While living in Montana I met an old rancher, last name Godfrey. He was pretty well to do and raised lot's of good racing horses. Mr. Godfrey was in his 80's still going strong and told me many old time true event's he and his comrads and fellow ranchers had gone through. He told me he was in on the last hanging (along with neighbors) of a horse thief. Think he told me it was up on the Mussel Shell area somewhere. Well any way he's telling me about the hanging and that they caught up with this fella and I said with no judge, jury or trial how could you be sure he was guilty and just hang him. Mr Godfrey was silent for a moment, smiled and said to me " girl, he was riding the stolen horse." When the fox is caught with the chicken in it's mouth, it doesn't matter how it wags it's tail, it's guilty.
