Under President Bush, right-wing fundamentalist Pat Robertson’s international “charity” Operation Blessing has increased its annual revenue from government grants from $108,000 to $14.4 million.

Operation Blessing, with a budget of $190 million, is an integral part of the Robertson empire. Not only is he the chairman of the board, his wife is listed on its latest financial report as its vice president, and one of his sons is on the board of directors.
Back in 1994, during the infamous Rwandan genocide, Robertson used his 700 Club’s daily cable operation to appeal to the American public for donations to fly humanitarian supplies into Zaire to save the Rwandan refugees.
The planes purchased by Operation Blessing did a lot more than ferry relief supplies.
An investigation conducted by the Virginia attorney general’s office concluded in 1999 that the planes were mostly used to transport mining equipment for a diamond operation run by a for-profit company called African Development Corp.

The radical fundies that want to turn America into a Theocracy should look at their history and any current nation that is under the control of religion before they continue their jihad.
When Government and religion get into the same vehicle, it is blinded by hubris and their inability to see their mistakes, and eventually goes out of control.

The Pharisees spun capitalistic profits from their religious order back in Biblical times and Jesus rebuked them. I’d really like to get my hands on Robertson’s books…see if his association is TYCOING the evangelical right at all — then create a plethora of negative publicity rebuking Robertson’s association!

Pat Robertson is a hypocritical prevaricator who shrouds his commercial interests with pseudo-Christian rhetoric that should only fool the very gullible and naive.
Christ is a good business and it allows the likes of Robertson to make a handsome living, even if they have to associate themselves with shady characters and international pariahs.
For instance, Robertson’s financial ties to Liberia’s strongman Charles Taylor were amply reported as were his ties to Zaire’s (Congo) Mobutu Sese Seko who openly supported the genocide of Tutsis in Rwanda in 1994.
[Pat] Robertson, through Freedom Gold Limited, an offshore company registered in the Cayman Islands but based at CBN headquarters in Virginia Beach, signed an agreement with Taylor and key cabinet members allowing the for-profit Freedom Gold to explore and receive mining rights in southeastern Liberia, where gold is believed to be in the ground.

Before Taylor, Robertson was in cahoots with the late brutal and rapacious dictator of Zaire, Mobutu Sese Seko, alias the “President of Kleptocracy.” Mobutu gave Robertson’s privately formed African Development Co. concessions to hunt for diamonds and gold in Zaire in the ’90s. That venture, alas, went bust.

This small insight into Robertson’s commercial interests, helps when reading his defence of Charles Taylor, whom he calls a “fellow Christian”:
Religious broadcaster Pat Robertson accused President Bush of “undermining a Christian, Baptist president to bring in Muslim rebels” by asking Liberian President Charles Taylor, recently indicted for war crimes, to step down.

That knowledge also helps understand Robertson’s motivations behind his calls for donations and other help:
In 1994 [Robertson] made an emotional plea on The 700 Club for cash donations to Operation Blessing to support airlifts of refugees from the Rwandan civil war to Zaire (now Congo). Reporter Bill Sizemore of The Virginian Pilot later discovered that Operation Blessing’s planes were transporting diamond-mining equipment for the African Development Corporation, a Robertson-owned venture initiated with the cooperation of Zaire’s then-dictator Mobutu Sese Seko.

As a final note, Taylor is currently living in exile in Nigeria. He has been indicted and is wanted for crimes against humanity and war crimes:
Charles Taylor is alleged to have provided active support for the armed opposition Revolutionary United Front (RUF) during Sierra Leone’s conflict, which was characterized by some of the worst human rights abuses ever known.
These included widespread deliberate and arbitrary killings of civilians, torture, including rape and deliberate amputation of limbs, and abduction and forced recruitment of large numbers of people, including children, many of whom were forced to fight. (Emphasis added)

They see all that money and forget about spreading God’s love and good deeds. Instead they spew hate, fear, and anger and damn people for not thinking as they do. True Christians do not behave this way.
