SOTU: Bush Wanted Biofuel Cuts

SOTU: Bush Wanted Biofuel Cuts»

Bush says: “The best way to break this [oil] addiction is through technology. … We will also fund additional research in cutting-edge methods of producing ethanol, not just from corn but from wood chips, stalks, or switch grass. Our goal is to make this new kind of ethanol practical and competitive within six years.”

FACT — BUSH PUSHED FOR BIOFUELS CUTS IN LATEST BUDGET: In President Bush’s FY06 budget, “the RBS Renewable and Energy Efficiency Grant/Loan Guarantee Program would be scaled back to $10 million from $23 million in FY05, the NRCS Biomass Research and Development Program would be cut by $2 million to $12 million, and the CCC Bioenergy Program would be slashed $40 million from $100 million in FY05 to $60 million in FY06.” [Renewable Energy Access, 2/28/05]

Bush is doing everything in his power to make alternatives more competitive: by pursing a higher oil price policy! As the price of oil rises all alternatives (including biofuels) become more competive. 3 more years of 50% increases in the price of oil might just make ethanol practical and competitive.
I suppose TP was expecting Bush to help bring down the absolute (not relative) cost of biofuels? haha

  2. Citizen USA Says:

So let’s See…Addicted to Foreign Oil. Sure George.

And NOW the USA is going to switch to ethanol from Twigs and Grass from the Heartland. Hmmm.

That’s Odd though… Seeing as how the USA just invaded
and occupied the richest OIL reserves on earth…

… using GI’s from that very same heartland…. Hmmm

One Citizen MUST wonder… China? India? Who? Where? When?

What? Is going to happen to all of that Not-So-Foreign-Oil… now that Iraq was colonized like the 51st state?

… Protected with Our Very Own National Guard and Reserves.

This is odd, odd indeed. One of the Latest Republican Meta-Cons… getting a roll-out in “The State of the Union Address.”

Send Your Boys and Girls to Die for Mid East Oil… for Cheney and Exxon and Enron…Yet don’t expect any of it at
    home…

Instead, pay the price of New Technology innovations… and Let Cheney and Exxon and Enron own the World’s Oil… and FUEL their ongoing Industrial Revolution of China and India.

Cleary, The State of the Union is One UNDER SIEGE… One of Immense CONs against the Citizenry.

God Bless our Over-Deployed and Under-Supplied Troops. Bring the Home NOW. The Nation NEEDS its National Guard.

  3. Paul Lyon Says:

One problem with the ethanol/biodiesel stuff is that folks in Brazil and Indonesia are tearing up much square miles of rain forest for this, meaning that we going to lose lots more endangered species, including the last wild orangutans, as a result. Be careful what you wish for. See George Monbiot’s column about this from this past December.

  4. jackovel Says:

Bush’s war machine is a gas guzzler. No hint of cutting back there.

  5. ohdave Says:

Let’s not forget that the candidate in 2000 who campaigned on green technologies was roundly ridiculed by the right….

  6. Jeffrey Stewart Says:

The president’s proposal is to reduce dependecy on foreign oil by 75% over the next 20 years? That will happen anyway!

  7. I-RIGHT-I Says:

Dubya and his dad are associated with the OIL CARTELS, so do NOT expect them to wean America off petroleum!

    Comment by Jay Randal

Biofuels are bullshit. There is NOTHING out there to replace good old Ethel. Hey boiz and gurls BUSH LIED! He was feeding you full of bio-crap. He cut the funding because it’s WASTED MONEY! He just told you he liked alternative energy because he knows you’re too stupid to handle the truth….there is no alternative energy that is as cost effective as OIL. Period.

I beleive that HEMP is a renewable source of Biodiesel:
“Dubya and his dad are associated with the OIL CARTELS, so do NOT expect them to wean America off petroleum!

Is a very true statement, but you can make your own biodiesel in your home and save using petroleum as munch as you can for your own wallet.

“Biodiesel is the name for a variety of ester-based oxygenated fuels made from hemp oil, other vegetable oils or animal fats. The concept of using vegetable oil as an engine fuel dates back to 1895 when Dr. Rudolf Diesel developed the first diesel engine to run on vegetable oil. Diesel demonstrated his engine at the World Exhibition in Paris in 1900 using peanut oil as fuel. Source from hempcar.org”
