The Seattle Times has run a Los Angeles Times story that breaks down the cost of the Iraq war at $100,000 per minute. Afghanistan’s current cost: $18,000 per minute.
OBL’s tape was released on 1-19-2006, providing he really is still living. He offers a truce. He says that prepartations are in place for another attack. They’ve done it once. They can do it again. Get ready; you better be ready, that’s for sure.
2-20-2006 is Preznits Day. I’d be ready by then.
I’d go for the truce option.
I’d spend the next 120 billion to make the truce.
A truce is all that is really necessary. Anybody want a truce? How about a truce?
If you’ve seen the cartoon of Mohammed the Prophet, I’d be spending the money on a truce.
Or, you can listen to the media produced government propaganda and believe that.
I believe OBL first. You can’t believe the US government propaganda produced via the MM.
Some members of Congress may feel guilty for having voted for authorization of the war but they can make up for it by cutting off funds for the war machine in Iraq. With all this money being spent in Iraq, this would seem to be more indicative of living in a dictatorship than in a democracy. The President can request the funding but Congress does not have to rubber stamp that request. It is long past due for Congress to start asserting itself by not giving Bush the money he wants to continue this insane occupation of Iraq, an occupation which is clearly against the wishes of the Iraqi people.
And with all those tax cuts for the rich — we should be well on our way to that republican fiscally responsible state. I suppose they can’t run on that platform any longer.
It seems all republicans stand for anymore is anti abortion. They need to be more in touch with Americans. They should definately scrap peace in the Middle East as they aren’t bright enough to listen to those who know best because of their paranoia. They aren’t very good at dealing with major issues here either.
And, BTW, the reason dems applauded when SS reform was mentioned was because we are HAPPY AS HELL he wasn’t able to screw that up too. Whatever he puts his hand on gets screwed. Just look at Medicare Part D – what a shambles. It was not in an effort to help anyone, it was an effort to give insurance companies more profits.
Thanks republicans, you only have one issue left and if you get your way, young girls will be turned into felons or die. You guys sure know how to make the world better — NOT!
We do we continue to link the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq? Doing so only allows Bush and others to claim that the war in Iraq has something to do with the GWT. The war in Afghanistan, despite Bush’s miss-mangement of it, did at the start have something to do with terrorism. The more we allow Bush and others to link the two, the harder it will be to really get people to think about the two wars as having nothing to do with each other. Iraq was Bush and the neo-cons tilting after windmills. They use the war in Afghanistan as cover for taking the country to war in Iraq on false pretenses. Everytime we allow Bush to link budget requests for military operations in Iraq to be linked to Afghanistan we allow Bush to get away with arguing that Iraq has something to do with fighting terrorism.
I find that expression “allow Bush” to be an interesting concept, idlecrank. To date, I don’t think the American public or Congress, or the courts, or any reasonable person has had any influence on Bush, with the notable exception of the evangelical christians, and calling them “reasonable” is a stretch. Not being of that particular sect, I have felt pretty helpless about what Bush does, and I don’t see any relief in the near future. If I could “allow” Bush anything at all, I would allow him a cell in a Federal Prison. But until Congress and/or the courts stand up to him, we are on the road to Fascism, and maybe he will allow us a freedom or two by the time he’s done, just for shit’s and giggles.
We’re nearing half a trillion dollars on these wars. Imagine what that kind of money would do for the human suffering taking place all around the world. These wars are going exactly as planned.
A thorough examination of US foreign policy over the last half century or longer will show that it has long been this country’s policy to control the Middle East. It has nothing to do with Republicans or Democrats. They’re all crooks and liars. If people would stop blindly pledging allegiance to a political party and every policy this country implements and start thinking for themselves, they might see it.
Stand up for what’s right… not what is being sold to the public as right. This country was founded on violence and has continued along a path of violence since its inception. Violence begets violence. The idea that we can win a ‘war on terror’ is the most absurd notion I’ve heard. Kill one and you make ten new enemies. We need to start respecting other peoples lives, cultures, and humanity in general and stop trying to be the world domineering police hell bent on forcing policies beneficial to the special interests that elect our ‘leaders’. If the people in power in this country truly cared about liberating and helping people, they would have done something long ago about the genocide taking place in Africa.
I don’t know about you all, but I’m tired of all the division in the world. We need true leaders that really care about uniting humanity and celebrating our diversity… instead of trying to instill fear and division into people for the pursuit of power and money.
On these wars, Mind Control? Iraq alone is nearly half a trillion and will easily break that in a year. Sophists like to play this burden off as totally expected and part of any war entails “costs.” The truth is these guys said we’d be there for less than 2 years and that oil revenue would pay for it. Read the quotes here on it, its ridiculous. Any time somebody says that nobody said this war would be cheap you can shove some of those quotes down their throats. http://www.house.gov/schakowsky/iraqquotes_web.htm
It seems all republicans stand for anymore is anti abortion.
I’m not even sure that is the case anymore. They lose a big hunk of red meat for the base if Roe is overturned. Right now, it just seems like fear is all they have to sell. Honesty, integrity, fiscal responsibility, state’s rights, and non-activist judges are certainly no longer part of any real GOP platform.
David, agreed. I see your point and as much as they continue to talk of the lack of direction the dems have, they seem to be merely deflecting the fact that they have nothing. They stand for nothing and care about nothing but making money, er, more money.
I can’t wait to hear their platform in the coming elections. What on earth can they say? I suppose we haven’t been attacked since 911, but then again, Osama (remember he ain’t dead) said he hadn’t even planned one. I guess that talking point is out the door. Sad when half our news comes from a guy they said they were going to “smoke out” years ago.
This war has already cost 1 trillion. Are you all forgetting that every federal agency under the sun has been raided and is now in the hole because King George took the money, pumped it into the war effort, and told no one?
dDHe took the 365 billion in the social security fund. He takes the excess of social secuiry every month.
The Pension Guaranty Trust Fund was raped of over 10 billion and is now over 10 billion in the hole.
He is silently borrowing 1 billion per day from the Chinese to run the country on.
Add all of these up, and guess what? It is well over 1 trillion.

Radical Islamic Fundementalists don’t realize it, but they are doing to us as we did to the Soviets: Make us spend all our money. The real ironic part though, is that our enemy isn’t spending a dime compared to us.
We will fall like the Soviet Union once China calls in the Bank Note!
We will be lucky if we even have bread lines for our children…
Looks like we need to cut some more social programs for the war machine. Onward Christian soldiers….
February 3rd, 2006 at 11:46 amI think I should send a check to help out, that clearly was not enough.
For real now, what misappropriation of funding, considering all the nickel and diming going on with helping American people.
February 3rd, 2006 at 11:48 amIf we give Bush one dollar every second, twenty four hours a day, we’ll have this paid for in 14,080 years.

February 3rd, 2006 at 12:06 pmIn the words of Mick Jagger and The Rolling Stones (no joke), “I’m Shattered”…
What in the world are we thinking?
It’s one thing to be dumb, but it’s quite another to be downright STOOOOOPID!
$440 billion dollars for a war that was ONLY supposed to cost $1 billion, then pay for itself?
…and the “geniuses” who came up with this brilliant idea have NO COMPUNCTION about asking for more…
Will somebody pleeease LIBERATE THE IDIOTIC MOFOING AMERICAN PEOPLE, before our children are all sold into slavery to pay the bill!
This is BORROWED money…
We’re borrowing money to support the ideas of the failed progeny of Texas (by way of Kennebunkport,ME) oil barons…
A “failed” businessman, “failed” academic, “failed” soldier, “failed” governor, and now “failed” president…
…but he’s a WASP male of privilege and wealth, and that makes all the difference in the world to you sick, dumb a*ss al Cracker Bush worshippers…
You people are my vote for the 9th wonder of the world…
February 3rd, 2006 at 12:07 pmTake that $440 billion and develop alternative fueled vehicles and transportation systems. Put them out of business. That’s your truce.
