“The administration’s behavior shows how high and immediate the stakes are in the Alito nomination, and how urgent it is for Congress to curtail Mr. Bush’s expansion of power. Nothing in the national consensus to combat terrorism after 9/11 envisioned the unilateral rewriting of more than 200 years of tradition and law by one president embarked on an ideological crusade.”
There are two misconceptions currently active in this land, one that the President is Commander-in Chief of us all, and the other that the US executive and legislative branches are co-equal. One is as false as the other.
Any thoughtful reading of Articles One and Two of the US Constitution will show that the Congress has the responsibility to determine how this country should be governed, and it is then the President’s job, with his executive departments, to execute (carry out) those policies and programs.
There is nothing in the Constitution that states that the two branches are co-equal. It states that the Congress is responsible for the common defense and the general welfare, for raising, supporting and regulating military forces, for declaring war, and many other responsibilities. The President is responsible for accomplishing what is required, and is commander of the military forces in wartime.
The concept of an imperial presidency, like the one for executive privilege, is a mistaken attempt to take the US back to the old European royal system, which our Constitution was designed to counter in its wording describing the workings of a democratic republic.
Why is not the entire nation calling the president on this?
Alito is going to sit on the Court and the balance will be then tipped very far to the right (and to Bush’s support).
I agree his intent is to deliberately stack the court with people who will keep his closest allies from jail, and will agree with his imperial actions that defy the Constitution.
Write your representatives, here is what I have written to all of them.
Dear Senator;
In all of these issues with the president, and especially the eavesdropping issue, I am wondering why you are not questioning one important comment the WH keeps stating regarding their power. In every statement people from the WH make, they say that the president has these powers in times of war. WE ARE NOT AT WAR. Please show me the declaration of war from Congress! Congress authorized the use of the military to invade Iraq, but there was no declaration of war. Therefore, the presidents claim that he has war time powers are NULL AND VOID!
Why are you guys in Congress playing politics instead of what you were hired to do and look after the American Peoples best interest? Do something about it now. This whole thing is just the wool over our eyes, and as everyone can now see, the house of cards that Dick built is falling down. Have you ever hear of PNAC? I’m sure you have! If not, you need to read their document written in 1997. This Administration was built on performing what was written in that document, and in fact more than 70% of the Administration were members of the PNAC group. This ADMINISTRATION needs to be IMPEACHED, for crimes against America and the World.
This country can no longer believe one word this government says, due to all of the corruption in the government. Even if an honest government official says something, I would not believe it unless there was STRONG evidence to support what they say. All one has to do is look at all of the events over the last 8 months to see all of the corruption, and most of it is from the Republicans. I don’t care if it is a Republican or Democrat that is dishonest, they need to go. In fact, I would love to see this 2 party system go away as it does nothing but tear this country apart. Why can’t the laws be changed so that either party can vote to hold special meetings? Why is it that the MAJORITY gets to decide? I realize that our country is built on the majority making the decisions, but the majority is corrupt and a new law needs to ensure that the peoples voice is heard. Here’s a suggestion: 40% of the Senate vote can be enough to declare special meetings or whatever? The majority vote still holds for any laws and such, but to get discussions going only 40% of the Senate is needed to begin discussions in the Senate. This way the Senate is fair and honest, no matter who is the majority.
Please do not play politics anymore, for the sake of our country, and stand up for the American People and DEMAND IMPEACHMENT of the whole ADMINISTRATION.
Finally, I am wondering why the following questions are not being asked. If you cannot answer all of them, then I expect at least items 1, 3, and 9 to be answered.
9) Why is it that the Secret Service (SS) did its job for the VP, but failed to for the President? The SS forcibly moved the VP down to a bunker, but they did nothing for the President who was sitting out in the open and in a place that was being broadcast. Is it because they already knew that the President was not in any danger? Or is it because this was considered another one of those so frequent exercises for this very event?
10) Why is it that the president indicated that he watched the first plane crashed into the WTC? Why is it that Rumsfeld originally stated that a “missile†hit the Pentagon? Why is it that the VP was directing the military? How could he have been instructed by the President to handle the situation when the president was still sitting with the children? Why is none of these very BASIC and FUNDAMENTAL questions not been asked? Why is it that the people on the Hill are simply turning their heads and burring them in the sand to such obvious issues?

11) I understand that some things the American people do not need to know, but what we don’t need to know you do. I expect that you do something about this now or the American people will find someone who will. It should be very obvious now that we are not just going to sit by and accept all of these lies from the WH without a fight. We the people, expect you to perform a search into this matter and the many others that we still do not have answers to. If this means that for the next year you only focus on these issues, I would have no problems with that and I doubt many other Americans would either. We want answers and we believe that they are long past due.
Given that the Courts decided for Bush back in 2000 election, the courts are stacked already. Perhaps the courts will see their mistake, for they are weakening their own powers when they give Bush unitary executive privelege, that is, if Bush becomes all Powerful then he HAS NO NEED for the Supreme Court, Congress or the House of Representatives, or Even Cheney for that matter.
Imagine this, Bush gets Impeached and Cheney takes over.
Now thats even scarier than Bush at the Helm.
One would hope “Intelligent” peope like Alito would see their own demise when returning to a Monarchy such as under Rudolph II, Unitary Executive or Hitler-esque Powers.
Just for Grins below =) ‘K’ Street and Geometry, No Im not a Conspiracy Buff, but I do like geometry! Don, I beg to differ. Just because the word WAR is used, does not mean that the word makes the meaning.
So does that mean that when we were at “War on Drugs”, or “War on Terror”, or “War on (you fill in the blank)” means that we are litteraly at WAR? NO it does not.
By just using the word, does not make the situation mean the word. CONGRESS DID NOT DECLARE WAR, so even if the constitution had anything in it that says the president has WARTIME POWERS, this would not be the case in this very situtation. WAR is defined in our constitution as being DECLARED by Congress. Since Congress has not done so, this conflict is not a WAR.

According to recent polls, 56% of this nation says Judge Alito SHOULD be blocked if he’ll overturn Roe. Judge Alito implied Bush could invade Iran without the consent of congress through unlimited presidential powers. The American people will not stand for another unprovoked invasion of a country. The citizens of this great country are starting to pay attention to the corruption in Washington and we are going to hold our elected officials accountable for the way they vote.
Our elected officials represent us. And as such, we expect that they will defend the constitution and protect the citizens of the United States of America with their vote against Judge Alito.
Steelers on the 2 or 3 with 1:17 left on the clock. They go for it and Bettis fumbles. The Colts recover and run it back to their own 45. Peyton gets the Colts up to the 27 of the Steelers and Vanderjat wiffs it.
Steelers vs the Broncos at Mile High (aka Invesco Field)!!!!!!
The Steelers are my best friends team. So, my two favorite teams are playing in the Championship games and my best friend and my team are playing in the NFC championship.
I hope your rootin for the Bears Spudge. I’m rootin blue across the board. ( I know Denver aint blue but they’ll get theirs handed to them next week) Sorry, I gotta go with the Steelers.
Yes, Susan, the Bears must win. I’ve been to Chicago a couple of times in my day. Love the town. I have good friends from there and talk to them every day.
I thought it was interference in the end zone on the final pass play by Indianapolis.
The Steelers beat the pants off of the Colts. Hats off to them.

Challenge to Bush Initiative Reinstated
The Associated Press
Saturday 14 January 2006
Madison, Wis. – A group can sue the federal government over claims that President Bush’s faith-based initiative is an unconstitutional endorsement of religion, a federal appeals court ruled.
Agree. It is unethical for Bush to nominate someone who isn’t squeaky clean. Alito is “bizarre”(Kennedy), and already has a conflict of interest because he was coached by Bush attorney(Feingold). Abortion not withstanding.
I emailed Feinstein, too. But I live in Texas and it was rejected. Every other senator I email out of state responds.
Hairy,
Thanks. I went through the image routine with msnusers and the TP image option but the image (#30) turned out to be a red cross, as . has so kindly illustrated above.
We are just kidding Father Paul. I never expected my home team the Bears to win. It was a miracle they got this far. I am rooting for Seattle and Pittsburgh next week though.
Hey Spudge – your boys did pretty well today. Congrats!
Next week’ll be real fun. You’d better hope Pittsburg is
a cindarella team. They looked like a good defense.
On thread – Of Course this administration thinks they are the law. That shouldn’t be a surprise to most.
What I really find surprising is that the libertarians haven’t gotten up in arms louder.
But yea, that’s all the reason I need to be against Alioto. He’s already said he’ll rule what bushco is doing is legal. It’ll set back democracy 100 years.

Bush and fueled by fear and deceit. When in fact we the people now live in fear of the government and how it will crush its citizens next. Any, government that, allows it’s own policies to deny it’s elderly access to life saving medications as the new Medicaid/Medicare have done in this “transition period” dipicts a government that is unjust and wicked. As these medications are eeded to sustain the lives of those who depend on them. Just like our freedoms and liberties where here yesterday and gone when Alito is confirmed. These crooked bastards make Don Corleone wet himself with glee and approval. Except Vito had class and looked after the people. For those of you who wish to remove GOD from our laws and constitution I wish you well with the New Government of China and it’s constitution as our rights and liberties are the Inailiable rights given to us by God not those that are dictated by a facist pig.
This says it all.

January 15th, 2006 at 2:56 pmBushco Claims to be Christian. So, yes , Bushco Has Enemies Officially
HOT! TIP! – Well yeah if you want to play word games, and that is EXACLTY what the Bush Administration is doing. It’s about what our Constitution says though. Your arugument is not totally just, as the word Freedom is used in our Constitution, and is the basis of our Constitution.
Shouldof, Couldof, Wouldof….

#22(cutnpaste) . freedom is defined in our constitution as being DECLARED by Congress.

its time for congress to get its act together .
Now is the time for all good men and women to come to the aid of their country.
Fasicm will come to America wrapped in the flag carrying the cross. s. lewis
Read Sinclair Lewis’s book: It Can’t Happen Here, about how quickly and quietly fasicm will take over America while we sleep “all secure” in our beds…
January 15th, 2006 at 3:30 pmOkay, I just proved that I’m computer illiterate. How do Spudge and Hairy do that, anyhow?
January 15th, 2006 at 3:33 pmIf it was a declared WAR then his war powers ended with :
“MAJOR COMBAT OPERATIONS HAVE ENDED.”
(this codpiece is chaffing my nuts.)
January 15th, 2006 at 3:34 pmThe Colts need a pair of gossamer wings to get that horse to fly. I hope I haven’t backed the wrong horse.
The buck stops when Bill Cower and the Steelers come to town.
Get Bush out and put Cower in Air Force One.
Get Bill Cower down there in Norlans. He’ll be able to clean up that mess.
He is doing a heckuva job.
I’m stunned. However, it ain’t over until it’s over.
January 15th, 2006 at 3:35 pmHas Bush figured out which sort of salute the people in America should give him when he parades around in front of the military yet?

January 15th, 2006 at 3:49 pm#34. Or, Mission accomplished?
January 15th, 2006 at 3:50 pmAccording to recent polls, 56% of this nation says Judge Alito SHOULD be blocked if he’ll overturn Roe.
And as such, we expect that they will defend the constitution and protect the citizens of the United States of America with their vote against Judge Alito.

click on BSV dated January 11, 2006. You will see how well the imperial dunce is doing his job.
January 15th, 2006 at 4:01 pmOMFG, the end of that game was insane.
This is turning out to be very interesting.
January 15th, 2006 at 4:35 pmOh, hell. Congress is not going to be able to curtail bush. That’s a joke. Impeach the bastard.
January 15th, 2006 at 4:37 pm#35 Ron, Payton Manning is taking a very cold shower.. Ha, ha, the Bushie loving pansy lost even when the refs tried to force a Colts a win.
How’s that for Justice!
Now its time for the Bears to beat the pants off of the Panthers.
January 15th, 2006 at 4:38 pmI hope your rootin for the Bears Spudge. I’m rootin blue across the board. ( I know Denver aint blue but they’ll get theirs handed to them next week) Sorry, I gotta go with the Steelers.
January 15th, 2006 at 4:41 pmSusan, you just let the cat out of the bag. You are either married to or in actuality
January 15th, 2006 at 4:43 pmare thedebtonater. Da bears.
January 15th, 2006 at 4:44 pmAboslutely not Susan.
The Broncos are my number one team. The Seahawks are my secondary team. I want to see a Broncos Seahawks Superbowl. Sorry, but the Bears gotta go down.

Madison, Wis. – A group can sue the federal government over claims that President Bush’s faith-based initiative is an unconstitutional endorsement of religion, a federal appeals court ruled.

Agree (none / 0)

January 15th, 2006 at 7:26 pmThanks. I went through the image routine with msnusers and the TP image option but the image (#30) turned out to be a red cross, as . has so kindly illustrated above.
People, people!!! Why can’t we all just get along?
All of his division over a football game… Don’t you all agree that it’s just a game?
THIS is what is tearing our nation apart. Not the fact that the ruling party in this country is absolutely corrupt.
I have to admit, I’ve been too busy to watch any of the matches.
January 15th, 2006 at 8:04 pmWe are just kidding Father Paul. I never expected my home team the Bears to win. It was a miracle they got this far. I am rooting for Seattle and Pittsburgh next week though.
Yes, flyman, the Debtonator is my husband.
Did you catch our movie yet?
Here it is…http://www.megaupload.com/?d=QOOM326H
January 15th, 2006 at 8:23 pmHey Spudge – your boys did pretty well today.
January 15th, 2006 at 8:59 pmkindness,
Seahawks shouldn’t have a problem with the Panthers.
I agree, Broncos need to be at their best to beat the Steelers.
January 15th, 2006 at 9:22 pmPaul .(You are not my father, therefore i will not call you father, you are the enemy)
the fact IS that the ruling party in this country is absolutely corrupt.
And so Are The Den of Thieves(Churches)
I Do believe in a One Rule Party, NOT , a thousand ruling PARTY.
January 15th, 2006 at 9:31 pmChinas One Rule Policy.
No such animal as Freedom. not even animals are free.
THE CHURCH LIED!
yeah those churches have been killing us all for some time now. especially them evangelicals and catholics. although the islamists do a pretty good job as well. as for bush and company. fuggetaboutit. the country will be on its knees three months from now both economically and environmentally. head for the hills brothers and sisters.
January 15th, 2006 at 11:09 pmI agree, Broncos need to be at their best to beat the Steelers.

That’s gonna be one helluva a contest!
January 16th, 2006 at 9:04 amI’m not a jock but I am a sports fan. Maybe we should ask Judd for a sports open thread for playoff weekends.
January 16th, 2006 at 9:47 amThat is probably a good idea kindness. I will send an e-mail.
January 16th, 2006 at 1:20 pm“WE THE PEOPLE†who are called unpatriotic for standing up for our Inaliable rights as guaranteed by our constitution , can not idly standby as the laws and institutions that have been set in place to ward off such evil plans and devices are shredded before our eyes in the name of the Almighty Fascist camp of George W.
