Hold your applause.

By Judd Legum on Feb 8th, 2006 at 11:20 pm

Hold your applause.

“During a discussion on civil rights leader Rev. Joseph Lowery’s address at Coretta Scott King’s funeral, CNN aired a video clip of part of Lowery’s remarks, in which he mentioned the failure to find WMDs, cropping out 18 seconds of applause and the standing ovation he received without indicating that the clip had been doctored.”

    And another thing…….

We have to fight this game plan of the Right to silence us by the”Democrats are angry” bull shit. We on the left have to affirm NOW and quickly (before this psyops gambit about anger works it’s slime) that angry we are and angry we will stay until we replace the right. Anger is warrented right now….and just. It is crucial we don’t let them knock us back on our heels but this mind game about anger. The right wing attacks with subtleness…. These are crafty political opreratives. So….. angry is good..we need not shy away from this label. Becuase they are trying to neutralize us.

Okay, I must be completely lost here, because I refuse to watch CNN at all for its constant “Left Wing” nonsense. Was this done during the Funeral Service that was aired on all National News Networks? Or was it just a clip aired later to discuss whether it was right to even be speaking about “Political” views? I mean this was supposed to be about Coretta Scott King’s life and all of the wonderful things that She and her Husband accomplished, right??? Not to dump on the current Admins. policies… So here is my thought, ” Leave the Politics at the door when attending a Funeral.”

  8. suzanne says:

Angela, Coretta Scott king lived and breathed politics in the sense of fighting for equality and freedom for all. Not Bushies type of freedom. And you just leave the kind of funeral her relatives and friends wanted her to have up to them…..leave it up to them. how dare you question the type of funeral they chose. No one tells you how to run your funerals……or do they? is that what you want….to have people telling you what kind of funeral to have. IT’S A FREE COUNTRY…AT LEAST FOR A WHILE MORE. WAKE UP!!!

  11. Angela says:

No Suzanne…I think you are missing the point completely! Whether you want to hear what I have to say or not is really not the point at all. What I am trying to say is that Coretta Scott King’s funeral should have been a celebaration of her life…I am sure that her family would have agreed with that. I really doubt that they want to remember their Mothers funeral as a Political forum. It was not a place to take the President to task over personal views. There is a time and place for everything, and that was neither the time nor the place. I know what Ms. King stood for and all that she has accomplished in her life, but she was also a graceful woman, who used peace to get her point across. And here is my final thought…Do you really think that she would have stood at a funeral and done and said the same, as those did at her funeral??? I truly believe she would not have.

  12. thinking is not a crime says:

i’m going to go ahead and state the obvious: They cut out 18 seconds of applause because it was too long to air. i really doubt there was any political motivation in cutting it. When you have a two minute segment (or however long it was) seconds count. letting 18 seconds be wasted just for applause takes time away from whatever “discussion” they were trying to have.

There are serious issues in this world, but CNN cutting 18 seconds of noise, isn’t one of them.

KEEP YOUR EYES ON THE BALL, FOLKS. DON’T GET DISTRACTED BY THIS NONESENSE.

How dare George W. Bush even ATTEND her funeral? If she had lived in New Orleans she would have died months ago. So if I lost you with that last sentence, then listen up: If you support Bush you DON’T value human life. Sorry.

The funeral is arranged and organized by the surviving family members. The funeral you saw is what they wanted. You didn’t like? TOUGH! “I am sure” they Mrs. King’s family don’t care what you think because they organized the funeral the way they wanted.

    And that “I am sure”.

You don’t know her family and have no right to speak for them. So back to your seat and STFU!

    #11

    Angela,
You said, “Coretta Scott King’s funeral should have been a celebaration of her life…I am sure that her family would have agreed with that. I really doubt that they want to remember their Mothers funeral as a Political forum. It was not a place to take the President to task over personal views. There is a time and place for everything, and that was neither the time nor the place.”

Coretta Scott King’s life was politics! She fought bravely (as did Rev. Dr. Lowery) her entire life to secure the equality, and justice that the Constitution grants to ALL the people of this nation. She was a staunch and outspoken critic of the war in Iraq and the reasons spoken about by Rev. Dr. Lowery (which were true I may add) for our going to war there. To have celebrated her life and not talked about the politics that she lived and breathed her entire life would have been a disservice to her memory. When we lose our ability to speak about that which makes us angry (as the war in Iraq made Mrs. King angry before her passing), we are no longer free. I assure you that her family was probably quite pleased with the service and the eulogy given by Rev. Dr. Lowery (hence all the applause and the ovation).

At the same time, the President and the first lady both looked at several points: fidgety, bored, and angry. He did not look like he was there to celebrate anything, much less the life of an American icon. He most certainly did NOT look Presidential but then that’s par for the course with him. One has to wonder if his mother ever taught him any manners at all; I’m going to go out on a limb and say “no”.

  20. Theresa says:

Oh, and 18 seconds versus 18 minutes, same thing, different administrations. They’ll both go down in history as the, say it with me: “worst….presidents….evah…”

  21. realist67 says:

    #7 and 11, Angela:

“Leave the Politics at the door when attending a Funeral.”

To say that one should leave politics at the door IS a political statement, Angela. It supports status-quo conservatism. It implies that things are hunky dory, that there isn’t a crisis. It is an attempt at censorship; it shows disrespect for people who believed in social justice for ALL, not just corporate handouts and tax breaks for the rich. It implies that his comments – spend money on the poor instead of on wars of choice – is not important or worth considering.

Tha means that it ignores numerous instances in the bible where Jesus says allowing poverty to flourish is evil, so you are trying to curtail the man’s freedom to practice his religion, and to express his views. (No, I’m not Christian, but I know an respect the bible)

If MLK had raised the issue of civil rights during a colleague’s funeral, he would have been accused of being “political” in his time. Your children – white or black, or whatever – get to live in a more equitable society because of those achievements.

  22. Max-1 says:

The Meomorilization of an Iconic Figure
deserves the attention to which their lives were cast upon. A great civil rights leader deserves a great civil rights memorialization. Anything less denotes that their work was for not.

And in the services, if when we reflect upon their life and trials, tribulations and achievements, that when we weigh their legacy to what we have today causes an undo hardship to some, it is only because the reflections cast upon those that scorn their own personage as wrong, immoral, illicit, is such.

So let them cast dispersions upon the critics, their masses, their voters. For it will be their undoing as their fire and brimstone burns those that which they need the most.

  23. Angela says:

Okay I got your number now Suzanne…You do not like what I have to say, because I do not agree with you… Well then as far as YOU GO…you do not KNOW WHAT HER FAMILY WANTED EITHER! Again, you missed the WHOLE POINT! So no I will not STFU, as I have woken up, as you so suggested earlier, but just to see that I could say God Bless You, and you would say, How would I know what God would do…It is a FREE COUNTRY, and I have a RIGHT leave my comment as much as you do… whether you agree or disagree, like it or not! Point Blank… those who used such time to spew their political beliefs where WRONG to have done so at the time! But that is just my oppinion, and we all know what oppinions are!!!

  24. Angela says:

Wow I have just finished sending my last comment, and I see that many more are angry with me. I just do not get it. Guess I never will. How is it that everyone else was allowed to have an oppinion, but mine is being shredded apart??? I will tell you why, because if I do not write what is politically correct here on this website, then I am the enemy. Wow, is that not what Freedom of Speach is about? Yes, you do not have to agree with me, but you do not have to tell me to STFU, because then that WOULD BE CENSORSHIP, which is what I thought this comment board was talking about. Hmmmmm….guess both sides in this Country need to do a lot of thinking…

    “All together now…”What liberal media?”

    Comment by TerrytheTurtle — February 8, 2006 @ 11:21 pm

The thread is meant to show that the charge of a “liberal [mainstream] media” and associated “left-wing conspiracy” theory doesn’t sit with CNN’s biased support for Bush.

This goes back to the media consolidation that was allowed in the eighties and nineties, which means more and more nowadays NEWS is controlled by corporate hacks ,which is to say, by private interest rather than public interest (of whatever political persuasion).

  26. Max-1 says:

    Snagged this from AfterDowningStree.org

    George Bush Is a Saint

President Bush was scheduled to visit a Methodist Church outside of Washington as part of his campaign to restore his poll numbers. Karl Rove made a visit to the Methodist Bishop, and said to him, “We’ve been getting a lot of bad publicity among Methodists lately because of Mr. Bush’s position on stem cell research, spying on Americans and the like. We’d gladly make a contribution to the church of $100,000 if during your sermon you’d say the President is a saint.” The Bishop thinks it over for a few moments and finally says, “The Church is in desperate need of funds, so I’ll do it.”

Bush pompously shows up looking especially smug and as the sermon progresses the Bishop begins his homily: “George Bush is a petty, self-absorbed hypocrite and a nitwit. He’s a liar, a cheat and a low-intelligence weasel. He has lied about his military record and had the gall to put himself in a jet plane landing on a carrier posing before a banner stating ‘Mission Accomplished.’ He invaded a country for oil and money, and he’s using the war to lie to the American people. He’s the worst example of a Methodist I’ve ever personally known. But compared to Dick Cheney and the rest of his cabinet, George Bush is a saint.”

    BUT…

    1. Cheney is running the show now backstage. We’d be better off with him up front as a walking advertisement for voting against Republicans.

    2. Impeachment and removal from office are two separate things, one of which has never been done in U.S. history. The Republicans destroyed what was left of a Democratic Party by impeaching Clinton. They did not remove him from office.

    3. An investigation into impeachment, as well as proposals for censure, serve an educational and political purpose in themselves and move us toward impeachment. Let’s stop jumping five steps ahead of ourselves in order to fantasize about defeat.

    4. It is impossible to investigate Bush or Cheney without incriminating the other.

    5. If you cannot impeach for the highest crime imaginable, taking the nation to war on the basis of lies, then you can never impeach, or impeachment must be reserved for sex.

    Boo-Yah!!!111

#24 Watch the whole funeral and you will see her children there, and they did not disapprove. But you probably do not know Rev. Lowery was a good friend of both Coretta Scott King and Martin Luther King. Dr. King and Rev. To quote you, “you do not have to agree with me…” And you do not have to agree with what was said at Mrs. Kings’ service, but nobody asked for your opinion on the matter. But it was their right to do and say anything they wanted to. It had nothing to do with GWB, although some seemed to think so. Get crucial.

    Angela,

You are COMPLETELY self centered in YOUR thoughts on what should have been allowed to be said at Ms. King’s funeral.

You absolutely miss the point that the remarks made, while seemingly offending many on the right, were in the very spirit of Ms. King’s legacy and reflected her LIFE’S ACCOMPLISHMENTS to a degree that those that loved her and were in attendance broke into applause throughout the service. Not only was it appropriate what was said, it would have been an inappropriate service to not reflect on these ideas and philosophies which memorialized Ms. King’s contributions beautifully.

What a beautiful service, indeed. It hit the mark.

    That’s the problem.

  37. Evil Spaniard says:

#37 That’s the problem. The applause wasn’t “noise” as far as it was significative to enrich information. You must ask to yourself “if the response of the public were booing at the funeral, would it be news?” If you think yes, applause is then significative. As far as a public shows his emotions, approval or disapproval, confronted with a speech or action performed by a community leader, it’s news. And cutting it is obfuscating news.

Think of Bush in the rune pile of the WTC with the bullhorn, or the whole “Mission Accomplished” stage. Weren’t PR stunts over a pile of deads? Weren’t significative for USA people? Weren’t they pollitical, at least in a significant part?

From Suzanne. I am not saying Angela cannot state her view. But look at it this way. A funeral took place. Who are the people speaking against it? The right. Is it really about the funeral? no. It’s about what was said there. It happened in a way that served Coretta King’s legacy, her family, and friends. End of story. To use the gambit of saying a funeral was not the place for these things is dishonest. Dishonesty on the right. They are hiding behind fake propriety. If a great athletee died, his funeral would probably have speakers that talked about his great achievements or vision of sports. i.e….about his life..the core of his life. Angela has a narrow view of what can and cannot happen at funerals.. Reminds me of Terry schaivo. The right “knows” how we are supposed to live folks…regarding manners, views, how to die, how to pray….and on and on. They HIDE behind their assumed chosen beliefs of truth and correctness…and are shocked when others don’t hold them. It scares them and they ( many of them ) don’t think deeply. But….guess what. Again, If chuckles the clown died and his friends knew he had a passion.. a passion mind you, for water spuirting out of fake flowers, I bet we would see a few at his funeral. Angela doesn’t see her own blindness.

When did you become the family spokesperson? Her family was not only in attendance and standing for Dr. Lowery, her daughter Bernice mentioned political issues in her eulogy. Are you insinuating that she did so to dishonor her mother? Don’t be ridiculous. The family made the arrangements. The family chose speakers. The family isn’t upset. Stay out of other people’s personal affairs. You wouldn’t want someone outside of your family trying to tell you how you should honor your deceased relative would you? Somehow, I think not.

    Angela also said:

I mean this was supposed to be about Coretta Scott King’s life and all of the wonderful things that She and her Husband accomplished, right??? Not to dump on the current Admins. policies… So here is my thought, ” Leave the Politics at the door when attending a Funeral.”

Again we are faced with a double standard. No regressives from the right were throwing tantrums during Reagan’s week long memorial. Nobody said they shouldn’t be talking politics. Nobody condemned the regressives for using Reagan’s death to “get on their soap box”. Nobody spoke up about the sanctity of a funeral being violated. Once again regressives show themselves to be hypocrites. I refuse to further cater to their arrogance.

  52. Sharon Cox says:

I watched nearly all of Corettas Scott Kings ulegy or celebration of life on C-Span. Nothing was left out. It was truly inspiring and memorable. Much of what the King’s had done I also lived through and joined in on. I would of found no fault on any ajenda or lack of one. The family and their supporters, friends and civil rights groups had the right to do as they saw fit. The right winged nut jobs want to make issues over Bush and pickles, go ahead. Bush and his liers and theives are wrong and it’s no one’s business to critizise the King family. I saw how he (Bush) reacted to the many King supporters. May I add all the applause for every speaker except Bush was truly inspiring as well. Viewing it as I did, I saw a spoiled, evil, inept pair of people unwilling to understand the human condition and the followers of peace, civil rights and non violence. Waramonging, self imposed dictator Bush want’s every one to worship at his feet, it ain’t gonna happen. I doubt Bush would have such a service, filled with love, understanding and fellowship. Now we must continue on……Blessings to the King Family and all who spoke out for human rights. Impeach now.

…anyone who even remotely HINTS at feeling sorry for Bushiva or any of the demons in his support/service IS the enemy…

    …in a nutshell sweety, this ain’t politics as usual…

…if you support Bushiva, L’il Dick, Stepford Laura et al. in way, shape or form, you’re a traitor!

  54. cynical ex-hippie says:

Angela is funny. She has two requests. Leave politics at the door, and celebrate the life of Coretta Scott King. I think those two actions are mutually exclusive.

And saying STFU is not censorship. Censorship is removing your posts and your ability to post. That’s what they do at redstate.org. Telling you to STFU is exercising free speech. So STFU. Or don’t I don’t care. Coretta fought against your political predecessors and we are fighting against you. If that cheeses you off then you should think hard about whose side you are on.

Maybe Bush should just avoid black people. Or maybe he should have delivered a eulogy where he talked about how Coretta and MLK did not appreciate the freedoms they were given, that they were wrong to criticize the President in a time of war, that if they didn’t like being wiretapped then they must have had something to hide. How they were lucky to live in a country where they could criticize the government. How they wouldn’t like living in Iraq. Or how they wanted to surrender to terrorists.

That would suit the wingnuts better, no?

  55. Angela says:

WOW! I have been called a traitor. Look I am not narrow minded nor have I ever been. No matter what I say here y’all will disect it, as you have done so far. My values have been called into question and too many more things to recite from this page. For those who say I did not know Ms. King personally, you are correct. I gave my oppinion. My bad, I guess I should have toed the same line as everyone else here. I will not make that mistake again. I mean that is basically what y’all want right? But, yet I am the one who follows blindly, and has no oppinion in this America that has died, as so suggested above. First and fore most I am an American, and for every one who has commented here, or in public, or where ever as an American…I may have agreed or not agreed with you, but I have never with intent or anger, used my oppinion to hurt you. Truly what I say or think has no direct effect upon you. I will not speak for anyone else but myself here, which means that even my oppinon will from here on out be nil. Here is the ironic thing…I was feeling hurt and angry by the words here, and then my Son walked in from school with tears running down his face, and I stopped typing and turned to him. He was teased all day today for an inncident in school. While talking with him I told him as long as he holds his head high, and sticks firmly to what his heart believes, and knows, what I know too, that God does not put anything on us that we cannot handle. When he walked away from me and smiled, I turned back here to y’all. Listen when it is all stripped away, the politics and all the crazyness of this horrible world, you and I are Human Beings with families and feelings. You are right to stand up and believe and fight to the death for your family. So keep on standing firm to your beliefs and know that more than anything i wish you all well, and hope that America can find the peace that we are all searching for. God Bless!

  56. cynical ex-hippie says:

You’ve been called a traitor? Welcome to the club. Best selling conservative books have been written upon the premise that to disagree with conservative philosophy is treason. I believe one of the books was called “Treason.” Don’t expect too much sympathy here.

You have your opinion. Mr and Mrs King’s friends and family have theirs. Tell me. To whose opinion should we defer?

    Angela, dahling…

    …why don’t you take your own advice…

No one called YOU (specifically by name) a “traitor”…

…unless of course you consider yourself a right wing inbred, ‘loyalist’ worshipper of the criminal traitors Bushiva and L’il Dick…

    …do you?

  59. Angela says:

I have followed a friends rss to this page, and I will say my Goodbyes. Good luck to you all. I hope that you will not think to badly of me. I am a human, and I gave an oppinion. Please take good care of you and all you love. God Bless you all.~Angela

Before you decided this was something underhanded did you ask yourself what speeches doesn’t CNN do this for ?
Do you really think for news itens with a limited timeslot that they don’t edit all non-informative intros, clapping, changeovers, etc for Bush’s addresses to the military ?

In 4 years I reckon I’ve seen Bush declare mission accomplished on a battleship 50 times and never seen the whole address or an unedited section of applause once.

This is why they call you hysterical.
