Think Progress

UPDATE: Fox Carolina Reporter Active On White Supremacist Website»

Tami Birckner, the Fox Carolina reporter who ran the one-sided fluff piece on StormFront.org, a popular hub for white supremacists and anti-Semites, was an active participant in the website’s chat forums.

Think Progress contacted Birckner this afternoon and she confirmed that she is “FOXSC” on StormFront’s forums. Since joining in October, Birckner has posted five times, often gaining feedback (and praise) on her StormFront coverage:

FOXSC, 11/10/05:

I am FOX Carolina reporter who reported this story. I contacted dozens of Stormfront members, all of whom (with the exception of Bob Whitaker and Jamie Kelso) declined to talk with me for this story because of the believed slant I would put into this story. I hope this can show those of you who have little faith in the media that there are journalists who take pride in being factual and unbiased.

FOXSC, 11/10/05:

I am the reporter who did this story. For those of you who live in the FOX Carolina viewing area, I am willing to do a follow-up story to show a better make-up of the people who are members and talk more in-depth about your beliefs. THis would probably air in February. Let me know if you are interested.

Birckner’s praise of StormFront didn’t go unnoticed by Jamie Kelso (”Charles Lindbergh”), the site’s Senior Moderator, 11/14/05:

One detail that I forgot (until just yesterday) was to unmoderate our new Stormfront Member, FOXSC, so that Fox could post more easily on Stormfront.

Birckner told Think Progress that she is unsure whether or not she will be doing a follow-up piece and is waiting to hear more from the “local community.” When asked why she didn’t include some voices that were critical of StormFront, she replied she did the story exactly as she was told to and that officials at the network were very pleased with her coverage.

    “as she was told to”

    That says volumes, doesn’t it?

Hmmm… considering Mighty Afro referenced this article in the previous forum, claims to live in the South, and is a racist - could this be her real name?

  3. Optimist Says:

Ah, the Carolinas, a little slice of how things were in the good ol’ days - lynchings, cross burnings, race riots, being able to legally marry your sister’s daughter even if she was under age. Good times…

    Uhhhh… what? Is she serious?

  5. wwallace Says:

Amanda, a poster on ThinkProgress, posted a story about Stormfront, therefore Amanda is a white supremacist. Wow, guilt by association is easy, isn’t it, Amanda?

What is your point exactly anyway?

  6. turtle Says:

Good work in uncovering the actions of these unsavory characters.

  7. Spudge_Boy Says:

Of course the trolls simply don’t get it. But, could we expect anything to change?

  8. wwallace Says:

Of course Spudge can’t make a point and instead just calls names, but since he’s a liberal, could we expect anything to change?

  9. Patel Says:

Fox news sells hate. Hate the Liberals, hate the Blacks, hate the Browns, hate the Yellows, hate the non-Christians,
hate anybody who is not exactly like you and does not share you values.

Fox News is the KKK Channel.

  10. buzzbike Says:

Who’s surprised by this revelation? It seems to me that if Faux News hired a White Supremacist, it was because she is related to someone already working there. Nepotism always has been and always will be, a factor in hiring someone into the media. I’m kind of surprised she’s the only one!

  11. JIMBO Says:

    Spudge-

As wwallace proves, you’re right. He just doesn’t get it.
He approves of the garbage Fox produces.

  12. Optimist Says:

Oh goodness, there’s wwallace throwing his/her/it’s hat in the ring to defend the nazis…uh facists…no, this time it’s the white supremacists. Gotta defend that HATE wwallace because what on earth would we have without it?

  13. Amanda Says:

    #6 - wwallace,

We never claim that Tami Birckner is a white supremacist. We were simply trying to demonstrate Fox Carolina’s imbalanced coverage of the organization.

  14. Optimist Says:

    Buzzbike,

Word on the street is that her brother and her husband work there. Whats really weird is that he is her boss!

Think about it for a second…

  15. Ryan Neat Says:

Amanda, why would you care about a local news affiliate in North Carolina? You’re engaging in blatantlt dishonest guilt by association.

  18. wwallace Says:

Calling me names will never change any of the facts I’ve posted.

  19. Double A Says:

  20. wwallace Says:

    Her Bio from FOX……

Tami has been a member of the FOX Carolina news team since its inception in 1999. Tami is an award-winning journalist with more than two dozen notable accomplishments to her name, several for her work as an investigative reporter.

Tami began her broadcasting career in radio, working as a reporter, anchor, and eventually news director in Martinsburg, WV. After six years in radio news, Tami made the switch to television, where she produced, reported, and anchored at WHAG-TV in Hagerstown, MD.

Tami is an active member of the Upstate community. She has served on the board member for the Piedmont Wilderness Institute, a juvenile justice program for young male teenagers in South Carolina that serves as an alternative to jail time. Tami was also the 2004 Grand Ambassador for Red Ribbon Works, an ongoing campaign to keep todays youth away from tobacco, alcohol and drugs.

Tami received her undergraduate degree in Broadcast Communications fromShepherd College in Shepherdstown, WV. In July of 2005, Tami completed her Masters Degree with honors.

Tami grew up in southern Maryland, where her family still lives. She enjoys her free time outdoors, whether it’s at the beach, camping, or fishing at one of the Upstate’s nearby lakes. Her other interests include volleyball, knitting, and cooking.

  32. Ian Says:

I wonder how FOX Carolina, whose phone number is (864) 288-2100, would feel if people around the country started flooding them with angry phone calls?

I’m also curious how they would react to people e-mailing their reporters at the following e-mail addresses:

    diana.watson@foxcarolina.com
    michael.smith@foxcarolina.com
    tami.birckner@foxcarolina.com
    kevin.holden@foxcarolina.com
    jennifer.phillips@foxcarolina.com
    jillian.simmons@foxcarolina.com
    jamie.guirola@foxcarolina.com

Their General Sales Manager, Terry Conway (phone: (864) 213-2117, fax: (864) 297-0728, email: terry.conway@foxcarolina.com) might also be curious to hear people’s opinions about how their coverage of white supremacists could effect advertising revenues.

  33. YOD556 Says:

wwallace, See #14 - Think demonstrating Fox’s imbalanced, biased coverage of a white supremacist story is a point. Not sure what you’re trying to prove.

  34. wwallace Says:

Ian, angry about what? YOD, since Amanda bailed out, perhaps you can explain the relevance of a local Fox affiliate doing a story about white supremacists?

  35. Marie Says:

No one should be surprised by this. When one thinks of who Fox News supports, what Fox news reports, this simply fits nicely into their little box of acceptability.

  36. Optimist Says:

Goodness, I step away from my computer for 5 minutes and in that time wwallace is accussing me of being a republican and being Double A. In fact, wwallace is accusing everybody of something and still has not provided any facts or information pertaining to this thread.

I think Double A is right, wwallace is smokin some of the good stuff.

  37. ElectricBassPlayer Says:

Hey trollers, this is good, isn’t it?

That this Think Progress piece, for once, isn’t about Fox News hypocrisy?

I guess you just can’t please some people!

  38. wwallace Says:

Optimist has still offered nothing of relevance, period. Why is it that not one liberal, including Amanda who started this thread, cannot explain in any way the relevance of this post?

  39. Spudge_Boy Says:

wwallace can’t seem to figure out that “troll” is not name calling. It is an accepted term on these “Internets” for people that post garbage on a website. He doesn’t realize that as long as he posts garbage here, he will be a troll.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Internet_troll

“In Internet terminology, a troll is a person who posts inflammatory messages on the internet, such as on online discussion forums, to disrupt discussion or to upset its participants. “Troll” can also mean the inflammatory message itself posted by a troll or be a verb meaning to post such messages. “Trolling” (the gerund) is also commonly used to describe the activity.”

Sorry troll, but that is what you are. If you are not familiar with “Internets” lingo, it is not my fault.

  40. zed Says:

I find it horrible that they call this sick website an excercise of free speech, but they moderate the comments!!

  41. wwallace Says:

Spudge is posting garbage, therefore he is calling himself a troll. LOL

  42. wwallace Says:

Spudge, posting a question that you can’t answer is not “inflammatory.”

    LOL

  43. wwallace Says:

Incidentally, why is ThinkProgress against other hate sites on the Internet? Are they against competition?

  44. True Blue Says:

    Nice One, Ian!!

Let’s all email and call, shall we?

WhineyWally is particularly idiotic today. I laughed so loud about his “facts” that my kid came in to find out what was going on…

  45. True Blue Says:

    now he’ll insult me…

  46. Spudge_Boy Says:

Does wwallace think that I am addressing him, referring to him or give a crap what he thinks? I said trolls and he ASSumed I was talking about him. Interesting. He must be getting comfortable with being a troll. I-RIGHT-I even calls himself the “troll patrol” because he understands that is what he is doing.

    Silly troll.

  47. Double A Says:

Why does everyone keep bashing wwallace? He cares about Think Progress. Really! wwallace is concerned about the relevance of this thread, and so am I. I mean ElectricBassPlayer said it best, Fox News actually reported on something factual! We should be giving congrats to Fox News, because they have finally proven that they are “fair and balanced”. I mean, which other network would cover this story? Damn liberal media!

  48. True Blue Says:

    Whew! Thanks for the laugh!

  49. wwallace Says:

Double A, but you’re not telling the truth - this thread is not about Fox News. It has nothing to do with Fox News.

“In the interest of rapid distribution to the Staff of the War Crimes Prosecution in the field, the attached study is presented in unedited draft form. The document is still seriously lacking in evidence of probative value, ”

I’m not a lawyer, wwallace; perhaps you could explain what “seriously lacking in evidence of probative value, and is consequently ill-suited to serve as a basis for any international discussion” means.

  55. wwallace Says:

True Blue, I asked a question, you can’t answer it. No one here will answer it. That means I’m being “beat up”? ROFL

With the Catholic Church the Führer ordered a concordat to be concluded by Herr Von Papen. Shortly before that agreement was concluded by Herr Von Papen I visited the Pope myself. 107. Ryan Neat Says:

    Matt,

The genetic difference that makes white people ‘white’ is one ‘defective?’ gene difference. It’s a random mutation, and nothing more.

Besides, genetic ‘diversity’ is the key to species survival, and it’s the thing that generally makes a species or group genetically ’superior’. By that measure, africans are clearly superior. There’s more genetic diversity between someone from east and west africa, than there is between someone who’s from east africa, and whites, asians, polynesian and native americans combined.

In reality there is no difference between any 2 human beings to matter - period! Culture, and personal bigotry is all that truly separates us, not the myth of race!

I told him to shut the fvck up because we are tired of the idiotic drivel being put out on a daily basis. They degrade the value of ThinkProgress.

But, we get no response, just random post deletions, with no ryhme or reason. They don’t delete the original troll posts that cause us to respond, only the response posts.

This is much the same way that a football game works. One player pushes another player, who turns around and pushes back. The second player, who was the original pushee gets the penalty. Even though everybody at home sees the first push.

All of us see the original flame post, but for some reason Think Progress does not.

If this is the quality Think Progress is striving for, maybe this is not the blog for us.

  112. Judd Says:

    Gregor and Spudge,

We are doing our best to enforce the policy evenly. These threads contain dozens and dozens of comments so it’s hard for us to keep up. If there is a particular comment that you feel violates our term of use, send us and email (include which post we can find it).

  113. Double A Says:

And in the meantime, I’ll keep harassing wwallace. :P

  114. Gregor Samsa Says:

    Judd,

With all due respect -it does not take a PhD to know who are the people trying to derail the threads.

If you are going to erase an angry response to an offensive remark, then you should also delete the motive.

As it is, you are allowing the disruptive posts go unchallenged and the thread to be thrown off-subject.

  115. Andy Says:

Why don’t you change the blog to register the participants? I want to ignore the filth from IRI and wwallace. They contribute nothing to the debate and merely state all democrats are wrong, and all republicans are right no matter what the policy. Force us to register with an IGNORE button.

  116. Ryan Neat Says:

    Judd,

I agree with Gregor, frankly that’s a very weak and unacceptable response. If you can take the time to delete the reponses to the original, you can certainly take the time to delete the original posting as well.

If you don’t have the time, resources, or personnel to actually do this effectively, one wonders whether you should state this as your intent. Clearly you’re understaffed to manage the blog correctly based on what you’ve stated. I suggest you hire people with enough time, and experience to do this job - your current system is clearly ineffective.

  117. Judd Says:

    Gregor:

It’s not a matter of understanding, it’s a matter of time. If you see something that violates the terms of use just help us out and send us email.

All it takes is for your moderator to hit CTRL+F and then type wwallace or I-RIGHT-I and you will see the garbage they post. In this thread you need look no farther than post #6 and you will see wwallace attacking your own bloggers.

Amanda, a poster on ThinkProgress, posted a story about Stormfront, therefore Amanda is a white supremacist. Wow, guilt by association is easy, isn’t it, Amanda?

What is your point exactly anyway?

    Comment by wwallace — December 22, 2005 @ 4:47 pm

Amanda’s point is quite clear to everybody here.

    Also, you state:

It’s not a matter of understanding, it’s a matter of time.

So, you have more time to go through e-mails than to just look at the threads? That just doesn’t make sense. I understand you guys are busy, but it would only take one person monitoring the threads to clear it of off topic attacks. Here is an idea. Only monitor the latest threads. If something is say older than three days, who cares if it is taken off topic.

I really like Think Progress. I like having debates with conservatives like Giacomo, cynicon implant and even mighty aphrodite.

Here’s something that hasn’t been addressed. What about somebody that uses a screen name like “Hitler was a liberal” Posts from people like “Sen Boxer kills babies” are not and will not ever add anything to any thread.

  122. Spudge_Boy Says:

“Then you guys go and twist my words around to label me as a troll”

    wwallace,

You ARE a troll. If you don’t like that label, then stop posting on the Internet in an inflamatory way. Until you stop, you ARE a troll. That is an accepted term used on the Internet, not just here at TP.

I have already posted this same definition in this thread, but you must not have read it.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Internet_troll

“In Internet terminology, a troll is a person who posts inflammatory messages on the internet, such as on online discussion forums, to disrupt discussion or to upset its participants. “Troll” can also mean the inflammatory message itself posted by a troll or be a verb meaning to post such messages. “Trolling” (the gerund) is also commonly used to describe the activity.”

I am sorry if you don’t agree with the term, but it has been around for a very long time and will not go away, no matter how much you don’t like it.

  123. wwallace Says:

Pointing out the absurdity of Amanda’s post is not an “attack.”

Spudge says, “Amanda’s point is quite clear to everybody here.”

Then perhaps Spudge could offer some sort of concise explanation, since neither Amanda nor anyone else has been capable of offering one.

  124. wwallace Says:

    Spudge,

You ARE a troll. If you don’t like that label, then stop posting on the Internet in an inflamatory way. Until you stop, you ARE a troll. That is an accepted term used on the Internet, not just here at TP.

  125. Double A Says:

Since when have facts mattered to you wwallace? I could show you pictures of Bush sodomizing children, and you would defend it as a necessary evil in fighting the war on terror. Don’t talk to us as if you were “Fair and Balanced” so to speak.

Damn, and I thought he was going to go with “Decent Americans will Ignore him”. He sure showed me… :P

  128. Spudge_Boy Says:

Here wwallace, let’s see if you can understand a simple term if I put into a different light.

If I was posting at a Playstation web site and an Xbox fan got on and said “Playstation sucks and you’re all dumb.” The Xbox person on the Playstation site is a troll. Do you get it now?

I am a left winger on a left wing site. You are a right winger on a left wing site. You are a troll. I didn’t make up the term, just very familiar with the Internet. It has nothing to do with being racist or anything else.

    And:

The point of this thread is to show that the Fox reporter who did a piece on Fox News Carolina (from another thread) was clearly a participant on the StormFront web site. That is it, nothing more. Do you got that too?

  129. wwallace Says:

Spudge: “If I was posting at a Playstation web site and an Xbox fan got on and said “Playstation sucks and you’re all dumb.” The Xbox person on the Playstation site is a troll. Do you get it now?”

So you’re saying any conservative on this site is a troll, no matter what they post, and any liberal on this site is not a troll, no matter what they post. Being “inflammatory” has nothing to do with it; the definition you posted has nothing to do with it. So then why did you bother to post that definition? LOL

  130. Quisp Says:

Not ANY conservative, ALL conservatives, if they don’t have the courage of what they claim to believe.

  131. Spudge_Boy Says:

    wwallace,

    Sheesh man, do read?

If an Xbox person goes to a Playstation site and says:

“Playstation sucks and you’re all dumb.”

That is inflamatory, making that person a troll.

    If the Xbox person says:

“I like the Xbox because it has more horsepower than the Playstation 2.”

That is not inflamatory and opens up debate.

As I have already stated in this thread and I am sure you didn’t read it, there are conservatives here at TP that are not trolls. I specifically stated Giacomo, cynicon implant and sometimes mighty aphrodite.

You need to read before posting. I think that is half of your problem.

  132. Double A Says:

Basically, he posted it because he is irritated with you. I really don’t blame him, as most people are getting tired of your antics. But hey, you don’t care, do you? No, I didn’t think so. So, go ahead, keep acting like a child, I find it very amusing.

  133. wwallace Says:

Spudge, clarification noted. Now, is it possible or impossible for a liberal to be a troll on a liberal site, under any circumstances?

  134. Spudge_Boy Says:

  144. SpudgeBoy Says:

    wwallace,

I would take it that David is Bill O’Rielly is implying that he thinks that the Jews are perpetrating the Global War on Christmas. Who else has enough money to own the companies that sell “Holiday” items or have “Holiday” sales, rather than “Christmas.”

The reason why somebody could jump to that conclusion is because there are three main religions in the world. Christians, Jews and Muslims. The Christians wouldn’t perpetrate a Global War on Christmas. So, that rules them out. The Muslims are not known for owning anything but oil companies. So, that leaves the Jews.

Hence, the Global War on Christmas is being perpetrated by Jews. So, when Bill O’Rielly says there is a Global war on Christmas, he is implying that it is being done by Jews, making Bill O’Rielly anti-semetic.

  145. SpudgeBoy Says:

    That should be:

Republicans are such holocaust apologist, clearly they have more in common with the president of Iran, than americans.

  152. Ryan Neat Says:

Lets see what hitler himself said about his religion:

My feelings as a Christian points me to my Lord and Savior as a fighter. It points me to the man who once in loneliness, surrounded only by a few followers, recognized these Jews for what they were and summoned men to fight against them and who, God’s truth! was greatest not as a sufferer but as a fighter. In boundless love as a Christian and as a man I read through the passage which tells us how the Lord at last rose in His might and seized the scourge to drive out of the Temple the brood of vipers and adders. How terrific was His fight for the world against the Jewish poison. To-day, after two thousand years, with deepest emotion I recognize more profoundly than ever before in the fact that it was for this that He had to shed His blood upon the Cross. As a Christian I have no duty to allow myself to be cheated, but I have the duty to be a fighter for truth and justice…. And if there is anything which could demonstrate that we are acting rightly it is the distress that daily grows. For as a Christian I have also a duty to my own people…. When I go out in the morning and see these men standing in their queues and look into their pinched faces, then I believe I would be no Christian, but a very devil if I felt no pity for them, if I did not, as did our Lord two thousand years ago, turn against those by whom to-day this poor people is plundered and exploited.
-Adolf Hitler, in his speech on 12 April 1922

  153. Ryan Neat Says:

wwallace lies and said hitler didn’t use ‘christianity’ to justify his policies, hitler’s own words say wwallace is as big of a liar as rove is.

It would have been more to the point, more honest and more Christian, in past decades not to support those who intentionally destroyed healthy life than to rebel against those who have no other wish than to avoid disease. Moreover, a policy of laissez faire in this sphere is not only cruelty to the individual guiltless victims but also to the nation as a whole…. If the Churches were to declare themselves ready to take over the treatment and care of those suffering from hereditary diseases, we should be quite ready to refrain from sterilizing them.
-Adolf Hitler, in his speech on 30 Jan. 1934

The Catholic Church considered the Jews pestilent for fifteen hundred years, put them in ghettos, etc, because it recognized the Jews for what they were”…. I recognize the representatives of this race as pestilent for the state and for the church and perhaps I am thereby doing Christianity a great service by pushing them out of schools and public functions.
-Adolf Hitler, 26 April 1933, [cited from Richard Steigmann-Gall’s The Holy Reich]

The Government, being resolved to undertake the political and moral purification of our public life, are creating and securing the conditions necessary for a really profound revival of religious life…. The National Government regard the two Christian Confessions as the weightiest factors for the maintenance of our nationality. They will respect the agreements concluded between them and the federal States. Their rights are not to be infringed…. It will be the Government’s care to maintain honest co-operation between Church and State; the struggle against materialistic views and for a real national community is just as much in the interest of the German nation as in that of the welfare of our Christian faith. The Government of the Reich, who regard Christianity as the unshakable foundation of the morals and moral code of the nation, attach the greatest value to friendly relations with the Holy See and are endeavouring to develop them.
-Adolf Hitler, in his speech to the Reichstag on 23 March 1933

  154. Ryan Neat Says:

I read the nuremburg files. They’re an interesting read, and frankly the stories, policies and attitudes sound exactly like the current Republicans. I’m sure Hannity didn’t mean to point people to such a clear and indicting document - he must have been swayed by the misleading title. While the title was clearly an attempt to put a good face on christians in europe, it actually has the opposite effect if you read the contents.

It is a remarkable document, but not because of what republicans believe it says.

In particular the document describes how evangelicals (remember this includes Bush) were completely in line with Nazi policies, and that the actions of the evangelicals and Nazis were as one.

    Sound familiar? It should.

  155. Anchorage Activist Says:

  157. Ryan Neat Says:

    AA,

I guess you missed the part where Birckner posted a 1-sided puff piece for the white supremacist. The only reason that would happen is if the reporter or the company are white supremacists. Considering it’s fox, the easy answer is that it’s both.

  159. Cranky Media Guy Says:

It’s important to note here that there is no such thing as a “Fox News Channel” affiliate. What we’re talking about here is a local station that carries Fox programming.

This in no way changes or excuses what they’ve done but it does mean that you shouldn’t call FNC to complain about it. This is a station NOT owned by Fox. Call the station to complain about this story.

It’s a heavily Christian area, and unless these advertisers belong to an Aryan Church (and yes, sadly there are some of those around here), this is NOT the behaviour a “good Christian” would support.

Wwally! Can you come up with a single original thought? Or can you at least keep your talking points current? LOL

  163. Mark Jeffries Says:

Once again, folks, let’s make it clear–WHNS or “Fox Carolina” is NOT owned by Fox–it is just an affiliate. Meredith Corporation owns the station. The only connection the station has with News Corp. is its Fox affiliation and that it probably takes the Fox News Edge feed. Roger Ailes had NOTHING–repeat, NOTHING to do with this story.

FNC has a lot of legitimate failings–let’s not blame them for something they didn’t do.

White Nationalism (the preservation of the “white” race) is supposedly their “aim”. Self preservation is a strong human instinct, therefore it stands to reason that whites should want to preserve certain aspects of their culture and heritage.

The problem with these “stormfront” Al Crackers is that they represent the most evil part of the white race. The part that believes that the only way the white race (and white purity) can be preserved is through ethnic cleansing, genocide, homo/homicide, and the subjugation of “inferior” races and persons. They are Hitlerian disciples who do not believe in freedom, democracy, and equality.

Even the name of their website is ominous and transparent- STORMFRONT.ORG.

I hope they realize that they are in fact a “global” minority, and that fomenting a race war in America will more than likely result in the realization of their paranoid fears. They should realize that they aren’t the only ones prepared to defend themselves, or take the offensive if the need arises.
