Conservatives are off to a bad start on their pledge to “improve transparency and accountability” in the House and Senate.
Not only has Frist tapped Sen. Rick Santorum (R-PA) — a key player in the K Street Project — to craft a conservative version of lobbying reform, the House has tasked one of its most corrupt members instruct new lawmakers on ethics:
Before they take their seats in the House of Representatives, newly elected lawmakers come to Washington for a weeklong orientation that includes a briefing on congressional ethics.
Presiding over their instruction is the chairman of the House Administration Committee, who since 2001 has been Rep. Bob Ney, R-Ohio.
Ney has been named as Representative #1 in the plea agreeements of both Abramoff and his partner, Michael Scanlon, detailing lavish gifts, travel, and contributions from the lobbyists in return for Ney’s cooperation in Congress. You can find more details of Ney’s extensive ties to Abramoff here.

January 7th, 2006 at 1:12 pmWhat we in Ohio know about Bob Ney:
Ney on DeLay: “I’m a good friend of his.” In 2001, Ney was reported as being, “an active lieutenant in good standing on the whip team of House Majority Whip Tom DeLay.” Ney, one of DeLay’s deputy whips, was also quoted saying of DeLay, “I’m a good friend of his.” [National Journal (no link available), 6/9/01]
Robert Ney has taken $4,750 from disgraced Republican super-lobbyist Jack Abramoff, who pled guilty to fraud, tax evasion, and conspiracy charges in connection to a federal bribery investigation. With Ney spending more time worrying about the testimony of indicted lobbyists than the things that matter most to the people of Ohio, are they getting the kind of representation they deserve?
Robert Ney has taken $24,492 from Tom DeLay’s ARMPAC. No surprise that Ney voted with Tom DeLay 95% of the time between Jan. 1 2004 and March 31 2005.
Is this the kind of government-for-hire that working families deserve?
Robert Ney voted to weaken the ethics rules in a move that many say served only to protect Tom DeLay. Does the integrity of the House mean so little that Robert Ney would sacrifice it to defend Tom DeLay?
When Republicans realized it was “impossible to win the communications battle” over the gutted ethics rules, Ney flip-flopped and voted to put the old rules back into place. So Robert Ney cares about the integrity of the House after all — when cable news is covering it.
When Democrats offered a solution to clean up the House by strengthening ethics rules, Robert Ney voted twice to make sure it never even came to an up or down vote. So instead of a bipartisan effort to get government working for Americans, Robert Ney stood for cronyism and partisan politics.
January 7th, 2006 at 1:13 pmThere are NO ethics in this Republican controlled Congress! They are into graft, greed and corruption! Jack Abramoff was their sleazy lobbyist cash cow, who stole money from Indian Tribes and used the funds to enrich himself and GOP!
January 7th, 2006 at 1:27 pmWhen referring to this national criminal enterprise, shouldn’t we use the Party’s proper name? It’s the Republican Syndicate.
January 7th, 2006 at 1:35 pmWTF!
Are you kidding me?
I am starting to think that all of the leading republicans are really double agent Democrats trying to take down the republican party from the inside.
I mean really there is know way these people can be sane.
January 7th, 2006 at 2:04 pmNey is also one of the main sponsors of HAVA, the ‘Force Diebold Down the State’s Throats Act,’ which ‘improves’ our Bushbacker-broken ‘voting’ system by making it worse.
Diebold may have fired Wally, but the parent company MUST be punished for its Vote-fraud section — and along with ES&S and the others, must be driven from our shores in tar, feathers, and orange suits.
Down with Diebold. Down with Ney.
Connect Noe with Abramov. Remove all government officials who allowed this vote-fraud system to be established.
January 7th, 2006 at 2:15 pmmakes sense to me.
January 7th, 2006 at 4:14 pmIn the up is down world of the GOP
Ney is the perfect choice to teach
ethics.
Could have been worse. Could have been Rove!
January 7th, 2006 at 6:50 pmI’m curious to know how one is instructed on ethics. Will the “lesson” be public? I picture a sort of AA-type meeting.
January 7th, 2006 at 7:15 pmDavid K. #5 has a great post. Nicely researched.
Correct me if I’m wrong, but you forgot to mention that Ney was also one of Abramoff’s golfing buddies who went to Scotland in 2002. Upon return he even solicited the Tigua Tribe to pay for part of it. Abramoff reminded the tribe that Ney would “show his appreciation in other ways.”
Ney was also one of the first to set up a legal defense fund for old pal Jack Abramoff.
I mean, I’m just so ashamed that the Grand Old Party is turning into a grand old party.
January 7th, 2006 at 7:23 pmThis post is misleading. Please update so that we can nip this blog rumor in the bud.
Granted, Republican “ethics” in Congress is a joke.
But by putting the Houston Chronicle story in the context of the Santorum reform and the pledge to improve “transparency and accountability,” you imply that Ney is part of the supposed ethics reform.
That’s not the case. The Chronicle article you cite refers to a longstanding ethics course given to incoming lawmakers. It’s not a new course. And it appears to have been last given a year ago.
I highly doubt that Republicans will be putting Ney in charge of the new “transparency and accountability” movement. They’re crooked, but they’re not stupid, and they know how bad it will look when he gets indicted.
But it also looks bad when liberal bloggers misread facts.
This is a rumo stemming from a misleading post at TPM Cafe and picked up later by War and Piece without comment.
Please, let’s stop it here.
January 7th, 2006 at 7:48 pmBut I think the point TP is trying to make, which is pretty significant, is that the Republicans in Congress aren’t doing anything to FIX the ethics problem either. This course may be longstanding, but they haven’t kicked him out of his ethics instructor position either.
January 7th, 2006 at 9:17 pmGreg55,
Absolutely. It’s an important point, and it should be clearly stated.
Unfortunately, the left blogosphere is picking up the meme that Hastert has proposed an an ethics reform course led by Ney, which is not true.

Fellow Republican: Ney likely to be indicted
January 7th, 2006 at 9:38 pmGannett News Service
WASHINGTON — Rep. Bob Ney, R-Ohio, is likely to be indicted in an ongoing public corruption scandal, according to a fellow Republican congressman, Jim McCrery of Louisiana

Of course, this is after the 300,000 he pocketed. Smart guy. I Wonder if he hit every branch when he fell out of that tree.

Most Senate Dems Took Abramoff Cash
Nearly ninety percent of Senate Democrats took money linked to disgraced “Republican” lobbyist Jack Abramoff, according to a list compiled by the Republican National Committee.

January 9th, 2006 at 1:37 pm#5 - “Ney on DeLay: “I’m a good friend of his.â€- Ohio David
My Dear David - if skunks from either party had their votes influenced (i.e. “changed”) by the influence of Jack Abramoff - or any other lobbyist - you pick out the tree and I’ll grab the rope (figuratively speaking for all of you humourless literalists of the left).
But a suggestion for you, dear David - if you watch more C-SPAN, you’ll note that both parties describe people from the other side of the aisle as “my dear friend,…” whether they like them or despise them.

January 10th, 2006 at 6:52 amThis is further evidence that the GOP leadership may possess the collective mind of a sociopath.
