Another bullshit defense of Bush’s spying activity and an attack on concerned citizens

(Note: The authors of this NYT editorial are David B. Rivkin and Lee A. Casey . . . lawyers who served in the Justice Department in the Reagan and George H. W. Bush administrations.)

[T]he only thing outrageous about this policy is the outrage itself.

    [...]

The president has the constitutional authority to acquire FOREIGN INTELLIGENCE [caps and italics added] without a warrant or any other type of judicial blessing.

    [...]

The attempt, by Democrats and Republicans alike, to dismantle the president’s core constitutional power in wartime is wrongheaded and should be vigorously resisted by the administration.

ah, but if it was ONLY foreign intelligence and if bush had ONLY used the perfectly adequate mechanisms that are already in place… but, NO-O-O-OO… instead, bushco is vacuuming up everything in sight – domestic and foreign, suspected al qaeda terrorists and your aunt millie in international falls… then they have the nerve to not only dismiss the legitimate concerns of u.s. citizens but also to impugn our intelligence as well…

The contretemps its revelation has caused reveals much more about the chattering classes’ fundamental antipathy to strong government in general, and strong executive power in particular, than it does about presidential overreaching.

The Constitution’s framers did not vest absolute power in any branch of the federal government, including the courts, but they did create a strong executive and equipped the office with sufficient authority to act energetically to defend the national interest in wartime. That is what President Bush has done, and nothing more.

that’s right… relegate me and anyone else who is watching civil liberties in the united states being washed away to the dustbin, all in the name of an endless war that serves only one purpose – allowing the bush administration to continue to accrue unlimited and unopposed power… this editorial is an insult to democracy, the constitution of the united states and to the intelligence of every concerned u.s. citizen… i’m digusted and outraged…

And, yes, I DO take it personally

GOP Investigated Pres. Clinton’s Cat But Only Plans ‘Oversight’ on Pres. Bush’s Admitted Illegal Spying

What do you call a political party that thinks postage for a Presidential cat’s fan club requires a full-on Congressional investigation, but a President who admits on national television to breaking Federal law, repeatedly, only merits some committee “oversight,” and spotty oversight at that?

    Republicans

    Compare and contrast:

1995: Rep. Dan Burton (R-IN), then chair of the House Government Reform and Oversight Committee, investigated whether taxpayers were footing the cost of stationery and postage for the fan club dedicated to President Clinton’s cat, Socks. (They were not – and it turns out Barbara Bush’s dog Millie had a fan club too.)

2005: Two weeks ago, President Bush admitted he willfully flouted a law that requires him to get warrants before wiretapping U.S. citizens. His justification for ignoring the law appears to be nobless oblige. In reaction, Republicans in charge of the Senate Judiciary Committee announced on Friday that they are planning “oversight” hearings into the matter.

AMMAN, Jordan — Two lawyers for Saddam Hussein said Monday that the former Iraqi president’s half brother claims U.S. officials offered him a ranking government position in Iraq if he testified against Saddam but he rejected a deal.

Barazan Ibrahim purportedly made the claim Thursday during a closed-door hearing by the Higher Iraqi Tribunal, which is hearing war crimes charges against Saddam, Ibrahim and six other former officials.

So, go to War, kill Thousands, Remove Saddam, then Reinstall hIs Half Brother, likely a Baathist, then Call IRAQ a Soverign and Democratic State.

Would YOU MEMBERS of Congress PLEASE do your JOBS and remove this Idiocy from Office, INCLUDING all of their PARTISAN Think tanks, Corporate Whores and Lobbyists, and Restructionist Straussian Amoral Fascists?

Actually, this is what Colin Powell said about Bush’s illegal wiretapping:

“My own judgment is that — it didn’t seem to me, anyway, that it would have been that hard to go and get the warrants [through FISA]. And even in the case of an emergency, you go and do it [begin surveillance]. The law provides for that. And three days later, you let the court know what you have done, and deal with it that way.”

From an interview with George Stephanopoulos featured on ABC’s “Nightline.”

KIEV, Ukraine – The last Ukrainian and Bulgarian troops have left Iraq, and Poland plans deep cuts in its deployment next year, the countries said Tuesday, the latest of several U.S. allies to draw down force levels as public demand weighs on government leaders.

Polish officials said Tuesday that Poland would remain in Iraq but reduce troop levels in March, from nearly 1,500 to 900. The Polish government’s decision must be approved by President Lech Kaczynski.

On Feb. 1, 2005, Ohio Supreme Court Justice Alice Robie Resnick (aka, “Queen Alice”) was arrested for driving under the influence (DUI) while traveling on I-75 from her home in Ottawa Hills (Toledo), Ohio to the Supreme Court in Columbus.

Alice was arrested at about 2:00 pm, which means she left her home while inebriated at about 1:00 oÂ’clock. Obviously, Alice was swilling liquor well before noon because when she took a field breathalyzer test it registered 2.06, which means she was stewed to the gills.

Ohio Judge Reprimanded for Drunk Driving
    By CARRIE SPENCER GHOSE
    Associated Press Writer
    December 28, 2005, 10:20 AM EST

COLUMBUS, Ohio — A panel of state appellate judges publicly reprimanded Ohio Supreme Court Justice Alice Robie Resnick on Wednesday, saying her drunken driving conviction violated the state’s judicial code of conduct.
    No other discipline was recommended.
Other judges have had their law licenses suspended following such a conviction, but the panel said those cases had aggravating circumstances, while Resnick has had no discipline against her since she was sworn in as an attorney in 1964.
Resnick, 66, acknowledged the allegations when an attorney discipline complaint was filed against her in November. The complaint said she violated the part of the code that says, “A judge shall respect and comply with the law and shall act at all times in a manner that promotes public confidence in the integrity and impartiality of the judiciary.”
Resnick was pulled over on Jan. 31 and at first drove away from state troopers who were questioning her. They followed her and later pulled her over again.
In a video shot by a patrol car camera, Resnick tells a police sergeant questioning her that “I did have something to drink.” She repeatedly asks to be let go and mentions her rulings as a judge, saying, “My God, you know I decide all these cases in your favor. And my golly, look what you’re doing to me.”
She pleaded guilty to drunken driving in February and her driver’s license was suspended for six months. She said then that she had suffered a relapse of a drinking problem.

Amazing this Lady was Drunk, WAY DRUNK, and got off with a Reprimand, while many people lose their jobs, pay thousands for Attornies, have license suspended, probation get whole lot worse? This is what WE call Justice?
    You Mean If I say these Words;
‘and my Golly, look what you are doing to me.”
Never mind that I endangered other drivers or the Police when speeding off, which gets many quite physically arrested or thrown to the pavement, and this person, a person like you or me,in every way shape or form, gets off with a little ol reprimand. wtf is wrong with this picture.

taking bets she will drink and drive again

Prepare to see Robbie Williams kitted out in a sailing suit and captain’s hat – he’s bought himself a yacht.

And the ultimate showman obviously wouldn’t be happy with anything less than the ultimate boat.

According to The Sun, he’s spent a whopping £8million on the luxury boys’ toy – a top of the range 115ft Athena cruiser from Italy’s leading boat company, Riva.

It’s the biggest and the most expensive bit of kit they’ve got and he’s named it ‘My RW’.

They’re his initials, in case you hadn’t worked it out.

A source said: “Robbie is keen to escape the limelight when he can. He felt the boat was the perfect way to disappear without being recognised.

Er, we may be simple land-lubbers, but wouldn’t the initials on the side of the boat be a

bit of a giveaway? And besides, we’ve got dinghies.

The source added: “He is going to keep it in the Med so he can enjoy sun-soaked holidays a short hop from his flat in London.”

Robbie is unlikely to be lonely on the open waves though. His boat is so big, it sleeps 24 people and that’s not even counting the eight crew.
