“And yet we have brave men and women who are willing to step forward because they know what’s at stake. They’re willing to sacrifice their lives for this great country. What I am asking all of you tonight, is not to put on a uniform. Put on a bumper sticker. Is it that much to ask? Is it that much to ask to step up and serve your country, to fight for what we believe in.” Video here.
The “Bush” bumper stickers have disappeared from vehicles in Dallas. Every now and then you’ll see one on a construction worker’s truck.
January 25th, 2006 at 8:28 amPut a bumper sticker across his mouth.
January 25th, 2006 at 8:29 amActions speak louder than bumper stickers.
If you’re incapable of enlisting to ‘put your money where your mouth is’, the least you can do is give money to a worthwhile cause.
Buying a ‘I support the troops!’ bumper sticker that was made in China supports the US troops, how????
At the very least, donate to the USO. They need the money to help out our military. There are a multitude of organizations that actually provide assistance to our military.
If you’d rather, spend your time calling your congressmen/women and ask them to push for funding of protective armor for our military men & women and their vehicles.
You don’t have to support the war to support our military.
You don’t have to support the President to support our troops!
It’s not their fault that Pres. Bush sent them to a war for oil!
January 25th, 2006 at 8:37 amRick isn’t even referring to a SUPPORT THE TROOPS ribbon. He wants you to put HIS bumper sticker your car as a show of support for the troops. Reminds me of Rush’s “adopt a soldier” by giving him $49.99 to purchase a subscription of Rush mag to send to the troops.
January 25th, 2006 at 8:43 am#4 – I think the only ‘help’ a subscription to Rush Limbaugh would be to provide them with toilet paper if they run out.
Sen. Santorum is representative of what the currently elected Republican party stands for: lies, self-aggrandizing behavior, and maligning anyone who isn’t an imbiber of the kool-aid.
I wonder if we’re going to hear from any trolls today? Anyone want to stand up and support Sen. Santorum and his ’support the troops by buying my election bumper sticker?’ campaign? Anyone?
PS – I’m pretty sure his bumper stickers were made in China too!
January 25th, 2006 at 9:01 amI agree that Santorum is def promoting himself. He does seem to equivocate the term “serve” by comparing a “bumper sticker” version of serve for the country with a soldiers version of “serve”.
January 25th, 2006 at 9:01 amYeah, that’s a good idea, fight the evil doers and terrists with bumper stickers. Better yet, Lets send our guys over there with no plan of action and inadequate body armor and outdated tactics and vehicles….oh, we already did that. Hmm…bumper stickers..could save money…HEY! He could enlist and go fight the crusade, or better yet, all of the war hawks children could be sent to Eyeraq or Eyeran. Repent!
January 25th, 2006 at 9:01 amRemember, bumper stickers don’t kill terrorists, SUVs wearing bumper stickers kill terrorists. Oh wait. No they don’t. I must be thinking of something else.
January 25th, 2006 at 9:03 amThat Al Cracker basta*d looks young enough to serve in Iraq if you ask me…
Suit up “Sanitary Napkin”…
January 25th, 2006 at 9:07 amPerfect illustration of in-depth right wing critical thinking.
January 25th, 2006 at 9:09 amAnd he probably has a bible on his desk to show everyone he’s a christian, and a picture of his wife to show he’s a good husband.
Isn’t unabashed pro-government propaganda wonderful?
January 25th, 2006 at 9:17 amAh, Santorum, the pro-death penalty, pro-war Catholic who voted for Intelligent Design before he voted against it.
January 25th, 2006 at 9:22 amHey, at least little Chickenhawk Ricky isn’t asking his supporters to do something he isn’t willing to do himself.
January 25th, 2006 at 9:29 amLike most chicken-hawks here Ricky Sanitorium has equated supporting the troops with supporting what ever is their favorite cause, Ricky-boys just happens to be his re-election so he can return to his duties of being the GOP pointman for the K street project in the senate….wait,, ricky is a pointman, I mean that is a word that we used in the military. so in his mind he is serving, ” I’m not a pointman in the real military, but I play one in the senate” sounds like his next bumpersticker.
January 25th, 2006 at 9:40 amI heard this clip on The Majority Report last night ans was cracking up. I’m so happy I’ve found something in all this mess that I’ve been able to laugh at, because my spirits have really been crushed in the past few years. I’ve not been able to find much humor. But I DID laugh at this. A lot.
A gay who is a Republican, a chickenhawk who talks about the military like that… just priceless.
January 25th, 2006 at 9:53 amI will heed his call:
I am putting the following bumper sticker on my truck:
“Impeach Bush NOW!”
Damn, he’s right! I feel more patriotic already.
January 25th, 2006 at 9:59 amIt’s all good.
Sanitorum is almost a lock to get voted out of office this year. Let him whine now.
Hey Senator, would you like some cheese to go with that? No, no french stuff for you. For you we have Velveeta.
January 25th, 2006 at 10:02 amI have a “BUSH LIAR” bumper sticker.
I’m doing my part to help America!
January 25th, 2006 at 10:06 amI wonder if that teflon bumper sticker will adhere to his foreign made car. Just as well stick it on his ass.
January 25th, 2006 at 10:18 amDoes anyone know where I can get a Santorum bumper sticker?
I want one that says:
Vote Santorum for legalised man-dog love.
Or is this a different Santorum?
Z.
January 25th, 2006 at 10:37 am[...] Oh. My. God: “And yet we have brave men and women who are willing to step forward because they know what’s at stake. They’re willing to sacrifice their lives for this great country. What I am asking all of you tonight, is not to put on a uniform. Put on a bumper sticker. Is it that much to ask? Is it that much to ask to step up and serve your country, to fight for what we believe in.†Rick Santorum [...]
January 25th, 2006 at 10:42 amSomebody who knows how needs to put out a t-shirt with that exact quote so that anytime he has a rally or townhall meeting a whole bunch of good folks can show up and let Ricky we hear what he says.
January 25th, 2006 at 10:48 amGreat… Santorum and the rest of the Bush Republicans can win the bumper sticker war.
In the meantime, the report just below this one shows that are military forces are being stretched to the breaking point and it’ll take more than bumper stickers to hold them together and save lives.
Republicans kill our troops.
January 25th, 2006 at 10:50 amAbout 18 years ago I had a bumper sticker on my car that read, “Nuke a Gay Whale for Christ.” Oh, how I long to find another! Santorum is a stupid stupid person.
January 25th, 2006 at 11:17 amI still have a Kerry bumper sticker because I live in a super red state, and I don’t want anyone thinking I voted for Bush.
January 25th, 2006 at 11:19 amI took santorum’s advise sort of, I put my MY DAUGHTER SERVES IN THE U S ARMY bumper sticker right above my Disabled Veteran license plate. But I guess if I don’t buy one of his He’ll say I don’t support the troops properly
January 25th, 2006 at 11:22 amYeh Im gonna make a Bumber sticker that says
Chicken Congressman Speak Much Fight naught.
January 25th, 2006 at 11:31 amMr Santorum.
If we put a sticker on our cars, does that mean you wont be corrupt? Or that you will go to war? What good does a Sticker do Mr santorum? Does a Sticker provide those who have lost limbs, or their Lives for your Greenback War?
What does a STICKER do mr santorum?
Is this what we have Senators for? To Praise War, then not to fght in it? To send those to A WAR based on lies, then STICK a sticker on my car to Say I APPROVE of your WAR?
Surely you jest. For Any Man can see thru this Infantile, pathetic Charade.
January 25th, 2006 at 11:34 amYou mr santorum are not an American, you sir disgust me with your Dialectic of Brave Americans while you hide behind your ‘title’, while you vote to spy on Brave Americans they are fighting you WAR.
This war is THE BUSCHCO/THINKTANKS/CFR/CONGRESSES WAR.
Stop jacking your Jaws and get out there and defend your WAR mr Santorum.
January 25th, 2006 at 11:38 amBumper stickers. I made one myself that has one of those flagged W’s and the statement “Like a rock, only dumber”. Seems to get at those gene starved squinty eyed dead heads here in Florida. I also have the “Darn Good Liar” – but I purchased that one.
January 25th, 2006 at 11:39 amYou go to war with the bumper sticker you have, not the bumper sticker you wish you had, or might have later.
January 25th, 2006 at 11:51 amSantorum is a whack job. The more he yaps, the better. He has dug himself a nice hole. Geeeez what a nut.
January 25th, 2006 at 11:53 amIncredible. Santorum is one desperate politician. Show your support for the trooops by supporting my name on your car. This one is just laughable. Doesn’t he talk to anyone before he runs off at the mouth — doesn’t anyone tell him how stupid he is? Oh, wait, this is the Republican party. No one tells someone else he is a laughing stock, regardless of the apparent stupidity.
January 25th, 2006 at 1:19 pmOnly Republican sheeple would vote for this idiot.
It’s too late for Douglas Barber to put on a bumper sticker.
By his own admission Douglas Barber, a former army reservist, was struggling. For two years since returning from the chaos and violence of Iraq, the 35-year-old had battled with his memories and his demons, the things he had seen and the fear he had experienced. Recently, it seemed he had turned a corner, securing medical help and counselling.
But last week, at his home in south-eastern Alabama, the National Guardsman e-mailed some friends and then changed the message on his answering machine. His new message told callers: “If you’re looking for Doug, I’m checking out of this world. I’ll see you on the other side.” Mr Barber dialled the police, stepped on to the porch with his shotgun and – after a brief stand-off with officers – shot himself in the head. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

January 25th, 2006 at 1:32 pmSo, he is saying that republicans don’t need to fight in the military, just support it? So, this would be further proof that republicna s are chicken shits that won’t serve their country and just want to kill off the poor and democrats.
Republicans = Chicken Shits
Join the 102nd Fighting Bumper Sticker Brigade and fight along side the 101st Fighting Keyboard Commandos.
What a joke.
January 25th, 2006 at 1:34 pmBumper stickers? Why buy bumper stickers -they “could possibly damage the paint or finish on your vehicle”.
Better buy a magnet. That’s right. You can now support the troops (and possibly Santorum himself) but not damage the paint on your car. You don’t want to be that supportive.
And you thought bumper stickers were shallow display of support ::sigh::
January 25th, 2006 at 1:48 pmNo spudge, a real republican is figuring how to maximise profits based upon the new investment environment the change in the defense posture is going to cause in the defence industry as shown in the stock prices, I mean with all the time spent with his portfolio adviser, banker, and listening to CNBC, how can we all expect him to take time out of this unique investment opportunity and miss out on the bull market spending time in some location he has no intention of ever vacationing in, besides aren’t there some people who can’t afford to pay for college or find a minimum wage job so they would like a chance of earning a military wage.
January 25th, 2006 at 1:57 pm#30 – There’s a car running around my town where the guy took one of those W stickers and added letters so it reads “Widowmaker.” Clever…
January 25th, 2006 at 2:10 pm#34 – Holy shit, Don, that’s so sad. GWB will never be able to wash the blood from his hands.

Zookeeper,
Who cares about Bushiva?
May they haunt him (and all of his supporters and co-conspirators) ’til time ceases to exist…
It’s the parents, siblings, and significant others of ALL the war dead (Iraqi, Afghan, American and other) who deserve the pity…

January 25th, 2006 at 3:49 pmOn my old car I had a great bumper sticker, tried to get it off when I donated it but no go. It showed a man with a circle and line through. the quote said I still miss my x but my aim is improving.. Need to get a simaler one for Bull S*** Bush to go with the impeach Bush. The present one of yes I am a witch deal with it is lonely…..Blessings
January 25th, 2006 at 3:56 pm#40 – That wasn’t pity, big papa, it was disgust. I agree with the rest of your post.
January 25th, 2006 at 5:08 pmAnd I wonder, how many more Douglas Barbers are there out there right now.
As a military vet with many friends that are vets, I feel really bad for these patriots. These guys and gals signed up to defend our country and instead are being used as cannon fodder.
I will admit that I did not see half of what the troops are seeing in this “war.” Operation Desert Storm was nothing compared to this thing we are tied up in. Don’t get me wrong, war is hell and I do not demean anybody from Desert Storm. What I do mean is that this “war” is much worse. I seriously feel ill at what our people are going through. We need to protect our soldiers, from here as much as they will protect us when we need them. But, this Iraq thing is not going well and needs to end.
How many of our troops are going to come back with missing arms and legs? How many will have serious mental issues? How many will have depression to such a degree that they do not want to live with their memories, like Douglas Barber?
January 25th, 2006 at 7:58 pmGosh, that is SO tragic! The poor bastige has clearly lost his already tenuous hold on reality. Sigh. Well I can’t say I’m surprised. His constant changes to try to be whatever he thought people wanted him to be, just got to be too much. Ah well. No great loss, to either party. But my personal favorite bumper sticker reads, “Jesus is coming, look busy!” It still slays me!!
January 25th, 2006 at 11:07 pmhow about some armour plated bumper stickers for those humvees?
January 26th, 2006 at 1:43 amcredit counselling
I found your post comments while searching Google. Very relevant especially as this is not an issue which a lot of peaople are conversant with.
