Don’t call it a comeback.

An ABC News/Washington Post poll shows Bush’s approval at 42%, down from 46% earlier in the month. Disapproval is at 56%. Meanwhile, a Time poll finds 41% approval, 55% disapproval. (Via Hotline)

Let’s see what sort of bump or dip comes after the SOTU.

  2. Marie says:

Sure, he will get a bump after the SOTU speech, but nothing makes any difference does it? Even if his popularity goes into single digits, what will change in government? His minions and toadies will circle the wagons, protect their leader, deny the truth, fend off opposition, and the media will enjoy covering the fight that will last three years. The media will hold the Democrats accountable and demand to know what they intend to do even as they have no majority in the congress. They will be portrayed as abetting our global enemies by calling attention to the weakened presidency.

  3. Gerald Gibson says:

I thought he was at 36% not too long ago.

Some days I feel like just taking my wifes advice and just packing up my family and leaving. If it wasnt for the American revolution, the civil war, WWII, and civil rights I would. But America still has hope in it somewhere…I hope.

  4. Hardy Haberman says:

Let’s see. Wonder what King George will say in his speech?

    Something like this:

    “Booga booga booga!” “9/11, 9/11, 9/11″
“Victory in Iraq.” “booga, booga, booga! Bird flu!”

    “9/11, 9/11!”

    “Homeland security!” “Ditractors-bad. Republican Zombies-good!”

    “God Bless America”

Well that about sums it up. More fear, and more of the same lies. I suggest going to a window and shouting at the top of your lungs, “I’m mad as hell and I am not going to take it anymore”.

With our journalists in their pocket, they will never be taken down through our justice system.
There is no debate about the legitimacy or legality of this administration.
I for one, have had it up to my eyeballs with their fake news covering their asses.
I say if diebold hands them the midterms, their time is up.
The time to begin organizing is now, so come november, we’re ready.

  7. Adam says:

When you get down into the 30’s on approval, 42% becomes something for these turkeys to brag about. What a mandate…

  8. Clif says:

Hardy Haberman you left out We gave alot of poor peoples money to the Pharasuitical industry with medicare part D so thjis time I want to help the HMO’s take more of their monet through medical savings accounts instead of actual reform of the industry that is breaking the back of this country economically. This year, both Groundhog Day and the State of the Union Address fall on the same day.

It is an ironic juxtaposition: one involves a meaningless ritual in which we look to a creature of little intelligence for prognostication; and the other involves a groundhog.

  10. Gerald Gibson says:

Holy crap! The democrats are starting to see the light! Though the sad part is that it was just some joe in the crowd that had to bring it up. And after a little wishwashing around the democrat said… we sound like we are being wussies here … REVELATION! YOU JUST FREAKIN NOW ARE GETTING THAT??? The repubs have been calling you wussies for YEARS!

  11. RunningDogLackey says:

Just remember — this is a President who must spectacularly outperform even the most optimistic expectations just to get to 42%.

If Dubya doesn’t get his tongue stuck to a frozen flagpole, he is judged a genius.

  12. Don says:

Gerald, I question if the Democrats are “starting to see the light.” “I don’t think that’s dodging,” Emanuel said. “My interest is not to play politics or say how we can make politics out of national security.

Have we heard a Dem stand up and say: “Bill Clinton had the World Trade Center bombing perps within two weeks in 1993 but George Bush has said that catching Osama bin Laden is not a top priority–so the Democrats are strong on national security while the Republicans are bleeding our country dry in Iraq.”

  13. Gerald Gibson says:

#12 I didnt say they could see yet….just a ray of light. If they follow it THEN they can do what needs to be done.

lets start the PRE SOTUS WAVE!!
    http://www.counterpunch.org/gardner01292006.html
Republican strategist Grover Norquist has been taking steps to launch a group opposed to drug prohibition -ostensibly on libertarian principles, but actually because there are millions of votes to be had and dollars to be raised. Norquist runs Americans for Tax Reform, a Washington, D.C., resource center for politicians and lobbyists opposed to government spending (except on behalf of corporations). He has been directly involved in many of the most pernicious projects of our time -installing the Mujahadeen in Afganistan and the Contras in Nicaragua, drafting and securing the passage of Newt Gingrich’s Contract on America, working relentlessly to privatize social security and state pension plans and Medicare and public schools… Norquist’s ATR is consistently and fiercely anti-immigrant, anti-union, anti-environmental-regulation. Norquist is the prime mover behind the “the K Street Project” -an attempt to purge Washington of lobbyists with Democratic Party ties. The exposure of Jack Abramoff’s criminality may have slowed him somewhat (Norquist of Harvard and Abramoff of Brandeis have been allies since 1980, when they helped carry Massachusetts for Reagan), but he remains as powerful as his friend Karl Rove, a zealous ideologue with a bent for practical politics.

  15. Gerald Gibson says:

#12 Maybe that is the point. We are bitching at the wrong people. Maybe we need to start hounding the democrats and NOT be nice about it. Maybe WE need to start calling them wussies also so they get the point that it isnt just a republican talking point. THEY ARE BEING WUSSIES.

They had no idea. Goldsmith was actually the opposite of what his detractors imagined. For nine months, from October 2003 to June 2004, he had been the central figure in a secret but intense rebellion of a small coterie of Bush administration lawyers. Their insurrection, described to NEWSWEEK by current and former administration officials who did not wish to be identified discussing confidential deliberations, is one of the most significant and intriguing untold stories of the war on terror.(Interesting Take.)

aye, ye forgit mateys, for ye have climbed much farther than ye average joe media watchers, into HR reports, et etc, if you be followin the links posted by many,
aye they be coming around to their senses, word of mouth is slower than media, but its FREE and surely more effective than the Bush Corruption machine.
Heck If Bush admin has so much spying and corruption why would anyone trust Bush or Cheney with that Data?

    Think about it. =)

  18. cynical ex-hippie says:

#12 We could also say Bill Clinton brought democracy to the Balkans, stopped an ethnic cleansing, brought war criminals to justice, and denied al Qaeda a training base.

What does al Qaeda need to train? A war zone, that’s what.

Bush and Republicans have failed miserably in the area of national security. Time to pound that into their pointy heads.

Forget philosophies of governance. The real issue of 06/08 should be competence.

  19. Don says:

Gerald, well yeah, by all means let’s get after the Dems, not for being wussies necessarily, for their failure to frame the issues (let George do it!). BUT when ever I get after Dems on this site I’m called all kinds of names. It’s kind of amusing, unfortunately it indicates a slavish party loyalty which leads to the political incompetence issue that you properly raised.

  20. Punchy says:

Let’s see….I’ll bullet-point the address right now, even before it’s given:

–9/11 changed everything. So much so, that I no longer follow the law

–9/11 made us vulnerable. So much so, that now I release “OBL” “tapes” that remind us that we are, but for some reason don’t remind everyone that he’s still alive, thanks to my incompetence.

–The War in Iraq changed everything, especially for over 2000 American families. But who cares about them? Where’s Baby Noor?

–All countries love us (that scream of “bullsh##” you’ll hear next is from across the pond)

–We’re moving democracies across the globe. Nevermind the new gov’ts are actually terrorist organizations.

–The economy is great, Ford, Delphi, GM, oil prices, natural gas prices, savings, collective debt, the country’s debt, foreign ownership be dammed.

–Everyone loves me, Cheney, Alito, and Gonzo…b/c I said so, and I’m rejecting reality…again.

  21. Kaptain KoolAid says:

42% is the highest approval rating any president has ever had!! It’s just amazing! Only stupid liberals wouldn’t realize how incredibly popular our beloved president is!

  22. big papa says:

“My administration will do everything in our power t’ protect th’ ‘meriken people”

“Some may disagree with my methods, but that’s what’s so wonderful about a country like ours where eagles soar upon clouds of wisps of white frothy mountainous snow. It’s hard work protectin’ this freedom we hold so dear…”

“September the eeleventh changed our country forever. Those billowy white clouds of freedom and democracy were transformed into huge gray smoky choking dust from the collapse of the twin towers, as America’s enemies sought to level our lofty goals of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness…’

“I have a duty to protect th’ ‘meriken people from terrorism, from an enemy that hates our way of life and i take that duty seriously…”

“As your prezdent, I would not presume myself t’ be above the laws of this great land. Th’ Constitution is clear, during times of great conflict and danger I as Commander-in-Chief have not only th’ solemn duty but the inherent power t’ protect th’ ‘merken people by any and all means necessary”….

  23. Jesus Christ God of WAR says:

#6 – Amazing find! Thanks for the link.

… These Justice Department lawyers, backed by their intrepid boss Comey, had stood up to the hard-liners, centered in the office of the vice president, who wanted to give the president virtually unlimited powers in the war on terror. Demanding that the White House stop using what they saw as farfetched rationales for riding rough-shod over the law and the Constitution, Goldsmith and the others fought to bring government spying and interrogation methods within the law. They did so at their peril; ostracized, some were denied promotions, while others left for more comfortable climes in private law firms and academia. Some went so far as to line up private lawyers in 2004, anticipating that the president’s eavesdropping program would draw scrutiny from Congress, if not prosecutors. These government attorneys did not always succeed, but their efforts went a long way toward vindicating the principle of a nation of laws and not men.

It seems as if someone on the “inside” might actually care about process and law. Still, they were driven to the outside of that evil circle of power.

  24. Don says:

Jan. 26 (Bloomberg) — A majority of Americans said the presidency of George W. Bush has been a failure and that they would be more likely to vote for congressional candidates who oppose him, according to a CNN/USA Today/Gallup poll.

Fifty-two percent of adults said Bush’s administration since 2001 has been a failure, down from 55 percent in October. Fifty- eight percent described his second term as a failure. At the same point in former President Bill Clinton’s presidency, 70 percent of those surveyed by Gallup said they considered it a success and 20 percent a failure.

The percentage of Americans who called Bush “honest and trustworthy” fell 7 percentage points in the last year to 49 percent, the poll found.

The new poll also found that 62 percent of Americans said they are “dissatisfied” with “the way things are going” in the U.S., unchanged from a December survey. The percentage of “dissatisfied” Americans reached its peak in October of 2005 when 68 percent of those surveyed agreed.

Okay, Democrats, here’s your angle for everything:

Whenever Bush opens his mouth on any subject, your Standard Response should be: “He’s lied to us on Iraq, he’s lied to us on Social Security, he’s lied to us on terrorism, he’s lied to us on why he’s broken the law to wiretap honest American churchgoing Christian Quakers. What makes you think he’s telling the truth now?”

  25. Democrat Soldier says:

#24 – Don, I like your response point!

I used something similar at work when talking about current issues with my conservative co-workers. They were telling my I should trust Pres. Bush when he said he was only wiretapping conversations with terrorists:
Well, I have to give you that point. Just because Pres. Bush lied about Iraq, Social Security, the budget deficits, and his REASONS for the wiretapping doesn’t necessarily mean he’s lying about WHO he’s wire tapping. (cough, cough)

  26. big papa says:

    49%…Bush “trustworthy and honest”…

    …American “dementia” pandemic…

    #6, CFT,
I saw the same thing yesterday – today it is in my copy of Newsweek. So it hasn’t been totally lost — let’s watch while it gets no traction in coverage.

Bushiva in his SCROTUM address tmw nite is going to call for an elevation of civility in political discourse- now that Alito’s confirmation is all but secured…

Fu*k Bushiva, his followers, his Party, his co-conspirators and his collaborators (in the Dem 17 who voted for the Alito nomination to go through)…

    They’re ALL traitors!

SCROTUM (State of the Corrupt Republiscum Oligarchic Treasonous Union of Mass murderers)

  29. TerrytheTurtle says:

State of the Union Address – watch this and take your spouse out to dinner instead.
