On Hardball last night, Chris Matthews coached DeLay through lies about his 2000 trip to London and Scotland. Watch it:
MATTHEWS: Do you think that’s unfair to say that you went over there [Scotland] on a junket?
DELAY: It’s incredibly unfair.
MATTHEWS: Why? Who paid for the trip?
DELAY: A legitimate conservative organization.
MATTHEWS: But wasn’t there a pass through?
DELAY: No, there was no pass through.
MATTHEWS: They came up with the money themselves.
DELAY: That’s exactly right. They raised their money themselves.
The trip — which was allegedly arranged through the National Center for Public Policy Research, a non-profit — was actually funded by Abramoff. DeLay’s airfare was charged to Jack Abramoff’s American Express card. (House ethics rules bar lawmakers from accepting travel and related expenses from registered lobbyists.)
The Washington Post also reports, “Multiple sources, including DeLay’s then-chief of staff Susan Hirschmann, have confirmed that DeLay’s congressional office was in direct contact with Preston Gates [Abramoff’s lobbying firm] about the trip itinerary before DeLay’s departure, to work out details of his travel.â€
In short: the trip was a junket, it was not paid for by the non-profit, and there was a pass through. You just wouldn’t know that from watching Matthews show.
More on Chris Matthews at Open Letter to Chris Matthews.
[...] What the hell has gotten into Chris Matthews. I just don’t get it. He’s acting like Tom Delay’s personal image consultant. Isn’t his show called Hardball? Didn’t he used to be a little less of a right-wing ass kiss? [...]
January 31st, 2006 at 2:27 pmMissed it. In child psych.fashion; Did Matthews get out the hand puppets and ask Delay where the bad man touched him?
January 31st, 2006 at 2:28 pmWTF is Matthews doing? I used to always watch his show. What is he doing? This isnt journalism. This is freaking me out. What does he know the rest of us do not? Is there about to be a purge against all of us that dont support King Bush? What is he so afraid of? Losing his job? Surely he doesnt live pay check to pay check.
Seriously people this is scarey. What could cause someone to change so completely like this? What does he know that we dont?
January 31st, 2006 at 2:33 pmThis type of activity is exactly why they have shows like Hardball on the air. To sugar coat the corruption, or, just say it doesn’t exist. It’s msnbc after all, you’ve got to consider the source.
January 31st, 2006 at 2:35 pmTweety asks long, leading questions in order to allow his bestest friend 4ever to answer in short, concise sound bites. DeLay is a big, fat crook, and Tweety has to know that. Any connection between DeLay and Tweety — other than the engagement ring?
January 31st, 2006 at 2:35 pmI never watch Matthew’s “Soft Balls”…waste of time.
January 31st, 2006 at 2:36 pmHmmmm, is GE threatening cancellation of Matthews low rated show?
January 31st, 2006 at 2:40 pmDeLay lies and Matthews swears to it.
Who’d of thunk it?

Chris doesn’t know it’s uncouth to suck someone off on basic cable.
January 31st, 2006 at 2:46 pmI’m guessing that since the exodus of Gannon/Guckert, Matthews sees a great “opening” in the administration that he can “fill” ,or “be filled”.
January 31st, 2006 at 2:58 pmThat “interview” should have a nice slow porn soundtrack behind it. Bwaah chika a wah wah…bwaah chika a wah wah
January 31st, 2006 at 2:59 pm#1 and #3. Matthews has been carrying water for the RW for a L A A W N G time. This is NOT new. Look back at campaign 2000 and see his clowning on Gore revealed. He and O’Factor are on equal footing. All air and no stone(s).
January 31st, 2006 at 3:01 pmTweety is a GOP tool, but there is something
January 31st, 2006 at 3:01 pmextra special going on here with DeLay.
What it is however, I almost don’t want to think about it.
This is one of the reasons I travel less often to Media matters, I can’t handle the visuals. Too many pathogens. Chris matthews is the olestra of journalism, leaner, new and improved but still suffers from bloating, gas and leaking of unsightly material.
January 31st, 2006 at 3:07 pmRead this little nugget about Matthews and I think it’ll connect some dots:

And if you’re sick and tired of it, please focus your efforts here:

January 31st, 2006 at 3:10 pmChris matthews is the olestra of journalism, leaner, new and improved but still suffers from bloating, gas and leaking of unsightly material.
Awesome.
January 31st, 2006 at 3:17 pmChris Matthews was not elected, appointed or otherwise ordained by any authority that matters so much as a nat’s ass. He has bought his own knee pads. I don’t care if 62% of the 68% of the 13% of the people who can not be just iritated beyond by his manner and morphing story line. Everyday Italian is on at 16:30 where i am I sure learn a lot more from that show and the atmosphere and visuals are lovely. Just turn his ass off. He has said some questionable comments that need a masive dose of beano. I dont keep eating what make me ill.
January 31st, 2006 at 3:21 pmWow, that’s incredible. How can people just lie straight faced on television, and think they won’t get caught?
January 31st, 2006 at 3:21 pmyeppers ole matthews was a coaching tommy boy. just like when I was coaching distance runners be a good cheerleader and drive the route beside of them saying Good Job! Way to go! that was what matthews was doing last night.
You could tell it and you could tell tommy boy was setting there lying his fat arnse off.
January 31st, 2006 at 3:22 pm#3 – Ever consider that Matthews hasn’t changed all that much? Being against the invasion of Iraq doesn’t make him a liberal. Just remember what the priority is: it’s the career.
January 31st, 2006 at 3:25 pmHe should change the name of his show to ChinBalls.
He is THE worst psuedo journalist around. Scarborough and and Dildo Bill O’Reilly make Matthews look fair and balanced.

January 31st, 2006 at 3:30 pmIf ever there was proof enough that the MSM is doing the Evil Empire’s bidding, this must be it.
Take a close look, folks. This is how the media behaved in Germany during the 1930’s and 1940’s.
January 31st, 2006 at 3:33 pmGSD,
Do you ever get a chance to watch The Colbert Report on Comedy Central? If not, I recommend it. The man is hysterical!
January 31st, 2006 at 3:33 pmI continue to find it amazing that Chris can speak so clearly with the GOP’s ding-dong stuck down his throat.
He’s like a ventriloquist.
January 31st, 2006 at 3:34 pmBanned from eschaton?
CENSORED
Hey, that’s, um, interesting.
This is life in the bizzarro world that is the United States of American in 2006.
I was just banned from posting comments on Duncan Black’s vaunted eschaton site. What’s Mister Black afraid of? Little me? One guy with a keyboard? It’s very populist and democratic of him to black me out just like that, with no explanation or warning. We are not amused…
On the other hand, I’m pleased my words carry enough freight to afflict him so strongly.
And I was worried about my writing getting rusty.
It must suck to be so intellectually challenged by my tapping fingers that Mister Black feels my voice should be silenced. I must be amazingly, extraordinarily threatening and/or obnoxious if I exceed the vitrolic commenting that seems the norm over there, whatever intelligence it masks. But God help you if you step off the whining party line. I swear, I’ve never seen such a pack of shrills and it’s depressing, more depressing than political developments. It’s depressing because if the inhabitants of eschaton are the pinnacle of American intelligentsia and articulate dissent, it’s no surprise we’re in the mess we’re in.
The funny part is that I don’t even know why I was banned. He hasn’t responded to my e-mail asking him why. I’ll refrain from further comment to give him a chance to justify his love. If any of you gentle readers would like to do me a favor and click over there and ask him why I’m banned, I’d be grateful. But somehow, I don’t think Mister Black is thinking about my opinion, but just reinforcing his cabal of weenies. Thin skins, eh?
I wonder if he’s just an information collection site for the right wing?
Incidentally, I’ve also been banned from the Brown Cafe, a site for UPS slaves, er, employees because I asked too many questions about workers compensation lawsuits against UPS.
January 31st, 2006 at 3:34 pmHey skunk,
Why don’t you post here what you suspect pissed off the Eschaton folks and perhaps we can chime in with an opinion?
January 31st, 2006 at 3:37 pmWTF is Matthews doing?
Seriously people this is scarey. What could cause someone to change so completely like this? What does he know that we dont?
Comment by Gerald Gibson
Unlike the rest of you rats he knows a sinking ship when he sees one. HA!
January 31st, 2006 at 3:43 pmIS THIS A TRIP THAT CHRIS MATTHEWS GOT FOR FREE FROM DELAY?
January 31st, 2006 at 3:44 pmhave skunk,
I’ve been banned from Eschaton, too, and like you, I’ve received no reason as to why. I posted there under another handle for quite a while – from right around the Trent Lott to-do in 2003 up until Katrina – and dropped off for reasons I’d rather no go into here (nothing major for anyone concerned, though). I’ve recently took to popping back in there as of late, until last week when I was banned. I have no earthly idea why. I’ve also emailed Atrios and, like you, received no word why. Far as I can tell, I have done nothing to deserve it.
That being said, it’s no real skin off my nose, as I can find other ways to occupy my time. Now, on-topic, Chris Matthews is a massive embarrasment to the very idea of journalism…but that’s nothing new, either. Neither is the concept that the national mainstream media is little more than a collection of apologists and water-carriers for Corporate America, the same people who give the GOP their marching orders (notice all the hot air about gay marriage, but the bankruptacy bill and eminent domain decisions slip by under the public’s radar). They know where the money is, I suppose. It sure ain’t in informing the public.
January 31st, 2006 at 3:44 pmMatthews is in blatant “make Republicans look good” mode right now. The proof is in his interview last night with Delay and Delay’s Demcratic challenger. The questions to Delay were pathetically softball and said with politeness and reassurance. The questions to the Democratic challenger were hostile and judgemental. What a tool.
January 31st, 2006 at 3:46 pmSo Atrios is banning people for no apparent reason? People that are progressives/left-leaning? Doesn’t make sense. Is it possible that he’s blocked a range of ip’s or an entire subnet and you’ve been caught in the dragnet?
January 31st, 2006 at 3:47 pmUnlike the rest of you rats he knows a sinking ship when he sees one.
Then why in the world would he be trying to help a guy who’s definately a sinking ship? I mean, if you’re looking for embattled Republican politicos who’re being oppressed by the mean, old Law, you could certainly find a better poster boy than Tom DeLay. Hell, even the GOP and Bush Administration are distancing themselves from the Bugman.
Maybe Chris misplaced that memo. Or maybe – and here’s a wild idea – someone who calls himself a “journalist” shouldn’t be trying to make a dirty politician look clean. Just maybe.
January 31st, 2006 at 3:47 pmJay,
January 31st, 2006 at 3:49 pmI figure that’s what happened in my case. The only odd things are, one, it’s been almost two weeks since I was banned and, two, the two emails I’ve sent since then have gone unanswered.
Matthews has become his own biggest fan; his self-absorbed narcissism has reached the point where it now actively prevents him from being able to perform his duties as a credible journalist.
January 31st, 2006 at 3:51 pmYeah, IRI The Great Pirate Blogger is here to remind us of how the Left is so filthy. Greetings. ARRRRRRGGG
January 31st, 2006 at 3:51 pmQuite frankly, I’ve only popped in on the Eschaton site a handful of times and never posted, but for my money you can’t beat firedoglake (not to take anything away from ThinkProgress…they are great!).
Lots of blogs to choose from. If you can’t get an explanation, move on and contribute somewhere else.
January 31st, 2006 at 3:52 pmMatthews acted like a fawning coach for Delay. “You live a modest lifestyle” why do you “serve the public” — it was like watching an overprotective parent coach a reluctant child. I don’t know why Tweety displays his partisanship so boldly these days, I think the channels are all Fox wannabees and Matthews thinks he is MSNBC’s O’Lielly.
January 31st, 2006 at 3:53 pmNow, he has added Scarborough (a front row sitter at Bush’s staged Social Security performances) Cosby ( former Fox host) and Carlson (the bow-tied juvenile who suffers from diarrhea of the mouth, recently from CNN’s team with Robert Novak). Three puppet monkeys dancing on Hardball with the Bush loving host chump.
IRI,
The Daily KOS story, if true, explains it.
January 31st, 2006 at 3:53 pmMarie, check out the link to dkos in post #16.
January 31st, 2006 at 3:54 pmWhat a fucking liar. Just what a fucking liar. Matthews makes me sick.
January 31st, 2006 at 3:54 pmTucker may have an eodipus complex, look as his wife.
January 31st, 2006 at 3:55 pmT´he proper name for the Chris Matthews show is SOFTBALL. He has been throwing softballs and playing touch feely with the puke freaks for months now.
He is TURDBLOSSOM11.
January 31st, 2006 at 4:03 pmYahoo’s News Headline reads, Bush Speech to Seek to Restore Confidence. It seems the tactic is that if we talk about how much good we do and how good we act, etc. that people will believe it. Matthews / DeLay is taking the same tact. The “If we say it’s so, it must be so” approach to life. Of course, when actions / behavior doesn’t equal words, then people turn them off. That’s the bush problem. He talks, talks and talks, but nothing positive happens. We are stuck listening to him talk about all his marvelous deeds for the next three years. Bet he can’t do it!
January 31st, 2006 at 4:03 pmThere is no such thing as a ‘legitimate conservative organization.’
Think Jeff Gannon.
Come November, the so-called Republicans are toast.
January 31st, 2006 at 4:21 pm#30 and #26, you do realize that when you sign up to post on redstate.org, they tell you right off that they are a conservative site and won’t permit any dissention? No posts that aren’t in agreement with coservative doctrine. Some sites are just like that, don’t want any sort of disagreement.
January 31st, 2006 at 4:27 pmMore Tweety…
What is Chris Matthew’s interest in seeing DeLay cleared of these charges?
January 31st, 2006 at 4:29 pmThere must be something more there….
Poll shows just 25% want Bush directing policy; 52% rate presidency a failure
January 31st, 2006 at 4:31 pmMATTHEWS BRAIN HASN’T WORKED RIGHT SINCE HIS STROKE….WHOOPS, I WASN’T SUPPOSED TO TELL….NEVERMIND…..
January 31st, 2006 at 4:31 pmyou see that mr Bush 25% think you can run the company, just quit george, do America a Favor

January 31st, 2006 at 4:33 pmMatthews is a Rotating Pundits now
A ‘rota-Pun’, or some other clever name I havent got yet,,
Ahhh Better Yet
Rent-a-Pun maybe..
January 31st, 2006 at 4:35 pmdelay looks as if he might have had a stroke, or much toxic chemicals and alcohol, cant tell where hes looking…
January 31st, 2006 at 4:37 pmDELAY: No, there was no pass through.
MATTHEWS: They came up with the money themselves.
DELAY: That’s exactly right. They raised their money themselves.
MATTHEWS: They Told you To Buy Off Senators?
DELAY: Yes Exactly Right, they Told Me to Buy.
Delay sounds like a Robot repeating its master..weird.
January 31st, 2006 at 4:39 pmMatthews is helping the GOP, but not in the way that you would think. The GOP is scared to death of DeLay “turning over” and making a deal with the prosecutors, naming names. For them, this has to be stopped at all costs. Instead, they are constantly building up the confidence of Tom DeLay, encouraging him to scoff at the charges and believe that he will get away scot-free. This way, he’ll refuse to make any deals pre-trial, plead innocent, and then get convicted in court. They want this to be a total shock to him, and the best way to do that is to delude him into believing the hype. Matthews is carrying water for the GOP, helping them dupe DeLay for this reason.
January 31st, 2006 at 4:45 pmIf this is an example of “Liberal Media” in action, WTF are the righties always bitching about?!? Spare me.
January 31st, 2006 at 5:04 pmAgain, Mr. Matthews leaves me in awe of his incredibly clumsy and opaque propaganda skills. Why is he on the air? Sensationalism sure beats debate! I still believe the mass of Americans are brain damaged from lead in the air and arsenic levels in the water approved by the EPA!
January 31st, 2006 at 5:17 pmThen again I find this all fascinating. I am in France so I follow the Hardball Saga as if reading Braille. I wish I could actually see hiim on a big screen instead of the occasional Quicktime snippet on my ordinateur….Yes, I agree that the interview with DeLay could have used a porno soundtrack!
I watch interviews on French TV all the time and am amazed at the amount of preparation done by the anchors here. They have teeth and know how to use them. No one gets a free ride! I invite French friends to watch Meet The Press and Mcglauglin Report on Satellite to see their reactions on Sundays…most of the time they end up cowering in disbelief at what passes for political discussion on American media…I have to explain that these are the more rational examples…..
Wouldn’t it be awesome if the Republican control of Washington falls apart because Ambramoff was just too greedy to forgo the Membership Rewards points?
January 31st, 2006 at 5:42 pmann (#47),
It wasn’t redstate.org; it was Eschaton, a liberal (or at least pro-Democrat) site. I’ve been banned from the wingnut usual suspects (LGF, FreeRepublic, etc.) and I perfectly support the idea that a webmaster has the right to ban whomever from his/her comments. However, for one, I am a long-time poster at Atrios’ place (albeit under a different handle, but most folks seemed to acknowledge the switch) and, two, I never posted anything that I would’ve thought objectionable (a relative measure, to be sure, but you’ll have to trust me on this). As much disdain I have for the DNC, I’m not even the type to scream bloody murder at any hint of supporting Democrats. Hellfire, people even comment how “nice” I was to trolls in trying actively engage them in discourse rather than just the usual crap-tossing. Again, it’s not a big deal, but it is puzzling.
Apologies for taking this off-topic, but really…how many more times can one say “Chris Matthews is a humongous dork” with such blaring evidence.
January 31st, 2006 at 5:53 pmHmmm….sponson in post #56,
That’s an interesting take on Tom Delay and the media blowjobs trying to delude him into believing the hype. It would certainly fit the Rovian eat-your-young playbook.
Anything to back it up other than your own speculation? I’d enjoy reading more on that…even if it’s not based on any hard evidence.
Thanks!
January 31st, 2006 at 6:04 pmSo Atrios is banning people for no apparent reason? People that are progressives/left-leaning? Doesn’t make sense.
Comment by Jay
It makes sense if you consider that the communist left routinely shot their own people for the slightest infraction or perceived criticism. Same rules apply. The Skunk was complaining (as every true liberal Democrat should) about the direction the Filthy Left has taken the party. How many times do I have to thank you losers for making this country a one party state?-
January 31st, 2006 at 6:30 pmTom DeLay’s new nickname should be “The Cry Baby”. If he was really so innocent, he should be the big jerk he has always been. He didn’t do anything wrong, or so he says. Why is he being such a pussy? So not his style.
January 31st, 2006 at 6:30 pm#40, Jay,
January 31st, 2006 at 6:43 pmThanks – that does help explain Matthews’ sucking up to Delay. The jerk should give up pretending to be a “journalist,” and join the Support Tom Delay Club.
62 I-R-I,
Wingers deserve to be banned for serial stupidity. It’s not a crime to be stupid….but maybe it should be.
Lying, stealing, cheating and killing are no way to go through life. Do us all a favor and get behind the effort to stop this administration because if you don’t, you’ll go the way of every fascist or imperialistic government in history…you’ll be defeated. Get right with God I-R-I, or suffer the fate you’ve earned.
January 31st, 2006 at 7:12 pmMatthews said tonight that he would do his “civic duty” and report the Democratic response after the SOTU.
January 31st, 2006 at 7:15 pmIsn’t that big of him — to stoop so low as to acknowledge the Democrats — sort of like tossing crumbs to the rabble.
The guy is a piece of work.
actually mathews may have been found out to have formerly performed with what starts as a c and ends with an r by delay or others.
January 31st, 2006 at 7:21 pmactually as well those of you who have mentioned its scary about maybe mathews knowing something we do not ought to have your heads handed to you. If these bastards even try to harm a liberal be it one or, be it a million then is when we have to hand it back to them with as much savage force as they try on us. We have enough cowards in the world especially the mathews types and the creeps behind Bush. I would have no problem dying cutting the b…s off some of them.
January 31st, 2006 at 7:26 pmIRI wasn’t the old Soviet Union a one party state?
January 31st, 2006 at 7:47 pmDoesn’t desperation fuel the single party state?

Oh sweetie, the kind folks at this site give a partisan lunatic like yourself the right to post clearly illegal hate speech daily, and the free republic will shut down anyone that doesn’t bow to the party line. Those of us who actually have a functional brain realize that rightwing partisans like yourself aren’t really dissenting, you’re just ranting from your emotional centers. I appreciate that they allow this level of free speech at the site, but honey it just shows that we need medical treatment for poor lost souls like yourself – it doesn’t help you or your cause any.
So I forgive you for your hatred, your anger, and your immoral attachment to the destruction of your fellow man under the guise of saving them. Fear, anger and hate make people do evil unknowingly – and it’s clear that the tower of emotion is there for little pumpkin heads like yourself but there’s no-one home at the moment. If your IQ numbers were true, it’s really sad to see how disabled you are at the moment. It’s like watching John Nash melt down into a puddle of anti-commie conspiracy rants. Have you ever been tested for Schizophrenia pumpkin? It might be something to consider – because you seem to be punching at ghosts there big guy.

It really should be capitalized Bob. That’s a little description I came up with for a group of Walking Dead Losers who’s entire philosophy is supported by Treason, Atheism, Abortion and Sodomy. If that’s not filthy please tell me what is? The Filthy Left are not to be feared they are to be pitied and locked up. What do you think Bush built all those camps in West Texas for anyway?
February 1st, 2006 at 8:09 am#77 So what would you call a member of a group who has written about a child being placed in a cage with a bear, who had been trained to couple with humans? (Scooter Libby) Or, giving crack to 15 year old girls, in exchange for sex? (Bill O’Reilly) I hope you hold them to the same high standards. But they are clearly not on the “Left”, so… what does that make them, O Judgemental One?
February 1st, 2006 at 8:30 amIt’s the ratings. Matthews and his producers decided that the people who regularly read newspapers and watch news programs are older more conservative, ex dopeheads now aligned with some Jeezus Pimp’s WalMart/CostCo indoctrination center. To appeal to them he has with the help of third stringers such as Scar,Crosby,He Who Jon Stewart Made A Fool Of,other shills for the Bush Malediction now bray and snort. His school room snitch routine “OOOH Hilary was chewing gum!” the far more fouler than the DeLaid coach, was the slobbering kiss up to Rudy Guiliani are now typical.

Verizon actually read the e mail and responded back in a personal manner. Let’s hope they both get the message and stop advertising for Chris to spread lies and making crooks look like saints.
