VIDEO: Kennedy Calls Specter’s Bluff

This morning, Sens. Arlen Specter and Ted Kennedy sparred over Kennedy’s request to subpoena documents related to the Concerned Alumni of Princeton.

Specter insisted, on multiple occassions, that he had never received a letter from Kennedy, and used that point to disregard the request. “If it’s really a matter of importance — you and I see each other all the time — you’ve never mentioned it to me, and I do not ascribe a great deal of weight [to it],” Specter said.

Except Kennedy had sent a letter, and Specter’s office not only received it, but issued a response to Kennedy’s office. Watch Kennedy call Specter’s bluff:

UPDATE: Specter admits he discussed Kennedy’s letter in a phone call with his Chief-of-Staff. He rejected the request then but said if it was really important Kennedy should have mentioned it to him at the gym. (Kennedy explained he hasn’t been to the gym since before Christmas.) Specter has now agreed to get the records.

  5. Democrat Soldier says:

I can’t wait for the trolls to weigh in on this.

If it was a D blocking a R’s request for a subpoena, I’m sure it would be hailed as a major issue.

Since it was an R blocking a D’s request, lets hear them tell us about how minor and ineffectual this issue is to everything.

Interesting how R’s get all up in a huff when they’re blocked, but when it’s a D: “Move along, nothing to see here.”

  7. A REAL AMERICAN says:

A REAL AMERICAN: A lone vessel, bearing truth in an angry, ugly sea of liberal lies and spin. Look here, people. Specter is the chairman of that commitee, and a devout liberal. Being the devout liberal that he is, he is Ted Kennedy’s best friend. They go to the gym all the time, remember? By dropping dimes on Specter in the middle of a Senate hearing, all Kennedy did is make himself look like the blithering ass that he truly is. Let us face the inevitable truth: ALITO IS GOING TO BE CONFIRMED. All this posturing and lying by the morons (i.e. Dem Senators) on the Judicial Committee isn’t going to amount to jack shit. All they are doing is trying to pander to their lobbyist, and their base, so that they can raise some more money for their election funds. They should really stop wasting Alito’s time.

Exactly what part of Dennis Hastert’s ample ass are you unaware of?

  11. SuperEdo says:

#7: Can we make a rule that when you accuse someone of lying that you back it up with evidence? Is it especially difficult to see here that Specter is the one doing the lying?

  12. purvis ames says:

Why are all the trolls trying to hammer in the idea that Alito is a sure thing and we should all just forget about it?

  13. A REAL AMERICAN says:

    #11-
Obviously, Specter considered the source of the letter, and then discounted the request. I mean, would you respond to someone’s letter, request, correspondence, etc., if you knew that the sender was a FAT, LIBERAL, BIASED, MURDERING, POLITICAL HACK like Ted Kennedy? The man isn’t worth considering.

  14. A REAL AMERICAN says:

    #12-
Because he IS a sure thing. A lock. The man’s credentials are impeccable. All this spin, false accusations, and lies by liberals like you will not stop the Senate from confirming him.

  15. True Blue says:

I can’t wait for the trolls to weigh in on this.

Weigh in! Get it? Especially right after Chris’ comment on what trolls would say!

You didn’t know you were funny, did you? :)

  16. Spudge_Boy says:

Everybody keep in mind that the trolls said that Harriet Miers would be a shoe in.

  17. True Blue says:

    Trolls,
All you have are fat jokes on Kennedy.
Alito is not a done deal.

  18. A REAL AMERICAN says:

Most REAL AMERICANS like me are actually praying that the Dems try to filibuster Alito. Then, we can finally put that issue to rest once and for all by eliminating it altogether. You best believe we have the votes for THAT.

  19. A REAL AMERICAN says:

    #16-

Harriet Miers would have been confirmed eventually, if the Prez hadn’t forced her to step aside. Truthfully, she made all us REAL AMERICANS a little nervous. We don’t want another Suter.

  20. lickspittle says:

A real American? Real Americans do not start wars and lie to the American public. They do not spy without a warrant. If you consider Bush “presidential” you still have a lot to learn.

  21. purvis ames says:

    REAL AMERICAN
The problem with you is that you are in the minority of Real Americans who support anything that Bush does. In other words a stupid, clueless moron. As for the filibuster, if you can’t use it, it’s dead already.

  22. SuperEdo says:

Most REAL AMERICANS like me are actually praying that the Dems try to filibuster Alito. Then, we can finally put that issue to rest once and for all by eliminating it altogether. You best believe we have the votes for THAT.

Let me translate this for you, RA, to make your point clearer: Most REAL AMERICANS want to eliminate the democratic process altogether and appoint Bush the new king and the republican party his surrounding plutocracy. And – lacking any understanding of history – they also want to see the gradual eradication of individual rights and government that benefits any but the very wealthy.

Let me know if I can help out any more.

  23. Democrat Soldier says:

#19 – But, didn’t Pres. Bush say that Harriet was eminently qualified to be a Justice? Sorta what he said abou Alito?

Interesting how you can ignore the excesses of the current administration when they don’t dove-tail with your preconcieved notions of what a “real American” would do.

I served in the US Army to support the Constitution and the right to free speech. Even for numb-skulls that have sick & twisted political beliefs, like yours.

  24. A REAL AMERICAN says:

    #16-

That being said, I think it is interesting who REALLY has the power in this country. Miers would have been confirmed. The only reason why she wasn’t was because REAL AMERICANS put enough pressure on the Prez that he axed her. The Dems were powerless to stop her. Just like they are powerless and impotent now to stop Alito.

  25. RightPunch says:

Only a republican would consider a racist bigot as being a ‘lock’ with impeccable credentials. Poor things, republicans seem to hate so easily, and think so rarely.

  26. Democrat Soldier says:

#22 – Wouldn’t it be interesting if the R’s got rid of the filibuster, and then when the D’s take back the majority, they’d have to live with their actions?

Oh, sorry. My fault. The “party of personal responsibility” doesn’t believe in taking responsibility for their actions.

  27. A REAL AMERICAN says:

Lest we fall into the state that you feel comfortable in, where lies are acceptible, corruption is expected, and dissent is forbidden. 30. Cicero says:

Hasn’t the New York Times already done a story about CAP back in November? Didn’t the reporter look at the same materials Kennedy is now wanting? Why is it the NYT can get a hold of this material but Sen. Kennedy cannot? Is this request for a subpeona just grandstanding by Kennedy, or is he really serious?

    Just wondering.

ALITO: Senator, I’ve never read that maga…

KENNEDY: Well, could you think of any context that they could be…

ALITO: Hard to imagine. If that’s what anybody was endorsing, I disagree with all of that. I would

    california_reality_check,

Well the wingnuts are raised on fairy tales and propaganda, how can we expect them to live in the real world as adults? It’s just way too much to ask of them. That’s why you get crooks like Abramoff being able to sell out america, and republican delusion artists just going right along. It’s so sad to see that they could be so controlled by their fear and fantasies – but there you are. Anything to defeat abortion – something that isn’t even illegal by their own religion, yet they’re too stupid to realize.

  44. Optimist says:

    Cicero,
The answer to your question is: Rules of evidence.

If any government was STUPID enough to allow printed heresay as evidence then, let’s say, a newspaper could print a story based upon bogus information and then the government would use that as a basis to go to war. Oh yeah, that’s right, there are government officials that are that incompetent.

  47. RightPunch says:

    Gregor, great point.

Yeah, how is it specter is according to the doctor killing rightwingers simultaneously a liberal, and yet discounts liberal sources because they’re liberal again? Isn’t that a little contradictory?

  48. Democrat Soldier says:

#32 – Yeah, and the D’s thought the R’s would never regain the majority. That was when they did.

Go ahead and believe the lies that you have a choke-hold on tha majority. I’m sure you won’t be too offended when the pendulum swings back, and the R’s are in the minority.

That’s what this country is all about: clearing out the majority when they get fat & lazy and become more corrupt then the people they swept out of office.

The R’s & D’s each go through the same pattern: get majority by portraying the prior majority as “corrupt and entrenched”. Start on making reforms, but get caught up in power for the sake of power. Slide into corruption and entrenched power, until you get kicked out of the majority.

Read your history, without the rose-colored glasses. No party is above corruption, and no party in power remains in power forever. Learn it, believe it, or get swept into the trash bin of history as trying to hold back an avalanche with a water-hose.

  49. A REAL AMERICAN says:

Word around the Capitol has it that the New York Times did an extensive research project on the Rusher papers — and found absolutely nothing. 54. Democrat Soldier says:

#46 – You mean like the morals and ethics (or lack thereof) of the current administration> Rove, did you hear that? The money you took from Abramoff is now “ethical” money! DeLey, did you hear that? The money you took from Abramoff is ethical money!!

I hope and pray the morals and ethics of this administration eventually get replaced by ones that Americans can be proud of.

  55. RightPunch says:

“Actually, I am a middle-class, conservative, christian. In other words, I am representative of the vast majority of the people in this country. A REAL AMERICAN”

The majority of americans are middle class moderate secularists according to all of the polls. You do realize that you can be a secularist and christian at the same time don’t you? That’s why almost 70% say don’t overturn abortion, and be tolerant of others, something Alito (and apparently you) don’t share view wise?

“I am tolerant of every race, gender, color, and creed. A REAL AMERICAN”

Creed? How tolerant are you of conservative islamists? How tolerant are you of secularists, or agnostics? How about of pagans? What about poor people, and women who demand equal rights? How about gay people?

Republicans who always say they’re tolerant, really mean they’re tolerant of the people they like, and the rest of the world can go to hell. I’m guessing that’s the kind of intolerant bigot group you belong to? Please prove me wrong, I’d love it.

“The only thing I am intolerant of is elitist liberal democrats like you, who are trying to undermine the morals and ethics of this great nation. A REAL AMERICAN”

You sound very elitist wanna-be, how funny. By elite, do you mean educated, rational, savvy and intellectual? I can understand how that could be threatening to someone who still believes in fairy tales ‘literally’, and doesn’t realize that abortion isn’t illegal in their own bible.

  56. Libertarian says:

The American people’s view of Congress is at a long-time low at the moment and the people are sick and tired of the corruption, underhanded double-dealing, and politics as usual that your side of the aisle has made their bread and butter over the last 9 years or so.

WASHINGTON, D.C. — The conservative alumni group Concerned Alumni of Princeton (CAP) has been the subject of criticism in recent weeks, but yesterday the University itself also came under scrutiny.

Sen. Joseph Biden (D-Del.), who grilled Samuel Alito ‘72 about his CAP membership, also said that he “wasn’t a big Princeton fan.”

“I didn’t even like Princeton,” he said, to laughter from the gallery. “I mean, I really didn’t like Princeton. I was an Irish Catholic kid who thought it had not changed like you concluded it had,” referring to Alito’s earlier statement that Princeton had changed its traditional ways before he enrolled.

But Biden had nothing but praise for the University in a 2004 speech at the Wilson School.

“It’s an honor to be here,” he told the audience. “It would have been an even greater honor to have come here.”

Biden also said yesterday: “One of my real dilemmas is I have two kids who went to Ivy League schools. I’m not sure my Grandfather Finnegan will ever forgive me for allowing that to happen.”

But in his speech at Princeton, he said, “I have three children who have mercifully all finally completed undergraduate and graduate school. And I tried to get all three of them to apply here.”

He went on to recall how he tried to convince them to attend Princeton, but because they didn’t, he’s “counting on his grandchildren.”

And how the minute the Professor was exposed as the human behind the curtain, there was nothing left to fear? And Dorotht actually scolded him?

I have mixed feelings about the war, really. It is a good idea, really. Much like Ron Reagan had a vision to topple the Soviet Union, and spread Democracy to Eastern Europe and Russia, I think W had a vision to spread democracy to the middle east by toppling Saddam. If democracy can flourish, I think that will go a long way to reducing terrorism. But now, because of mistakes by the administration, the war has not gone exactly as planned. It is costly yes, but I think it will be worth it in the end if everything goes as envisioned. We won’t see the results for 10 years or more, but I think it will be worth it in the end.

  122. lickspittle says:

RA: You bring up an interesting point. One that Hillary agrees with. I don’t. I went to Vietnam so people could have the RIGHT to burn the flag. I am more interested in personal liberties. 123. Democrat Soldier says:

#121 – I hate to tell you, but it wasn’t Pres. Reagan who toppled the Soviet Union. It was the Soviet union that toppled the Soviet Union. Pres. Reagan just happened to be in office when it happened.

Based on that logic, Pres. Clinton was responsible for the 1 trillion surplus that dissappeared when Pres. ‘W’ Bush was in office.

  124. RemoveBush says:

#121 This is a pipe dream. First, have you heard of PNAC? This whole conflict was the plan from day one of the presidency. The events, that were allowed or planned, on 9/11 only set the plan in motion.

Don’t count on any positive results out of Iraq for decades. These people have been fighting each other for over a 1000 years, and we think that they are going to stop because we try to introduce democracy?

This was all about the OIL and the money that would come from the conflict.

Just because I allow someone to have their freedoms and express themm the way they feel, does in fact make me patriotic. More so than trying to place my opinions or views on someone. This is why so many soldiers have died over the years so that people can do this. To say otherwise is not being patriotic, my friend.

I am not sure what you mean by a squid or a zoomie. I was in the Army and I repaired radios for the helicopters. 35 Lima (Original) changed to 68 Lima before discharge.

  131. lickspittle says:

#121- How do you think a people that are used to a theocracy will embrace our form of “democracy”? The Soviet Union disentegrated because of their policies, not ours. How many hundreds of thousands must die for this “vision”? We have caused more terrorism, not less. Yes this administration screwed up everything that they attempted. Why couldn’t we use that money for education, New Orleans, or making American lives better? I just don’t understand your thinking and I am a veteran.

True, I got kicked out my senior year after I developed a drug habit. I had to go back and get my G.E.D. Sorry to disappoint you, but I am actually a human being, and I went through some pretty tough times. Which is why I had to go to Iraq and drive a fork lift to support my family. But the Lord has seen me through. Now get down from that Ivory Tower.

  157. For Truth says:

I am glad I started a new sub-thread about how Real American is dense, and has a low fund of knowledge.

  158. lickspittle says:

What say we talk about politics. You guys are losing me with all this religious stuff. I’m worried about the idiot we have as president in the here and now. He claimed to be a Christian too, but he sure doesn’t act or talk like one. Anyone can attend church, but how do you feel in your heart?

  159. A REAL AMERICAN says:

    #155-

Back when I went to school, the Catholic high school I attended was targeted toward middle-class families. The tuition was relatively inexpensive. It has sky-rocketed recently, but my parents were able to afford it. I did let them down when I got expelled, but I got through my troubled times, and have come through okay.

  160. For Truth says:

Getting clean is just the tip of the iceburg, once you get clean, you are still at the developmental level you were at when you started using. Also, being able to feel your feelings, cope with stress, take personal responsibility, grow up, get over yourself, stop being a victim, is the real challenge for recovering alcoholics and addicts. I bet Real American is in his twenties, still needs a lot of personal growth. As you grow up and mature, you will find your earler dense views were stupid.

  161. lickspittle says:

RA: I understand overcoming a drug habit. What I can’t understand is the faith you put in the right-wing. They have been proven to be liars, and were out of power for so long that they will do anything to retain it.

Here we go again with the personal insults. I’ll tell you, it ain’t nothing for me to wup a man’s ass. If I could, I’d jump through this screen and stomp a mudhole in your ass. Be man, and quit with the insults.

You are so making this up… If you went to school for 12 years, you’d have graduated. Otherwise, you’d have said 11 yaers since you didn’t complete the 12th year…

Most Catholics are Democrats (catholic is a synonum for liberal), are not anti-gay, and do not support war. Especially former alter boys who aspire to be the Pope… You really have no idea what you’re talking about…

  168. Jerry Mathers says:

    #163
I still think you’re lying- you do not speak like someone who has been through counseling. The first thing a recovering addict learns it to quit blaming other people for their own problems. You have zero credibility here. You’re just a hateful person, and that is the only thing that is evident from your posting.

  169. A REAL AMERICAN says:

    #162-

I put faith in the right wing, because they put faith in the individual man, and the ability of the individual man to take responsiblility in himself. I believe in smaller government, lower taxes (and a flat tax), and little or no income re-distribution. What I earn, I want to keep. I don’t believe in giving my money away to welfare duds, and all others on dependant on social programs, and have no incentive to get off. This is America. You succeed or fail based on your efforts, not on how much money you can suck out of the government. I believe in basic rights wrongs, good and evil. I am a Christian. I despise abortion and homosexuality. For all these reasons, I embrace the conservative, right-wing agenda.

  170. lickspittle says:

Real American: I am beginning to think you couldn’t find your ass with both hands, never mind wupping some man’s ass. You need a change of attitude. Either you are bullshitting or you need psychological help. You don’t sound like much of a “Christian” now. Lets forget the insults and talk politics, if you can.

  175. A REAL AMERICAN says:

    #169-

Who have I blamed for any of my problems? Like I just said, I am a firm believer in personal responsibility. If I had been a good left-winger like you, I would have blamed the government for my addiction, got on and stayed on some social program for my “disease”, gone through a roller-coaster of addiction and recovery, failed in my attempts, and probably died. Instead, I took responsibility for my condition, recieved help from my pastor and family, re-affirmed my faith, and got through the bad times.

They all have been sucking the money off the government. You see things in black and white, like Bush, but things are shades of grey. Abortion is a woman’s right and who cares if gays are doing their own thing? I am more concerned about what Bush is doing to this country.

I can give you many reasons that I despise Bush and his cronies. Does he make you feel safer? It was this government that was complicit in 9/11. Buah did not want his daddy bad-mouthed by Saddam. What a reason to go to war. It should end now. Not one more life on either side. If you are a Christian, as you profess, you must agree with this statement. Bush has done irreparable damage to this country. We cannot tolerate another three years of his rule. After all, he is above the law, is he not? It doesn’t bother you about domestic spying? That he continually lies to the American public? What has this administration accomplished?

Those of you making these inane comparison insults of calling people fascists and Hitlers have both no grasp of history and no idea of what true evil is.

Your comment is insane… Wake up and take a look at our government. It doesn’t get much more ‘evil’ than this. Hitler’s ‘evilness’ grew over the course of time. This is the very same path he started out on with theocratic decrees and police state erosions of liberty. Clearly you haven’t read a history book since third grade, or been awake since then either. Why don’t you catch up rather than hang out in here whining about us exercizing our right of free speech.

  202. SL Aronovitz says:

What disturbs me about this communication between Specter and Kennedy was not so much that Specter lied. After all, its what we’ve come to expect. The real problem is two fold. First, they are willing to lie to each other thinking that they won’t be called on it because of some professional courtesy. Secondly, I wonder how much of the crucial business of running our nation is conducted in the gym between sets or curls or a steam bath?

For once Ted Kennedy showed some balls.

    Comment by Mleko — January 12, 2006 @ 1:03 pm

Of course, I don’t just make stuff up…

“I believe today that I am acting in the sense of the Almighty Creator. By warding off the Jews I am fighting for the Lord’s work.”
    -Adolph Hitler, Speech, Reichstag, 1936

“Secular schools can never be tolerated because such schools have no religious instruction, and a general moral instruction without a religious foundation is built on air; consequently, all character training and religion must be derived from faith . . . we need believing people.”
-Adolf Hitler, April 26, 1933, from a speech made during negotiations leading to the Nazi-Vatican Concordant of 1933

“I have followed [the Church] in giving our party program the character of unalterable finality, like the Creed. The Church has never allowed the Creed to be interfered with. It is fifteen hundred years since it was formulated, but every suggestion for its amendment, every logical criticism, or attack on it, has been rejected. The Church has realized that anything and everything can be built up on a document of that sort, no matter how contradictory or irreconcilable with it. The faithful will swallow it whole, so long as logical reasoning is never allowed to be brought to bear on it.”
-Adolf Hitler, from Rauschning, _The Voice of Destruction_, pp. 239-40

“What we have to fight for…is the freedom and independence of the fatherland, so that our people may be enabled to fulfill the mission assigned to it by the Creator.”
-Adolph Hitler, Mein Kampf, pp. 125

“This human world of ours would be inconceivable without the practical existence of a religious belief.”
    -Adolph Hitler, Mein Kampf, pp.152

    Want more?

  206. Mleko says:

Do you have any examples of Bush’s theocratic decrees?

  207. unbelievable says:

In no way is Bush as artiulate as Hitler, so it makes him seem less deadly. But bear in mind that because Hitler came first, modernity requires a Political temperence of Bush… But it doesn’t erode the fact that the spirit of his intentions are still just as dangerous as Hitler’s. To be gracious, I pulled these from a pro-Bush, anti-abortion, conservative Christian website. These are the tame ones they advocate…

“The cause we serve is right, because it is the cause of all mankind. The momentum of freedom in our world is unmistakable–and it is not carried forward by our power alone. We can trust in that greater power who guides the unfolding of the years. And in all that is to come, we can know that His purposes are just and true.”
–State of the Union Address, January 20, 2004

“We need common-sense judges who understand our rights were derived from God,”
–”Understanding the President and his God”

“Religion is an important part. I never want to impose my religion on anybody else. But when I make decisions I stand on principle. And the principles are derived from who I am. I believe we ought to love our neighbor like we love ourself. That’s manifested in public policy through the faith-based initiative where we’ve unleashed the armies of compassion to help heal people who hurt. I believe that God wants everybody to be free. That’s what I believe. And that’s one part of my foreign policy. In Afghanistan I believe that the freedom there is a gift from the Almighty. And I can’t tell you how encouraged how I am to see freedom on the march. And so my principles that I make decisions on are a part of me. And religion is a part of me.”
–Third Presidential Debate, Tempe, AZ, October 13, 2004

“It is the government’s strong desire to empower this fabric, this social fabric of our society where faith-based programs large and small feel empowered, encouraged, and welcomed into changing lives.”
    –Speech in Washington D.C., June 1, 2004

“I wouldn’t pick a judge who said that the Pledge of Allegiance couldn’t be said in a school because it had the words ‘under God” in it. I think that’s an example of a judge allowing personal opinion to enter into the decision-making process, as opposed to strict interpretation of the Constitution.”
–Second Presidential Debate, St. Louis, October 8, 2004

“I believe that God wants me to be president.”
–”Understanding the President and his God”

If that last one doesn’t catch you up with us, maybe seeing the photos of the innocent Iraqi people he’s killed thus far will…

  208. unbelievable says:

    I forgot one…

“It’s also important to strengthen our communities by unleashing the compassion of America’s religious institutions. Religious charities of every creed are doing some of the most vital work in our country–mentoring children, feeding the hungry, taking the hand of the lonely. Yet government has often denied social service grants and contracts to these groups, just because they have a cross or a Star of David or a crescent on the wall. By executive order, I have opened billions of dollars in grant money to competition that includes faith-based charities. Tonight I ask you to codify this into law, so people of faith can know that the law will never discriminate against them again.”

You can’t even spell it correctly. It’s “tithing”. From tithe.

Part of our problem is that so many Americans are just like yo, just about as advanced as a peaseant or serf from the dark ages. Amazing that 1000 years can go by and a majority of the world’s population hasn’t advanced at all. You are the “useful idiots.”
