In December, Sen. Conrad Burns (R-MT) promised to return the approximately $150,000 he received from Abramoff, his clients, and his associates:
This is an important step that all public officials should take in order to renew the faith of Montanans, and all Americans, in their government. We can and must set a higher ethical standard.
Burns also added that he “instructed [his] staff to work with the Montana Wyoming Tribal Leaders Council to identify an appropriate Native American charitable entity to which the contributions received directly from Mr. Abramoff and his associates may be donated.”
But instead of working with the Council or returning the money to its original donors, Burns sent $111,000 directly to the Montana Wyoming Tribal Leaders Council, whose lobbyist, Stan Ullman, is a former Burns staffer.
Round and round Abramoff’s money goes, where it stops nobody knows.
Love the picture.
"Right here is $150,000. Watch ol' Burnsie make it disappear. Ta da!"
January 17th, 2006 at 11:48 amLooking for ethical behaviour from senator burns is like looking for gold in a pig's ass, you'll find nothing but shite and the pig usually likes it.
January 17th, 2006 at 11:50 amahhhhh i just love the mafia-thuglicans.....we need to arrest all of these jacklegs..

January 17th, 2006 at 12:10 pmAt the Washington Post
There is an on-line session with Howard Kurtz, Tuesday, Jan. 17, at noon ET: Critiquing the Press. Now! Maybe he has some of these answers.
" well, its now three hours and counting since Willis claimed that "Abramoff did direct donations to Democratic candidates and committees. Our reporters have documents showing this to be the case" and also claimed that he was going to get those documents posted...but instead of posting these "explosive" documents, the Post deletes Willis's claim...."

January 17th, 2006 at 12:26 pmBrass ones. Big, solid, gold-plated, brass ones.
January 17th, 2006 at 12:51 pmI have never seen the shell game played with $150,000 before.
January 17th, 2006 at 12:52 pmWhy didn't Senator Burns return the money to the original donors?
January 17th, 2006 at 1:19 pmWho says chutzpah is killing your parents and crying for mercy since you are an orphan. I believe we have a new definition.
January 17th, 2006 at 1:30 pmWhat does giving the money back or giving the money away to charity have to do with anything??? ... after you have been caught and exposed? Is that supposed to be some kind of "honorable" gesture? When you are caught with your pants at your ankles there is nothing you can do after that to change the image in peoples minds... YOU HAVE BEEN BOUGHT AND SOLD.

January 17th, 2006 at 1:59 pmI have been thinking about this a lot. I think Senator Burns is trying to show that he did not benefit from the criminal activity of the Abramoffs or their associates. I still think he should have returned the money to the Abramoffs.
Now it looks like he is using the Abramoffs money to associate himself with a different set of crooks. This is using the money from one bank heist to fund the next.
Someone tell me I'm wrong.
I agree with Skeptic (#14).
When he makes a promise to come clean, he needs to keep and come clean. Even if he didn't return the money to the original sources, he should have done what others did and donated them to REAL charities, not to reward a former staff member, continuing the cronyism and pay-to-play that started all this in the first place.
January 17th, 2006 at 2:18 pmDump that red state mofo overboard and full steam ahead maties...
January 17th, 2006 at 2:38 pmCorruption is what corruption does.
January 17th, 2006 at 4:48 pmYou know, there isn't many comments here, because there isn't really anything to say, for either side.
This corruption is a blatant and in your face as anything ever gets.
And it's so bad, that even the right winged trolls can't think of any way to justify it.
It's sickening. Absolutely sickening.
I think I will go turn on 24 so I can vomit.
January 17th, 2006 at 7:20 pmI agree with Skeptic (#14) and neo-gones wonderful poetry.
Although I now live in the wonderful state of Vermont, Montana is my "homestate." I still remember when Conrad was a dairy farmer and a county commissioner. Be he sure was always an opportunist and was such easy prey for the slick likes of Abramoff and the powerful fascism of the Republican Party.
Funny, I left my teenage "Goldwater" connection to the repuglican party and supported McGovern. I promise that I had nothing to do with Vermont senator Jim Jeffords leaving the Rupuglican Party.
January 17th, 2006 at 8:02 pmOur senior Senator who, by the way, turns 71 this month, seems to have stuck his big foot in yet another political cowpie, and the stench from this country bumpkin is getting worse by the day -- even on those days when he doesn't open his mouth and put his big cowpied boot in it.
January 17th, 2006 at 9:29 pmWow, looks like McCain-Feingold is really working!!
If you want to fix the problem, take the money off the table--cut spending.
Of course, dems (and most repubs, sadly) want to increase spending, putting more money up for grabs to special interest lobbies.
January 18th, 2006 at 9:01 amThat right wing al cracker Nelson from Nebraska is voting yes on Alito...
...Dems have got to clean house, get rid of their red state traitors...
January 18th, 2006 at 9:35 amNot many comments here on Sen. Burns, so that means he must RESIGN in shame from the Senate!
January 18th, 2006 at 1:12 pmall these re-pube-lick-cans are donating their abramoff money - my question is are they claiming it as tax deduction- and then getting it back from you and me?
January 18th, 2006 at 5:34 pmIt may be to late for everything .They need to get rid of the Dems who vote in favor of Bush. But the american people to blame also who can`t see the futurethat looks bad NO JOBS NO INSURANCE NOHEALTH CARE.Why do they still follow such an adminstration.
January 19th, 2006 at 11:35 amI remember a few years back when Burns and Baucus both returned money ($5000 i do believe)they had been given as donations. In exchange they wrote letters to a judge for a local family to get a reduced sentence for their daughter. It worked, though I think the money was returned after the press cought wind. I can't help but wonder what kind of favors $150,000 bought. Burns won't be reelected in montana maybe now "the man from missouri" as he once told me he liked to be called can go home.
