Why does Ron Nessen’s name sound so familiar? Who did he used to be? Apparently yesterday must have been the first time he’d ever been to American Progress, or he certainly wouldn’t have been so dismissive.
#3,6,7 Didn’t he host Saturday Night Live once? I seem to remember that the White House wasn’t too pleased with him for doing it, either. (I may be totally confused on this one. Please excuse the brain fart if I am.)
You know you’re doing a good job when you piss-off the dinosaurs of your trade. They’re mad because you reported it all already before they even got a chance to think about it. Keep up the good work.
Ron Nessen is one of the desperate ones justifying their fading status, by putting down the opposition, as that is the only way to make the chimp-in-chief appear better than a slug.
Yes, Ron Nessen was a guest host on SNL. What happened was that Nessen happened to see the show and was amused by Chevy’s portrayal of Ford and by Buck Henry as Nessen. He ran into Al Franken when the latter was making a family visit in New Hampshire. Nessen was amused an asked for a copy of the tape. Apparently, he had trouble trying to improve Ford’s image. When Franken asked if he would be interested in being on the show, Nessen said yes, to Franken’s surprise.
After some negotiations with Lorne Michaels, Nessen hosted the show. After that, it was reported that Ford hated it and so did some in the administration and the snobbish Washington press. Some believed that the Nessen episode partially helped to destroy, Ford’s campaign.
Correction; Nessen asked an aide to get the tape for him. Not Franken. However, when Nessen agreed to do the show, the writers thought that this would be an opportunity to one up on him. and it resulted in the most raunchiest show ever. Nessen appeared in only one or two skits. The rest, though, involved a lot of raunchy humor. That was when Nessen was in trouble and SNL made him look as stupid as his boss.
3- According to one of the poster at the link on #4 Fords former press secretary reaching in order to make political point…
Maybe that’s why he sounds familiar.
Don’t get me wrong, I thought President Ford was a good guy. But I voted against him because he pardoned Nixon.
That is why Carter won. That and the thugs were still running the show. It came out during the campaign that Sec of State Kissinger had had agreements with S. Vietnam to get the US back in if the North over-ran them.
Thanks to Think Progress, I was able to sit and listen to music while simultaneously witnessing the best live blogging I have ever seen done. Guess you are making the media nervous.
Ironically, I just read this in Al Franken’s book “Rush Limbaugh is a Big, Fat Idiot and Other Observations”. Al was a new writer for SNL (one month old). He was traveling with his brother on the press bus during the RNC election campaign when he met up briefly with Nessen. Good ol Al. His last book rocked.
I got the Ron Nessen story off an old book I still own,”Saturday Night”,which was about the history of SNL.
There was even a picture of Nessen when he had hair. Weird
that he looks like something between G. Gordon Liddy and former wrestler Superstar Billy Graham.
Keep up the good work! Way to go! Last night was great atho’ the radio kept zoning out maybe because W was duller than a log.

February 1st, 2006 at 1:51 pmRon Nessen has been many things, but he is probably most famous for having been former President Gerald Ford’s Press Secretary.
February 1st, 2006 at 1:52 pmThanks, peachkfc, I thought that he was a press secretary, but couldn’t remember for which president.

Think-tank envy.
February 1st, 2006 at 4:17 pmGet this, before he worked for Ford, Ron Nessen was a correspondent reporter for NBC News. How ironic.
