Halliburton gave troops contaminated drinking water.

“Troops and civilians at a U.S. military base in Iraq were exposed to contaminated water last year and employees for the responsible contractor, Halliburton, couldn’t get their company to inform camp residents, according to interviews and internal company documents.”

Poisoning troops is not patriotic. Getting them home safely is.

  2. unbelievable says:

Of course not, they can’t go and do something that might make them look all weak and human or anything.

  3. believable says:

ThinkProgress is not telling the truth:

A military medical unit that visited Camp Ramadi in mid-April found nothing out of the ordinary in terms of water quality, said Marine Corps Maj. Tim Keefe, a military spokesman. Water-quality testing records from May 23 show the water within normal parameters, he said.

“The allegations appear not to have merit,” Keefe said.

  4. Anti Warhol says:

I just don’t understand. Shouldn’t there be some kind of standard where if you do shoddy work, you overcharge for your products and services, get convicted for numerous cases of fraud, and you harm your customers, you have to go out of business?

Oh wait, I guess that’s called the “free market”.

  5. classical liberal says:

Come on, ThinkProgress, you’re posting rank propaganda.

Why should someone be banned for simply quoting from the same article ThinkProgress linked to? That makes no sense at all.

believable and classical liberal are the same person: wwallace.

This user was not banned for his comments on this thread, but for repeated violations of the Terms of Use. Specifically, personal attacks on other users.

Now this user clearly is intent on disrupting this blog and hijacking every thread. We aren’t going to allow that to happen.

As for the Pentagon’s denials, they are now the subject of a congressional investigation.

  10. RemoveBush says:

Well, I for one don’t believe anyone from the government when they say something. I beleive a independant person much more than a person who is just following orders. We all know that if a medical commander is ordered to report nothing is wrong they are going to do that.

The only ones that wont are the ones that will end up in levenworth for not obeying an order. If an independant person says that this was happening, then I believe it until an Independant investigation states otherwise. For one thing, there seems to be enough proof that the water was contaminated according to the article. Especially since many soldiers were getting sick.

    As to your post, unbelievable,
then why did Judd BAN Ryan – the only person here who could put him in his place?????
Yet assbag can continue to spout his garbage.
Yes, Judd, I know you offered the olive branch, albeit conditional, but you’ve wounded his pride and his right to Free Speech!
Why does shithead Wally still have that privilage here?
You made a huge mistake and should ask Ryan back— no conditions.
    My 2 cents…..

  12. Judd says:

    Ryan frequently had valuable contributions.

But he did not put wwallace in his place. In fact, he would frequently engage in lengthy, thread-destroying, diatribes with wwallace. It made the problem much worse.

If I’m serious about trying to create a community here, I need Ryan’s word that he wouldn’t do that again before I let him back in.

That’s what I’m aiming to do here: create a community. Not a community where there is any one opinion. But a community where people express their opinions not call each other names.

Needless to say, it’s a work in progress.

  13. extreme unction says:

ryan was breaking the rules, too, and it was only fair to ban him as well. he was taking wwallace’s outbursts as giving him carte blanche to counterattack. he didn’t deserve any slack just cos he was on the left. the threads have been better w/o both of them.

    my 2 cents.

  14. Anti Warhol says:

Well, it looks like the information is comingn from an interal KBR memo, so I don’t see how it could benefit KBR to lie about something like that. In my experience, companies lie to cover up potentially harmful mistakes, not create them out of thin air.

If you think about it, the article cites “normal levels recorded in records from May 23rd”, the contamination could just have happened in a different time frame.

And Halliburton IS a part of this Administration. They wouldn’t be in Iraq now if it weren’t for Peeping George and Dick-tator blowing the place up…

I saw a 60 minutes episode last season in which a soldier was complaining about having to guard these Halliburton employees when he was paid a fraction of their salary and put at greater risk because of them. Can’t say I blame him.

  20. Judd says:

Halliburton serves contaminated water to troops – whistleblower (HalliburtonWatch) 20 Sep 2005

“Outrage overflowed on Capitol Hill this summer when members of Congress learned that Halliburton’s dining halls in Iraq had repeatedly served spoiled food to unsuspecting troops… But the outrage apparently doesn’t end with spoiled food. Former KBR employees and water quality specialists, Ben Carter and Ken May, told HalliburtonWatch that KBR knowingly exposes troops and civilians to contaminated water from Iraq’s Euphrates River. One internal KBR email provided to HalliburtonWatch says that, for ‘possibly a year,’ the level of contamination at one camp was two times the normal level for untreated water.”

ryan n.e.a.t-take the olive branch. give judd a chance to keep iri & wwallace out.

  67. Neal says:

Looks like Bush’s environmntal policies have made it took Iraq.

  68. RnEa t says:

Joefriday, and everyone else – just noticed the thread and wanted to say thanks for the call for my return. I already told Judd that if he enforced the rules consistently I would be happy to comply with them. His allowance of hate speech from I-RIGHT-I, Gary Ruppert, MightyTranny and wwallace is what drove me to attack back in the first place. If Judd would do his job or hire someone more capable to do it, and actually enforce the terms of use consistently, I’d be more than happy to comply with those terms myself.

I got sick of accepting hate speech that was often directed specifically at me by those hate merchants. The slack mismanagement of the terms of use by Judd called for a response – even if Judd was incapable or unwilling to deliver it himself. Before he banned me I called for him to do more, and do his job – and the result was me being banned, and him leaving most of the most horrendous and vile trolls free to post ILLEGAL HATE SPEECH!

Just so everyone knows, I responded very clearly to Judd’s email, and asked him why I was the only person being forced to comply with the terms. Why must I be ’special’ and agree to them, when he does not hold trolls accountable to them. Am I supposed to return, and just take the homophobic, hate speech that I-RIGHT-I/MightyTranny delivered daily without response? Because heaven knows, Judd won’t stop them.

When he wouldn’t answer, I began sending him emails with the latest racist rants from I-RIGHT-I, or the hate rhetoric from mighty aphrodite and wwallace, and ask why those violations were being permitted. His response was childish and irresponsible. Judd had the ba11$ to tell me that the only reason he hadn’t banned I-RIGHT-I was because I pointed out his violation of the terms. I thought the point of the terms of use were specifically to say, don’t print racist or other hate speech – yet I can pull up dozens of racist, homophobic and sexist hate speech right now.

That prick wwallace was right about one thing, and that’s Judd’s more interested in his personal ego than properly administering the blog. The only two people who were banned were wwallace and me, and we were the only ones that were openly critical of Judd not enforcing the terms of use. It’s clear that wwallace’s criticism were stupid tongue in cheek nonsense as always, but he himself was an example of how Judd wasn’t doing his job. I can understand him getting rid of wwallace, but in my case it was clear retaliation and childish hypocrisy on the part of Judd. I responded to wwallace because Judd wouldn’t – pure and simple.

I have tremendous respect for the research and clarity that Judd often brings to threads and the arguments – but like most bright minds, he clearly suffers from egotistical and irrational bouts from time to time. His handling of me was just such a bout. His blog, and his right to be an a$$, just like it’s my right to say I don’t want to post and contribute for a self righteous hypocrit, I’d go over to one of the rightwing blogs if I wanted that.

So everyone knows, I have a lot of interests, responsibilities and activities in my life, and I am unwilling to invest more time in posting here. Especially when Judd has made it clear that he’s going to be uneven and unfair in his enforcement of the rules. Because he remains as irrational and hypocritical as he was with me, I’m taking time off from contributing and posting. And Judd, you talks a fine game about wanting government to be consistent and not hypocritical – try living up to your own criticism some time, I’d respect you a lot more. I will believe you more when your own actions are more noble and less inconsistent and juvenile.

And I want to share with the belog that I’m convinced that I-RIGHT-I and mighty aphrodite are in fact tied to Judd in some way. When I complained about a specific set of rants from I-RIGHT-I, Judd said they hadn’t all been posted by I-RIGHT-I. How would he know that? How would he know which I-RIGHT-I is ‘real’? Sorry, but that’s way to suspicious to be a coincidence. I now strongly believe that Judd is ’salting’ the blog with dissent and controversy to create interest by having someone or even himself pose as I-RIGHT-I. It would explain why I-RIGHT-I was completely different over the holidays when Judd was on vacation.

Other blogs have been known to do this sort of fakery, and based on his email, it’s clear he doesn’t get rid of specific posters because he ‘knows’ them or ‘is’ them.

Judd, I hope you get your act together, and when and if you do let me know – not that I believe you’ll have either the guts or accountability to do so.

    Comment by RnEa t

    Who cares, C-Ya!

RDD, part of what you quoted:”Halliburton’s dining halls in Iraq had repeatedly served spoiled food to unsuspecting troops” reminds me of something I read not all that long ago (maybe here even!) about staff cafeterias in either KBR or another sub of Haliburton.

What was happening is that the American staff, ‘imported’ staff, engineers, office staff etc., felt so bad about the food that was being dished up to the native Iraqi and Jordanian, Kuwaiti (you get the idea), that they save some of their own meals, or even bought extra, so that they could give this to the ‘hired help’. Said was garbage crap the Mid east workers were getting, cruel and slop (my parphrasing) and unpalatable crap to eat.

I think it is no surprise to see this untreated water reports, I have the strong impression there is very serious abuse of a servile class going on. The mid-easterners are desperate for any work, and get exploited immensely.

PS RnEa t, but I have a forum, and have moderated sveral large ones (50,000 hits a day, 100,000 members) and I spot all the characteristics that tell me all about you. Sorry if I don’t have sympathy, okay?

Sadly, that is true, but I do think that was their intent, to needle Ryan until he got banned. And make no mistake about it, their personal attacks on Ryan were merciless and occurred first. If you would just ban the idiots and let Ryan back in that would be great. There is nothing wrong with dissent. People like Ruppert and Wallace don’t contribute dissenting opinions. As I said, that is not their intent. It would be nice to have real debate. Regurgitating talking points is no substitute for debate. In fact, real debate is not possible for them. They don’t like to lose.

Too bad. You most certainly did put them in their places. That’s why they worked on you and got you banned. I watched it happen over the last year. From Judd’s perspective, he has to work at being non-partisan. It’s not easy. Much easier to run a forum like Freep or any right wing blog and just ban dissent. I know of a few forums where you could post whatever without fear, and even invite your “little friends” over so they could get the beating they so richly deserve. Let me know if you are interested. It’s almost like a liberal/progressive Anti-Idiotarian Rottweiler, (which is where I used to go to develop my armor, until I figured out they were just chihuahuas, no bark or bite, just yap and quiver). I think you just let it get personal, let it get to you. You can’t let them do that.

    1) When Bunnatine Greenhouse, (a procurement specialist @ I believe the Pentagon), blew the whistle on “no bid” contracts to Halliburton risking her livelihood by testifying to a congressional committee, then was summarily demoted a few months later WHY didn’t the Democrats in the House and Senate form a ring around her and protect her?

(same with FBI translator Sybil Edmonds who was fired…)

    2) Why hasn’t the MSM used their resources and personnel to find the OBVIOUS profiteering link btwn Bushiva (and his family) and L’il Dick (and his family) and Halliburton have?

  81. WC says:

What is sad about all this is the Republicans’ lack of concern regarding this. From the news article:

Sen. Byron Dorgan, D-N.D., who will chair the session, held a number of similar inquiries last year on contracting abuses in Iraq. He said Democrats were acting on their own because they had not been able to persuade Republican committee chairmen to investigate.

This lack of concern sounds familiar, doesn’t it?

Think these accusations have no merit? Well, let me tell you all one thing. I know of a family who has suffered because of the issue of contaminated water in Iraq. Two members of our church have a son who was a soldier in Iraq and was told by those in charge that the water was safe to drink. He did, and has suffered major health problems since. I’m not sure when this happened, but next week I will try and get more info. One thing I remember his Mom saying when she was telling all of us about this, is that “You’ll hear more about this.” I do believe she said the water was from a river, but I don’t remember her giving the name. By the grace of his determination and support from his family and friends, this young man has been able to make a life for himself outside of the military. He takes many medications on a daily basis to keep himself alive, and works in a police department. He is unwilling to give up.

    IMHO
I understand why Ryan Neat was banned (because of the food fights he engaged with the trolls), but I miss his very informed comments I wish he would come back.
I am happy that wwallace is banned (because he is pointless and posts so many ad hominem attacks), but I don’t understand why he can continually pop up using different names. If Ryan Neat came back with a different name would he be able to post? And why is IRI allowed to remain? His posts are probably the meanest, vile comments I’ve read here, yet he is permitted.

There is a web site (answers.com) where you can find this sort of stuff out. It seems that FUBAR is a product of Nam, but some sources attribute it to WWII and a variation (FOOBAR) to Nam.

I, fo one, am one of those who misses RYAN’s insight into this thread?

The mere concept that you have a BLOG, with restrictions kinda defeats the purpose for the forum…I mean either you are a news outlet, or you will invite opinions from both sides…

Now, there should be minimal moderation of terms, and with that I agree. But, when someone initiates the diatribe, then there is enough to go around. I mean ANY writer for TP can be accused of name calling, if that were the case…

RYAN was a GREAT person and friend within this forum and even when we did not agree, you knew that his commenst were factual and on point…

Does TP want truth without controversy or does it want to control the opinions of those who may have hard edge comments to counter the lies of others?

    Keep BANGIN’ RYAN!!!

I am finally free of my service obligation and “if” there were more like you, then there would be people who are willing to forego politics and tell people how it really is…

Something is rotten in Washington and throughout the MSM

Very true. They are definately in bed together.
I can’t seem to get away from the questions:
Why isn’t there some dissent in the MSM?
Why do we have no real news?
There must be people out there with more money than God, who would have it in their best interest to develop some credible news channels, but no.

Off topic… I kind of miss Ryan’s slapping of the trolls.

  86. "wwallace" says:

This user was not banned for his comments on this thread, but for repeated violations of the Terms of Use. Specifically, personal attacks on other users.

Of course this is a lie. But it’s pretty ironic for Judd, who gets paid to attack other people, to object to that very practice.

Miss ya’ Ryan Neat. Your insight was appreciated daily by me and I learned a lot from you. Hell, it’s easy enough to skip posts when you see who they are coming from. I never felt sidetracked by your posts.

USA Patriot, formerly known as wwallace, has been banned from posting on this site. This user, however, continually switches IP addresses and email address to post to this site.

We need to cooperation of users on this site to enforce the ban. Stop engaging him. It’s impossible to moderate his comments if the entire thread is responding to his remarks.

    Thanks.

If you read between the lines, it seems Ryan’s opinion and presence was becoming too dominant here, and the excuse of baiting and arguing with the trolls was used to ban him. Right Punch, is Ryan turned down to 1( from 10), still good though.

Judd, I applaud you for trying to keep the discourse civil. As one who has been attacked for simply voicing a different opinion I appreciate the attempt.

    Comment by Concerned Conservative

Now that is just crap. And a good example of why your sincerity was questioned as often as it was defended by people here. You were never attacked like Ryan was. I will suggest that you are borderline, not quite as bad Mighty Aphrodite, and you never convinced me completely. Ryan did react to the attacks and that was unfortunate. I dare you to find one example where you were insulted in the fashion Ryan was, or sadly in the fashion he often responded to those little turds. It’s not an ad hominem attack to call a Ted Bundy a monster or wallace a Ruppert a turd.

    Tummy Water

    January 23, 2006

Halliburton made a new splash in the news over the same old infraction: Poisoning our troops in Iraq. In “Halliburton hit over troops’ exposure to tainted water” by Larry Margasak Halliburton is accused of exposing U.S. soldiers with contaminated water last July and had done its best not to inform the troops. Sen. Byron Dorgan, D-N.D., said the Democrats are pushing for an investigation since the Republicans had done their best to stonewall any oversights. Halliburton had time after time abused its trust and responsibilities in servicing the needs to our troops. But when will our military organizations in this country will rise up in ire to confront President Bush and Halliburton former CEO, Cheney, to the destructive and degrading treatment of our troops in Iraq? Worse, why allow Bush to speak in their organizations such as the VFW in Washington last Jan.12 when the Bush administration have allowed rotten food, refused to provide body armor, rip off of their health benefits, and then extending their tour of duty over and over of our troops? Will Bush take a sip of that Halliburton’s water? We know the answer to that, don’t we.

  94. Evil Spaniard says:

    A pair of things:

One, this problem comes from outsourcing military tasks to private corporatios, in plus without bidding and in plus one who is cozy with the VP. Privatizing everything doesn’t look too convenient here. Profit is profit, and purifying plants for water are expensive.

Two. Nobody in the thread has stopped in a simple thing: this water is the very same water almost every Iraqi in Baghdad drinks every day. Including children, and yes, including non born children in his mothers’ wombs. Maybe is most pure.
