequate in light of modern technology.

    -Gonzalez

Then change the f*cking law!!! Gonzalez makes us spics look bad.

  15. zmark says:

All Bush has to do to people like Andy is show them something shiny and they fall in line. They are so scared of the big bad terrorists that they will let thier own government spy on its citizens. What a bunch of frightened children.

  16. Anti Warhol says:

#13 In all seriousness, that’s why FISA warrants have a 72 hour grace period.

Under existing law, you can tap a phone immediately, in real-time, without a warrant as long as you apply for the warrant within three days, and almost no FISA warrants are ever denied, especially not retroactively.

This has been the law since the 70’s, there is no real (or legal) reason to circumvent it. It’s just hubris, really.

  17. progressive and proud says:

We have him running now. He is backpeddling and doesn’t do it very well as he can’t articulate.

How about that Cheney saying he doesn’t have to go by a law that is outdated? 1978? Nice try. Actually, very weak and very thinly vieled try.

Thier treason is rapidly coming to light and there is really no stopping the train.

  18. mister hanky says:

oh dear god. i hope this isnt true.

iran has nukes already, according to CIA director:

    http://stevequayle.com/News.alert/05_Nukes/051116.Iran.has.nukes.html

let us all pray that the President just announces something about the CIA leaks, rather than a declaration of war.

  19. Dave says:

#13 Yes this is true but that still does not explain the complete lack of trying to work within the FISA structure where possible. Had he done this he could claim upholding the sprit of the law, still getting the job done and kept his ass out of the fire.

Unfortunately he ignored the law completely and now has the impression to the world of regarding himself above the law.

  20. Joe Sixpack says:

Well, heck, guacamole #13. As a redneck conservative myself, maybe I ought to listen to what junior is going to say.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but do you think he will say anything about the latest figures from the Congressional Appropriations that not that junior’s Iraqi War has now cost $227,551,775,000? That’s $2,047 for each household so far in the entire United States.

I mean, I don’t know about you but $2,047 buys a hell of a lot of beer and gas for my truck. If spending that kind of money attacking Iraq in retalliation for 9-11 makes you feel better, maybe we should have all taken that money and flown to Hawaii for a week and gotten over it. At least I for one, would have felt better.

  21. hardass says:

They gone put more ;ipstick on that steer and what’s comin out is more BULL .

  22. Carl Levin for President says:

The NSA can spy for up to 72 hours legally without going through the courts.

What the hell does that mean?

Does it take 72 hours for a satellite phone to change signature?

Do you really think I give a rat’s ass about Pelosi?

  23. profmarcus says:

bush’s speech last night clearly demonstrates he doesn’t get it…

i’m not “despairing…” i’m goddam pissed… i’ve been in a nearly constant state of rage for over 5 years… the only despair i’m feeling is that this criminal gang is still in office…

“I do not expect you to support everything I do,” Bush said in remarkably personal terms. “But tonight I have a request: Do not give in to despair, and do not give up on this fight for freedom.”

the truly bizarre thing is that the man is getting praised for being “candid…” this may perhaps be one of the few speeches where the arrogant bastard has shown willingness to be anything other than a blustering, over-confident cowboy and he’s getting PRAISED for it…? puh-leeeeze… and now we get to watch him spew more bullshit in his press conference…? gimme a break…

    http://takeitpersonally.blogspot.com/

  24. hardass says:

what he is going to annonce is , and wants to make it official , ABSOLUTE POWER .

So much for democracie here ,Ok for abroad /

  25. wisedup says:

Panic in the WH, we all can feel it, gotta lie somemore for thoes 2006 elections. SPYGATE is knocking on the door. Honest critics…ok IMPEACH YOURSELF..

  26. Andy in DE says:

#24 – that makes for a great George Clooney film, but it’s clearly not reality. The sheer fact that you guys are here trashing W 24/7 and providing aid and comfort to the enemy disproves your claim. Somehow if Bush were the absolute fascist you all claim he is, I don’t think he’d let this continue.

  27. cynicon implant says:

#17 — actually it looks more like Bush is finally providing the information the public needs to hear. He is on the offensive, not backpedaling.

  28. progressive and proud says:

I think the trolls who believe in this war should pay our share as well. Then maybe they would change thier tune.

  29. urban pirate says:

Maybe he is announcing his resignation!!!

But, it’s probably more of “Didn’t I do a great job invading a country under false pretenses, after scaring you so much that you let us get away with everything for 4 years. I mean we HAD AN ELECTION! Can’t we enjoy the moment? Didn’t I do a great job finding “victory” in my thirteenth version of why we went there in the first place?”

DON”T PAY ANY ATTENTION TO THE MAN BEHIND THAT CURTAIN!!!

  30. Ron says:

I thought the mission was accomplished way back in May of 2003, wasn’t it?

It’s almost 2006, and he’s still talking about winning the war.

Fact is, the US cannot win the war. It took some fifteen years to learn the lesson in Viet Nam. Eisenhower sent 900 military advisors there in 1959, about the time that the CIA hired Saddam as an assassin. Prior to that, the US sold surplus military equipment to France so they could fight down there in Viet Nam.

War doesn’t work. If George Bush had a lick of sense, he would sober up and bring home the troops.

  31. cynicon implant says:

#28 — OK, you’re on. But you have to pay my share of all the failed social programs and pork.

  32. Randy says:

Clinton NSA Eavesdropped on U.S. Calls

Bush Asserts U.S. Is Winning Iraq War

During the 1990’s under President Clinton, the National Security Agency monitored millions of private phone calls placed by U.S. citizens and citizens of other countries under a super secret program code-named Echelon.

On Friday, the New York Times suggested that the Bush administration has instituted “a major shift in American intelligence-gathering practices” when it “secretly authorized the National Security Agency to eavesdrop on Americans and others inside the United States to search for evidence of terrorist activity without [obtaining] court-approved warrants.”

But in fact, the NSA had been monitoring private domestic telephone conversations on a much larger scale throughout the 1990s – all of it done without a court order, let alone a catalyst like the 9/11 attacks.

In February 2000, for instance, CBS “60 Minutes” correspondent Steve Kroft introduced a report on the Clinton-era spy program by noting:

“If you made a phone call today or sent an e-mail to a friend, there’s a good chance what you said or wrote was captured and screened by the country’s largest intelligence agency. The top-secret Global Surveillance Network is called Echelon, and it’s run by the National Security Agency.”
NSA computers, said Kroft, “capture virtually every electronic conversation around the world.”

Echelon expert Mike Frost, who spent 20 years as a spy for the Canadian equivalent of the National Security Agency, told “60 Minutes” that the agency was monitoring “everything from data transfers to cell phones to portable phones to baby monitors to ATMs.”

Mr. Frost detailed activities at one unidentified NSA installation, telling “60 Minutes” that agency operators “can listen in to just about anything” – while Echelon computers screen phone calls for key words that might indicate a terrorist threat.

The “60 Minutes” report also spotlighted Echelon critic, then-Rep. Bob Barr, who complained that the project as it was being implemented under Clinton “engages in the interception of literally millions of communications involving United States citizens.”

One Echelon operator working in Britain told “60 Minutes” that the NSA had even monitored and tape recorded the conversations of the late Sen. Strom Thurmond.
Still, the Times repeatedly insisted on Friday that NSA surveillance under Bush had been unprecedented, at one point citing anonymously an alleged former national security official who claimed: “This is really a sea change. It’s almost a mainstay of this country that the NSA only does foreign searches.”

I ask, where was the NY Times when all of this was going on? This proves that most of the MSM and especially the NYT is in the backpocket of the democratic party.

  33. Giacomo says:

Junior’s Iraqi War has now cost $227,551,775,000? That’s $2,047 for each household so far in the entire United States.

I get your point … of course that’s only considering income tax revenue on individuals … but I get your point.

Let us all pray that the President just announces something about the CIA leaks, rather than a declaration of war (on Iran).

Given that the Mossad is one of the best intelligence agencies in the world, you have more to fear from Israel doing something aggressive … they’ve already inferred as much (and there’s precedent here … they flew into Iraq … bombed the crap out of their nuclear reactor … and flew back). If Iran is close (or has something), watch for that to happen. Historically, we have been able to convince Israel to stay out militarily (for fear of every Arab state losing their minds) but I don’t see how we could so in this case.

  34. Giacomo says:

War doesn’t work. If George Bush had a lick of sense, he would sober up and bring home the troops.

What does this mean? War doesn’t work in cases like this? War certainly does “work” in the sense that it can contain aggression (WWI, WWII) and force issues (Civil War) … war is horrible and should be avoided at all costs, but, unfortunately, it does “work”.

  35. Joe Sixpack says:

actually it looks more like Bush is finally providing the information the public needs to hear. He is on the offensive, not backpedaling.

    Comment by cynicon implant

Correct me if I’m wrong, but does that mean junior is calling that fat-assed Cheney a liar? I mean, I remember the Veep saying the insurgency was “on it’s last legs” or was I just imagining that in one of my hazy stupors down at the bar?

  36. Giacomo says:

What he is going to announce is , and wants to make it official , ABSOLUTE POWER.

He probably has a spring loaded lightsaber in his cloak …

  37. Giacomo says:

    Randy (#32)

    Can we get a link?

  38. Pete Bogs says:

I couldn’t believe Bush mentioned secret prisons where people are tortured… he made a lot of Freudian slips in this speech… not just about the secret prisons, but when he mentioned going to war without “enough” troops…

  39. Ron says:

Did war work for Germany? No. Did it work for Japan? No.

    War doesn’t work… for invaders.

Defense works, not wars of aggression.

  40. Randy says:

Bush just wiped the floor with the media this morning and investigations are in the future, not for Bush of course, but those leaking classified information in an effort to undermine the administration. I think they played nice just a little too long. The press will think twice in the future hopefully and realize how they are hurting our national security in their efforts to help the democratic party.

  41. Randy says:

Ron – what would you have done, if war is not the answer? Its easy for you to sit back and critize, but when does anyone from your side ever provide any idea on how to deal with terrorism?

  42. Keith H. says:

George Bush is going straight to hell, he won’t pass go, and he won’t be having conversations with God on the way.

  43. Husbandmen (HAHA!) HaH!vard, and STALE FOOs says:

Nevertheless, the final 9/11 commission report, released on
July 22, 2004, concluded that “American intelligence
agencies were unaware of Mr. Atta until the day of the
attacks.” This now looks to be embarrassingly wrong.

    Comment by Randy — December 19, 2005 @

Like the lazy attitude of the Bush administration after being informed that Al Quaida was our biggest threat by the Clinton administration? Your side has consistently been wrong since this started, and you question us about our “ideas’? After 2000 dead soldiers, we can safely say your ideas suck bilgewater, mate.

  48. Godfry Daniel says:

#41 Randy asks how to deal with terrorism:
Step 2: Take the billions of dollars spent killing Iraqis and put it into developing fuel technolgies to get America off the oil tit. Create jobs doing it. Put every effort of America into it. Stop dealing with arab countries, the shieks don’t need any more money.

  49. Godfry Daniel says:

#41 Randy asks how to deal with terrorism:
Step 3: remove the politicians who will do everything in their power to prevent this from happening.

  50. Keith H. says:

    Bush to hold press conference

    Wake me when it’s over.

  51. Ryan Neat says:

Randy, it’s interesting you would talk about criticizing the president and Kosovo. Republicans are crap at executing war, Democrats are good at it. You should ask clinton how to execute the war, considering he clearly was good at it, and republicans stink.

“You can support the troops but not the president”

    -Representative Tom Delay (R-TX)

“My job as majority leader is be supportive of our troops, try to have input as decisions are made and to look at those decisions after they’re made … not to march in lock step with everything the president decides to do.”

    -Senator Trent Lott (R-MS)

For us to call this a victory and to commend the President of the United States as the Commander in Chief showing great leadership in Operation Allied Force is a farce”

    -Representative Tom Delay (R-TX)

  52. Godfry Daniel says:

I wish you people would quit arguing about how to wage war. There is no reason to wage war. Read #48. There’s only one way out and it ain’t killing.

  53. the Fly-man says:

Randy How can the private sector, for this instance, the MSM hurt our national Security by helping the Democratic Party? Isn’t there Fox, Msnbc and certainly enough conservative vehicles and think tanks to counter what the MSM has offered. The administration reads from a book that they will only show anyone after it has been rewritten for their tenditious followers and call it history. How can asking someone to prove they have the authority to do something be treason?

  54. the Fly-man says:

Randy also as Giacomo asked earlier your post #32 No-Link dude. We love to follow the trail.
