SOTU: How the Bush Administration Changes the Tone

Bush said: “[E]ven tough debates can be conducted in a civil tone, and our differences cannot be allowed to harden into anger. To confront the great issues before us, we must act in a spirit of good will and respect for one another – and I will do my part.”

VICE PRESIDENT CHENEY: “F*** yourself.” — speaking to Sen. Patrick Leahy (D-VT). [Washington Post, 6/24/04]

PRESS SECRETARY SCOTT MCCLELLAN: “It is baffling that he is endorsing the policy positions of Michael Moore and the extreme liberal wing…” — speaking about decorated Marine veteran Rep. Jack Murtha (D-PA). [11/17/05]

KARL ROVE: “Liberals saw the savagery of the 9/11 attacks and wanted to prepare indictments and offer therapy and understanding for our attackers.” [6/24/05]

Bush – ” I will do my part.” (Then I’ll knife in the back)

    Just empty words.

  3. Guardian of Indifference says:

Was Cindy Sheehan arrested at SOTU for trying to bring in an anti-war banner, or is that just an internet rumor.

  4. John O says:

The man is totally shameless, but I suppose he has to say nice things in this speech. Should be funny, and I have to congratulate him on his epiphany on the oil situation. LOL.

  5. John O says:

“…yet, if you happen to be an Iraqi woman, the whole freedom thing may seem a little further away for you.”

“But America is working toward taking freedom away from our women, too.”

  6. John O says:

Dingdingdingding!!!! The obligatory anecdotal reference to the fallen soldier!

    THAT’S elevating the debate!

  7. John O says:

“…let us never forget the sacrifice of America’s military families.”

Including the sacrifices we call policy, so that the rich could pay fewer taxes and we could pay for this whole mess.

  8. Lily says:

Will Sheehan’s arrest outrage the American sheep?

  9. Marie says:

So much for civil discourse in the congress.

  10. Neal says:

    Ya Bush’s don’t-criticize-anything-I-do type debate

  11. bill says:

Suddenly Bush wants everybody to be Civil, unbelievable,,,,How dare this man stand up there a Lie like that.

  12. James Olson says:

Yesterday I witnessed a liar lie to a house full of liars, including the new one installed in the Supreme Court. We now have no hope, as even in the 2006 midterm elections, the Republicans have gerrymandered their districts. And, I witnessed Hillary, once again giving Bush a standing ovation! Have I taken the red pill, or the blue pill? Pinch me, am I conscious? Help me, please!!!!

  13. Randy Kewen says:

Cindy Sheehan did not unfurl a banner, the Capitol Police didn’t like her tee-shirt that said 2,245, How Many More?
The only disruption was the Capitol Police, frog marching her out in cuffs without even asking her to cover the slogan or zip up her jacket again. If a woman who has sacrificed her son to the Smirking Chimp’s failed dreams of world domination doesn’t have the right to make a statement of truth, then America sucks and has little to do with freedom or democracy. When do we get to see the real criminals frog marched out in cuffs, like Cheney and Rove, to mention only two?

  14. James Prskalo says:

    Well said Randy Kewen .

  15. mc says:

IMPEACH and all those in the cabal appointed by him. How many more lies will it take to remove this imposter from the presidency? ORGANIZE A SOCIALIST MOVEMENT and remove the big-business bi-partisan system!

  16. poor richard says:

Hitler had his secret police force too which also spied on the masses. “those who don’t remember history are comdemned to repeat it”.

  17. silas marner says:

Politics is a veneer to disguise force. Every political system enforces it’s will over the governed through the threat of force. In those which are benevolent and represent the common good of the greatest number the threat is directed primarily at those who threaten the well being of the population, i.e. murderers, thieves, etc. but even in the most benevolent political system, force is used, be it arrest and detention, or something worse.

In those political systems which are tyrannical and at odds with the population, the threat is directed at those who would challenge their position and status and is far more repressive and overtly violent, like the current regime.

It’s simply a matter of motivation (benevolent/tyrannical) and degree (censure and criticism/detention, torture and death)

It requires almost no deep thinking to see which one we are dealing with, regardless of rhetoric used by those in power.

  18. Raising Kaine » Raising America says:

[...] Where Mr. Bush laughingly trifled with the idea of bipartisanship and his irresponsible call to make massive tax cuts for the wealthy permanent, Mr. Kaine promoted Virginia’s Better Way: long-term architecture of fiscal responsibility created by a bipartisan effort in the state legislature. [...]

It’s interesting to me how the “Cindy Sheehan tried to unfurl a banner” story got started. CNN went with that story first, source unknown to me, and it was picked up by others. Later, they corrected the story to say what was true; that she was only wearing an anti-war t-shirt.

This has been the standard operating procedure for the Republicans. They plant a bullshit story into the news cycle, which is run without verification. The right wing noise machine picks it up and repeats it endlessly and
the correction goes unnoticed. They get their support through lies and mendacity. There will come a time when it all comes crashing down and it won’t be pretty for any of us.

  20. Ken Daves says:

How about when bush gave the finger to the press!

This man is setting about to divide us, bankrupt us, and pave the way for a new, 4th Reich.

bush’s money came from his grandfather’s involvement in setting up and supporting hitler.

I’m also learning that the warburg jews and zionists in israel worked to prevent dissent against hitler.

Our true history is fascinating. This shit the media peddles as “instant history” is for fecophiliacs.

  21. Loopy says:

Why should Bush care what her tee shirt says, he can’t read!

I invite you to flee to France before it’s too late, we’ve got health care, euros, wine and cheese eating surrender monkeys and we even let you wear clothes in poor taste if you must.

  22. Harry Balz says:

This was basically PsyOps speech – written to keep the duped in line and supporting Der Fuhrer.

Anyone who has spent any time following the issues can see through this speech as something out of the Joeseph Goebbels “Handbook”.

  23. John Ballzack says:

George W Bush – a murderous, psychotic pervert… with an autocue.

  24. sam says:

I am very happy for what’s happening to americans now. for the longest time they swallowed the media about how the israelis are been hurt by the palestininas when the truth is the opposite. for years they sent billions and bilions of dollars yearly to the jewish murderers and rapist of palestinians. Bush is a punishment from God to america. taste the sufference that’s just starting. I hope one day you’ll eat your kids to survive. that’s the punishmet from God for what was happening to an innocent population and you were the helpers for these genocides. don’t ever say you were not part of it. You are as guilty as the zionist who put bullets in the heads of little children. your money bought those bullets. now these same zionists are in your govenment and they are telling your stupid president what to do. and even if you get rid of bush the next president will do exactly what these zionist will tell him to do.
