Boehner: It’s All About The Hamiltons Baby!

Newly-elected House Majority Leader Rep. John Boehner’s (R-OH) close relationship with the private student loan company Sallie Mae came “under scrutiny by the news media and some lawmakers” during his race to replace Tom DeLay, and for good reason.

Sallie Mae and other loan companies have generously donated to him. In return, the former chairman of the House Committee on Education and the Workforce “shepherded through Congress student-loan legislation that will affect Sallie Mae’s bottom line and offered assurances that he will protect such lenders’ interests.” Here are some of the lowlights:

SALLIE MAE SHOWERS BOEHNER WITH CASH: PoliticalMoneyLine examined the 2003-2004 financial disclosure forms from Boehner’s Freedom Project PAC. They found that out of $572,719 of individual donations, those “affiliated with the private student-loan industry gave the PAC $220,020, including $52,670 from officers of Sallie Mae.” In a separate analysis, the Center for Responsive Politics discovered that Sallie Mae is Freedom Project’s biggest donor, with donations totaling $122,470 since 1989.

SALLIE MAE HOSTED BOEHNER FUNDRAISERS AND GOLF TRIPS: Beyond donations, Boehner has personal ties to the company. For example, a Sallie Mae lobbyist “hosted a fund-raising dinner in her suburban Washington home for his leadership political action committee” and “a majority of the company’s top executives wrote checks for the event.” The Chronicle of Higher Education reported, “On several occasions, Mr. Boehner was a guest of Albert L. Lord, who was Sallie Mae’s chief executive officer from 1997 to 2005 and is now chairman of its board, on the company’s corporate jet, primarily for golf outings in Florida.”

SALLIE MAE SAYS JUMP, BOEHNER ASKS HOW HIGH: “Boehner has sponsored legislation strongly supported by private student lenders to restrict the ability of the U.S. Department of Education to make government student loans less expensive by cutting fees,” the Washington Post reported. Recently, Boehner supported a bill that “could deal a serious blow to the competing direct-loan program” by making student-aid budgets discretionary (variable from year to year), rather than mandatory. Sallie Mae and other private companies hope this change will allow Congress to reduce funding to their direct-loan competition.

Well, it was a “meet the new boss, same as the old boss”
    situation no matter who won.
Still, additional focus on each successive corrupt
leader that the GOP elects will give an excellent
look into the corrupt to the core GOP leadership.
This will allow people to make an informed decision
    this fall.

  6. LTParis says:

Well this gives the Dems more ammunition, if they can use it properly, to be a real party of change. Let’s see if they can collect themselves and roll this into something positive.

  7. Krazny says:

it has always been about the hamiltons. Politics is corrupt from corporate money. Regardless of party affiliation. The republicans are in power, and are getting more of that money to insure special interests get paid in full. Usually with the blood of American citizens. We seem to have a problem with corporate rights overtaking citizen rights. I am not sure how to change. One approach may be to change how a person can make a campaign contribution. I know that many will yell about free speech, and freedom to donate thier money were they would like. However this type of thing is destroying our country.

Boehner is no better then Delay. The big difference is Boehner isn’t under indictment yet.

  8. Anti Warhol says:

This is an issue to take to the apathetic college and pre-college age voters. They may be cynical about politics, but this affects them directly. Politicians will continue to pass this kind of legislation in favor of private lenders because the constituency of young voters doesn’t care.

Here is the problem as I see it: People like me who are strong, liberal democratic voters (see my blog if you think I’m a concern troll) will eventually tire of voting for the interests of other people who don’t care enough to get out and vote.

The Bush Admins small group of neo-cons, assault on the Constitution thru Conference of States (COS) Types, Such as Newt Gingrich and the Neo-cons, should wake up conservatives and Democrats alike.
They pose a Very real threat to ‘That Peice of Paper’ as George refers to it.

  10. Clif says:

CNN when they reported the vote for Boehner also reported the extra vote due to “more votes than voters”,

damn that diebold you’d think they wouldn’t have to cheat when the get a republican only election.

    Duck on A Junebug
So ‘Beaner’ is the new ‘Bugman’ (delay)

Beaner says SMALLER Government and More Freedom, is His Motto, His Calling Card? Is this Guy Joking or What? Every one of these so called ‘Conservatives’ are more like Capitalists gone Mad.
    Time to shell the Boehner

What about that conference call Majority Leader Boehner was part of back in 1996 in which Newt Gingrich, Tom DeLay, Boehner and a bunch of other Republicans plotted to defy the will of the House Ethics Committee?

    Remember that?

Boehner is the guy who got a black eye back in the mid-90s for handing out checks from Tobacco lobbyists on the floor of the House. And of the three guys running for the job he had the MOST former staffers working on ‘K Street’.

So thats HOW you make Smaller Government Mr Boehner?
    Buy HIRING the MOST?

Did someone reverse the word Conservative in the dictionary and not tell anyone but the Neo-cons?

But Boehner ran as a candidate of reform who would clean up the House GOP Caucus.
So why not take him at his word?

It’s pronounced, BAY-ner ……… soundes like a boner of a leader though … just like the others

Yes, there were more ballots cast on the first vote than Republican members. These guys can’t even have an internal election without rigging it.

  15. Jamie says:

It is Bay-Ner but those of us who are stuck having him as our rep prefer to call him BONER. True this article is appropriatly named since Hamilton, Ohio (my town) is in his district and real close to where he lives. We really need to find someone to run against him here.

When times are tough, women tend naturally to abort a higher percentage of male fetuses. Researchers call it culling, but they don’t know why it occurs.

This much is known: During times of social or economic stress, a woman’s liver tends produces more of a hormone called cortisol that proves so damaging to male fetuses they actually kick out in response to it.

Female fetuses, more vital on the whole, seem relatively unaffected by the cortisol.

One theory states that damage to male fetuses is a side effect of this hormonal stress response.

But in a new study, researchers provide evidence for the other theory, that the body is purposely culling the males by pumping out cortisol in an effort to get rid of a child-to-be that is less likely to survive the presumably difficult situation outside the womb.

The key to the research is this: Male embryos and fetuses are known to be weaker. So trying to bring a boy into this world under hardship would be disadvantageous, in terms of survival of the fittest, compared to having a girl.

(“Boehner (pronounced Bay-ner) represents the 8th Congressional District of Ohio…”)

Good thing it isn’t pronounced the way “they” pronounce it: Bane-r! We can only hope he is not truly a “bane”.

    dictionary.com says: bane definition is:

    1. Fatal injury or ruin: “Hath some fond lover tic’d thee to thy bane?” (George Herbert).
    2. A cause of harm, ruin, or death: “Obedience,/Bane of all genius, virtue, freedom, truth,/Makes slaves of men” (Percy Bysshe Shelley).
    3. A source of persistent annoyance or exasperation: “The spellings of foreign names are often the bane of busy copy editors” (Norm Goldstein).
    4. A deadly poison.

  22. swinadotcom says:

Here’s my analysis of the first ballot.

Did Roy Blunt try to steal the Majority Leader position?

“Vote early, vote often.” – Al Capone

From the bomb-throwing liberals at Roll Call:

House Republicans are taking a mulligan on the first ballot for Majority Leader. The first count showed more votes cast than Republicans present at the Conference meeting.

    Oopsie.

How does something like that happen? Seriously. I know Republicans suffer amnesia every time a grand jury or Congressional oversight is involved, but is this really something that can be shrugged offf as an honest mistake? Are people really going to forget that they already voted? Ockham’s Razor states that the simplest explanation is usually the correct one.

    Q. Why would there be more ballots cast in an election than people to cast them?
    A. Somebody’s cheating!

Could it be that Abramoff-tainted Tom Delay protege Roy Blunt was rigging the vote?

Let’s see, wasn’t this type of behavior exposed with Abramoff? Mmmm, do they really think that we are that stupid?

I used to need to include links with my posts, but not any more! There’s so much out there and so much new stuff surfacing daily that who needs posts anymore?

Now remember, I’ve been telling you that this is the “Worlds Largest Criminal Organization”! Just watch as more is going to surface tomorrow and the next day. With what I know, surfacing this isn’t expected to stop either! There’s a lot left to come out, you just wait and see!

Corporate America is also involved! Already some of the companies have surfaced, but wait as there are lots more! You’re going to be surprised with who else is involved!

You really don’t believe they really want to change everything for the better, now do you? I’m sure you’ll agree that they want to keep everything running just as it has for as long as they can keep it that way!
