The Imperial Presidency at Work.

  1. SpudgeBoy says:

“The administration’s behavior shows how high and immediate the stakes are in the Alito nomination, and how urgent it is for Congress to curtail Mr. Bush’s expansion of power. Nothing in the national consensus to combat terrorism after 9/11 envisioned the unilateral rewriting of more than 200 years of tradition and law by one president embarked on an ideological crusade.”

    This says it all.

  2. Susan says:

I agree Spudge, he also needs Alito because Rove is about to be indicted.

Fitzgerald has been busy in Chicago indicting another scumbag in the Hired Truck Scandal.

He’s done with that and now he can turn his attention back to Washington.

  3. Don says:

There are two misconceptions currently active in this land, one that the President is Commander-in Chief of us all, and the other that the US executive and legislative branches are co-equal. One is as false as the other.

Any thoughtful reading of Articles One and Two of the US Constitution will show that the Congress has the responsibility to determine how this country should be governed, and it is then the President’s job, with his executive departments, to execute (carry out) those policies and programs.

There is nothing in the Constitution that states that the two branches are co-equal. It states that the Congress is responsible for the common defense and the general welfare, for raising, supporting and regulating military forces, for declaring war, and many other responsibilities. The President is responsible for accomplishing what is required, and is commander of the military forces in wartime.

The concept of an imperial presidency, like the one for executive privilege, is a mistaken attempt to take the US back to the old European royal system, which our Constitution was designed to counter in its wording describing the workings of a democratic republic.

  4. Marie says:

Why is not the entire nation calling the president on this?
Alito is going to sit on the Court and the balance will be then tipped very far to the right (and to Bush’s support).
I agree his intent is to deliberately stack the court with people who will keep his closest allies from jail, and will agree with his imperial actions that defy the Constitution.

  5. RemoveBush says:

Write your representatives, here is what I have written to all of them.

    Dear Senator;

In all of these issues with the president, and especially the eavesdropping issue, I am wondering why you are not questioning one important comment the WH keeps stating regarding their power. In every statement people from the WH make, they say that the president has these powers in times of war. WE ARE NOT AT WAR. Please show me the declaration of war from Congress! Congress authorized the use of the military to invade Iraq, but there was no declaration of war. Therefore, the presidents claim that he has war time powers are NULL AND VOID!

Why are you guys in Congress playing politics instead of what you were hired to do and look after the American Peoples best interest? Do something about it now. This whole thing is just the wool over our eyes, and as everyone can now see, the house of cards that Dick built is falling down. Have you ever hear of PNAC? I’m sure you have! If not, you need to read their document written in 1997. This Administration was built on performing what was written in that document, and in fact more than 70% of the Administration were members of the PNAC group. This ADMINISTRATION needs to be IMPEACHED, for crimes against America and the World.

This country can no longer believe one word this government says, due to all of the corruption in the government. Even if an honest government official says something, I would not believe it unless there was STRONG evidence to support what they say. All one has to do is look at all of the events over the last 8 months to see all of the corruption, and most of it is from the Republicans. I don’t care if it is a Republican or Democrat that is dishonest, they need to go. In fact, I would love to see this 2 party system go away as it does nothing but tear this country apart. Why can’t the laws be changed so that either party can vote to hold special meetings? Why is it that the MAJORITY gets to decide? I realize that our country is built on the majority making the decisions, but the majority is corrupt and a new law needs to ensure that the peoples voice is heard. Here’s a suggestion: 40% of the Senate vote can be enough to declare special meetings or whatever? The majority vote still holds for any laws and such, but to get discussions going only 40% of the Senate is needed to begin discussions in the Senate. This way the Senate is fair and honest, no matter who is the majority.

Please do not play politics anymore, for the sake of our country, and stand up for the American People and DEMAND IMPEACHMENT of the whole ADMINISTRATION.

Finally, I am wondering why the following questions are not being asked. If you cannot answer all of them, then I expect at least items 1, 3, and 9 to be answered.

  6. Marie says:

    Fascism has come to America.

  7. RemoveBush says:

    9) Why is it that the Secret Service (SS) did its job for the VP, but failed to for the President? The SS forcibly moved the VP down to a bunker, but they did nothing for the President who was sitting out in the open and in a place that was being broadcast. Is it because they already knew that the President was not in any danger? Or is it because this was considered another one of those so frequent exercises for this very event?

    10) Why is it that the president indicated that he watched the first plane crashed into the WTC? Why is it that Rumsfeld originally stated that a “missile” hit the Pentagon? Why is it that the VP was directing the military? How could he have been instructed by the President to handle the situation when the president was still sitting with the children? Why is none of these very BASIC and FUNDAMENTAL questions not been asked? Why is it that the people on the Hill are simply turning their heads and burring them in the sand to such obvious issues?

    11) I understand that some things the American people do not need to know, but what we don’t need to know you do. I expect that you do something about this now or the American people will find someone who will. It should be very obvious now that we are not just going to sit by and accept all of these lies from the WH without a fight. We the people, expect you to perform a search into this matter and the many others that we still do not have answers to. If this means that for the next year you only focus on these issues, I would have no problems with that and I doubt many other Americans would either. We want answers and we believe that they are long past due.

  9. HAIRY THRUST says:

Given that the Courts decided for Bush back in 2000 election, the courts are stacked already. Perhaps the courts will see their mistake, for they are weakening their own powers when they give Bush unitary executive privelege, that is, if Bush becomes all Powerful then he HAS NO NEED for the Supreme Court, Congress or the House of Representatives, or Even Cheney for that matter.
Imagine this, Bush gets Impeached and Cheney takes over.
Now thats even scarier than Bush at the Helm.

One would hope “Intelligent” peope like Alito would see their own demise when returning to a Monarchy such as under Rudolph II, Unitary Executive or Hitler-esque Powers.

Just for Grins below =) ‘K’ Street and Geometry, No Im not a Conspiracy Buff, but I do like geometry!
The layout of these streets and avenues is such that the apex angle of the pentagram at the White House is the same as the apex angles of the isosceles triangles in the hexagram: The apex angle of the pentagram formed by the intersection of Connecticut and Vermont Avenues at the White House is 48° 48′; the angle formed by the intersection of Massachusetts and New York Avenues at K street is 48° 48′; and the angle formed by the intersection of Pennsylvania and Rhode Island Avenues at K street is 48° 48′.

  10. HAIRY THRUST says:

51.6 is about the same angle of the Pyramid in Egypt as above 51.8 deg. Of course bieng a Judeo Christian society, there is not really anything Conspiracy here. Like the back of your dollar bill has the Pyramid as Well.

  11. Don says:

    RemoveBush,
The fact is that, by any commonly accepted meaning of the word, we are at war.
Another fact: Constitutionally, the President has no additional powers in wartime except to serve as military commander.

Besides what was stated here about the signing statement don’t forget they also changed the army manual to add a classified section on torture so following the manual now results in torture.

The methods being used were reverse engineered from torture experienced by our POW’s in Vietnam under a program called SERE. These methods are not useful for intelligence gathering. They are specificly intended to break the will.
Men, women and children have been tortured. Some have been forced to watch their family members suffer. I know of no greater disgrace brought apon the United States by its President.

Don, I beg to differ. Just because the word WAR is used, does not mean that the word makes the meaning.

So does that mean that when we were at “War on Drugs”, or “War on Terror”, or “War on (you fill in the blank)” means that we are litteraly at WAR? NO it does not.

By just using the word, does not make the situation mean the word. CONGRESS DID NOT DECLARE WAR, so even if the constitution had anything in it that says the president has WARTIME POWERS, this would not be the case in this very situtation. WAR is defined in our constitution as being DECLARED by Congress. Since Congress has not done so, this conflict is not a WAR.

According to recent polls, 56% of this nation says Judge Alito SHOULD be blocked if he’ll overturn Roe. Judge Alito implied Bush could invade Iran without the consent of congress through unlimited presidential powers. The American people will not stand for another unprovoked invasion of a country. The citizens of this great country are starting to pay attention to the corruption in Washington and we are going to hold our elected officials accountable for the way they vote.

Our elected officials represent us. And as such, we expect that they will defend the constitution and protect the citizens of the United States of America with their vote against Judge Alito.

Steelers vs the Broncos at Mile High (aka Invesco Field)!!!!!!

The Steelers are my best friends team. So, my two favorite teams are playing in the Championship games and my best friend and my team are playing in the NFC championship.
