Novak Lies: “The CIA Never Told Me It Would Cause Any Damage”

Appearing last night on Fox News’ “Hannity and Colmes”, Robert Novak denied that the CIA ever warned him that revealing Valerie Plame’s identity in his column would “cause any damage.” Therefore, he doesn’t believe he “did anything wrong.” Watch it:

(QuickTime Streaming)

Actually, he was warned. Washington Post, 7/27/05:

Harlow, the former CIA spokesman, said in an interview yesterday that he testified last year before a grand jury about conversations he had with Novak at least three days before the column was published. He said he warned Novak, in the strongest terms he was permitted to use without revealing classified information, that Wilson’s wife had not authorized the mission and that if he did write about it, her name should not be revealed.

Harlow said that after Novak’s call, he checked Plame’s status and confirmed that she was an undercover operative. He said he called Novak back to repeat that the story Novak had related to him was wrong and that Plame’s name should not be used.

Now, Novak wants to pretend like the warnings never happened. (In a subsequent column, Novak didn’t dispute Harlow on the facts but argued his warnings weren’t important.) Even moving to Fox News doesn’t insulate you completely from the truth.

NOVAK: I didn’t really say that. I said if I had it to do again, I probably wouldn’t do it. I don’t think I made any mistake at all. She was not – I don’t believe she was an undercover agent, I never have. The CIA never told me that it would cause any damage, because I don’t think it would. So that is not the regret. But it’s caused me a lot of difficulty. In this town, if you’re perceived as being in trouble, people run away from you. So just from the standpoint of self-protection near the end of your career, I probably would have just as soon not done it. But I don’t think I did anything wrong. And I thought it was an interesting part of the story in about the seventh paragraph of a story showing why they named this very strange Clinton appointment – the CIA did – to make a (sic) inquiry into a very important matter regarding the activities of the Iraqi government.

  1. Magnum DB says:

Well Fox News is the safest place to lie if you’re a Republican, because they embrace it and support it. This of course will not be the last lie from Novak. It’s only just beginning.

  2. laddie says:

That’s why he’s on FOX. He doesn’t get called on this B.S.

  3. Marie says:

He is apparently delusional about his role in the Plame leak, his responsibility and his culpability. Novak is nothing more than a political hack. He is a shill for the Republican party. His comfort status may be somewhat better on the Republican Fox-TV channel, but his inability or unwillingness to face reality is further proof that he is living in a fantasy of his own fashion, senile, well past the time to retire from public view (until he is seen in court to answer for his actions).

  4. For Truth says:

Nice frame chosen, that’s a good one.

  5. Wayne A. Schneider says:

This man has zero credibility with the viewing public who have IQs in the three-digit range. Whether he chooses to acknowledge it or not, he’s a shill for the Republican party.

I like how he refers to Ambassador Wilson as a “very strange Clinton apppointment.” I was under the belief that Ambassador Wilson was assigned to Iraq during the first Iraq war which would, therefore, make him a very strange Bush appointment. In true Fox fashion, Novak finds a way to blame Clinton.

I wonder if he got Fox to put it in his contract that he’s to have fresh puppy blood on a daily basis, something his CNN masters apparently stopped doing.

  6. Democrat Soldier says:

    This is typical rabid-right revisionism.

“Don’t pay attention to the facts, or what other people said they told me. I didn’t lie! Whose word are you going to take, someone who worked for the CIA and had a security clearance, or me?

I’m a reporter, for the love of God! Reporters never lie, or stretch the truth, or ignore facts, or make things up! Well, except for any other reporter with whom I disagree.

    Pardon me, mister President!”

Does anyone take him seriously anymore? Anyone at all? Mr. Novak is a traitor for intentionally divulging the name of an undercover agent just because he wanted the press and to back the current administration.

  7. Quisp says:

He’s a senile old bat. Can’t someone drop him off somewhere?

  8. kindness says:

Lying doesn’t count as long as you are doing it FOR bushco.

That’s why Rove, DeLay, Nay & Abramhoff are so confused. They thought they were obeying the rules.

  9. TJM says:

This story was dissected by The Daily Howler on 7/29/05. Read what Somerby says about the Novak columns and the Walter Pincus (WaPo) story of his interview with Harlow. the CIA didn’t dispute what Novak was going to write except 2 things. First that Joe Wilson’s wife didn’t authorize the trip, the CIA identified Wilson and asked his wife to contat him. Second as Novak checked with the CIA,Harlow said that if he published the story, her name should not be used. But anybody could look up Joe Wilson and discover that his wife worked for the CIA. So if it was a warning it was avery weak warning.

  10. Gus the Loving OBGYN says:

When in doubt, leave it out.

    He should be hanged.

  11. Democrat Soldier says:

#9, Do you have a link to the Daily Howler story where the “warning” was described as “very weak”?

Dem Soldier, here’s a link to the article TJM was talking about. http://www.dailyhowler.com/dh072905.shtml

The Daily Howler is a great daily read. Bob has been focusing on issues of public public education as of late, but he does do some great posts on media issues.

  14. Bush-shite says:

Is´nt Novak secretly The Mekon from Dan Dare??

    Mekonovak

  15. Optimist says:

    Fox has a news channel?

And secondly, do any of you all remember the movie “The creature from the black lagoon”? I’m tellin’ ya, Bloviak is a dead ringer.

  16. Steed Lankershim says:

You’re permitted to only talk about Joe Wilson’s wife suggesting, not suthorizing (oops Harlow lied – there goes his credibility…and TP’s), his trip. Just don’t look it up in Who’s Who. It’s been

    secretly

listed there since the Clinton administration. Shhhhh!

    Bwhahahahahaha!

  17. The Debtonator says:

Check out that picture of him. Looks like EVEN HE is choking on this bullshit.

Just a bit off topic but I just received a letter from Howard Dean begging for some money. I wrote him back expressing my complete and total disillussionment with BOTH parties and would ONLY consider donating to the dems is when I hear someone got off their ass and start protecting whats left of our constitution and start IMPEACHMENT proceedings.

REMEMBER, THESE PEOPLE WERE ELECTED BY US and I really don’t think that they’re doing so hot of a job. I say wipe the slate clean and start from scratch. NONE OF THEM deserve to be in office. Dems OR repansycans.

One of my favorite childhood memories is of my Sicilian grandfather. Sitting on the edge of his favorite TV chair watching Chet Huntley and David Brinkley on the evening news. A story about the corrupt politician du jour comes on and old gramps sucks back some snot and spits it ON THE TV SCREEN. Wiping it off with the sleeve of his flanel shirt he would mutter in broken english “bunch of crooks” and go back to the rest of the news.

Allthough what gramps done was disgusting and a bit amusing, THIS passion seems to be lost in todays America. You see, he was an Italian immigrant and was put through his paces by coming to America and starting a family. He knew FIRST HAND about achieving the American Dream and he would be DAMNED if ANY corrupt politician would destroy that.

Where has the American Dream gone? What does it really mean to each of us. Why are we allowing OUR country to be hijacked by CORRUPT ELECTED POLITICAL LEADERS?

Sitting on the blogs is all fine and dandy. It keeps us informed. But who among us is actually doing things to affect a change and is it enough? Our country is in some serious shit right now and we need to take MASSIVE ACTION RIGHT NOW to take back control of OUR country. We once were considered the greatest country in the world. We had respect. We had a budget surplus.

In a few short years ALL THAT has been destroyed. We allowed the parasites to pull the rug out from under us. How much more will we AND CAN WE endure? When are we going to fight back?

I see people EVERYDAY getting more and more fed up. To the breaking point. Our courts see RECORD foreclosures and evictions. Our economy is drowning in RECORD debt. Homelessness is at epidemic proportions. The federal government is more corrupt than ANY third world country which makes it more dangerous because THEY HAVE MORE MONEY. Money equates to power. It ALL breeds CORRUPTION.

So next time I see or hear about “illegal wiretaps against Americans” or the faux “war on terror” or LIES about how great our economy is, I’ll just take old gramps advice and hawk bac a killer lougie and let fly.

Hopefully it will hit one or more of the “bunch of crook.”

Thank TP. You folks are doing a fine job. Keep it up. TOGETHER we can AND WILL return this country to it’s FORMER greatness.

  19. Optimist says:

    Steed,
Your credibility ranks right up there with Bloviaks. In other words, you have none.

  20. Jay says:

May Novak receive the justice he so richly deserves. Life in prison for being a traitor would be a nice starting point.

Creature from the Black Lagoon…..yeah, I can see that. Definitely reptilian in skin texture and blood temperature.

Is it me or are all of these Republican shills, politicos, operatives et al. the most repulsive humans imaginable? Rove, Reed, Mehlman, Novak, Delay, Norquist, Limbaugh, Hannity, Noonan, Gillepsie, Cheney…..every one of them makes my skin crawl. I guess watching someone lie blatantly every time they utter a word can have that effect.

  21. jay says:

…unless it’s Joe Wilson. His lies are okay with me.

  22. Optimist says:

Looks like someone hijacked Jay’s moniker in #22. Now that’s a prime example of Troll/Republican values.

  23. Bush-shite says:

Perhaps we can call it a Steedism in future?

  24. Jay says:

    #22,

That would be a great point if…….Joe Wilson had lied. Unfortunately for the delusional rightwing, saying “Joe Wilson lied” and “the Democrats took Abramoff money too” doesn’t make it so.

I suppose it’s not your fault that you believe what Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity and Bill O’Reilly tell you….you’re just being good sheeple.

Don’t ever say you weren’t warned that you’ve been supporting neo-fascists.

A politics columnist. Of the most reputed in Washington. Who every day interviews lawyers and attorneys. Who supposedly knows enough the Constitution and laws. Not knowing that outing the name of a CIA operative is illegal or, at least ethically bad and dangerous? Please.

    Marie,

    “delusional like a “FOX”…

These treasonous, republiscum vipers love to play act and pretend…

Pretend they didn’t realize the depth of their treason…

Pretend that reality is for the making, telling their inbred base things over and over again until it becomes “reality” to them…

Novak is a traitor who belongs in a gulag, just like his inbred fan base and co-conspirators…

Things people say when they’re on the Fox News Cha…

Douchebag of Liberty Robert Novak, lying his ass off about the Valerie Plame leak — and expressing his concern for the one thing that truly matters to a journalist at the end of the day: self-preservation….

  32. Democrat Soldier says:

    #13,

So Novak CHOSE to print her name, when he could have omitted that information. So Novak CHOSE to “out” a CIA operative.

I guess, when you choose to do something illegal, you should be held accountable for your actions!

  33. M. Duchamp says:

I guess, when you choose to do something illegal, you should be held accountable for your actions!

No doubt, Dem Soldier! Novak is a poor excuse for a journalist, much less a human being. The only reason he exposed Plame’s name was to cause damage and intimidate others within the intelligence community. It’s so obvious, it’s laughable that any of the resident trolls here, much less the millionaire media poodles and pundits, would suggest otherwise.

  34. TJM says:

DemSoldier, the point was that if the rest of the article was published omitting only her name,it was no secret that she worked for the CIA and her name was Valerie Plame Wilson. It’s a stretch that her name was the 21st century equivalent of lord Voldemort and as a result it was illegal.

  35. Marie says:

CNN finally dumps the lying weasel, and who do they hire in his place but Mr. “Virtue” himself, Bill Bennett.

  36. Texas Dem says:

While I usually ignore most of what Novak says, I did find this interesting:

“…in this town, if you’re perceived as being in trouble, people run away from you. Tom DeLay felt that.”

Well, bwaaa, bwaaa, bwaaaaaaaa. Poor lil’ Tommy.

Now that he’s at Faux, I guess Bob thinks it’s O.K. to express his true feelings of empathy for the sleaze bag, DeLay.

Move along……nothing to apologize for here.

  37. Jay Randal says:

Novak is a known liar and snake-in-the-grass, so who cares what he thinks or claims about anything! And since he hung-out with Jeff Gannon … Did he have sex with him?

  38. M. Duchamp says:

    #33 & #35
I re-read that Howler post (my recollection was a bit foggy), and the point that TJM makes is correct.

There are numerous reasons to hate Novak, but technically speaking, Harlow’s warnings were not that strong, as is noted in this thread’s main post.

Technically (I won’t go into ethics) Novak didn’t break any laws (or else he would have been indicted). Still, the intent of Novak’s column was malicious and intended to ruin what was left of Valerie Plame-Wilson’s career.

The facts shouldn’t be stretched to prove a point, even if that point is made by people on your own team.

  39. Jay says:

    M. Duchamp,

Perhaps Novak can’t be convicted of a crime but we all know he was complicit in a premeditated act of treason. He may get indicted yet. None of the other “journalists” that were leaked to regarding Plame were sleazy enough to print her name. I guess even the hackunditry will only stoop so low.

  40. America Snoring says:

Dug this up from an old Media-Whores Online post published October 2003…

    Put Robert Novak in Jail
    (and throw away the key)
    by Linda Hirshman

Am I the only one who’s noticed that Robert Novak violated the Espionage Act? The federal law, punishable by up to ten years in jail, punishes outsiders who engage in “a pattern of activities” intended to reveal the identities of covert operatives (assuming such identities are not public information, which is virtually always the case). Certainly willingly participating in an overt “administration” campaign to out a U.S. Intelligence operative in order to punish her husband for telling the truth about the WMD fiasco would qualify as such activity.

The law also explicitly punishes insiders who leak classified information. Novak has been so closely tied to the Administration, defending it and participating in its campaign to use friendly journalists to punish its enemies, that he would also qualify as an “insider” whom the law explicitly forbids to publish than a journalist anyway. Consider that six other real journalists were offered the career making leak and turned it down. Only Novak, the opinion flak for the Republican party published it.

If John Ashcroft’s Justice Department were not entirely corrupt they’d call a grand jury and threaten Novak with prosecution under the Espionage act and then offer to cut him a deal if he names his sources. If he doesn’t tell, they can prosecute him and subpoena his notes as evidence against him. (If they had acted in a timely fashion he wouldn’t already have shredded them.

Or call a grand jury and subpoena him as a witness in the investigation of the leakers. All the talking heads (journalists all, I might add) have been hawking the line that investigations of leaks all fail, because the only person who knows who violated the nation’s security is the journalist and of course the journalist won’t tell. Balderdash!! There is no constitutional or statutory protection for journalists.

Contrary to self-serving journalist’s propaganda, the Supreme Court has repeatedly refused to interpret the First Amendment to protect journalists from the operation of otherwise constitutional law enforcement. (Branzburg v. Hayes, 1972) Although some states and lower federal courts have recognized some qualified privilege in some circumstances, it is extremely unlikely that a court would find a privilege in the grand jury where espionage is concerned. And the Ashcroft Justice Department is the gold medal winner of forum shopping for law n order judges who will bend to the prosecutor’s will where the law is unclear. Take Robert Novak to that Virginia place where John Walker Lindh went.

Witnesses who won’t testify go to jail for contempt. I suggest the cell that Father whatsisname, the pederast from Boston, occupied. Oh, and you may remember Whitewater. What Bob Novak did is no different from what Susan MacDougal did, except there’s a big difference between a little real estate hanky panky and naming the name of an undercover American spy, who’s trying to protect all of us from another September 11. Indeed, Novak is worse than Susan MacDougal for another reason. Susan wouldn’t tell on Bill Clinton for the very good reason that she says he didn’t do anything. Beyond cavil, the administration flunkies who tried to blackmail all potential Joe Wilsons into silence by threatening their own intelligence service did something. All Novak has to do is tell us who they are. Why is it so easy to contemplate a trailer trash like Susan MacDougal in leg irons but not the ever so establishment Novak, with his fancy wardrobe, his exaggerated vocabulary and universally condescending manner. The guy’s no different than the “interpreters” and “chaplains” they’re dragging off of planes from Guantanamo Bay. He sold the United States’s security from attack in exchange for the political interests of his masters in the Republican Party.

Maybe Robert Novak would like to take his three piece suit and sit in a federal prison with an incarcerated loony until the grand jury term runs out. Hey, there’s a John Peter Zenger in every generation. I doubt it. But a real democracy would test it out.

Just an note to all who think that IMPEACHMENT is a reality we can order up at will and get immediate results…..try getting your horse before the cart………I wrote my Congressman (a personal friend) asking for him to sign on to any and all orders for impeachment for this President and his VP and this is what I received back in return:

“Thank you…blah, blah, blah. As you know, the House of Reps has the sole power for impeachment. According to Article II Section 4 of the United States Constitution, ‘The President, Vice President and all civil Officers of the United States shall be removed from office on Impeachment for, and Conviction of Treason, Bribery, or other High Crimes and Misdemeaners.’ When a motion is made for investigation as it regards impeachment, it is typically referred to the House Committee on the Judiciary. After an investigation has been completed, it takes a majority vote to impeach……Currently, there is no resolution that has been introduced to impeach President Bush.”
Debtonator, have you even looked at the House Judiciary Committee lately? And who it is comprised of? And who it is dominated by? The House Judiciary is made up of 23 Republicans and only 15 Democrats. This is the body responsible for bringing an order and investigation for impeachment and it needs a MAJORITY VOTE to do so – 20 people to ask the House of Representatives to start impeachment proceedings. Does this sound even remotely possible with the present group of Repugs in control? Even if some of thes Repugs were to show some cojones and send an order to the House, just look how the numbers play out there. (Hint: the Dems are short the necessary votes)

When Howard Dean asks you to support the Democrats in this November election, he’s asking BECAUSE he needs to get Democratic candidates in place SO WE CAN BECOME THE MAJORITY. THEN YOU CAN HAVE YOUR DAMNED IMPEACHMENT!!
Right now, ALL we have is an investigation REQUEST by two dozen members of the Congress sent in December to the Select Committee on Intelligence to look into surveillance of American citizens by the NSA.
Maybe some of you people should put your money where your mouths are. Stop bitching and start doing something.
Enough is Enough! Lets get some people elected who can turn this country around! Let the moths out of your wallets. Remember, it starts with YOU.

Judy went to jail to draw attention away from her shilling for the administration in the NYT in the run up to the Iraq War. She printed the Chalabi ‘intelligence’ and needed to reestablish her credibility. What better way than a well-publicised first amendment martyrdom? Judy went to jail to protect Judy, no one else.

  46. draftedin68 says:

I think we all need to remember two things about Novak and lies:

1 – He needed a certain quantity of on-the-record lies to qualify for a job at FOX NEWS, and

2 – He needs to meet a weekly quota to keep his job at FOX NEWS.

  47. lickspittle says:

At first I felt sorry for Judy. Then I looked deeper into the whole sordid affair and found that she was just another Rerug “yes man”. The bitch deserved to go to jail as she was in cahoots with Libby. How low can people who agree with this administration go? If the MSM doesn’t give us the facts, we’ll have to find the truth elsewhere.

  54. Clif says:

All the comments that attack the CIA for not being strong enough in protesting the publication of Valire Plames name do not under stand the culture of classified info. I served in the military during the first Gulf War and had access to classified info. The request not to expose her name would have been more than required for anyone who understood the nature of nondisclosure, as Novack did. This was not his first story dealing with classified info. The statement about not reveling her name if Novak intended to go foward to me looks like Walter Pincus understood that Novak didn’t really care he was on a political mission and the facts were not important, nor was any damage to national security or danger to the CIA, it’s operatives or assets both in and out of the company going to stop Novak from completing his mission.
Besides what would we expect from the illegetimate son of Darth vader and Ann coulter, whom Yoda aborted. Yes I know there is a time issue here but the worm hole thru Novaks brain is where the time travel occured, this is also classified but not by the CIA
