Bush said: “Tonight I will set out a better path – an agenda for a Nation that competes with confidence – an agenda that will raise standards of living and generate new jobs.”
FACT — JOB GROWTH UNDER BUSH LOWEST SINCE WORLD WAR II: Even since the 2003 tax cuts, job growth has been historically weak, growing at less than half the average rate for similar periods in comparable post-war recoveries. [Center for American Progress, State of the Economy, 1/26/06]
FACT — FEDERAL SPENDING ON WORKER EDUCATION AND TRAINING IS LOW: Federal spending on employment and training for dislocated workers in 2005 was just $1.5 billion, less than the amount spent on highway aid and less than was spent in 2000 ($1.6 billion), when the unemployment rate was lower. [Detroit Free Press, Bruce Katz Column, 1/23/06]
FACT — WORKERS ARE LOSING PENSIONS: The share of workers with a pension declined from 50.3 percent in 2000 to 40.6 percent in 2004. [Congressional Research Service, Pension Sponsorship and Participation]
“There is a difference between responsible criticism that aims for success and defeatism that refuses to see anything but failure. Hindsight is not wisdom and second-guessing is not a strategy.”

But…
Since Herbert Hover has there not been an unemployment as umpredictable as Bush’s record.
January 31st, 2006 at 10:41 pmNew jobs in America under Bush? Nope just minimum wage jobs at WalMarts, which is why thousands show up out of desperation to get a job when a WalMart opens!

1958 Sen George Malone said “The Global Theory of Free Trade is Siphoning off Americas Wealth and bringing her economy to the level of others. The Theory is displacing American Workers who otherwise would be employed”
January 31st, 2006 at 11:52 pm#4 Same happens in Europe.
But the idea of global free trade was a USA republican one mainly. They were eager to implement it, and get the profits, over the backs of the West workers, willing to cash in third world countries with less or no workers rights.
Blaming China for playing the game by the rules of the West is silly. The real responsibles are the greedy tycoons who invented the theory and wanted to implement it as soon as possible, without waiting for equal rights in all the world, and without previewing the potential might that countries with a bilion people have (India, China).
Today, Ford and GM are paying this botched greed bet. A luxury car is fine, and giantic car-truck with luxury equipment (Hummer likes) is no longer affordable for enough people to make it profitable, while losing ground in eco friendly technology to asian enterprises. And cheap chinese junk-cars at 3000 dollars each are far more profitable. They have 20% of countryside unemployement. They have room for a lot of factories with cheap workers, and to absorb every factory in the west.
Happy free trade everybody!
