Frist Infects Defense Bill

By Amanda Terkel on Dec 20th, 2005 at 6:04 pm

Frist Infects Defense Bill

On Sunday night, Frist and Hastert inserted an stealth provision into the 2006 Defense Appropriations spending report “that protects vaccine manufacturers from product liability claims in the event of a viral pandemic, such as one caused by avian flu.” But not only is this provision unrelated to defense appropriations spending, it was inserted after conferees had signed off on the report and will benefit foreign-owned corporations:

Observers familiar with the procedural history of conference reports said that they were unaware of any precedent for inserting language after conferees had signed off on the report. … If the law is applied as Frist and other supporters intend, it will represent enormous financial relief for a small group of largely foreign-owned pharmaceutical companies that have worked to promote vaccine liability protection.

Sanofi Pasteur, one of the corporations set to gain from Frist’s provision, has given $5,000 to the senator’s PAC.

Just like the very similar story, which I’m sure you remember, from last year where the secret rider was found in the Homeland Security Bill. It would have specifically protected Eli Lilly from lwasuits over vaccine ingredients—they were at the time being threatened by such a lawsuit. Nobody would even cop to putting the rider in there until finally a retiring Senator said he did it.

You’d think with his being under investigation ALREADY, he have a bit more brains than to pull such a sleaze act.

Ah, these rider stories remind me of the good ole days before, torture, secret prisons, illegal spying on citizens, fascism, illegal wars, treason, and gross incompetence in response of natural dissaters.

What are the chances of having only to be outraged by cronie-rider legistlation once again?

  20. Burton Burland Jr. says:

This is just standard operating procedure for the corrupt congress we are now stuck with. If everyone would pull their head out of their asses and vote these bastards out office, and take back America, maybe in a couple of hundred years, we could enjoy prosperity again.

  21. Marie says:

What the hell is going on? Do they think that because they are going to be taken down soon they should try to help themselves to as much as they can before it happens?
Isn’t Frist in enough trouble already? Only he knows how much trouble he is in at this juncture, so perhaps he is feathering his nest for the future. Hastert — well the guy is a fat-boy sleazey pol.
Every week there is something new, some power that they abuse, some procedure that they ignore — this cannot be allowed to continue.

This rang a bell; I believe what Frist is actually doing is selling out autistic kids and their parents for a bag of shells to the GOP. This was just his end of the bargain:

    http://www.truthout.org/cgi-bin/artman/exec/view.cgi/33/11926

He’s personally taken in more than a million dollars from the pharmaceutical companies to limit the size of, or exempt them from, more than 4,000 lawsuits filed by parents of autistic children who are suing on the grounds that thimerosol (a preservative used in vaccines that contains mercury) caused their childrens’ autism. There is substantial evidence that they’re correct. Avian Bird Flu? A red herring; Frist knows where the big money is and, like any good Republican, will sell out the American public for pennies on the dollar.

Back on track, I do not believe in vaccines either. I rarely get the common cold either.

But I do think it is odd that they want to slip this provision in very quitely. It screams that the vaccines themselves are quite dangerous and they expect to be sued over their use.

If you know something might be wrong for the people, why do they go ahead and do it anyway? one word: MONEY.

  29. SKdeA says:

A lot of people say they don’t “believe” in vacines – but most of us grew up with them, so we don’t know what we are missing in suffering and heartbreak. Before the polio and TB vaccines, my mother remembers losing two or three classmates each year to those diseases.
Would you want to gamble with your life, or your childs’?
But this thimerosol sounds like bad news. Hopefully there will at least be a way to prove if it the problem in autism, so that parents can make an intelligent decision to vaccinate or not. And maybe a non-thimerosol version would be released in that case.
By the way, I won’t be on line much for a week, so happy holidays to all my fellow commentors! It is a great pleasure to read your input and be part of this online discussion. It has helped me immeasurably to understand so much that I couldn’t find info on before.

Let us not forget the shares owned by none other than Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld, in the company that just happens to be the only one that can produce the vaccine they feel will protect against the Avian Flu virus. Gawd these people (and I use the term loosely)are just foul. Sick and wrong.

  32. Marie says:

    SKdeA wrote, and I agree.

Recently I have read a lot about Thimerosol and it is not good. (Years ago, contact lens solutions were preserved with the stuff and it created a lot of eye troubles.) The evidence against Thimerosol in regards to autism is strong and certainly deserves intensive investigation. I am sure that the pharmaceutical companies are very well aware of the potential damage from the preservative (many childhood vaccines are already being non-mercury preserved)and it seems quite credible to me that TruthOut has the facts on the reason for this despicable behavior by Frist.

  33. WORFEUS says:

How’d you like to see that coming at you with a bone saw in it’s hand?

  34. Susan says:

4,000 lawsuits filed by parents of autistic children who are suing on the grounds that thimerosol

I heard a report just the other day that the amount of children with autism is at epedemic proportions.

    Now we know why.

SkydeA, I do agree with you but my nieces and nephews have had serious reactions to todays vacinations. My sister refused to vacinate her youngest and the school refused to allow him in school. She got a doctors note saying that because of family history, he recommends the vaccine not be given. The kid got in school without the vaccine.

  35. wwallace says:

Susan, maybe you should take them to a different veterinarian.

  36. bchandler says:

FWIW, the vaccines containing thimerosol have been banned in this country for a couple years; guess where they went? Yes, the third world, where they’re believed to have caused an explosion of autism in China, which previously had almost never heard of it. Lots of interesting reading to follow up on this, but the proof is in the pudding: we’ll all watch and see if the rate of autism in this country drops dramatically in the next 3 years, now that the vaccines are out of use.
On another note, why on earth does Bill Frist want to be a politician? He certainly doesn’t need the money from his crooked doings, and he’s sure not about the public good in any way. Just power-tripping? I don’t think he’s clean enough to run for president any more…

  52. Rosencrantz says:

And then people wonder why there has been so many cases coming forward of drugs being approved for market that haven’t been properly tested for harmful side effects.

This is the ONLY possible reason for legislation like this. To protect pharmaceutical/vaccine companies that rush drugs/vaccines to market without properly testing how dangerous they may actually be. Allowing these companies to quickly cash in on an outbreak and not worry about potential “legal side effects” of their unethical actions.

  53. kindness says:

I know this is a little late posting on yesterdays thread, but on the issue of vaccines:

they do still use either separately or both mercury compounds or formaldehyde as bacteriacides in injectable vaccines.

In Japan, they don’t start innoculating children until they are about 2-1/2 years old. The reasoning being that both mercury and formaldehyde are processed by the liver (mercury less so) in order to protect the body. A newborn’s liver is so small, and not fully functional that there are those who feel it can’t cope fully with the compunds, and goes on to damage other tissues as well. The number of innoculations definitely has something to do with this. None the less, because Japan starts their innoculations when the childs liver is more fully formed and functional, their incidence of kids with developmental issues (primarily including but not limited to autism)is almost half that of kids in the US.

So I guess my point is that you should be considerate of WHICH vaccines you give your child, how those vaccines are given and when they are given in your kids life.

  54. kindness says:

PS – I am a fan of the oral polio vaccine. but they don’t have to have it when they are newborns.

  55. Giacomo says:

In Japan, they don’t start innoculating children until they are about 2-1/2 years old.

I thought they switched back to 3 months or so … and saw an increase in autism.

My wife and I have decided to delay innoculations until our children are at least 2 (we’ll re-evaluate then). Given that for many of the diseases that the vaccinations are trying to prevent, the vaccine has a much greater chance of harming the infant/child than an un-vaccinated child has of being injured by the actual disease … this seems like a no brainer (but trying to explain that to my mother was next to impossible).

People don’t understand that while the vaccines may innoculate (which is to cause anti-bodies of the disease to be present) they don’t immunize (which is to render immune from the disease). BIG difference. No one (not even the CDC) has proven that the presence of anti-bodies for a disease means that the individual can no longer get the disease, but like 99% of the US population believes this.

One small example … the chicken pox vaccine is something around 50% effective and increases the chances of the individual getting shingles (way worse) later in life … not to worry though, a shingles vaccine is on the way (wonder what that one will cause).

  56. Mr. Evil says:

Hmmmm…. let’s see. They get to sell us whatever they want to call a vaccine. Put it in a vial or bottle and price it at… say, $500 each and make a huge profit (one of the reasons republicans live for). Nobody gets well and most others remain sick or die. And the company is protected above the welfare of the American people. And Bill Frist calls himself a doctor. The only doctor he compares to is Josef Mengele (the infamous Dr. Death of Nazi Germany notoriety).

    What a lowlife scumbag.
