CNN/USA Today/Gallup:

Last night’s SOTU received the lowest level of positive reaction from viewers of President Bush’s tenure. (Via Hotline)

  1. The Ringmaster says:

    Comment: His worst SOTU yet.

Prediction: He not only gets no bounce, he sinks further in the polls

Conclusion #1: He proves again that there are lies, damn lies and State of the Union lies.

Conclusion #2: Bush complaining that America has an addiction to oil is like the CEO of Philip Morris complaining that America has an addiction to nicotine.

Conclusion #3: Bush’s has spent his political capital and it’s America that’s broke.

  2. mr ho says:

I thinks its because they have heard as man lies, and spins as they can possibly handle, Every Republican and Democrat and who ever I have spoken with, Even my daughters (19) and her friends (and Parents) have pretty much stopped listening to bush, or trust his words
Living In Dallas (yeh I see all those ‘texas’ Jabs) and there are basically NO Bush or W bumper stickers to be seen, anywhere.

his campaign speech I mean ERRR SOTU was, as all expected here, the Same SPIN. Bush either has to tell the truth or just go hide in the Basement with cheney for the Next three Years. Politically hes Dead Meat, in my View, of course.

Now, About these Texas Jokes I been Hearing… =)

  3. thot's says:

It was the Elephant dressed in the shinny shoes of a dishonest snake oil salesman.

  4. Wayne A. Schneider says:

#1 Conclusion #4: Our troops in Iraq are there to stay. Who else is going to man the two dozen permanent bases we’re building there?

[And as to colclusion 2: The CEO of Phillip Morris, or a previous one, already testified under oath that he did not think that nicotine is addictive. President Bush, on the other hand, has rarely, if ever, said anything under oath.]

  5. Sharon Cox says:

Good Morning America, how are ya.? Planned not to watch, but ended up watching anyway. Caught some of the drivel from several spin machines. CNN did a good job compared to most. Nothing new, more of the same ol crap with one exception, Bush made hints he want’s the senate and all people to join together (lock step) with all the crap he say’s. Gees! more lies, nothing new, say a lot and do nothing. Talk of good possible programs and then not act or cut the programs. Bla, Bla. Impeach now. Stop the potential civil war here at home by getting the liers and thieves out of office, no matter the party…….Blessings

  6. skiddlybop says:

Cindy Sheehan should have arrived with enough Army sign-up sheets pre-marked with the names of all the children of the Republikkkan chickenhawks of congress.

Especially Jenna and Barbara bush. They should be in the unarmored humvee instead of barfing their guts out in Greenwich Village while Secret Service takes away cell-phone cameras.

  7. Hardy Haberman says:

Funny how Bush tried to sound like a Democrat in his lie to the union speech. H wants a “feel good” bounce, but maybe the American public isn’t buying it.

  8. Ron says:

The US can’t pull out of Iraq until the job is finished. Also, hired mercenaries are making a grand a day. Soldiers make one-tenth that much.

The war must be fought at the greatest expense to murkan tax slaves. It is costing them arms and legs.

Blackwater Security, Dyncorps etc. have over fifteen thousand hired guns in Iraq. General Praeteus is in part protected by Blackwater Security.

Freedom ain’t free. Neither are the Iraqis.

    http://www.veteransforpeace.org/

  9. Hardy Haberman says:

By the way, Cindy Sheehan did arrive in a T-shirt with the number of dead in Iraq and was summarily arrested.

  10. Keith H. says:

I’m guessing that the lowest level of positive reaction from viewers of this b.s. is a direct result of the fact that for five long years this administration has made a consistent practice of: saying one thing, doing the direct opposite.
    They are, The Corporate Administration.

Off topic: I think I’ve found something that junior’s not a complete failure at.
He’s a pretty good liar, but I think the swivel-jaw gives him away.

  11. Bob says:

CNN/USA Today poll showed a 75% approval rating of the speech. CBS poll showed 77% approval rating. Oh how some like to twist polls.

  12. Jay says:

Last night’s event was the best public relations effort that money can buy, but it rings completely hollow to folks that have been paying attention.

What meaning do words have if they aren’t accompanied by deeds?

BuchCo has done everything in its power to thwart the development of alternative sources of energy.

They’ve underfunded healthcare and education to an alarming degree (in fact they’re cutting 12.7b from higher education funding TODAY!).

We are not winning in Iraq and we are creating a more dangerous world with Bush’s reckless foreign policy. You can’t invade countries in the name of spreading freedom and democracy and then undercut (or threaten) regimes that get democratically elected without being exposed as a complete fraud and hypocrite. The people of Iran support their new leadership by a wide margin. Don’t herald the virtues of freedom and democracy if you aren’t prepared to accept their results.

They are going to attack Iran and soon. Bush’s direct appeal to the people of Iran put a lump in my throat because it was exactly the same rhetoric he used in the runup to Iraq.

This little maniac needs to be put in his place and it needs to happen fast.

  13. Clif says:

BTW even though the chimp-in-chief didn’t admit it the leader of Iran was elected, and at least as democratically as the elections of FLA, 2000,2004, and Ohio,2004, 2005

  14. kindness says:

Bob, why don’t you give us some context there, like a link to the actual question they asked in their poll & how they asked it.

    Judd provided a source.

Even diehard bushies aren’t saying that dumbya’s approval rating is in the 70’s. I just clicked over to CNN and in today’s current poll 23% were more encouraged after the speech, 29% were less encouraged and 48% didn’t watch it. Are you adding the 48% and the 29%?

  15. Jay says:

Of course we all know that there’s little to no truth to this claim of trying to spread democracy and freedom, it’s just reason number 6 in a list of shifting rationales for invading and occupying Iraq. Just pointing out that the “freedon and democracy” lie doesn’t make any sense either and everytime another Middle Eastern nation democratically elects a regime that isn’t to BushCo’s liking they look even more incompetent and cycnical. They’re a bunch of know-it-all deskjockeys that think they can reshape global politics to suit their one and only master: greed.

  16. Mitch Cumsteen says:

Yes Iranians, you too may someday have the privilage of being arrested for wearing a T-shirt with factual printing on it under a jacket. Let the eagle soar!

  17. Democrat Soldier says:

At work, nobody is talking about the SOTU. And at my job, most people call themselves a conservative Republican!

I think they don’t want to bring up the state of things now the Pres. Bush has done his best at increasing the desctructive deficits, lowered expectations from his “nation building” and reduced funding of the Veterans Administration.

It’s too bad the elected Republicans have turned their backs on fiscal responsibility, supporting the troops, personal responsibility, and the “rule of law”.

  18. Southwest Bob says:

Transparency does wonders for credibility in life. It’s human nature to doubt anyone who keeps secrets and hides the truth. This mis-administration has made secrecy their mode of operation from day one. If George W. Bush wants, for example, to end America’s addiction to oil, why not release the Cheney oil executives meeting notes so Americans can see how they are working to reduce America’s dependence on oil? Or, what about one comment about the outrageous and offensive earnings reports for oil companies? The fact is that this president has established himself as being incompetent and given his failed personality, he will continue to fail over the next three years.

  19. Clif says:

I listened the c-span callin show and the medical savings program is already in trouble if the callers are any sample of the general public. They asked with high gas prices and high heating prices where does the president suggest they find the extra money for a savings account, BTW two of the callers described themselves as republicans.

  20. Ron says:

If the economy is so great, how come Ford Motor Company is at 8.52 USD, down from a high of more than 40 USD per share and GM is at 23.86 USD per share, down from a high of 91.00 USD per share? It doesn’t look like they’re doing that great. In fact, it looks like the prices are more or less depression era.

Something’s gotta give. What gives? Bush must go.

  21. Jay says:

…and if there’s any doubt that big oil and the power brokers in our federal government are birds of a feather (an oil-stained Exxon Valdez sorta feather), check this out:

    http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/energy_congress_gasoline_dc

Exxon/Mobil is getting billions in tax breaks, breaking profit records, we’ve had our most expensive stretch in history at the pump and why is all of this happening?

  22. AvengingAngel says:

It’s no surprise reaction was so negative. For a speech about nominally about the “Hopeful Society,” the Bush SOTU was all about partisan politics.

    For the details, see:
“The Hateful Society: The Top 10 State of the Union Highlights.”

  23. RED ALERT!!!! says:

    HEY!!!! WAKE UP!!!

    DIDN’T YOU HEAR????

THE HUMAN-ANIMAL HYBRIDS ARE TAKING OVER THE WORLD!!!!!

  24. hardass says:

ihang my shame ,watching Nancy Pelosi walk with the boy king with a big smile on her face and be part of the farce that was perpetrating on the american people at the SOTU address by this socalled president. WHY DID NO ONE CALLED ON HIS LIES .

  25. Gerald Gibson says:

    10) This strategy has been cooked up in the religious right. They have been talking for years about adopting the langauge of the liberal left so that they can pretend to be supporting American ideals like liberty and democracy. They never said they were actually going to DO anything to push liberty just that they were going to “adopt the langauge” of the left…aka lie with some truth sprinkled in to make themselves believable for those that want to believe in them. You see in the religious right world you can lie all you want as long as you dont admit to it and ask for forgiveness on sunday.

  26. Southwest Bob says:

#19 The medical savings program is dead on arrival. It does nothing to deal with the actual problem of high and increasing medical costs. To lay off the problem on consumers being unable to select the most cost effective care is disingenuous. This president has sold his political soul to get to this position in life and he can’t stop now. He also isn’t intelligent enough to look at complex problems and know that the proposed solutions will not work for the average American. Unfortunately for him, the average American can! His only out for the next three years is to keep yelling that we are at war and leave him alone.

  27. Lily says:

CNN/USA Today poll showed a 75% approval rating of the speech. CBS poll showed 77% approval rating. Oh how some like to twist polls.

    Comment by Bob — February 1, 2006

Oh, how some like to twist polls indeed!
    77% approved the speech’s proposals.

However, 68% do not believe he will be able to accomplish those goals.
    http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2006/02/01/opinion/polls/main1265484.shtml

  28. Gerald Gibson says:

    27) Bush will not be able to accomplish those goals ONLY because Bill Clinton will pull out all the BJ stops and make them fail.

  29. Wayne A. Schneider says:

#23 Jane and I were watching and when he got to the “human-animal hybrids” ban, all four of our eyebrows went up. Has the Island of Dr. Moreau (sp?) become a reality? Is South Park’s Dr. Mephisto running around loose making monkeys with four asses? Is this a big problem?

Or is he proposing a total ban on temporary animal organ transplants used to keep people alive until a human donor is available?

  30. Michael Wolf says:

Ok, isn’t it clear to everyone…. nobody and I mean nobody believes a word this man says…. even conservative Republicans. I understand the public giving him a pass on his first SOTU speech, but after what we know about his “infamous” 16 word lie…Bush has zero integrity.

What really is getting exhausting is to watch is the news anchors “interviewing” senators and “others” trying to find some positive spin on what was said. I would love to know the political affiliations of these anchors (whether it’s CNN, ABC, CBS, etc.).

Truth is the real victim here!

What I heard Bush say and what “they” said I heard was amazing!!

Bush lies and “misinterprets the facts” over and over again throughout his fictional presentation and not one “Anchor,” questions it. No pointing out the discrepancies or facts…nothing.

Journalist integrity is just as important as the actual event. The major networks score an F… no wonder there ratings are what they are. Personal opinions are not the news!!

  31. Terry says:

Could not bring myself to watch it. early on I would give Dumbya the benefit of the doubt even if I disagreed with his policies. His incompetence and mendacity have been proven over and over again so what is the sense of watching someone who lies and has no good ideas? The interesting thing is that I have gotten exactly the same reaction from several people who said they actually voted for the moron. Rove keeps thinking that all can be salvaged with soundbites, spin and the rightwing media, but eventually even American sheep realize the Emperor has no clothes. Of course, that still will not make a difference in November unless the Democrats get their act together. So far I am not encouraged.

  32. Jay says:

    Gerald,

Agreed, and the Compromised Corporate Media gives them cover as they lie and spin and tell us what we just experienced.

This country is in more trouble than I can express with words. Frankly, I would expect both China and Russia to respond very harshly to an attack on Iran as they have so much at stake geopolitically. We are being driven over a cliff by these fanatical warmongers and threatening Iran is akin to stepping on the gas pedal. Russia and China, for the first time in 2005 executed joint military exercises. This, I’m sure was not decided upon lightly and it is an ominous sign for all of us. The neocons claim that the war on terror is the start of WWIII. I say an attack on Iran starts WWIII, and it will involve nukes.

    Buckle your chinstraps.

  33. Zookeeper says:

Here’s an article by Cindy Sheehan about what happened to her at the SOTU:

    http://www.commondreams.org/headlines06/0201-01.htm

  34. Ron says:

Judas Goat Bush has had his hayday. The game is over.

  35. wisedup says:

Thank you Lily for telling the truth, now could you teach the bush gang and the MSM to do that?

  36. Zookeeper says:

#29 – Me too, Wayne. I almost sprained my neck looking around after he said that. What the hell is festering in his brain?

  37. wisedup says:

Thanks zookeeper, I just read the truth from Cindy Sheehan,it’s beyond sad.

  38. Clif says:

    For those interested

  40. Citizen USA says:

So let’s See…Addicted to Foreign Oil. Sure George.

And NOW the USA is going to switch to Twigs and Grass from the Heartland for ethanol. Hmmm.

That’s Odd though… Seeing as how the USA just invaded and occupied the richest OIL reserves on earth…

… using the GI’s from that very same heartland…. Hmmm

One Citizen MUST wonder… China? India? Who? Where? When?

What? Is going to happen to all of that “Not-So-Foreign-Oil”… now that Iraq was colonized like a 51st state?

… Protected with Our Very Own National Guard and Reserves.

This is Odd, Odd INDEED. One of the Latest Republican Meta-Cons… getting a roll-out during “The State of the Union Address.”

Send Your Boys and Girls to Die for Mid-East Oil… for Cheney and Exxon and Enron…Yet don’t expect any of it at home…

Instead, pay the price of New Technology innovations… and Let Cheney and Exxon and Enron OWN the World’s Oil… and FUEL their ongoing Industrial Revolution of China and India.

It seems, The State of the Union is of One UNDER SIEGE… One of Immense CONS against the Citizenry.

God Bless our Over-Deployed and Under-Supplied Troops. Bring them Home NOW. The Nation NEEDS its National Guard.

  41. Mark says:

#26 whaever his proposals we do know from experience that the opposite will occur and if anything he proposed does actually occur it will be an unmitigated disaster.

I can’t believe he touts the strong economy when Kraft and Ford announce within a week of each other massive job cuts. GM is in the tank and teetering on the abys, Delta Airlines is going the same direction. These are large companies that are dying right before our eyes and we hear that the economy is strong?

I can not honestly believe that the President of the United States was actually talking about human/animal hybrids. That has to have been a liberal plot by the Daily show or Colbert Report spliced in to make the dear leader look bad. The mere mention of this should send shudders up and down our collective spines. Reminds me of the days when Reagan tried to get Gorbachev to agree to unite with the US to fend off alien invasions. My good, who are we putting in charge of our country.

  42. Solitaire says:

In the State of the union speech last night, Bush directly threatened Iran, under the radar of the American Public. The average American does not know that Iran already has elections. So when he turned to the screen and directly addressed the Iranian people and told them things will be much better when they have a Democracy, that was a direct threat to them to overturn the election they already had. They elected a man Bush doesn’t like, who says threatening things to Israel and bashes Bush. You can bet they were screaming loudly after that one.
Bush is a snake in the grass.

  43. Pete Bogs says:

since Democrats tape their rebuttal before the SOTU, they can’t react to specifics of the speech… taking notes and looking at the official transcript, you can easily shoot holes through a lot of what Bush said… and point out the many things he failed to say…

    http://blogdebogs.blogspot.com/2006/02/state-of-delusion.html

  44. Ron says:

Joseph Stalin wanted a hybrid ’super warrior’ of half man, half ape kind of being. Ergo, it makes sense that Bush talks about something of the same sort. Madmen think alike.

  45. JIMBO says:

I’d like to know what Chrissy Matthews, Bush’s asslicking pundit has to say about the speech. I’m sure he felt it was like getting an orgasm.

  46. Zookeeper says:

$43 – I thought the Democratic follow-up was lame, lame, lame.

  47. kindness says:

I’ll bet Chris M loves his “tossed salads”. Guess he is more like Bill O’Liely than I had imagined.

  48. big papa says:

Here’s a copy of an e-mail I just sent to several Senators on ussenate.com…

I got sooo damned frustrated calling on my cell phone to lodge a complaint against the Capitol Hill Police officer who arrested and assaulted Sheehan last night…

The Secret Service guy I got when I called was downright nasty, wouldn’t give his name…

Folks these are the “civil servants” to whom our hard earned tax dollars are going…

    I’m fu*king livid!!!!

    Dear Senator ,

I cannot express to you how deeply angered and violated I feel as a taxpaying citizen of this so-called democracy, to know that citizens can be so humiliated and assaulted by the Capitol Hill Police as Cindy Sheehan was. Have we no sense of honor and decency in our halls of government? Mrs. Sheehan has made the ultimate sacrifice a mother can make for her country (the death of her only son in service to this nation), and our government treats her like an enemy! What kind of people are we? How cruel and ungrateful our government can be to those who sacrifice daily for it.

I attempted to register a protest complaint with the Capitol Hill Police against the officer (Mike Weigt, not sure about his last name spelling) who arrested Mrs. Sheehan but was given a bogus number (that stays busy) 202-228-2200. I called the Secret Service and the man on the phone not only refused to give me his name but was so rude…well I’ll say this, i ashamed of the people who run this country.

What happened to Cindy Sheehan should NOT be allowed to go unpunished (and publicly so that the people know that there are those in Washington who respect the common citizen’s right to free speech). I sincerely hope that you will be one of the leading voices to bring this intolerable situation to a successful conclusion.

  49. JIMBO says:

    BIG PAPA, YOU ROCK! :)

  50. Raising Kaine » Raising America says:

[...] 57% of Americans believe that the nation is on the wrong course. Fewer than 40% of Americans approve of the job that Mr. Bush is doing as President. At this watershed moment of his presidency, with midterm elections ten months away, Mr. Bush last night delivered his most flacid State of the Union address. [...]

  51. Solitaire says:

Inspired by Big Papa, sent the same approx. message to my Senator.

  52. Wayne A. Schneider says:

Way to go, big papa. Way to go! Thanks for trying to get info from the Secret Service. You do realize, of course, that you’re now on (another) list of “enemies”. It won’t matter to them that you were trying to uphold the law and protect civil liberties. I suggest you write to them and try to give them the exact time (as close as possible) that you called them. They should have a tape of the call. You can ask the head of the Secret Service (Ron Butterfield?) what’s up with the very uncivil service their employees provided someone who pays their salary. Give them as much information about the call as you can considering the agent refused to give you his name.

Being a cop doesn’t automatically make you right, just like being president doesn’t make you automatically right.

  53. IraqVet says:

    Way to go! BP…

The BUSH lies continue and the DEMS are finally coming to life…

But, they have a long way to go, and it is BLOGS like TP and others that will lead the way to get this BASTARD IMPEACHED and all of his cronies jailed for their crimes…

Cindy Sheehan has just been violated and if THIS does not show that the soldiers lives aren’t wor th a shit to this administration, then NOTHING WILL!!!

I am sure that Casey is turning over in his grave and MANY other soldiers are pissed off that this has happened…WATCH for a revolt in the military ranks soon…

50,000 soldiers are sick and tired of BUSH, I guess the neo-cons have NOTHING to say about the indentured servitude imposed by BUSH???

  54. Dartanyon says:

Like duh? 6 years of listening to Little Boots lie and what did they expect? The American people have reached bowel tolerance with Bush and his horrible poll numbers reflect this.

  55. big papa says:

Thanks for trying to get info from the Secret Service. You do realize, of course, that you’re now on (another) list of “enemies”.

Comment by Wayne A. Schneider #52

    Wayne,

    It’d be an honor…

    …maybe I’ll get REAL lucky and…

…they’ll send IRI to bring me in for ???ing…

  56. Wayne A. Schneider says:

    #55 LOL. Let’s just hope you’re a better-armed man than I.

Every night around 11 PM, for reasons I have yet to understand, our phone lets out a little short ring-type chirp. There is no kind of alarm clock on it, and I didn’t even bother to reset the clock after the last power outage, and the chirp still happens at the same time. Jane and I just assume it’s the government tapping us. Whenever we hear it, we just shout back “Fvck you, Gonzalez!” (It used to be, “Fvck you, Ashcroft!”)

  57. David says:

THE HUMAN-ANIMAL HYBRIDS ARE TAKING OVER THE WORLD!!!!!

My automatic reaction to that part of the SOTU: WTF?! Guess they had to fill/kill 36 minutes somehow…

  58. Gerry Long says:

Hey, give poor Boy George a break. The stupid little man has to be spokesman for the BIG CHARADE:

If the rest of us would stop giving credence to his “War On Terrorism”, recognize it as a scam which is creating ten times as many terrorists as we had ever imagined, and recognize that the American Military/Industrial Complex foments more terrorism than Bin Laden, perhaps we could shut down 90% of our military bases around the world, and start regaining the respect this country once had from the rest of the world.
