50,000.

Number of soldiers the U.S. Army has forced to continue serving after their voluntary stints ended under a policy called “stop-loss,” Reuters reports.

  1. SpudgeBoy says:

Where are the right wingers preeching about how all the troops want to be there and that they all volunteered specifically to fight in Iraq.

    Wrong!

They are being kept there against the own free will.

    Yea! 50,000 more democrats.

  2. Punchy says:

I smell 50K pissed off soldiers. Not good for the long-term morale of the Army, eh? Of course, between the environment, deficiet, and now security, it’s clear this Admin doesn’t give a shit about anything more than 3 days into the future….

  3. Gus, Cross Country OBGYN Lover says:

If you were paying attention today you heard Frist blame part of the spending problem on recruitment(he said it under his breathe all mumbly-like).

This is part of the GOP Contract With America – the part not worth a Tinker’s dam, as are all other parts of that policy.

  6. SpudgeBoy says:

50,000 is more than 1/3 of the total troops in Iraq. That would be one out of every three troops there being held against their will.

Yeah, it is the liberals saying the war is illegal that is causing the low troop morale. Uh huh. I ain’t buying it.

  7. WaltTheMan says:

    unbelievable,
I would suggest that you ask that your recent post be removed. It is illegal to threaten the three people you reference with physical harm.

  8. Deleted says:

  9. Gary Ruppert says:

So, do you think Bob Woodruff will learn anything from the attack on him today?

I would imagine that the media got a big wakeup call about how they report this war. In other words, they’re going to have to realize that they have emboldened the enemy with their inaccurate reporting and they need to get on the side of America and the side of the truth when it comes to the War in Iraq.

  10. Jack says:

Walt, the cat is already out of the bag. Deleting the comment will not change the fact it was already made.

  12. WaltTheMan says:

    Gary,
If the press told the full story, the peasants whould be storming Washington, DC with pitchforks.

  13. Jack says:

SpuidgBoy, making threats like that over the Internet is a federal crime. So much for your respect for the rule of law.

  14. Gary Ruppert says:

if the press actually reported the accomplishments in Iraq, such as making their nation more free than ever, and holding election after election, then the people would be behind the war, not against it.

Instead, the Media has insisted for 2 years/10 months that the war was a quagmire.

This reporting has inspired the terrorist attacks on American troops and Iraq.

  15. SpudgeBoy says:

    Walt,

unbelievable only said “point their guns” he didn’t say fire on them. The assholes in the White House should just go peacefully as they have never had any serious training. Tails between legs, duck walk.

    Quack!

  16. SpudgeBoy says:

if the press actually reported the accomplishments in Iraq, such as making their nation more free than ever

OMG, I almost choked on that one. You should be a comedian Gary. You come up with some funny shit.

Is Iraq better off now than it was in 2002?

  19. WaltTheMan says:

    Gary,
The use of the term “quagmire” is only meant to brighten the picture. It is actually an unmitigated disaster.

  20. Krazny says:

Gary conveniently glosses over the “our troops will be home in six months comments, and every other lie told by the administration about the war in Iraq.

  21. SpudgeBoy says:

Is Iraq better off now than it was in 2002?

    No.

  22. SpudgeBoy says:

Is Iraq better off now than it was in 2002?

I don’t think I would consider civil war a better position for any country to be in.

  23. Jack says:

SpudgeBoy, “It still doesn’t change the fact that you are a pussy that has never served.”

Prove it. And you can alos explain in detail how it’s legal to threaten to “point a gun” at people in the White House, as unbelievable suggested. HAHA

  24. Marie says:

    Fifty thousand!
That’s a lot of p/o’ed soldiers and families.

  25. unbelievable says:

Walt, What Spudge said… “Pointing arms” is not a crime. Well, yet.

  26. Marie says:

Do Gary Ruppert’s posts make sense to anyone here?

  28. Gary Ruppert says:

The use of the term “quagmire” is only meant to brighten the picture. It is actually an unmitigated disaster.

We defeated Saddam’s army in under a month, and we are smothering the terrorists fighting us in Iraq. We’ve also held three elections.

    Some quagmire.

Gary conveniently glosses over the “our troops will be home in six months comments, and every other lie told by the administration about the war in Iraq.

  29. unbelievable says:

    Spudge, by the way, I’m a she… :)

  30. SpudgeBoy says:

    Prove it.

Because you support keeping our troops in harms way. Anybody that has served would never ask their comrades to die for no reason.

    Doh!

  33. unbelievable says:

Gary, just replace Giacomo’s name with your own, and read…

    Giacomo:
Thank you for providing such a visable example of the clear and present danger faced by America today. You perfectly represent all the brainwashed believers supporting this group of madmen and their napolean wannabe who have engineered another chapter of death, destruction, and tyranny upon world history.

We sit at our computers watching you parrot the myths and lies of the Bushivek ministers of propaganda as if they are unquestionable facts known by you. You speak of our military and war as if you have direct knowledge when the reality is that you have never served in any capacity, much less seen combat. You attribute all motivations and/or actions to good or evil, right or wrong, as though there could be nothing else. That’s a sure nuff giveaway of the religion indoctrinated mentality. Anything we do is good because we are Christian. You won’t admit it, even to yourself, but it leaps off the screen to an open mind.

We who have been there and done that smile inside everytime one of you armchair patriots calls us a hero. I will admit a real moment of pride for the recognition shown to me the day the hung the Navy Cross around my neck, but no one who has survived a war feels like a hero. He’s just damn glad it’s over and he’s alive. And, hell no, he doesn’t want to talk about it. He wants to forget it. He doesn’t want to attempt to tell you what it was like to hold his buddy in his arms, promising to deliver his last words to his wife and kids or his mom, watch the life go out of his eyes, and then go find all the pieces of him so his family will have a whole husband or son to bury. A soldier or a sailor never feels heroic, he just feels scared going in and thankful coming out. There’s nothing heroic about killing and dying.

I haven’t heard anyone call our troops murderers in this war because those opposed to this one know the military is not responsible for what they have been ordered to do. The Iraq invasion and occupation is not being conducted by the military. Cheney and Rumsfeld are in charge of all planning and operations. Bush doesn’t know what is going on there. All he knows is what those two incompetent chicken hawks tell him. I know a lot of guys over there, many I trained. We talk every week. Also, I talk to those coming home on rotation at the base. Here are the facts:

The best estimate of the number of Iraqis killed since we invaded is 150,000 to 180,000. The vast majority of those deaths were noncombatants including children. We have and continue to deliberately target and destroy/kill civilians in order to “get” insurgents among them.

The number of ouside “terrorists” in Iraq is about 2%. The only war there is a civil war between the sunnis and the shiites with us backing the shiites.

There are over 100 attacks and/or bombings every single day upon Our soldiers and civilians.

The infastructure is not being rebuilt. Electricity is available no more than 8 hours a day in the best areas and none in some. The water is not fit to drink, sewers inoperable. Hospitals have almost no basic supplies and the schools are empty for the most part. Few businesses can operate out of fear of attack. People stay home and only go out for necessities.

Billions of dollars delivered for rebuilding have disappeared and there is no investigation. The Iraqi oil that was supposed to pay for rebuilding is flowing less than half of what it was before the invasion.

Our military is not in control of the country and the few Iraqi police and military that have been “trained” are simply thugs getting even and settling old scores.

Iran is pouring money and sending assasin squads to assist the hard core shiite religous leaders coming into power. When we leave, Iraq and Iran will be partners aligned against us and the sunnis will be purged.

That is the real result and conditions after more than three years.

The most amazing part of the true believer mentality is the manner in which they have justified Bush’s war crime of invading a soverign nation that was no threat to us and, in fact, never threatened us. They simply ignore the fact that Bush and company deliberately mislead the nation into authorizing the invasion, with “Oh well, Sadam was evil, so we did a good thing and the Iraqi’s are better off now.”

Under Sadam, Iraq was the most progressive arab nation, affording more rights and freedoms to women than any other. He had the best medical facilities and schools in the middle east. He was a secularist who denied religious rule, fought against Iran’s attempts to install a dominant shiite religion in his country, and would not allow or aid terrorist organizations. He was an asshole who ruled with an iron fist but primarily because of circumstance. Look what we have now that we have “saved” the country.

And, where the hell is the guy responsible for 9/11? On the few ocassions anyone has asked, Bush say “ben hiden.” He once told us he didn’t think about him anymore. Doesn’t that bother you people? Can’t you see that Bush doesn’t want to catch him? He needs the boogey man out there to maintain the fear.

I loved your take on Afghanistan and the “oil” they have. What oil? They have the path for the natural gas pipeline Haliburton is building to the sea. Afghanistan’s industry is poppy! Our troops have been ordered to look the other way and allow the poppy fields to flourish openly. No democracy has been established there. The warlords who have always been in power have been elected or appointed.

All of my information comes from the boots on the ground. Many I have known for years. Where does your’s come from?

  34. SpudgeBoy says:

No we didn’t, we disbanded his army, who are now insurgents. You really are stupid.

And it is not knowable if force will be used, but if it is to be used, it is not knowable how long that conflict would last. It could last, you know, six days, six weeks. I doubt six months. -Donald Rumsfeld

    Another pearl of wisdom.

There’s no civil war in Iraq, there’s just some terrorists rebelling.

Terrrorists don’t rebel, insurgents do. Retard.

  35. Jack says:

“Pointing arms” is not a crime.

Yeah, right. Try it and see what happens.

SpudgeBoy, are you saying no veterans or active duty military support the action to liberate Iraq? HAHAHAHAHA You’re very funny.

  36. SpudgeBoy says:

    Nope, not anymore.

And once again, typing Hah ah ah aha ha after you posts makes you sound like a pyscho.

  37. Gary Ruppert says:

No we didn’t, we disbanded his army, who are now insurgents. You really are stupid.

We made it to Baghdad in a month.

As for the former members of Saddam’s army, some of them are in the terrorist gangs.

But, we rolled over them in a month anyways. No matter what you wanna claim in your anti-America hysteria.

Here, read it for yourself. Or will your partisan brain keep you from clicking.

He didn’t claim that “our troops will be home in six months”, he just said that we could end the conflict in less than six months. And that actually happened. But, a newer conflict with the terrorists we’re fighting in the War on Terror started soon afterwards.

Terrrorists don’t rebel, insurgents do. Retard.

The people blowing up innocents in Iraq are not insurgents, they are terrorists who are rebelling against their new government.

  38. SpudgeBoy says:

All I can say is wow, you are really out there. You don’t even know what the proper terms are for what is going on, so I am done with you.

  39. Gary Ruppert says:

Proper terms in your POV are the leftist buzzwords.

  40. Jack says:

Spudgeboy, none? Not a single veteran or active duty member of the military supports the action in Iraq now? Is that your assertion here today? Because it’s such an obviously nutty statement.

  41. WaltTheMan says:

    Gary said -
So, being in a nation with no freedom of speech and no elected representatives is better than being in a nation with freedom of speech and democracy?

Gary, that’s the problem. America has become a nation with no freedom of speech and no elected representatives. With W ignoring Congress and federal laws plus having stolen the elections of 2000 and 2004, the United States has ceased to exist.

Iraq is not a nation as well – the Sunnis, Shiites and Kurds are at odds and civil war is rampart there.
    It’s still an unmitigated disaster.

He’ll probably, in typical liberal fashion, just continue the name-calling instead of even trying to back it up. Watch…

  50. SpudgeBoy says:

Besides, this thread is about 50,000 soldiers who have been converted to Democrats by the fact that the Army can’t get any new recruits because NOBODY but stupid zombie republicans support this war.

I used to take that position, Jack. Until one day I realized there are really only about 3 people who come here and disrupt things. And they usually lie in the process. I stopped coming here because I felt that OTHER people were staying away for the same reason.

And while the “trolls” usually come on softly with cogent ideas it typically and quickly deteriorates. Then a thread winds up being a discussion between 2 people. Then I go to Kos where trolls usually don’t last long anyway.

    Better Dead than Red…state,

Judd runs the site. There have only bee twon people ever banned from this site ever, unlike the red sites who ban people all the time.

If you were a regular here, you can tell who has what writing style. Jacks insessent use of “Haha ha aha ha” at the end of his post is just like old wwallace.

Since Ryna Neat hasn’t posted, but once since he was banned months ago, only wwallace would know who the other one was.

You are free to play with the trolls, but it never goes anywhere. I use it for stress relief and a good comic relief.

This is what I think of everytime:
    null

  99. Jack says:

GSD, I was clearly talking about this site, not the nation. Are you saying this site is not run by and mostly inhabited by people on the left?

  100. Jack says:

Spudgeboy, “only wwallace would know who the other one was.”

Then how exactly do YOU know???

  101. unbelievable says:

Wasn’t wallace the troll that got banned because he was so psychotic?

Yep. And clearly, still is. You can tell his posts by their terse and ignorant remarks meant to disrupt from the thread. When confronted he becomes defensive. If you’re ever suspicious, just ask and he’ll out himself. He likes teh attention. Comes from working with teenagers all day :)

Wow, thanks for the heads up. I knew his brain was in partisan mode, but apparently wallace to it to a whole new level of just psychotic ramblings. There’s the partisan brain, and then there’s the BTKiller partisan. Did you know that the BTK Killer in Kansas was a republican politician?

    No I didn’t, but am not surprised…

He apparently attacked people viciously as a hardcore partisan as well. I wonder what it is with these hardcore partisans and their attraction to the unstable. Maybe it’s the permission to say any silly thing in the world and get a pat on the back by another silly partisan? It must be.

I think so. Look at our Presi-don’t… always trying to get approval no matter what the consequences. And he’s a pretty typical Repug, wouldn’t you say?

Thanks for the heads up – and I loved what you wrote to giacomo last night. Very well said.

    Comment by RightPunch — January 29, 2006 @ 2:14 pm

Thanks! You had some astute things to point out to him as well. Giacomo and I have a bit of a history of butting heads. He doesn’t know what he’s talking about, as I’m sure you’ve noticed. But he’s probably a pretty nice guy in reality. I get the feeling he’s here because he has questions about some things he believes, but is afraid to say them aloud…

  102. SpudgeBoy says:

BECAUSE I AM A REGULAR POSTER HERE YOU FVCKING RETARD.

  103. Jack says:

Spudgeboy, so then when you said, “only wwallace would know who the other one was” that wasn’t true, was it? Thanks for clarifying. You are soooo funny!

  104. Granite State Destroyer says:

When you realize how lightweight the winger trolls are they are a hoot.

They are paper tigers, like Limbaugh. Fat, lonely men, with little else to reign over but their mouse and keyboard.

They talk of “crushing” and “destroying” all the time. But we know how emasculated, flaccid and intellectually weak they are. Unless they have Rush Limbaugh to give his stamp of approval, they can’t stand firm to an opinion. I remember when Harriet Miers was nominated, one of the winger trolls had this repulsive comment: “Let’s wait until we hear what Rush has to say tomorrow, before we come down with an opinion on Miers.”….How, ah, independant and free thinking.

They even have Alito. Soft and so technocratic, a good soldier without a set of balls. He can’t even stand up and proudly say: “I will vote doen Roe vs. Wade. Nope, he has to be a flaccid, vacillating, wishy, washy, elite. Nope, no strong convictions.

Todays Republican Party, All power, no principles.

Don’t most vegans not eat meat because they don’t believe in killing anything or anyone. Do they suddenly expect these folks to jump from Vegan to cannibal? It’s just silly partisan nonsense to even consider these people a threat in any way other than political.

    Comment by RightPunch — January 29, 2006 @ 2:23 pm

Not only do we not eat meat because most of us find killing conscious life to eat unnecessary, but we do not use animal products including dairy (they keep cows pregnant and milk them until their udders become calloused and painful), eggs (they de-beak the birds, force them into cramped cages and starve them to produce more eggs), honey (it stressed the bees to be farmed), or use products like silk and leather.

For me, the no animal products part is mostly about not leaving footprints on the environment because of the horrific way we treat food animals. I have a low tolerance to abuse of any living creature.

So, as a result, I am a pacifist. Definitely funny to target people like me, huh?

  108. Granite State Destroyer says:

Anyone that thinks Vegans or Quakers are a threat have a partisan screw loose.

    Comment by RightPunch — January 29, 2006

The “threat” the Quakers pose, via Truth Project, is to try to counteract armed forces recruitment propaganda. They talk to high school students, and offer viable alternatives to enlisting. For the first time since 1999, recruitment quotas have not been met. So I guess it is their fault after all. They should have left the students in the dark like mushrooms, rather than try to get them to think for themselves.

  110. SpudgeBoy says:

More important than arguing with an idiot.

We get 50,000 more Democratic votes thanks to Bush’s bad policies!

I hope Bush and frineds continue. They are only helping us.

The OC Register, a right wing paper here in SoCal did a big expose on Bush’s lies this morning. They talked about how Bush plans to talk about what a great job he is doing in his SoTU speech and debunked all of them. It is nice to see the right eating their own.

  111. Granite State Destroyer says:

    #118.

Bullies always go after the weakest first. Why do you think Bush went to Iraq. They had no teeth, so to speak. Now that he is faced with North Korea and Iran, suddenly he aint so eager to face them down.

I say they try something with Syria.

Also, why Bush/Rove would target Quakers and other peace loving folks. Make them the example and the “milita” dudes might think twice.

Once an ass-branding, drunk and brash bully, always a bully.

Don’t worry Unbelievable, we are all in it together. We will stand by you vegans and Quakers and pacifists, or we will all hang together.

    and then you said:
Don, it’s un-American to compare the liberation of Iraq from a dictator to an invasion of the United States. You are no patriot, that’s for sure.

    Comment by Granite State Destroyer — January 29, 2006 @ 2:51 pm

Thanks GSD, this is partly why I became a liberal – there’s real loyalty and inclusion among Progressives.

I was in this quaint hostel in Ballycastle on a Saturday night (a friend and I were backpacking across Europe and had started in London). There were people from all walks of life and all over the world, and in the worn den, where a small fire blazed in the hearth, an international group had assembled with a variety of musical instruments and played and sang both Irish folk songs and American rock and roll. No judgment, no anger, nothing even remotely close. Just laughter and song and community. I’ll never forget that feeling of belonging.

And the next day, before we left, I had the opportunity to talk with a Catholic man who’d grown up in Belfast amid the violence, yet was a peaceful and liberal man untouched by the venom of the conflict.

That was probably the beginning of the end of my days as a conservative (how I’d been raised).

Reid’s run circles around Frist on several occasions and I think he’s gonna get embarassed again early this week. Can’t wait.

    marie + katy,

He and Susan had that documentary they were working on. Maybe that’s taking all of their free time?

Only thing I could think of…

  131. SpudgeBoy says:

    TJM,

No matter how you do the math, that is 50,000 pissed off people.

As has been stated since the dawn of time, war is hell. You see shit that changes you forever. The smell, the taste, the images. It is not something that should be forced on people, ever. Yes, throughout history, there have been groupes that seem to relish in war, but for the average person these days, it is not a good thing.

To force somebody, who joined the National Guard to make some extra money or to pay for college, to continue to stay in hell in not agood thing.

I wish these right wingers would join the military, so they could see first hand the horrors of war. Saving Private Ryan has nothing on the real thing. War is much worse than any movie can ever portray. There is a stench of gun powder and rotting corpses. There is mass chaos. The soldiers go through a sense of wondering if they will survive through the next patrol.

To make somebody stay longer than they agreed to, by signing a contract, is breach of contract. It is too bad that it is the military. They can’t be sued by these troops that have been used like pawns by our government.

And I do mean our entire government. Democrats and Republicans. They should be ashamed of themselves for not asking the hard questions about the falty intellengence that has cost the lives of over 2,200 troops, for nothing.

Nothing, not a damn thing. There is a civil war going on over in Iraq, where a theocracy was just democratically voted in by the people. Same goes for Palestine. They just voted a theocratic terrorist organization into power.

I am sorry about the long rant, but I feel terrible about how Bush abuses our troops. Anybody that doesn’t have a heart for what our troops are going through on a daily basis in Iraq has no heart at all. They are empty husks of a buddy that lack the tiniest fraction of empathy for their fellow Americans.

Our Army should be used as an absolute last resort, not to start an elective and pre-emptive war. This is America, we are better than that.

This thread has gotten a little too heated. Several comments violate our terms of service and had to be deleted. I’ve determined that “Jack” is a user who has been banned from the site and will make an effort to block future posts from that user.

People who want to disrupt things, however, frequently reappear with different names. The only way we can prevent them from doing so is not to let anyone bait you into a flame war.

It’s fine to respond, but do so with facts not insults. Once you’ve made your point, just move on. When you don’t, they win.

  133. SpudgeBoy says:

    Ha, knew it.

Sorry Judd. I keep trying to bring it back, but sheeeesh, these guys are whacky dee.

  134. Jay says:

Judd, can’t you just block the i.p?

Also, the ladies at Firedoglake are ALL OVER the Alito issue and that entire community is hammering away at their Senators with faxes, letters, emails and even telegrams. Perhaps you guys should consider calling your readers to action as susataining a filibuster (even if it’s only short-term) is a very viable goal here.

  136. SpudgeBoy says:

I would have to agree, with you Jay. The only time I ever eat Dominoes is when my company orders it for a departmental lunch or something like that. You are correct, Dominoes pizza sucks.

  137. WaltTheMan says:

I suggest that anon boycott the atmosphere in order to avoid polution (Like its post.) Didn’t that very post appear and disappear on this very thread?

  138. anon says:

151 and 152 the point: Call them and make the demand that the CEO stop the confirmation of Alito or you will not buy from them. I know you don’t like the pizza and that you don’t buy from them but If thousands of people call him just like many stupid conservatives called CBS years ago to get the Reagan movie off CBS, he will have no choice but to call Frist and stop the confirmation. No CEO wants to lose half of his customer base.

“Demands without boycotts will most likely fail” Mighty Maximus 2006.

  139. TJM says:

Monaghan, the Chairman of Domino’s founded the Thomas More Law Center which represented the school board in the Dover Pa. lawsuit. I haven’t bought a Domino’s pizza since he started that law center.Of course the pizza isn’t that good anyway,but…..

    Comment by Jack — January 29, 2006 @ 1:17 pm

Once again JACK you forget that Bush called IRAQ Soverign?
Let Freedom Reign Georgie wrote wrongly at the Time.
Hack Jack if I go look at the Executive Orders Signed by Bush, I find that EVEN after IRA was Soverign, Old Georgie made it so hes still The Power in Charge, though he has delegated much of that Authority to others, Bush is Like Commander In Chief, but on Permanent Vavcation.
Anyhow, the thing here is though Bush called them Soverign they are NOT, Ergo they are not ‘Liberated’

  146. Marie says:

    Jay and Spudge,
I have always disliked Domino’s Pizza, then when I read about the owner, I dislike it even more.

  147. unbelievable says:

Oh dear god… Wait, I don’t believe in gods… old sayings die hard…

    I wasn’t threatening anyone. I’m a pacifist.

My point was that our government trained al Qaeda to use violence (point guns) in the face of conflict and look what happened when they felt threathened by our government. Our government trained Timothy McVeigh to use violence in the face of conflict, and look what happened when he felt threathened by our government. Our Government trained our troops to use violence in the face of conflict, so what are they expecting to happen when these guys feel threatened too? Daisies and tulips?

The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over while expecting different results. I was just trying to point that out and a bunch of fear was mongered.

So let it be said. I don’t condone shooting them, but I do condone impeachment, conviction and some serious jail time.

  148. unbelievable says:

Somehow I doubt they make sense to Anyone, even those that know Gary.

Yes I was thinking the same thing, there are less trolls here than it appears. Same one different name.

  150. Lily says:

Ok, I just tried to post a link to email that pizza place, and I got a spam warning….

  151. SpudgeBoy says:

Hilferty said there are about 12,500 soldiers in the regular Army, as well as the part-time National Guard and Reserve, currently serving involuntarily under the policy, and that about 50,000 have had their service extended since the program began in 2002.

So currently the US military is holding 12,500 American citizens against their will.

Can you say back door-draft? I knew you could.

  152. Jack says:

Steve Forbes is saying there has been a record re-enlistment rate in all branches.

Is this true? Or is someone playing fast with semantics… like, some call it “re-enlistment” other call it “stop loss”.

  153. Clif says:

Spudge some of the 12,500 soldiers include individuals already “chaptered out of the army” for reasons that are defined by the military as “unfit for military service.” The military suspends the chapter for the duration of the deployment only to reinstate the chapter when the soldier returns, basically they’re telling these soldiers that they are good enough to fill a foxhole but not to serve stateside when their units no longer need their body to fill an MTOE line in the unit roster for deployment. Same thing happened during Desert Storm.

  154. Eargy Earp says:

Sure there’s a record re-enlistement rate. A record low, no doubt.
Anyway, Forbes is no expert on military anything.

The question that any sensible person should be asking is: what is wrong such that the US needs to use stop loss. Answer: it is a cheap way of avoiding political suicide of ordering a draft for an over-taxed military.
