White House Cover-Up: McClellan Conceals Heart Attack From Press

For 22 hours, the White House concealed the fact that Vice President Cheney had inadvertantly shot a 78-year old man, Harry Whittington.

The White House continues to withhold critical information from the press. In a press conference today, hospital administrator Peter Banko said that the White House had been informed that Mr. Whittington suffered a heart attack between 9:30-10AM this morning. Watch it:

(QuickTime Streaming)

But at today’s White House Press Briefing, which started after 12PM, Scott McClellan didn’t tell the press. CNN confirmed that McClellan “was notified [about the heart attack] just before the briefing.” But McClellan suggested to reporters that he had no new information:

I don’t want to make this about anything other than what it is. It is what it is. I was very respectful and responsive to your questions yesterday. I provided you the information I knew based on the facts that were available… I’m just not going to go back through it again.

McClellan concluded “You’re welcome to continue to focus on these issues. I’m moving on.” Too bad Mr. Whittington can’t do the same. He’ll be in the hospital for at least another week.

Banko press conference transcript:

QUESTION: What time did you notify the White House this morning and did you tell them, when you notified them, that he had a minor heart attack?

ADMINISTRATOR: Our cardiologists probably talked to him shortly after the cardiac cath was done, between 9:30 and 10:00 am this morning.

QUESTION: And you did tell them he had a minor heart attack?

ADMINISTRATOR: I did not hear the conversation that the cardiologists had amongst themselves, so I can’t tell you what – And heart attack is a layman’s term, so they went into a little more clinical detail.

Scottie not telling the truth who would of thunk it!

  2. cheneytobejailed says:

God forbid Mr. Whittington dies – but if he does – or he dies a year later realted to this injury – isn’t Cheney guilty of involuntary or reckless manslaughter?

  3. pgw says:

HOW MUCH DO YOU THINK HIS HOSPITAL BILLS WILL BE?

  4. guiltymancheney says:

Scottie is a weasel – should we be surprised that he knew of the heart attach before the WH briefing?

    No…

  5. kingfelix says:

i think Karl Rove is writing the medical team’s press releases

David Blanchard, chief of emergency care, called it “a silent heart attack, an asymptomatic heart attack. He’s not had a heart attack in the traditional sense.”

no doubt if the guy dies, he will have “apparently died, but not in the traditional sense. he could wake up again, we really don’t know. it’s best we wait until after the mid-terms… then we’ll try tapping a drum near his head and see if he responds.”

  6. Matt says:

Notice how no one is talking about Libby, Plame or Delay.

Even with titles like “White House Cover-Up” people are not paying attention anymore (average everyday folks). This was a stupid hunting accident. Yes, Cheney and his staff have mislead the media and tried to avoid the issue. Now, however, as it continues they will still dodge questions…just enough for the media to keep asking them. This non-issue will be the new talk show & blog gossip piece and it will continue to get 24-hour coverage on CNN & Fox. Yet, less and less coverage will go toward larger issues.

The more McClellan “doesn’t tell” about the accident, the more you push…and the less you pay attention to the rest of the GOP corruption.

  7. Optimist says:

Scottie tells the press corps what questions they should be asking. Beautiful.

  8. Gregor Samsa says:

That’s right. When confronted with a lie you’ve said in the past, simply reply: “You’re welcome to continue to focus on these issues. I’m moving on.”

And with that, you’ll avoid taking any responsiblity. It works very well if you have a job in this administration.

  9. guiltymancheney says:

So true Matt. Think Cheney did this on purpose???

    Ahh, not surprised at all…

  10. ne-right-ne says:

A couple of questions to discuss. Where is the weapon? According to the report on “The Smoking Gun” (ironic huh?)the weapon and ammunition should be taken to the investigating officer. Also, for all you CSI fans, what is the minimum and maximum distance for 28 caliber Perazzi shotgun with 7 1/2 shot able to penatrate to the heart? These are the questions I’d like answered.

  11. dlet says:

I know that this Whittington fellow is a heavy hitting GOPer but I would never wish this on anyone and I hope he recovers. A group of us in the office were discussing this and one colleague said, “But I heard that he was hunched down in an area where he shouldn’t have been and stood up into the line of fire. I just feel so bad for Mr. Cheney. He must be going through h@ll over this.” The three of us just looked at her and said some hopeful things about Whittington’s recovery and left. I couldn’t show a better example of the Con’s disconnect with humanity and reallity than that.

  12. calif4nian says:

This shows the typical White House way. Keep a secret until it gets out, then mislead, obfuscate, and lie. Then refuse to talk about it. Whatever shines a light on these misdeeds, it gets out there. While there may be a scandal overload, it all may tie in together. It’s finding any real politicians to stand up for their country that seems to be the problem.

  13. guiltymancheney says:

What we are NOT talking about because of this ‘accidental’ shooting-

The news that Abramoff was ‘very close’ to Rove.

And the failed leadership leading up to Hurricane Katriana…

And the fact that Americans are still dying daily in Iraq…

  14. Ugh says:

I think I’ll give Scottie a pass on this one, it’s not his business to talk about that guy’s medical situation to the WH press core unless the guy has given him the go ahead, which I assume he has not.

Sounds like the White House Really believes in The Freedom Of The Press ..Wheeeww I was scared that Scottie Mc-Gannon was going to supress the Freedom Of The Press …

  17. ne-right-ne says:

#13 the Abramoff scandal is a slow cook. Fitz is checking all avenues. This won’t die. Chertoff is on the front burner tomorrow after his own repubs lit him up in their report. This won’t die either. Iraq has never been the most powerful story largely because there is no unifiying commitment or sacrifice from this country. We can’t let this die. The Cheney going off half cocked is just the soup of the day (ok soup of the last 3 days)

  18. justme says:

#17- I agree. We can not let this die. But I am afraid it will fade like all the other scandals…

    Although I hope not.

  19. turtle says:

Wow… the White Houses’s inability to be open with the truth has been institutionalized. How sad.

  20. Granite State Destroyer says:

Rove: “We need to get some of these bad stories off of the front page, any volunteers?”

Cheney: “What if I go on a hunting trip with a couple of young tartlettes and then shoot some 78 year guy in the face and heart with a shotgun?”

    Rove: “Perfect”.

    -GSD

  21. Granite State Destroyer says:

Also, how sick that doctors are being put into the spin mode too. Lies and more lies is all they have to offer.

The world is boiling with rage against the US. Pakistan is in full revolt burning US businesses. Iraq is back to killing US troops and Afghanistan just saw four US troops killed yesterday.

Hamas is going on a world victory tour.

    Heckuva job.

  23. Jay Randal says:

Karl Rove is trying to cover-up everything to protect his real boss VP Dick Cheney! If Harry Whittington passes away, even from heart attack, then Cheney’s political career is over! Dick could be charged with involuntary manslaughter if Harry dies, which would require Cheney to resign as VP!

  24. justme says:

Mike Leggett , the outdoors writer for the Austin American-Statesman, writes: “You shot a guy. At least stay in town until he’s out of the hospital.

“You shot a guy. Don’t blame the sun or the wind or the rotation of the Earth. And for goodness’ sake, don’t blame Harry Whittington.

“He’s the guy you shot, and unless he pulled the trigger himself, it wasn’t his fault. Unless he was invisible, it wasn’t his fault. And it wasn’t his fault that he didn’t ‘announce his presence,’ either. He was supposedly 30 yards behind you. His only fault was being a human being standing on two legs. . . .

“Stand up. Take responsibility. Be a man. You shot a guy.”

    well said!!!

  25. Spudge_Boy says:

    Judd,

Why is it that you guys haven’t posted anything on the fact that not only was Valerie Plame undercover at the time of her outting, but she was working undercover on IRAN?

Dick Cheney shooting a guy in the face under questionable circumstances is a very interesting topic, but we need to keep out eyes on the prize.

If Dick Cheney authorized Scooter Libby to release classified information to the press and that information was the identity of a CIA operative that WAS undercover at the time, well that IS treason. That makes Cheney guilty of treason.

Treason is a much bigger crime than accidentally shooting somebody in the face.

I’m not saying drop all coverage completely, but there are other huge things going on.

  26. Southwest Bob says:

We can only hope that the obvious abuse of the press on this issue will inject some anger into their previously dead brains and they return from the land of the walking dead. Perhaps they will become real news reports who investigate and get to the bottom of WH misdeeds and lies. Well, one can always dream!!!

  27. Ugh says:

Although I would note that he should not be given a pass for making light of the situation, knowing that the guy just had a heart attack.

  31. kirk james murphy, m.d. says:

WHY ARE THE SHOOTER’S DOCTORS STILL INVOLVED IN CARING FOR THEIR BOSS’ VICTIM?

The AP article regarding Harry Whittington’s heart attack states:

“White House physicians who attended to Whittington at the scene after Cheney
accidentally shot him were involved in the treatment, the officials said.”

I am a licensed physician and I’ve spent most of the last twenty-one years in academic
medical centers, hospitals, and the like. I’ve worked as a consultant with ICU teams and
surgical trauma teams. I have NEVER seen a situation in which any victim of violence was
subject to care provided by the assailant’s associates.

The traveling White House docs – whatever their considerable skills may be – aren’t the
only physicians who have ever encountered gunshot wounds or intra-arterial foreign bodies
resulting from gunshot wounds. The traveling White House docs also aren’t the only
physicians able to manage “heart attacks” whether the arterial blockage is caused by lead
    or plaque.

I watched interns and residents and cardiology attendings for some years in my duties at
UCLA. I never noticed anyone from the White House coming by to tell them how to care for
patients. (They and UCLA seemed to thrive on the White house’s neglect. Heck, UCLA has
even expanded its hospital network without resorting to specious claims about weapons of
    mass destruction.)

Even if they had come by, they couldn’t have been involved in patient care. In real
life, hospitals are – well – choosy about who gets to come and play with the patients.
To practice in a hospital, docs have to be vetted before starting to see patients.

The idea that well – some people who work for the dude who was the shooter and they’d
like to to help out here in the ICU – is that OK? – that idea is nonsense.

So what the hell is up with Corpus-Christi Memorial? I’m not doubting the skills of the
White House docs – they apparently saved the patent’s life in the field. But why are
they in the ICU? Are they paid to travel with and provide care for the Veep, or are they
paid to take care of his victims after he’s left town.

If the latter, the White House docs will be very busy once the Iraq vets are back.
One-third are already estimated to meet criteria for the diagnosis of PTSD.

Payback is a bitch. Unless, of course, you’re Dick Cheney.

Hunter Shot by Cheney Suffered Minor Heart Attack

    Published: February 14, 2006

WASHINGTON (AP) — The man shot by Vice President Dick Cheney suffered a minor heart
attack after birdshot moved into his heart, hospital officials said Tuesday, and was
moved back to the intensive care unit for further treatment.

Texas attorney Harry Whittington was recovering and will be monitored for seven days to
make sure more bird shot doesn’t move to other organs or move to other part of his body,
    hospital officials said.

“However some of the bird shot appears to have moved and lodged into part of his heart in
what we would say is a minor heart attack,” said Peter Banko, administrator at Christus
    Spohn Hospital Corpus Christi-Memorial.

White House physicians who attended to Whittington at the scene after Cheney accidentally
shot him were involved in the treatment, the officials said.

Funny how they get more trouble of this stupid story than over all the crap in the past, the CIA leak, Iraq, WMD lies, Haliburton, Enron, the environment, the 2000 election. Of all that, a stupid hunting accident hurts them.

    Bono is Brian Peppers!

  33. THOT'S says:

Spudge_Boy you got a point and also the point of Cheney’s cover up doesn’t look good on the W.H. either it shows a man who only cares about this regime and Coverups and close downs.

Plame and Iran really needs to be out there since the reason for “outing her” works in the favor of invading Iran for Nukes and Plame would have shown that Iran was developing friendly Nuke Power for it citizens but that would have worked against the Planned Invasion of taking over their Natural Resources and raping the country like the White House did with Iraq. Israel also needs to be “Outed” for its role as well. Israel stands to reap Much!

Israel must be forced to sign the NPT and declare how many Nukes it has. When that is done the bush crime family is done for and the Middle east just may become Stable!

Also news must be gotten out how The US and Israel are planning on destroying Hamas and forcing a new vote to put teh FATAH back in power. The reasons behind this is very close to geneocide but what else is new about our Country any more. The United States Of Lost!

  34. Richard Braun says:

The White House press corps is what it is. To serve up White House propaganda. It’s an accident when a real question is asked. Throw the bums out and let Scotty simple issue a daily propaganda release to Fox (aka Pravda).

The press has given a pass to every other scandal these guys are in, why do we think this will be any different?

Check out how they covered the heart attack:

    LA Times

    Sheesh

  36. dlet says:

    #35
Well at least they said he was shot by Cheney and not the guy who jumped in front of Cheney’s birdshot.

  37. Katherine says:

Hey, if Cheney can’t shoot lawyers in the face, the terrorists win.

  38. WC says:

Read something in an AP report that indicated there is an “ongoing investigation” with this. Surprised Scotty didn’t blab about that fact during the press conference.

Oh, and the fact that Cheney refuses to make a public statement about this is sad, especially after Mr. Wittington has taken a bit of a turn for the worse. But this is not unexpected.

  39. dumbstruck says:

If minor heart attack is used to describe the degree of heart damage as peppered by birdshot was used to describe the hunting injury then Whittington is in bad trouble

  40. WC says:

    #29

As soon as someone can sneak a video camera into the hospital room. That, or get a still photo…maybe Frist has taken additional training and doesn’t need moving pictures.

  41. Dan says:

So, are the taxpayers picking up the tab for all of this, or will Cheney cover it out of his own wealth?

  42. Spudge_Boy says:

Well, just about everything that happens in a hospital is photographically documented. There are already pitures of the extent of the damage done by Cheney. Although rather gruesome, somebody needs to leak the pictures, so the truth is known.

Oh that’s right Cheney’s medical aides haven’t left this guys side, so no photos were allowed I am sure.

  43. Jay Randal says:

Real facts will eventually come out if the press keeps up the pressure on Cheney! One item that needs clarification is the distance of Dick from Harry when he shot towards him!
Cheney claims 30 yds, but for the birdshot to penetrate deeply into Whittington, means more likely 15yds or less!
If that is proven then Cheney was very reckless and probably high on alcohol or medication!

  44. Prantha Trivedi says:

I have never, ever heard of buckshot “lodged just under the skin” gravitating to the heart. I cannot believe that the press is not all over McClellan’s UNDERSTATEMENT of the injury.

  48. WC says:

    #42

    Spudge…

I guess by having his medical team stay behind at the hospital, this is Cheney’s way of “showing concern” for the victim. Much easier than making a public statement or two.

  49. Spudge_Boy says:

Hey Cheney, next time take this handy dandy chart with you.

    null

  50. MJ says:

Why does this whole incident remind me of Michael Corleone taking his brother Fredo fishing?

  51. Jay Randal says:

Post 44 > Cheney was firing birdshot shells with about 200 pellets in each shell > not buckshot which has about a dozen large balls that fly out! Now if Cheney was using buckshot on birds, then he wants to blow them apart for sport? And Harry would most likely be dead!

    Thank you for your cooperation.

  71. DS says:

While I would love it if every conservative I know who refuses to see what this administration is really doing would come to their senses because of the more important events, some of them just don’t want to believe the guy they voted for isn’t the guy they were convinced he was. (Like how you don’t want to believe the guy you loved is really a cad and always was.) If stories such as this (and pictures of Bush flying over the Katrina devastation) are the events that are finally going to make them realize they’ve been had, then I’m all for this stuff getting press.

This is something everyday people can relate to (most have hunted or know a hunter) — especially in Red States — so this is something that hits closer to home to them than outed CIA agents and people possibly listening in on their phone calls. It’s when things happen to which everyday folks can truly relate that they start to rethink their choices.

If this is the thing that drops the floor out of the 39% approval rate, then I’m all for it. Not everyone cares as much about politics or world affairs. I’ll take them on our side however I can get them, especially if it makes a difference in November ‘06 and ‘08!

  72. Chris says:

Enough Cheney. The biggest “mis-firing” story of the day is Paul Hackett dropping out in Ohio. Remember Ohio? You win that one you probably go a long way to winning the White House. The Hackett story also goes to the heart of the DNC’s problem in managing any kind of strategy or message (they’ve forgotton what the word perception means and implies). It seems that the Democratic Party and leadership are only getting better at eating their young and shooting themselves in the foot. The Republican machine is laughing themselves silly while Think Progress is 100% Cheney. We all should be writing letters and e-mails to the DNC instead. I had pledged the Democratic Party fifty bucks. Instead of a check in the envelop, they are getting an earful via a letter.

    Chris

  73. capt. jirk says:

  74. Jay Randal says:

Chris this story is important NOT because Cheney shot somebody, but because he and Rove are trying to cover-up the real facts regarding the shooting > it is a window into how they operate with all the other scandals! Paul Hackett is a good man, but the DLC which contols the Democrat Senators do not like him for some reason! Sen. Lieberman is actually a Republican and Sen. Byrd has decided to sell out too! Hackett would not like being used if he was a senator!

Otherwise the press (and the left) are just setting themselves up to be bashed for picking on poor ol’ Dick — I mean, after all, accidents can happen to anybody, right? And meanwhile, real stories are being pushed to the back burner or right off the stove.

Has anybody ever heard any rumors about Cheney drinking? Ever? He strikes me as wound too tight to be indulging in relaxation via ethanol or anything else. But I’d be thrilled to learn otherwise.

  84. Big Al says:

The entire Cheney story would be a comedy routine if it was not so serious for Mr. Whittington. As Al Franken has said, Cheney is a card carrying member of the “chicken brigade” having received six draft deferments. And he’s 78!!!

These guys thought they should keep this story under wraps. Now we know why. This guy could die from this wound. Real easy.

And Sunday they were trying to tell us the wounds were all “superfical”.

More LIES. LIES LIES LIES LIES LIES LIES LIES LIES and more LIES.

  90. worfeus says:

    What they told us.

Cheney “sprayed him” in the face and upper torso with a little bird shot.

    The truth???

He SHOT HIM IN THE HEART!!!

The guys got a SHOT BALL LODGED IN HIS HEART!!!

  91. Fred says:

Ambassador to Switzerland, huh. Problems with Cheney’s stashed millions in Swiss bank accounts? Whittington not going along? If they won’t set things straight then I am not responsible for my immagination.

  92. justme says:

#89 – Not paying attention? To the VP shooting a 78 year old gut IN THE FACE story????

Oh, but me thinks we are….

  93. Wayne A. Schneider says:

We may never know if he was drinking or not the day of the shooting, because he did not talk to the sheriff untill the next day, which means he would be sobered up by then!

    Comment by Jay Randal — February 14, 2006 @ 4:52 pm

That’s assuming he ever stopped drinking that day. :)

  94. worfeus says:

    #95

Yea, I did that when I was real young Wayne.

About 20 years ago I totaled my girlfriends car one night on the way back from a bar. Wrapped it around a Lamppost.

I was so drunk I could not stand up. So I flagged down a motorist and got the hell out of there. When the cops showed up, I was long gone.

The next day I went in, and of course no one could prove I was drunk. But I was charged with leaving the scene.

Too bad they can’t charge Cheney likewise.

  95. WaltTheMan says:

Yeah, 4 ounces of scotch is always a better picker-upper than orange juice and coffee.

  96. TJM says:

There is nothing that can be said on this thread that can top the “Daily Show” treatment of the incident. Words and stills just don’t cut it,go watch the clip on C&L.

  97. Keith H. says:

Scotty’s going to call in sick tomorrow.

  98. Jay Randal says:

Somebody needs to tell CNN and New York Times to interview our Swiss Ambassador, because she was a witness to what happened during and after the shooting! It is very strange that she is being kept under the press radar screen! 2 older guys hunting with a younger female on a 50,000 acre private ranch is a story in of itself > lol.

  99. Jay Randal says:

Call this story Brokeback Mountain couple meets Swiss Miss > lol.

  100. worfeus says:

    TJM

    I saw that last night.

    I’m still laughing.

  101. worfeus says:

Like Chris Matthews just said, when the White House is this silent on this, there is something wrong here.

When they are stonewalling this bad, something is wrong.

  102. worfeus says:

I personally have a strong feeling that this may not have been an accident.

Cheney has a real bad temper.

Is it possible that Huttington said something that pissed Cheney off and Cheney turned into Elmer Fudd and blasted him?

Could this have been a tantrum on Cheney’s part and now they are trying to whitewash it?

  103. JamesRaven says:

What if Harry Whittington died at the scene?

What if Cheney decided to have the Secret Service take the body to a hospital and have it surrounded with White House docs?

What if all the people involved were friends or benefactors of George Bush, Dick Cheney, or Karl Rove? (They are.)

What if the Secret Service kept everyone away from the body except the White House docs, who, in conversations with Rove, decided to release a stream of press releases which pointed to a steadily declining prognosis? You know, heart attacks, infections, etc.

What if, sometime tomorrow, we hear that Harry Whittington died of his wounds?

Wouldn’t be a lie, would it?

The Psychotic Patriot wants to know.

  104. WaltTheMan says:

    #99,
I’ll say, he needs a nose job.

  105. justme says:

Yes the Daily Show was GREAT last night – as was Letterman…

  106. WaltTheMan says:

Ironic, the confirmation string on my last post was ‘1984′.

  107. Wayne A. Schneider says:

Too bad they can’t charge Cheney likewise.

    Comment by worfeus — February 14, 2006 @ 5:23 pm

I think you’re assuming that leaving the scene of a shooting is against the law in Texas. :)

  108. WaltTheMan says:

    Wayne,
When I was a youth in Texas, there was still a law on the books that said that if you found your spouse in bed with a lover, you could waste both of them and walk away. Perhaps the preacher did not show up, sparing the ambassador.

  109. Wayne A. Schneider says:

    #110 WtM,

Is it also true that if you shoot both of them but one of them lives, then you weren’t “passionate” enough and could get charged with murder and attempted murder?

I also remember hearing during a 60 minutes story about a repo man that got shot by the “former” owner of the truck being hauled away that there were around eleven legal ways to kill someone in Texas, including “theft of property by night”, which is why the “former” truck owner walked up to the cops the next morning, told them exactly what he did, and they didn’t charge him with a crime. (I do not know if he got to keep the truck.)

  110. Rick Byrne says:

I’ll give Scotty a pass here, too. Gotta remember the Doc in Texas was saying 9:30-10 a.m. he told the White House — when it was 10:30-11 a.m. in D.C. Time zones, remember? If I’m the press secretary, on this issue in particular, I am just not going to go with something that I only got an hour ago.

That said, Scotty still deserves to be beamed up to the unemployment line.

  111. me says:

Do you suppose the guy is already dead? Killed at the scene, and they’re just hiding it?

It’s quite a stretch to think they’d do that, but if you consider all their other lies, it doesn’t sound quite so unbelievable.

  112. Kefa461 says:

Dick was drinking……that was the delay. We need a good reporter to find out if the victim was drinking….it should show up in the blood work. It aint Texas hunting
    without horseplay and drinking.

  113. mount vernon says:

I feel like they are looking for a way to get cheney out before all the other scandals overwhelm the reupugs and they are forced to do something on cheney. I see him stepping down soon. Bush probably wouldn’t replace him with someone reasonable, although he could make a deal with Mcain to shut him up and line him up for 08. Bush’s numbers would unfortunately go through the roof with the ill informed, and he would be much tougher to stick all these scandals to. They would spin it as clean start etc. then bomb the hell out of iran. then go back to destroying the middleclass by scaring idiots with gay marriage and the boogie man next door. never thought i would look back at 98′ so fondly.

  114. Buck Shot says:

If it was a 28 guage (which is a very small shotgun) and the dude was 30 yards away (90 feet), and it was light birdshot, then there’s NO WAY it would penetrate to his heart. No freaking way.

Here’s what I think happened: Whittington gets out of the car, followed by drunk Cheney who stumbles and, oops, shoots him point blank, causing major dammage to the face and chest (and the heart). Then the coverup begins.

Saying, “He got peppered pretty good” is an understatement.

    No, he got BLASTED!

  115. karmafriend says:

it’s not a “heart attack”, it’s heart trauma due to birdshot. an it’s not “minor”, it’s serious. someone is pulling strings to play down the seriousness of mr. Whittington’s condition.

  116. TJM says:

Re #110, it wouldn’t matter if you went to trial,if you had “Racehorse” Haynes. Didn’t he get Cullen Davis off for shooting his wife’s lover?

  117. lpt says:

I’m very curious about the ambassador to switzerland and why she was chosen by bush to go there. I also wonder about those select flights of “extraordinary rendition.” If those flights to Europe can move ‘prisoners’ and people, I wonder if they can move stolen money from Iraq as well.

  118. lpt says:

Money moved into the legendary Swiss banking system.

  119. Donald says:

Why did no one at the WH press briefing ask the question, “Did the Vice-President consume any alcohol within 24 hours of the shooting?” It seems to me that when the sheriff was kept at bay 14 hours (?) and the details all come from a friendly, non-governmental source, there is a basis for the question. Also, the Republicans shredded the notion of “protective privilege” for Secret Service agents when they insisted that agents had to testify during the Starr oral sex investigation, so they should be expected to cooperate fully with law enforcement if there is a question about whether Cheney consumed alcohol or had any signs of intoxication.

  120. Cyra Brown says:

While sitting here, reading the posts, a thought occured to me. Isn’t it wild that we are even talking about this latest episode, let alone that it is ACTUALLY happening?? I never would have believed it possible. But here we are all, discussing it, and not being all that surprised about it , either. Just a thought to ponder. I feel like I’m living in “Twin Peaks”.

  121. WaltTheMan says:

    Donald,
Any notion of the VP’s drinking regimen on that day has been classified “Ultra-Top-Secret”, for his eyes only. Any SS agent revealing any details for the incident will be immediately selected as a heart donor should Harry Whittington take a turn for the worse. By the way, gunpowder residue has been found inside the vehicle used during the “hunt”./satire off

  122. devin says:

this is a serious accident and the WH knows it-it’s REALLY hard to wiggle and lie their way out of this. Whittington was “shot in the face” not the foot!

  123. Joe says:

I don’t want to sound politicaly incorrect mentioning age, but….. shouldn’t old people like Cheney, plausibly with slower reaction times and reflexes, be not allowed to hunt in order to prevent the emergence of HUNTING-SERIAL KILLERS? *cough* *cough*

These guys are disasters when they are in offcie AND even off-duty!

Anyway, the delay with which news on this sad episode have been given is, again, indicative of how the White House is more concerned with P.R. than with humanity and compassion.

  124. Hughes for America says:

    White House hides heart attack…

From the Washington Post:The 78-year-old lawyer who Vice President Cheney accidentally shot in a hunting accident suffered a minor heart attack this morning after a piece of birdshot moved and lodged in his heart, doctors said. Doctors treating Harry W…

  125. Harry says:

This is all a bunch of media-generated nonsense. The White House press corp is pissed because THEY wanted to report the story but instead were left out of the loop for all of one day. The public was informed on a reasonably timely basis. End of story.

I’m no Cheney fan (the opposite actually), but I’m sure as a human being he is absolutely mortified at what he did. And now the guy he shot might die. But that doesn’t impose any obligation on him to stand before the press or the public and comment on the incident to them. Anything he has to say needs to be said to the victim and the victim’s loved one.

The desire by the national media to be “in” on this “hot story” is nothing more than an indication of the immature, superficial, and self-centered nature of their approach to public affairs.

  126. Melissa says:

There is so much corruption and carelessness and dishonesty and just plain evil in this administration , it is impossible to keep track of it. It is a snowball rolling downhill , gathering size and speed. It scares me to death.

  127. Rocky says:

If the press, Gregory, Thomas, Irvin, etc. just didn’t show up for these newsless news sessions to show their disdain for Scotties “no comment” “no news” news conferences maybe things would change. We’ve had enough of the butt kissing . . . let’s get down to the down and dirty truth.

  128. Spudge_Boy says:

    Comment by Harry — February 15, 2006 @ 12:36 am

    Nice apologist bullshit.

Do you have a job? This is the only thing that every body at the global technology company I work for is talking about. I got an e-mail from Australia today about our crazy vice president on the loose with a gun.

Get over your nobody cares about this and the press is just mad atitude.

You are incorrect. Everybody cares about this and the White House, as usual, is covering up the facts.

  129. Jay Randal says:

Interesting that some who post on here think that Cheney can shoot somebody and just walk away from it with a shrug?

Try shooting your next door neighbor accidentally and see what happens to you? The police will be all over your butt
demanding to know if you did it intentionally!

Cheney’s alibi does not wash because he delayed talking to a deputy sheriff till the next day! There are only 2 reasons as to why he would do that and not tell the press until 18+ hours later: 1)he was under the influence of booze and needed to sober up or 2)he shot Whittington under different circumstances that he did not want to reveal.

  131. Gerald Sneirson says:

Does Bush actually “know” Cheney? He says he doesn’t “know” Abramoff, or Kenny Boy.

  132. Sir Loin of Beef says:

One of the first things out of administration mouthpieces’ mouths when this story went public was that Witless Whittington “should have announced himself when he returned to the hunting line” after fetching a bird. This, of course, flies in the face of the basic responsibilities drilled into the mind of every twelve-year-old when he gets his first .22 rifle, but its their story and therefore needs to be dealt with.

So what about the stock photo that all the news outlets are showing of Cheney and friends standing waste-deep in grass blazing away with a shotgun? In this picture he’s wearing big-ass ear-protectors; a questionable accouterment for a group hunt. Does anyone know if the VP is in the habit of wearing ear-protectors when he hunts, or should we view this photo as an anomaly?

If he was wearing such a device when he blew Whittington away, then its just a little disingenuous to assert that a failure on the victim’s part to sound-off played any role at all in the shooting.

  133. Gene says:

I know this is a diversion, but it just sticks in my mind that a couple of years ago Dubya went bird hunting and shot a protected bird by mistake. He had to pay a fine. It was in all the papers and their were the expected jokes about his hunting abilities. Does anyone else remember that? Because I don’t think either one of these guys ought to go bird hunting.

  134. Franky Zamora says:

Is this the Most Dangerous Game?

  135. Antagonist says:

From the Democrats, to the White House press corps, to the left wing bloggers, to you morally superior free thinking liberals posting comments–you all have yourselves worked into a lather. You actually believe there is some sort of scandal and cover-up here. Ha ha ha! What’s even funnier is that you believe most of America believes that too–they don’t. We see you for the wacko minority that you are.

  136. galley_queen says:

OK, OK…you are saying that McClellan’s press conference didn’t start until 12:00 and he was told about the ‘heart attack’ at about 10:00….yet, the NYT reports today:

“When the White House press secretary, Scott McClellan, came to the press room just before 10 a.m. Tuesday and suggested he was wearing an orange tie to avoid a stray shot from Vice President Dick Cheney, it seemed to signal an effort to defuse the accidental-shooting story with a laugh.” snip

“No one in Mr. Cheney’s office passed the word to Mr. McClellan, senior officials at the White House said, adding that the press secretary would never have joked about the shooting accident if he had known about the turn of events involving Mr. Whittington.”

So which is it? He knew and still made a joke, or he didn’t know it before he went into the press conference?

  137. Backlash Liberal » Why The Cheney Story Sticks says:

[...] But this one’s different. The story isn’t political in nature. It’s all scandal, baby. And the only thing the press likes more than scandal is the cover-up of a scandal. And if that weren’t enough, the fact that it involves mistreating the press made it personal for them. It’s the cherry on top. And so the press is emboldened. [...]

  138. Ian McGarrett says:

A CNN poll asking if the latenight comics were too hard on deadeye Dick? The poll I’d like to see is the one asking readers who they would most like to see join Dick on his next hunting trip.

  139. MickeyG says:

#10 – I’ll find out how close you have to be. I know someone who would know. Was the shooting at 30 yards, or more likely 3 ft (from the car). We can only speculate whether or not Cheney was drunk. The SS will not tell; they will lose their jobsBush probably wasn’t told until late because he was in his “hear nothing” monkey pose; as he was in the Plame leak.. I agree with the commenter that we may have a few more ashamed Rep hunters turning our way. I’ll take anybody, too! Poor Mr. Whittington will probably die of “natural causes”. Then, what’s all the fuss about? Have no fear Salty & Peppy are in charge! and don’t forget to “duck” if you see them coming!

  140. Sarah says:

Did you hear on Countdown last night that Cheney’s secret service guys brought Mr. Whittington to a much smaller community for initial treatment, opting not to go to Corpus Cristy, even though it was a longer distance and the group had to travel over very rough roads? What’s the deal with that? What the heck are they hiding? Also, several people on the news have commented that it would be impossible for the bird shot to have hit Mr. Whittington from 30 yards away.

  141. edrie says:

Others have pointed out the Veep and White House have “botched” getting the news out about the Cheney-Whittington shooting. Let’s stop worrying about the obvious, i.e., that Cheney thrives in this kind of secrecy, and focus on the why — Rove knew about the incident on Saturday, he’s been kept up to date on Whittington’s condition, he’s a master of misdirection. While we’re focused on the “bad p.r.” angle, we’re not covering (1) Abramoff, (2) DeLay, (3) domestic wiretapping, (4) Katrina, (5) Libby, (6) Continued incompetence in Iraq, (7) VA cuts and increased veterans health care costs in Prez budget, (8) ….. I think Cheney lied about how the incident happened, he probably had been drinking, Whittington and Ambassador are being kept under tight wrap, and Rove is once again earning his salary. Now, unless someone can find the chink in this particular armor, let’s get back to the real world.

  142. SCOTT S says:

Why should we believe that Whittington is alive.
He’s probably been fatally shot or had a heart attack at the moment he was shot at.
The administration is probably just buying time to figure out how they’ll break the news, OR by then we would have forgotten about it – other unforseen tragedies(?). The make believe world of this administration is like watching the teletubbies…America-baby,…everything is juuuust fine, just go back to sleep.

  143. Marrak says:

From 30 yards with a 28 gauge? and it did that? Hah..hah…B*S#…15 yds max…(he wishes it was 30 yds)…must be snort’n that v.s.o.p. yellow cake…

    “I’ll have what e’s drink’n…wha? hunters don’t exagermatate”

  144. MickeyG says:

Just spoke to my expert on hunting, guns, ammo, Vietnam Vet, etc. He has been peppered by bird shot at 30 yds. He said that th 28 cal. gun is very small cal & at that distance, the pellets would probably be done. He said the closest anyone could have been shot into the heart would be about ten yards at a direct hit with no clothes on.

  145. Richard says:

Ask yourself this… What if it were a Kennedy that did this? There would have been outrage from the right and the press would be all over it 10x the coverage we see now.

  146. big papa says:

Scott McClellan is no “press secretary”…

    …he’s a distraction…

  147. Superior Canadian says:

The best thing that Whittington can do is die. It would be the most patriotic act by a republican since Nixon resigned.

  148. robert holley says:

This will go down in history as the presidency of smoke and mirrors. G.W. has been involved in all sorts of business throughout his career and not one has ever succeeded. Why should this be any different? Does anyone remember the Bush brother who cost the taxpayers millions during the S&L scandal and was pardoned by daddy Bush in 98? This family owns the bank of the american taxpayer! There will be no impeachment of the worst criminal organization this country has ever known, these people own us!!!!

  149. curt in santa fe says:

A story of some drunks going hunting ought to be swept under the carpet, especially the VP shooting someone. If the story was investigated it would bog the administration in a criminal investigation and that would be bad for the country. Cheney is VP and ought not to have to be investigated on such a flimsy circumstance as an accidental shooting under the influence of booze and pharmacuticals. Whittington errored by not anouncing his presence..

  150. Tater says:

Get off Cheney’s back, it was an accident not a criminal act. You libs never let up. Besides he is VP, he has more important things to do than participate in some political driven investigation. Whittington was stupid for not anouncing where he was. Jesus Christ lay off him.

  151. Jack in Austin says:

Can one of you idiotic right wing facist neocons (Rush type) imagine what would happen if that was Al Gore doing the shooting? You right wingers are beyond any cognitive understanding. You right wing nuts are the reason this Nation is in dire straits. You make me sick you sheep.

  152. Vicki says:

Oh poor McCallen he just does as he is told gets paid a lot of money to cover and lie about what these guys do.

  153. BS says:

hey tater, it’s the sole responsibility of the shooter (dick) to make sure the path is clear not the other way around. obviously you don’t know shit about hunting. go take and course then comment. jesus christ get educated. and since your a reichwinger and religious i bet jesus loved you using his name like that. fricken reichwing hypocrits

  154. BS says:

jesus christ stood up for the poor, he was. he did not believe in killing period. everything the reichwing stands for is the total opposite of jesus’ teachings. you all are cowards. and anyone else on bushys’ team, you all don’t even think for yourselves. all the rhetoric you spew is the same crap the admin. spews. and i know why: you all are so far up bushies butt the only time you see daylight is when he yawns. find your conscious and some common sense and the rest of us level headed folks might listen or NOT.

  155. Henk says:

A typical 28 gauge load for Quail is #7 1/2 with 3/4 oz. of shot. There are 263 pellets in 3/4 of an ounce of 7 1/2 shot. For dead eye Dick to have inserted 200+ of those pellets into his lawyer buddy at 30 yrds would be damn near imposible. He had to have been much much closer.

  156. Jim says:

One point of fact: what if a regular joe had pulled the trigger? Just think of the police investigations, etc. But Darth Cheney is no regular guy. The actions prove, once and for all that the Bush Regime is above the law, and I thought Watergate proved that NO ONE is above the law. But dream on, eh? I wish We the People, would wake up from this nightmare, or that our supposed elected representatives would restore this sacred democracy we once had. The Confederate Swastica worn by the Neo-Nazis (the American Flag Lapel Pin) has never shined with such valor.

  157. Ohm says:

I think Scottie got his ass kicked a lot as a boy, and is horrified to think he might be “suicided” if he doesnt continue the Bush charade. I’d love to see the look on his face when the revelation finally hits him that he’s just a lying little snot-nosed fuck and that the White House is taking advantage of him. He just might go Postal at the next news briefing.. or, if we are lucky…. nahhhhh!!!

  161. rightious reverand says:

first, isn’t hunting without the proper stamp also called poaching? I wonder just what the laws are in Texas regarding poachers, some states, I believe, consider poaching a felony crime
second, since poaching is a crime and crimes commited with guns are highly punishable in Texas, why is Cheney in washington and not locked up tightly in a Texas jail?
answers are easy, if your a member of the Bush team, then you are above the law

  162. MickeyG says:

Did someone say that it was open season on vice-presidents? Where can I sign up for a license & a stamp? I only need one; shouldn’t be too hard to hit a lame duck v.p.

  163. leslie armstrong says:

If Cheney goes down for manslaughter, I am personally going to demand loud and long that Ted Kennedy goes down for second degree murder for Chappaquidick. The Dems won’t risk reopening that can of worms, which will inevitably be opened if they start any crap about Cheney.

  164. MickeyG says:

That’s right, Leslie. If Kennedy got away with it 40 years ago, why not Cheney? tit for tat. By the way, Leslie, are you a boy or a girl Repulsican?

  165. Michael says:

That’s the weakest comment here Leslie, you tool.

  166. Jeanette Annibella says:

I always thought that under the circumstances of any shooting that hospitals are required to notify police immediately so that any explanations for said shooting could be verified, and, more importantly, that the involved parties could be tested for drugs or alcohol?

  167. Jeanette says:

Although everyone believes and understands this was just a hunting accident, I want to know how it is that the police waited, and waited, and waited…before they were able to interview the parties involved. You can bet your ass that when a poor white person is shot and brought to ANY hospital in this country, let alone if the people involved are black, you can rest assured the authorities will go to any lengths to apprehend and question those involved immediately! This is such bullshit. I for one must believe that there HAS TO BE some sort of cover-up, probably because the parties involved had been drinking. Also, if that ranch owner lady was such an expert on hunting why didn’t she make sure that those in the hunting party had proper licensing? Guess they are above the law.

  168. Charles Ellis says:

Jeanette, you are ’sooo right’ about this thing. One person you didn’t mention was Scott McClellan’s role in perpetuating this BULLSHIT. It was real difficult to watch the press conferences and even more upsetting viewing FOX’s responses. Scott is the most unnerving person on broadcast television. Thank god for John Stewart’s show. He allows us to laugh at this fiasco that seems to occur daily from the Whitehouse. I live in Oregon near a coastal town. My home is out in the woods, about 8 minutes to the beach. We do have wild quail on our property and if you get the lucky chance to see them it’s usually mom and her little ones walking across the one lane gravel road. If you get too close, she will jump up and flap her wings, make some screaches and give the little ones time to split. So eat chicken and leave the quail alone. I do not hunt, nor do I own any weapons. I have severral redneck friends that do. They all voted for Bush. They are very hard to talk ‘politics’ with.
