“This has been the saddest day of my life,” said Alaska Sen. Ted Stevens (R), 82, “as he watched victory slip away again in his 25-year crusade for drilling in the refuge.”
Poor baby. Go home and have a glass of egg nog, and a warm bath. Didn't your parents tell you that you can't stomp your feet and get whatever you want? Didn't you tell your own kids that? Santa's watching.
Here is hoping that Stevens has many more days just like today. Lest we forget this is the same guy who stole taxpayer money to build a bridge to nowhere in his district. He deserves whatever he gets.
And all night long, through the halls of Congress it was heard, "But I want Alaskan Oil! Not that fancy Iraqi stuff. Waaaaaaaa! Waaaa! Waaaaaaaaaaa!"
And so little Teddy Stevens didn't get the one thing he wanted for Christmas more than anything: a raped and spoiled environment. Meanwhile, just down the street little Georgie opened his gifts and found a lump of coal... underneath every mountain in the country! He called some friends and they began to dig, and they didn't stop until every mountain was crushed, and they lived happily ever after.
"Saddest Day of my life" - oh what pathos. He's never had a father or mother die? Never lost a good friend or a brother or sister? Resign Senator Stevens.
And he promised to go to every state where he was voted against and blast the Senators for taking away money from Fatherland Security and Katrina rebuilding. I can't wait! Especially since he's admitted that they couldn't properly fund our security or rebuilding a destroyed city without first drilling in ANWR.
Don't worry about that, toys. They already made more disproportionate cuts from opposition districts than any ruling party in recent history. What else can little Stevie cut? The Highway to Everywhere?
He looked like he'll try to get even somehow. And he's no longer friends with any of the Dems. I bet they are bummed about that. Maybe he'll put tacks on the chairs or something?
Over at the red state blogs, they're saying: If only there were some way to keep these liberals from having representation... Yeah, that'd learn 'em...
If I was from Alaska, I'd be pretty embarrassed by Uncle Ted.
Has anyone else but me noticed how transparent most of the repubs are? I mean they are just too much! Giving away $70B in tax cuts to the wealthy and raising deficit and calling it good economics?
I guess the Dems have to be better just to survive, kind of Darwinian.
The miserable Mr Stevens will just go home, fly over and shoot a bunch more wolves. Everything for money and power. All these people know how to do is cut it, drill it or kill it....Let's not forget to remind all the press and voters about the tie killer Cheney voting to cut all necessary spending for the needy and other important needs...
82, eh? perhaps death is near. Not for the caribu nor the permafrost, but for the idea that we use this region for oil. sorry ted, your dream is gone. fu@k you and your strong-arm tactics. go quietly into the nite.
please correct me if I am wrong, but is he the ProTem leader of the Senate, and as such, third in line for the throne, sorry, Presidency? Doesn't the ProTem come before the speaker of the House?
Myth: An overwhelming majority of Alaskans support drilling in the Arctic Refuge.
Fact: Statewide public opinion polls show Alaskans to be closely divided on this issue. In a recent poll, 45% of Alaskans agreed that "the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge (ANWR) should be protected from oil drilling" while 49% disagreed and 6% were neutral or didn't know (Alaska Conservation Alliance, July 2000). In response to the statement "the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge should be protected from British Petroleum's oil drilling and development plans," 41% agreed, 43% disagreed and 16% were neutral; Alaska Conservation Alliance, November 1999).
Fact: Most Alaska residents polled in rural areas, Southeast Alaska, Fairbanks, Democrats, moderates, and women by a wide margin agree that the refuge should be protected from oil development (November 1999).
Fact: Alaskans pay no state sales tax or income tax. Every man, woman, and child in the state receives a check for about $2,000.00 each year for the state's oil revenue chalked $128 billion "permanent fund."
Perhaps Bush knew this day may come, and that's why he appointed such loyalists to Bush to such high positions in the government.. In case he is impeached, he has a long, long line of people he knows will continue his evil mission.
I will always remember Ted Stevens at the Senate lectern, shaking in anger, yelling "NO!" when they wanted to take the $250,000,000.00 earmarked for construction of a bridge to an island populated by only 50 people, already served by a ferry, and use that money to help thousands of people who had lost their homes and livelihoods to the flooding from Hurricane Katrina.
This man has no soul. He is not a Christian. He must be loved by somebody, and he must feel love of sorts for his family, but otherwise he is dead inside. I feel sorry for him. He's lost.
What a Whiny-Assed Titty Baby (stolen from Atrios). Is the refuge the ONLY place in Alaska where one could drill for oil? Why does Teddy hate against caribou, bear, salmon, arctic fox, bunnies, etc?
As best as I can tell, Sen. Stevens remains the most popular person in Alaska. Some call him "our best natural resource." He also has been a consistent vote for working families and unions in Alaska.
#32 Actually there is more oil on Alaska's North Slope, but it is harder to get and more expensive - therefore making less profit for the greedy oil companies as such unacceptable.

cynical #15,
All the more reason to keep an eye on those red state traitors. We may have to give closure to the civil war!
Stevens' message: The troops don't get more armor until I get my oil wells.

People of Alaska: HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!
Do I sense a Bill Frist kind of temper brewing. :)

For God's sake - I can't believe that we PAY for these pathetic bunch of losers. We pay for them to act in their own self-interest. Robert is right:
Resign Senator Stevens - you don't represent America.

December 22nd, 2005 at 2:40 amI would have thought the saddest day of his life might have been when his first wife, mother of his children, was killed in a plane crash.
Stevens on the floor of the Senate tonight was the height of gall. You really have to know his background to have fully appreciated it.
For those of you who don't know Stevens' history:
