Last night, NBC Investigative Reporter Aram Roston published an article on MSNBC.com that contained the following paragraph:
That passage was subsequently removed. (See a screen shot of the original article here.)
We do know that Mr. Cheney refused to be interviewed by local law enforcement until the morning after the accident at 8AM. Officials who attempted to interview Cheney on Saturday night were turned away.
There are many legitimate questions regarding the role of alcohol in the accident. Here are three:
1. Is it standard procedure for law enforcement to administer a Blood Alcohol Test immediately after an accidental shooting during a hunt?
2. Who agreed to delay Cheney’s first contact with law enforcement for 12 hours?
3. What was the blood alcohol content of the victim, Mr. Whittington?
Thus far, there is no evidence that suggests alcohol was a contributing factor to the accident. But the traditional media, which have covered the story extensively for the last three days, have failed to ask the appropriate questions.

Can we PLEASE concentrate on real problems here rather than Dick Cheney’s accidental shooting. This has really taken the edge off the most important topic that most of us who grew up well after the McCarthy era will hopefully ever see. The NSA Wiretapping is so much more important and it needs to be covered before the republicans vote the problem out of existence. Out of sight, out of mind. I can’t believe think progress is falling into this media trap.

Scotty just keeps stonewalling them. Didn’t you hear the exchange between Scotty and Dick Gregory yesterday?
And, as far as wiretapping goes, I posted all the websites for the Committee members on the Collapse? thread. Please everyone take time out and write to them. Tell them this is NOT over. Main # to Judiciary: 202-224-5225. Don’t let that go for this story.
February 15th, 2006 at 11:05 amThanks.
SunshineGrrrl, you just used up I don’t how much time NOT doing something about the most important…
Oh, nevermind.
February 15th, 2006 at 11:06 amGreat work, Judd. Those are excellent questions and, since it is obvious that some in the media read this blog, I hope at least one of them will ask them of somebody who might be willing to answer questions truthfully.
And #1, it’s not the accidental shooting that we’re focused on. It’s the suspicious nature of how they allowed the news to be made public, how the facts seem at odds with the “official” version of events, and the lack of public comment from the White House and the Vice President’s office. Add to all that the general overall feeling that, once again, they refuse to discuss something openly and honestly that makes them look bad, so they act like it wasn’t important and we should all move on because they want to move on.
The Vice President show a 78-year-old man in the face and they don’t think it needs to be talked about. That’s what’s bothering us (among other equally important things.)
February 15th, 2006 at 11:06 amoops. It was Congress fold thread. My B.
February 15th, 2006 at 11:06 amI have a one word rebuttal to this outrageous accusation:
SWIMMER
One follow up phrase to put it in perspective:
There is no statute of limitations on homicide, negligent or otherwise.
February 15th, 2006 at 11:07 amThis IS important. A main stream media outlet is scrubbing damaging information from its record. MSNBC needs to come clean on their rationale for scrubbing the information and at the very least, print a correction if the information was erroneous. MSNBC has done this on at least one other occasion.
I agree that the NSA scandal is more important, but this seems to be what the general public can grasp. The use of this incident as a metaphor for the Administration may be as powerful as any other scandal because it is a relatively uncomplex issue that is easier to understand.
February 15th, 2006 at 11:09 am#9 Good point. I like the “metaphor” argument. If the public can’t understand a Vice President getting away with shooting a 78-year-old man in the face, then there’s no hope of them becoming “informed” enough on the other abuses of power to make the very important political decisions that affect their everyday lives.
February 15th, 2006 at 11:15 amCan we PLEASE concentrate on real problems here rather than Dick Cheney’s accidental shooting. This has really taken the edge off the most important topic that most of us who grew up well after the McCarthy era will hopefully ever see. Ah…just so you Sunshine…Sen. McCarthy was a raging ass…but he was right. And by the way….the wiretapping issue is not all that important. Your rights are not worth the paper they are printed on if we get hit with a nuclear sneak attack. In fact when that happens (and I believe it will very soon) the only right you’ll have is to shut up and I suggest you start now. If you don’t your name is going on the list of those who aided and abetted the devastating attack on our country right along with most prominent Liberals and Democrats. If I were you I’d spend my time gathering nuts for winter. You’re going to need them.
February 15th, 2006 at 11:15 amBig surprise - Cheney will give an exclusive interview to FOX’s Britte Hume this afternoon.
February 15th, 2006 at 11:16 amWhy does the American mainstream media have to suck so bad!?
February 15th, 2006 at 11:20 amI-Right-I: “If I were you I’d spend my time gathering nuts for winter.” - - No, you can’t come live with me.
February 15th, 2006 at 11:22 amLast night’s NewsHour was amazing in that the “liberal” presentation actually wandered from the far right to slightly right of center. Media people interviewed on that show spoke openly of the frustration people have had for the very secretive closed circle that surrounds this administration.
It’s time to break open that circle of secrecy!
Meanwhile in Australia: New Abu Ghraib images and video have finally been released.
…The new images show “homicide, torture and sexual humiliation”, SBS said…
… One of the videos broadcast on the SBS programme Dateline on Wednesday appears to show prisoners being forced to masturbate to the camera.
Other video footage appears to show a prisoner hitting his head against a wall.
The channel said he was a mentally disturbed patient who became a plaything of guards who practised ways of restraining him.
Some photos are said to show corpses. There are also images of prisoners with body and head wounds…

So there you have it folks. A homo-erotic Bush Administration fantasy came true in Iraq. Are all Republicans this sick and twisted? Republicans (since they control all levels of government) must speak out against the terrible actions performed under Bush’s “command” and in the name of We The People of the USA!
February 15th, 2006 at 11:23 amIt’s sounds to me, little miss IRI, that you are sincerely HOPING for a nuclear attack on the US so that the GOP can kill or imprison those who disagree with them.
February 15th, 2006 at 11:26 amThere’s a fine American patriotic sentiment.
… and I might add, the new revelations of Abu Ghraib were not first shown in the US. What’s wrong with the MSM? Progressives know the answer.
I wish the MSM would should as much energy around getting to the bottom of the Plame case, non-existent WMD, Abramhoff’s greedy connections with KKKarl Rove, Katrina failures, and all the rest of Bush’s Sins as they do this shooting by the Big Dick…

February 15th, 2006 at 11:30 amThis incodent is symptomatic of the big problem. A super secret administratoin doing illegal things. In this case, you have a VP who was probably tanked and shot his bud, in the bigger picture you have an out of control executive spying on Americans. Both happen because they feel not only above the law, but immune, and their secrecy keeps them that way.
February 15th, 2006 at 11:34 amWe will never know if VP Cheney was under the influence of alcohol the day of the shooting, because he did not get tested for that by the sheriffs deputy, since it was 12 hours after the incident on Sunday!
February 15th, 2006 at 11:34 amOnly way to know if Cheney was drunk now is if the female Ambassador would spill the beans on him, which is unlikely!
February 15th, 2006 at 11:38 amIn a rare triple crown feat, Cheney shoots an American citizen, invokes executive priveledge avoiding a sherriff’s report, and then has the phones of every witness wiretapped to check the story’s spread.

Funny how people defending BushCo’s (including the now revealed to have been potentially drunk Dick Cheney) Right To Do Anything They Please fail to equate this with aristocracy, dictatorship, law breaking, or privilege.
February 15th, 2006 at 11:50 amSince the female Swiss Ambassador was a direct witness to everything that happened > she must be interviewed by Texas law enforcement officers and by the press! She is an appointed representative of our government, so she has NO right to remain silent! If she refuses to talk to the press, then she should be removed as Ambassador to Switzerland!
February 15th, 2006 at 11:52 am#29 — Jay: Our ELECTED officials have no right to remain silent, yet they do.
Asking a Bush appointee to be forthright is even a longer shot…unless, of course, Cheney had tried to blame the shooting on HER. Then, of course, she’d testify before Congress and blame Chertoff. ;->
February 15th, 2006 at 11:56 amYes post 31 the Bush officials think they can refuse to talk to anybody, but in this case she has a choice to be a silent patsy for Cheney or to reveal the truth about what really happened on Saturday!

Do you really believe Dick would obey the laws of any state? This administration has already proven they are above the law!!!

February 15th, 2006 at 12:11 pmThe issue of alcohol involving Cheney is and should be a big deal. During many of these hunting activities alcohol is passed around to the participants quite freely. Also, Cheney is, I believe, the only vice-president to charged with DUI, not once but twice. The MSM has been grossly negligent in not pursuing this story.

Thanks Pops. It could be but not likely. The Muslim owned company out of the UAE doesn’t have the contract for the Port of Houston. They do have New York and New Jersey though. I have a feeling that the repercussions of such a disaster would be such that many would prefer to have been at ground zero.

February 15th, 2006 at 1:24 pmOne of the obvious reasons that the Kenedy County Sheriff is whitewashing this, is the fact that the 50,000 acre Armstrong Ranch IS Kenedy County. There are only 414 residents in the entire county and virtually all either work for the Armstrong Ranch or sell to the ranch. The wholly owned Sheriff is not going to rock the boat.
February 15th, 2006 at 2:03 pmCheney being shitfaced seems to fit the story. GW being shitfaced at the same time fits even better.
February 15th, 2006 at 2:34 pmWe’ll never know now if alcohol played a role here, Although Armstrong initially admitted so. But when learning that the tiny town is all beholden to the same ranch owner, it is a guarantee that justice will be subject to self-interest.
February 15th, 2006 at 2:38 pmI think MSNBC should be held accountable for their “scrubbing” the statement in question here from their official transcript.
Their action is not journalism; it is being in the employ of the White House.
And the consolidation of media by corporate bigwigs and their influence is going to get even worse.
Of all the people who bear responsibility for the terrorists attacking us on our soil, the name that should be at the top of the list:
Pres. Bush
He was the “commander in chief” when the report “Osama determined to attack the US” came across his desk, and what did he do? Go on vacation.
When you’re the “commander in chief”, it’s not just the “commander in chief of all the good things that happen in the US”. It’s not “commander in chief of taking more vacations than any other modern president”. It’s not “commander in chief of going to war with countries that have no relationship with al Quida”.
Pres. Bush should take responsibility for his actions, and lack of actions. He does, however, belong to the political party that refuses to take responsibility for any of their actions, and have now become the party of “blame anyone/everyone else but us!”
VPres. Cheney should take responsibility for his shotting someone in the face, but we all know how this will turn out: It’s all Pres. Clinton’s fault!

February 15th, 2006 at 4:03 pm#9 and #10
That is exactly correct. Something the everyday person can grasp and understand, which could end up causing Mr. Cheney a problem.
It’s like the Catholic Bishop in AZ back in 2003. This guy was an arrogant ass, was getting pressure and possible legal charges for transferring pedophile priests, he needed to take responsibility, but was of course not going to. Then, he ran into and killed a street drunk in Phx, didn’t stop, went home, acted like he didn’t know what happened. He got in major trouble, convicted, had to retire. That’s the ticket.
So it takes a simple incident to to take these bastards out.
February 15th, 2006 at 4:31 pmIRI,
How do you like America being “freindly” and Bush holding hands with the wealthy beyond comprehension muslims of Saudi Arabia?
February 15th, 2006 at 4:37 pm[…] Dick Cheney was drinking alcohol the day of the shooting accident. Of course, he says he had only one beer at lunch and that the shooting accident happened at 5pm. But we all know how honest people are when they’ve been busted doing something wrong while drinking. And don’t the cops always add 1 or 2 drinks to whatever you say you had to drink when you’re pulled over for DWI? Is it a coincidence that Cheney refused to be interviewed by the police until the morning after the incident? Yeah, coincidence. […]
February 15th, 2006 at 4:43 pmThis demonstrates once again the arrogance, insensitivity and incompetence of this administration in a way that most folks can understand. It also demonstrates who’s in charge at the White House and it ain’t George W. Bush.

February 15th, 2006 at 5:01 pmI heard recently that IRI was actually a $40 billion super computer at the NSA. It chews 99% CPU for 5 hours to come up with the comedy that we have witnessed, and then disperses it to various forums where it can be absorbed and flamed by real people. Giving the impression of an active internet community of Neo-con supporters. Ever wondered how some people could be so stupid as to support Bush, yet still be smart enough to find a website and a forum such as this?.
We had Chuck Norris calculate the probability of IRI being a bot and he came back with infinity/0.
Cheney is more evil than the Penguin from the batman movies, and just as ugly.

Contrast this with the current misadministration, Led by a “former†coke head/ignoramus/liar and his corporate crony partner ridding shotgun. The VP Shot a man and may have been drunk while doing so. The president lied to the country about his sanctioning of illegal wire tapping. Check the link bellow and click on the third link Jonathan Alter. In this audio recording you will here an excerpt from an April 2004 Bush speech in which he states that all US Government wire taps are performed with the permission of Federal Courts. He told this lie 2 years into the illegal wire tapping program that he authorized.
This is only one of the many lies he and his administration have told, does WMD ring a bell?
