SOTU: Poverty Has Worsened Under Bush

Bush said: “In New Orleans and in other places, many of our fellow citizens have felt excluded from the promise of our country.”

FACT — POVERTY RATES HAVE INCREAED UNDER BUSH: The poverty rate has risen each year since 2001, with 12.7 percent of the population now living in poverty. African-American poverty has risen from 22.7 percent in 2001 to 24.7 percent in 2004, and child poverty has gone from 16.3 percent in 2001 to 17.8 percent (1.3 million children under the age of 18). [U.S. Census Bureau, Aug. 2005, Tables B-1 and B-2]

FACT — BUSH TAX CUTS TARGETED AT HIGH-INCOME HOUSEHOLDS: The tax bills enacted since 2001 “have helped high-income households far more than other households,” according to the Center for Budget and Policy Priorities. Households with incomes exceeding $1 million have received average tax cuts of $103,000, “an increase of 5.4 percent in their after-tax income.” But in 2005, the bottom fifth of households “will receive an average combined tax cut of $18 from these bills, raising their after-tax income by 0.3 percent.” [Center on Budget and Policy Priorities, 10/17/05]

Bush claimed that abortion is at its lowest levels in decades, but I have read repeatedly that the number of abortions have gone up the last few years. Was this another lie?

White House Admits Bush Lied “When Bush was asked about [the Environmental Protection Agency's report] last week, he dismissively remarked: ‘I read the report put out by the bureaucracy.‘ …White House press secretary Ari Fleischer fessed up: President Bush didn’t actually read that 268-page Environmental Protection Agency report on climate change, even if he said he did. Fleischer was asked Monday at his daily White House briefing about Bush’s comments that he’d read the report. “Whenever presidents say they read it, you can read that to be he was briefed,” Fleischer said, producing laughter. –AP, June 10, 2002

    And many more Lies…

  11. One Citizen says:

My interpretive abilities must be sliding. I recall our President stating that Jesus Christ was his favorite philosopher in 2000. Has he changed his mind? Is he now entranced by the wiles of Leo Strauss instead of Jesus?

    - How much upward wealth transfer would Jesus promote?
    - How many elederly people would Jesus let suffer in the winter’s harsh chill?
    - How many college aid honorees would Jesus turn away to give his already well-to-do buddies huge tax breaks?
    - Would Jesus promise to fully fund NCLB and then skip out on that promise leaving a huge unfunded mandate for the already overburdened states?
    - How many towel-headed children would Jesus bomb into human mince meat?
    - How many classifications of people would Jesus relegate to second-class citizenship?
    - How many lying, thieving lobbyists would Jesus hang out with and do favors for?
    - How many men death sentences would Jesus commute?
    - How many shares of Halliburton would Jesus let his friends own while slipping through no-bid contracts guaranteed to crank up the stock price?
    - How many impoverished, third-world people would Jesus let his buddies use as effective slave labor to turn out huge profits?

I could go on, and on, and on but you all get my drift. I cannot claim to know the answers to the above questions. But I do know what my heart tells me, and it cries for the future of this great experiment in self-governance.

George W. Bush has a long track record of deceit, self-interest and self-righteousness. No President in history has so clearly said one thing and done just the opposite. In the face of the facts one cannot wonder if Shrub still holds Jesus to be his favorite philosopher.

God help us all. Save us from the deceptive leadership that puts themselves before the good of the nation.
