I think Toles should have mentioned that the intent of the cartoon was to acurately portray the Secretary of Defense as a callous & uncaring numbskull.
It seems that the Joint Chiefs need the 2×4 treatment to get the drift of a joke.
I think Toles should have mentioned that the intent of the cartoon was to acurately portray the Secretary of Defense as a callous & uncaring numbskull.
Yeah, he took the Keith Olberman Apology Hall of Fame route. He should have said: “This cartoon is not an attack on our brave soldiers or on their service. It’s an attack on the incompetence of the military who’s failures have gotten our men and women killed and maimed. If the joint Chiefs see it that way then they need to go to Iraq to see the reality of what our troops face.”
Is it that friggin’ hard to slam it in their faces?
Joint Chiefs of Staff: Protecting us from rabid (liberal – need I be specific) political cartoonists everywhere!
Thanks, Joints! You’re doing a heckuva job.
Which one of you is in charge of making sure our guys don’t get their arms and legs blown off!?!?!?
At what point of the tragedy is it ok to ridicule it’s leaders ? What if this came out back in, when did the war start again?, Oh yeah back in 03 ? Is it tendentious? Let’s qualify it as hateful and put in with the blogers and letters to the editor. i think he is challenging the editors at the Post don’t you? It’s no more uglier than the way Rush Limbaugh or any other conservative uses the Military.
As a retired Military officer I am shocked that the Joint Chiefs entered into this fray this way and I agree Mr Toles should not have apologized in anyway. It is Mr Rumsfelds attitude that the JCS should be holding accountable. His total dismissal of the two separate reports (one DOD commissioned) questioning the current state of the military is clearly depicted in this cartoon. Mr Rumsfeld is right and the rest of the world is wrong and my Army is paying the price for it!!!
The mere fact that the representation could be made into an inference of what tragic circumstances face those who were injured, may be called into question. I, for one, see it both ways…
The JCS have more pressing matters to deal with, but let’s face it! The JCS stop being soldiers and become politicians, and so they DISREGARD the orders they imposed on the soldiers, because they do it from the comfort and safety of their deak…Then get on TV and say they agonize about the decision…
Mr. Toles drew a cartoon. Regardless of my beliefs about it, it was just that…A cartoon! It was a satyrical joke, and people are free to make a decision one way or another! That is one of the civil liberties that is being slowly degraded and diminished under BUSH…
In my opinion, the JCS has just shown that they are more concerned with storylines then actually standing up and calling this war for what it is. And for that reason, they are just as guilty as BUSH for allowing such a horrible plan to be put into action…
The next time you see a bearded panhandler on the street, just assume that he’s a “battle-hardened” trooper from some forgotten war. You’ll probably be correct.
Here’re Rumsfeld’s thoughts on battle casualties:
“. . . in my mind, I think of the number of people who are lost to traffic accidents in the United States in a given year. . . Now, if there were a daily report about the number of traffic deaths and if the television and the press were reporting these things and photographing them and the homicides . . .But what’s being reported is the fact — not the fact that the schools are open, not the fact that the hospitals and clinics are open, not the fact that Iraq’s got a stock exchange and that their oil and energy circumstances are proceeding apace . . . Those kinds of things get relatively modest attention, and what gets the attention is the death of Iraqis and the death of coalition forces.”
A more vivid example of the complete disdain this administration is the forceful eviction, in handcuffs, and arrest of the mother of one of the slain soldiers, Cindy Sheehan, from the SOTU. The claim, later denied, was that she threatened the life of the President–with a Tee-shirt. Where were the Joint Chiefs when the shoe was on the other foot?
The cartoon only goes to emphasise the disrespect that Rummy shows or the men and women under his command. Of course if T-Shirts can get you arrested, it’s only a matter of time before they come after cartoonists, humorists and anyone who dissagrees with the policies of the administration.
Oh, yeah, spreading freedom and democracy. Today, a plane fired several bullet rounds AND ROCKETS in a crowded shiite neighborhood in Baghdad. They killed a 20 years girl, and wounded her father, her little brother and some other familiars. A rocket did a hole in their roof of a yard of diameter… Making friends all the way.
What are the Joint Chiefs thinking by getting involved in this? Or is this simply another way to rile up the right against the left? The cartoon was in no way mocking the soldier, it was obviously mocking Rumsfeld and his complete arrogance, and cold-hearted dealing with the soldiers — and the JCs couldn’t see that? Or are they also feeling guilty at defending their incompetent civilian leaders and having to put the men under their command in untenable conditions?
There is a lot of responsibility and guilt to go around here. Toles simply called it as it is.
If Rummy and the JCs are offended, that’s their problem – and their own guilt.
Marie, IMO the generals are trying to support their boss and gain some points. That’s usually what generals do. These guys are not deep thinkers, these are men who know how to get ahead. They would only feel guilty if they didn’t behave this way. Case in point: Colin Powell, who has said that we can’t leave Iraq because we have so much invested (he’s now peddling stocks). The few thinking generals were purged long ago.
War Pigs all….keep moving your little plastic soldiers around your war-room maps with utter abandon….

WTF? And how many hours of electricity a day? Potable water? They sure as hell don’t have a stable and secure country.
February 2nd, 2006 at 1:09 pm#13 Yes and their “stock” exchange they buy and sell animals(live stock, not dead pieces of paper)
