VIDEO: Failure of Social Security Privatization Gets Standing Ovation»

When President Bush first launched his campaign to privatize Social Security last year, just 39 percent of Americans approved of how he was handling the issue. A year later, that number has dropped to 35 percent.

The sentiments of the majority of Americans was voiced last night when President Bush brought up his privatization plans. Bush’s statement that “Congress did not act last year on my proposal” was met with rousing, unexpected applause that clearly unnerved Bush. Watch it:

Does anyone know where the idea of human-animal hybrids came from other than the obvious myths and fictional entertainment? Is someone really trying to do this? Or was it some type of emotional manipulation. I would really like to know if any Right Wingers know about it, I don’t think even crazy Coulter has ever mentioned it in her right to life emotionally charged drama.

  2. Zookeeper Says:

Saw that last night. Dems grew a pair for a few minutes. Brought a tear my eye…

  3. Spudge_Boy Says:

    “human-anmial hybrids”

Is someone trying to make talking donkeys, centaurs or pegasi?

  4. RunningDogLackey Says:

Human-animal hybrids. “Are we not MEN?”

  5. Grand Moff Texan Says:

    “Are we not MEN?”

    We are BEVO.

    Sorry, had to do it.

  6. Ancient Purple Says:

Damn. That was a fine video to watch. Bush all but blew a gasket.

Couldn’t have happened to a finer president.

This is actually becoming quite commonplace. Mouse/Human embryos are used in research quite often to test drugs and how diseases progress. A mouse with human brain characteristics are better suited to track Alzheimers progression and/or treatment than a just a mouse brain.

The ethical ramifications of hybridizing humans with any other animal is quite disturbing. Where does it stop? When will we see athletes with gorilla genes to increase their strength? Dolphins with human genes to smarten them for military operations… or humans with dolphin genes to help be better Navy SEALS and hold their breath longer?

You laugh but do honestly think “they” will ever be happy with just using mice for Alzheimers testing…

  8. Kezaro Says:

Get the video up of nobody applauding when Bush mentioned earmark reform.

  9. Scat Says:

Here’s an article about a monkey that has been hybridized with human brain cells…

  11. I-RIGHT-I Says:

The Democratic Party’s one and only shining moment last night. It was great to watch.

    Comment by Wayne A. Schneider

If that’s what you call a shining moment for the Donks then you are even more perverse than I first imagined.

I saw it on a re-run and would say that this sarcastic democrat response over Congress’ failure to address Social Security entitlements (that will one day doom the Union), can only reinforce their image as the Party of sneering disrespect, and hate. This is how The Filthy Left will “confront the great issues before us”, and will “act in a spirit of goodwill and respect for one another.”???

Then entire country (except for me and a few of my global capitalist business associates) saw Hillary for the feckless partisan wretch that she is and right then and there determined that the woman will never set foot in the White House again. The Donks are insane with rage, contempt and envy. 06 and 08 will see the end of the Democratic Party as we know it unless Clinton, Kennedy, Pelosi, Boxer, Dean, Kerry and a host of other “leaders” of the party all commit mass suicide after losing the elections.

  12. Brian Smith Says:

Nothing wrong with chimeras - just because you go “Eewww!” at the idea, doesn’t make it inherently wrong. If there’s any species who’s genes we have a right to diddle with, surely it’s our own?

Of course, human nature being what it is, nobody can be trusted to do this without *extensive* oversight and ethical checks. I’d support doing this for health reasons (i.e you can create a child with a genetic tendency to be healthier and stronger than we are now), but that’d be about all, I think.

  13. beep52 Says:

Nice moment, but Bush is right in that the problem is not going away.

  14. Democrat Soldier Says:

#8 - Actually, they’re planning on introducing the genes for “honesty” and “integrity” back into the Reppublican party.

I think they’re also experimenting with adding “ethics”, “fiscal responsibility” and “taking responsibility for your actions” back into the Republicans.

Because it’s been so long since the ‘Phants have expressed these traits, the scientists are not expecting much in the way of success. I believe it was the Abramoff like sick-o-phants who were instrumental in removing the above listed traits from the Phant gene pool.

  15. Jane E. Schneider Says:

Well, IRI, if anyone’s a hate specialist, it’s you. By the way, did you notice John McCain’s sarcastic applause when Bush mentioned earmarks? Gee, you must really hate McCain, too.

  16. IraqVet Says:

Does ANTONE really give a damn about I-Wrong???

I mean a coward and spineless person that he is, along with the biased and racist posture only leads me to believe that he/she/it is just as dillusional as BUSH…

Oh well, I am glad that BUSH got b*tch slapped on national TV…But, I am equally impressed that many DEMS are now fighting instead of waiting for the winds to blow them in the right direction…

50,000 soldiers READY to leave this illegal war and BUSH imposes indefinite indentured servitude to MAKE them stay…Highest number of consciencious objectors, AWOL, and DESERTION rates in history!!! And someone said it was an ALL VOLUNTEER Army???

    What an IDIOT!!!

  17. IraqVet Says:

    Dayum, meant ANYONE!

  18. Southwest Bob Says:

Yes, bush is right. But congress and the administration, in order to deal with it, have to admit they are the main source of the problem. SSI income has exceeded expenses for many, many years. Yet, congress and presidents eagerly spent it, with the promise to “replace it.” Okay, it’s time to replace it rather than eliminating or reducing promised benefits. This has never been a complex problem, just a problem of selfishness by the elected folks who spend our money on our behalf.

  19. Democrat Soldier Says:

#16 - Don’t listen to the invective that “Right between the I’s” spews. He’s been given his talking points by his neo-con leaders, and anyone who dares to correct his world view must be wrong.

It’s very comforting to the trolls to be able to parrot a talking point and not have to engage the brain cells. It also makes “Ditto!” much easer to roll of the tongue without requiring a side-trip to thought or reason.

Eventually, their rose colored glasses will fog up from the amount of hot air the Phants are blowing, and they’ll either run head long into the storm of reason or eventually fall over the edge of the cliff that awaits all lemmings.

  20. Pete Bogs Says:

yes, the Dems showed their sacks for a bit, there… certainly was a nice counterpoint to the Republicants’ insane cheering about permanent tax cuts… it just takes the mention of money to get them excited…

  21. Jane E. Schneider Says:

Don’t worry, Democrat Soldier, IRI and I have debated, usually fairly civilly, often. I’m through with him/it for now.

  22. Clif Says:

#14 his solution was like most other reforms of large government programs not a solution but a vehicle to benefit a wealthy group of bush constituents, not the American public. Privatising social security does wall street and the investment mangers good, a steady flow of cash, no linger have to worry about having the flow slowed during a downturn because there can’t be a downturn if the working public must put money in the stock market. There is still the problem of stagnation which will hurt the investor who doesn’t earn any profit but still pays the fees to the portfolio manager’s. Kinda like the stock market of late, And with the likes of tyco, enron, worldcom, not to mention the airline industry and GM’s possible bankrupcy the stock market is not the safest place to put money if you do not have any way to make up the losses. There are better ways to resolve the problems than to gut the core and push people into a system that is not a true insurance or retirement policy.

  23. kindness Says:

Irighti you cut and pasted that post from one of the earlier threads. Lazy bastard! Do you want me to cut and past all the lambasting you got on that thread too?

  24. single tear Says:

    BackOnTopic:
If the Dems were able to stand togethere last night and agree-
why not a platform they can all agree with and have the balls to carry it out like a political party!
Cut the ties to corporations and represent the people,
    not communism,
    but capitilism,
    with corporations having NO POWER!!!
then any business can succeed not just the Good Ole Boys

…if there are dems who are against the platform,
    boot ‘em out
…everyone has their own opinions and beliefs, but in this two party system we need a common cause to stand up for…its like cowboys & indians, one or the other, and its time the indians stood up and took control!!!

  25. Lewis Carroll Says:

Actually, did I miss it, or did Bush not actually offer *a proposal* on SS?

  26. Zookeeper Says:

#25 - You’re right, it seemed to be a secret plan.

  27. zerohundred Says:

They actually included it in the official transcript.

    Surprising…

  28. Joe Sixpack Says:

Jane #21, like you, I also have debated with IRI, one redneck winger to another. As a half-baked conservative dipstick myself, I rather enjoy his blasts.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but do you think junior had IRI in mind when he was talking about needing to shut down the human/animal cloning experiments. I’m thinking of an I-RIGHT-I/baboon kind of thing. How about you?

  29. Innocent Lite Says:

This will make for a great ad to attack Democrats as thoughtless partisans interested only in opposing President Bush. The American people want a solution - do liberals have one? No. That will bring more defeat at the polls.

Special thanks to Cindy Sheehan for exposing you all as the treasonous scum you really are.

Anyone catch Justice Alito in his robe? lol!

  30. Noam Sane Says:

The Social Security issue was resolved in the 70s when taxes were raised to keep it solvent. Unfortunately, it’s always been promoted as part of the general budget revenue by administrations of both parties, because things look rosier that way.

That’s fine if you’re running a surplus, as we were when this assclown took office. When he raided the treasury after he was “elected”, it was a redistribution of of much of that tax money - the lion’s share paid by working people - from the poor and middle-class, to the rich.

    You could look it up.

  31. MNPundit Says:

I can’t watch this video. I’d like to, but all I get is a big fat question mark with quick time.

Can I actually download this video? Is it available for windows media? How can I see this thing? Is it a bandwith issue?

  32. thot's Says:

The biggest entitlement isnt Medicaid,Medicare,Welfare, food stamps…Its the drain on the Taxpayer for supporting the president ,vpresident, cabinets, congress, senate. That is the biggest drain on Taxpayers. Lets cut W salary to o.oo since he has free housing including private chefs. Life time pension, medical, dental need I say more and I’m sick of supporting these Facists.

  33. Weaseldog Says:

The purpose of social security reform is to prop up the stock market so savvy investors can sell and get out.

who actually believes the market will retain value once the boomers start cashing out their pension, mutual funds and 401Ks?

Once the great cashout begins, the Plunge Protection Team won’t be able to keep up the loud gush of money leaving the system. The market will collapse to virtually nothing, leaving all of those retired investors broke.

The far right knows this is a racket and they want theirs, while there is still seomthing to loot. Privatizing Social Security will create a stock market bubble that will make a number of savvy investors very wealthy. All they have to do is sell everything before the bubble deflates.

Social Security as we know it is doomed and privatized social security is doomed also. It’s just another way for institutions to steal the funds you think are going toward retirement.

Best savings plan you can have is to pay off your house and bring your bills to a minimum. Anything beyond that is gambling with a losing hand.

  34. JK47 Says:

“The Donks are insane with rage, contempt and envy.”

Sounds like the Republican party, circa 1998. Worked out okay for you guys. I think the “Donks” need MORE rage and contempt, not less. I’m gonna start by voicing my contempt for you.

  38. Jane E. Schneider Says:

Good one, Joe! Actually, I think IRI is the 4-assed monkey on South Park.

Where’ve ya been, Joe, we’ve missed your “correct me if I’m wrong” lines? Good to hear from you again.

  39. For Truth Says:

    Thanks scat on the explanation.

  40. Dr. Squid Says:

can only reinforce their image as the Party of sneering disrespect, and hate. This is how The Filthy Left

Oh, the irony. Too bad conservatives aren’t wired for it.

  41. RunningDogLackey Says:

As I recall, about 80% of Americans remained seated back when Bush was pushing for SS privatization.

It didn’t die because Congress refused to act. It died because no one wanted it.

  42. For Truth Says:

You really want a one-party country IRI?

  43. DanM Says:

Usually when people do this in a Bush speech, he has them arrested.

  44. AvengingAngel Says:

Bush getting rolled on Social Security was clearly one of the “Top 10 State of the Union Highlights.”

  45. Gary Kleppe Says:

This will make for a great ad to attack Democrats as thoughtless partisans interested only in opposing President Bush. The American people want a solution - do liberals have one?

First we have to agree on the problem, chuckles.

Then any proposed solutions have to be examined to see if they actually do anything to make the situation better. Bush’s, of course, only makes it worse.

No. That will bring more defeat at the polls.

Another right-winger pretending that the 2004 elections weren’t stolen.

Special thanks to Cindy Sheehan for exposing you all as the treasonous scum you really are.

It isn’t treason to point out the troops who are dying in Bush’s little crusade.

Anyone catch Justice Alito in his robe? lol!

    Whatever turns you on.

  47. Joe Sixpack Says:

Well, Jane, I been hanging out, mostly. Sopping up the brew down at the bar and trying to smooch up on a few of the ugly scuzzies down there.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but with Bush’s polls in the tank, the country going to hell, and an impending democratic takeover in November if the “donks” play their cards right, I was as scarce as the other demoralized trolls around here. Junior’s speech has heartened me again, however, along with IRI, mighty aphrodite, and the others. So here I am helping them out with the real facts and backing up their attacks on you lefties.

  48. Concerned Conservative Says:

I don’t understand why celebrating the lack of progress on SS seems to tickle TP’s fancy. Are you guys rooting for the SS system to implode? Because that’s what’s going to happen if nothing is done.

And don’t think that raising taxes is going to fly as a solution.

  49. dlet Says:

Yes it was nice to see the Dems do something as one yesterday. My disappoint is that they only can seem to do it when they know the whole country is watching. I mean if you can’t come together as a party to prevent a man such as Alito from becoming a SCJ then a little clapping in unison on National TV means about as much to me as promise unfullfilled and that is to properly represent the people that have elected them.

  50. Democrat Soldier Says:

#50 - How many times in the past has SS paied out more than it’s taken in? (Hint: more than 10 times)

Don’t forget, when SS starts to pay out more than it takes in, it’ll be taking in about 80 cents for every dollar that is paid out. Currently, our federal budget takes in about 60 cents for every dollar it pays out. So, in 2030, SS will be on a better financial foundation than our current federal budget. Pardon me for not crying a river over your alarmist attitude.

Also, with the number of people that Pres. Bush plans on getting killed over the next few wars, we won’t have to worry about SS going under any time soon.

How about we reduce the bloated Federal Budget before we start to dismantle Social Security, huh? Too much to ask from the so-called “fiscally conservative” Republicans in charge of the massive federal budget, huh???

  51. TJM Says:

There’s nothing wrong with Social Security and hasn’t been since Reagan’s Congress fixed it by raising the tax rate in ‘83. The problem is with Medicare and the continual rise in health care costs. The Part D legislation was vote pandering at its worst and will contribute more over time to the potential bankruptcy of the nation than Social Security ever will.
The use of SS money as part of the general treasury by itself is not a problem, though. It’s the fact that spending has gotten out of control.GWB has the highest growth in spending of any president (including LBJ) and the greatest growth in government ever.
The economy has grown because Keynes was correct, deficit spending can drive economic growth, just not the sort of sustainable growth one would prefer.
I do personally like the tax cuts, though.Very nice.

  52. Vermonter Says:

Anybody see CBS’s John Roberts’ ridiculous take on the Dems standing O for failing to “reform” SS?

Instead of what any normal person would have said about the Dems witty and spirited interuption, he instead said that Bush was successful in baiting the Dems to applaud…

Oh really, John? That’s how you saw it?

Hope you like your new gig at CNN:

    Comment by Wayne A. Schneider — February 1, 2006 @ 1:42 pm

I think that was the only part of his entire speech that I enjoyed :). The rest of the time I just kept calling him a liar, and the Dems pathetic…

  58. Phoenix Woman Says:

PZ Myers over at Pharyngula has deciphered the “man-animal” comment as Bush’s speaking in code to his Fundie base, and hoping that we don’t figure it out. Just as he used “Dred Scott” as code for “I will outlaw abortion or at least make it difficult to legally obtain”, the “man-animal” business is about banning stem cell and other kinds of genetic research.

  59. Democrat Soldier Says:

#58 - “Right between the I’s”, I guess it depends on if you hollered or sighed when you has some Black in you.

My pardon, I guess when people start bringing up sexual references in humor, I think about how much Government in general screws Americans, and how much Pres. Bush in specific has screwed the American public.

Don’t worry, “Right between the I’s”, I won’t tell your girlfriend that you had some Black in you. I’m sure that Lewis Black wasn’t proud of that moment either.

    (Tongue in cheek.)

Back on topic: when Pres. Bush suggested his social experiment of “private accounts” to ‘fix’ Social Security, I’m sure it was a wet dream to the stock market to get their hands on the fees for handling all that money. While it sounded good in theory, they never once talked about what would happen if your investments should fail and you loose the money. They also conveniently didn’t talk much about how much they’d tax the proceeds if you’re investments panned out. How convenient for them!

  60. Weaseldog Says:

Taking the income cap off of social security will fix it.

But that would inconvience the ultra rich, so it won’t happen.

As the purpose of government is to take money from the poor and give it to the wealthy, such a notion won’t fly in Congress.

  61. Str8UpNoChaser Says:

    # 58

    Stop insulting black people.

  62. Chip, IRI's significant other Says:

Take your butt plug out IRI, I’m home. It’s your 10″ Chippy. Naughty rightwing boy!

  63. Innocent Lite Says:

I wonder why Democrats couldn’t block Alito when Bush’s approval rating is just 39%? That should worry the left.

  64. Phoenix Woman Says:

Bush and his Republican cronies want to privatize Social Security so his brokerage-firm buddies can make big bucks off of it. However, as has been the case in every single pension privatization worldwide, the overhead costs under privatization are much greater than those under the old government programs, and definitely greater than that of the US’ Social Security. Right now, the UK’s pension program has 14% of its funds eaten up in overhead costs; Social Security, by contrast, has overhead costs of around 1%, if not less.

  65. Jane E. Schneider Says:

And, IRI, don’t bother trying to insult Wayne, either. You know as well as I do (and as everyone here does) that he can “run rings around you logically” (that’s for you Python fans!)

  66. unbelievable Says:

My last girlfriend said I must have some Black in me. Does that count?

    Comment by I-RIGHT-I — February 1, 2006 @ 3:14 pm

There’s a class they teach in high school called ESOL (English for Speakers of other languages). There are four students in the fourth period class who are ethnic (two Mexican, one Filipino and one Africa). Not only were all four of these kids born here, but so were all of their parents and two of the kids grandparents. They each speak English with no accent and are all doing well in school.

Their teacher, however was born in French and speaks English as her second language. She is teaching ESOL to second and third generation Americans. Tell me that the racism in this country doesn’t run as deep as IRI portrays…

You have the exact same type of DNA as every other person in the world. Why you judge people for their skin color is really assinine. Grow up.

  67. Democrat Soldier Says:

#62 - Sounds like Republican logic: give tax breaks to the rich people who don’t need them and cut funding of programs for the poor who depend on them.

I guess Pres. Bush and his sick-o-pahnts don’t care or think about the “lower 99%” of Americans. If we aren’t cleaning up the trash (from the bins in his house, or his legislative agenda nightmares, or his ‘foreign policy’ of ‘war for oil/profit’) then the average American citizen doesn’t enter his thoughts at all.

  68. Joe Sixpack Says:

Well, as for junior’s speech last night, I think the two new supreme court justices pretty well got their marching orders: from abortion to cloning.

Correct me if I’m wrong, unbelievable, but the part I liked the best was when he called on the congress to not be so bitterly divided by offering an olive branch, then turning right around and attacking the dems for judging in “hindsight” and “second-guessing” the Iraqi War.

Oh, and the white dress Laura had on. I guessed yesterday that she’d be wearing white panties and it stands to reason, she would have had on matching panties.

    I feel very vindicated.

Good point. I have to admit I changed the channle a couple of times trying to catch teh weather, so I missed that one. But, thanks for the recap. The hypocracy of the neocons is certainly appalling. Well to us liberals, I’m sure you conservatives just ignore it :)

  71. Joe Sixpack Says:

Unbelievable #70, in all fairness to I-RIGHT-I’s remark about being half black—-I doubt it was about racism this time.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but as a rightwing, conservative redneck dipstick myself, I know what he was referring to and it ain’t DNA. It has the size of his—–feet—–if you know what I mean.

Well, you know what they say Joe, men who are obsessed with guns are just trying to make up for a deficiency…

But the remark was still a stereo-type and it falls into the general catagory of racism when spoken by IRI. But I get your need to defend your fellow neocons and all…

She just meant your were probably sodomized by a black man. Were you walking strangely at the time? Is this the root of your bitterness? Because, you know, interacial dating AND homosexuality are a lot more accepted than they used to be. Might as well come out of both closets at once.

  77. TJM Says:

Weasel dog(?),how much money do you estimate would be raised by removing the wage cap? If you don’t know how to estimate that #,then you don’t know if that would “fix” the problem. While I don’t think SS is the problem,Medicare most definitely is and no amount of juggling payroll deductions will fix it.

Entitlements won’t be a problem for another 40 years and at that time, the shortfall is only going to be a few billion (which is chump change for a government program of this scale). It can be taken care of relatively easily in a number of ways without privatizing, which is risky at best. My father, who is a conservative economist who has studied the social security system in great detail, thinks that Bush’s “answer” would create far more problems within the system than it would help solve. I trust him much more than I do a president who has a problem understanding how the system was designed to work in the first place.

In liberal California, a gang of dred-locked eco-terrorists have been arrested for engineering Hurricane Katrina as part of their mad plot to advance radical environmentalism. And if you see a super-intelligent gorilla, don’t make eye contact.

Debating IRI is a pointless activity - he has no facts, refuses to accept facts, has no informed opinion, and is incapable of appreciating informed opinion. Why bother? He’s the net equivalent of one of those guys sitting in a dunking tank. He was made to be humilated, and he’s too stupid to realize how humiliating his situation is anyways, so might as well lob a few fastballs for the kicks.

Sadly, this describes most conservative bloggers and punditry. Pretending they are worthy of debate may be nice practice for serious discussions later, but just mocking them is ultimately more fun and helps reduce whatever air of legitmacy they claim for themselves.

Absolutely pumpkin, as a partisan your world is definitely about you, as are your efforts to entertain yourself. I won’t disagree with that. But it doesn’t make you ‘funny’, or a good judge of ‘funny’ pumpkin just because you laugh at yourself ;) And when people laugh at you dear, it doesn’t always mean your funny either, sometimes laughter comes from embarrassment at the expense of others.

  109. Arne Langsetmo Says:

Does anyone know where the idea of human-animal hybrids came from other than the obvious myths and fictional entertainment? Is someone really trying to do this? Or was it some type of emotional manipulation?

Human/animal hybrid cell lines have been in existence for decades (IIRC mouse-human hybrids was one of the first). These are hardly “stem cells”, much less capable of growing into any chimerical beastie on their own. So, yes, it’s pandering to the red-meat base. But either profoundly dishonest or monumentally iggnerant (let’s not leave out the possibility of both).

Such hybrid lines are the staple of lots of basic biochemical and genetic work. They’re “immortalized” cell lines, and never grow to be anything other than more single cells, much like the workhorse HeLa cell line (one of the first and most famous such cell lines derived from a cancer in patient “Helen Lane”). They’re unregulated, unorganized single-cell clutures, and the nearest thing they’d be to being “human” would be to be a human cancer; hardly something deserving of the sanctity of life, unless you’re such a fundy nutzoid that you think that teratomas with “hair” and “teeth” (look up “teratoma” for more) are worthy of “Constitutional protection” even if they disable or kill the host patient….

In short, it’s a freakin’ unscientific crock put in to appeal to the Luddite/fundy crowd. Let them all die horrible and painful deaths from preventable and treatable cancer, I say … they deserve to walk the walk if they’re going to give such jive talk.

FWIW, there are actual “chimeric” creatures that have been produced with cells from different species, but in such cases, each cell is not a hybrid, but rather derived from one or the other. But this is more like heterografts than it is any real “new” creature; even if there were offspring (not particularly likely), they’d be one species or the other.

For an example of someone who probably should know better, but who confuses chimeras with hybrids, see here.

Here’s one of the wackier loons out there, and you can see where the objections to this research are coming from. Sadly enough, even such as Nicholas Wade (formerly of Science magazine, now presumably making big bicks from the NYT) offered up this nonsense>/a>:

Dr. Irving L. Weissman, an expert on stem cells at Stanford University, said that making mice with human cells could be “an enormously important experiment,” but if conducted carelessly could lead to outcomes that are “too horrible to contemplate.” He gave as an extreme example the possibility that a mouse making human sperm might accidentally be allowed to mate with a mouse that had made its eggs from human cells.

Not likely to happen unless you’re of the strange opinion that lots of unsanctioned reproductive activities takes place after dark in labs, and even if it did, there’s not a chance in hell that any such zygote would last even a couple of days (assuming that a pregancy is even possible, which is actually rather doubtful as well.

    Cheers,

Diverting Social Security payments into the stock market isn’t a fix. It’s a way to kill Social Security. It’s simply another way to cover up the actions of the Plunge Protection Team.

The Us Government will pay for Social Security the way it’s paying for everything, it will just deficit spend moeny it doesn’t have. If you look at government finance as a whole, the way you’re looking at social Security, you’ll declare the whole shebang as broken, and in need of fixing.

George W. Bush runs the risk of alienating the world’s biggest source of oil with his plan to end America’s “oil addiction”, Opec delegates, oil ministers, energy experts and even some environmentalists said yesterday.

The president’s plan to cut US consumption of Middle East oil by 75 per cent by 2025 was neither achievable nor prudent and could make investment in the industry more difficult, they said. Investment was the most critical factor in deciding whether there would be enough oil to meet future demand.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Americans may drive cars in two decades that operate on pollution-free hydrogen or fuel made from grass and wood chips, but it will not be enough to reduce significantly U.S. oil imports from the Middle East.

President George W. Bush told Congress on Tuesday that America was addicted to oil and needed to slash its Middle East crude purchases by 75 percent by 2025 by building vehicles that run on alternative fuels.

The big three U.S. automakers are each working on a hydrogen fuel cell prototype, but so far prices remain too high for commercial sale.

“But at a price range of $700,000 to $1 million, a lot of work needs to be done to get them to a price-point that’s feasible,” said Eron Shosteck, a spokeswoman for the Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers,

The stock market produces about 8-10% annual return over a 50 year period, which is MUCH better than the govt. can do.

As people get closer to retirement they would shift their retirement $ to more stable investments (like t-bills) to reduce their risk. For those that don’t feel confident in managing their $ themselves they can elect to have the Govt. manage it for them — like the current system.

“The officers made a good faith, but mistaken effort to enforce an old unwritten interpretation of the prohibitions about demonstrating in the Capitol,” Capitol Police Chief Terrance Gainer said in a statement late Wednesday.

Not to mention marching a Congressmens wife out with her.

How much experience do you have with this particular issue oh goddess of love? Is that what you do for a living, or is it just a hobby you have?

As for being a good shot, is that why so many of them shoot their wives, girlfriends and families? Almost half of the HALF MILLION homicides since 1997 have been committed by family members or spouses. Those guns of yours seem to do a lot more damage then the largely mythical terrorists you seem so frightened of.

Poor partisan brains seem to have so little perspective on the world, and yet so much blustering attitude.

It’s OK mighty - it’s clear that you’re scared of the terrorists - we get it sweetie. You’re a frightened old woman that wants to kill everyone who’s brown or darker just like your hubby I-RIGHT-I does. But that’s just old lady hysteria talking sweetums. Get a grip if you can - because you sound so silly that I’m starting to giggle every time I read the same little postings from you day in and day out.

I know you’re much more capable than you’re letting on - come on, let everyone see that you’re not just a wounded partisan. You’re a brave american under those quaking quilts, give us a whirl there old girl! Come out and be an american first, and a scared partisan second. We’d welcome you in a second!

I-R-I has got to be the most pathetic, sad person alive if she/he/it posts every day on a liberal blog just to piss people off. Extremely immature and just a waste of time. What a dumbass.

But isn’t your husband a Repugnicant like you? Oh… but your illegal pool boy - he muct be the liberal of whom you speak. Really, you can’t blame the poor guy for not being able to perform. It is YOU. Not many liberals are into necrophilia…

Honestly, time to go read a third grade history book. Our Founding Fathers were liberals. And they conceived the right to bear arms to protect the citizenry against tyranny, not figments of your imagination.

Besides, in what backwoods BFE do you live to have wolves scratching at your door at night? Don’t worry - they won’t eat carasses more than a couple days old. You’re safe. No need to have some testerone-laden imbicle shoot anything to save you. There are some things even a starving carnivore won’t touch.

    Yeah, at least… Incredible.

I have to agree with this comment, regarding the Democratic standing ovation at privatization’s failure:

“It can only reinforce their image as the Party of sneering disrespect, and hate.”

It will. It doesn’t matter that they are right. This was immature and politically bone-brained.
