Have you ever noticed how many reports we get on airplane crashes when we have slow news days? There was a handful around the time when JetBlue landed with a twisted wheel, and the plane that didn’t stop and ran into the street killing one person…. it makes me worry how long THIS plane will last in the air.
Northwest fishmongers are famous for their so-called flying fish, and now there really is one.
With great fanfare, Alaska Airlines recently rolled out what it calls the “Salmon-Thirty-Salmon.” Thirty painters worked around the clock for 24 days to paint a 100-foot salmon on a 737 airplane, which went into service today.
The $500,000 paint job is part of a campaign to promote the Alaskan seafood industry, and was paid for by the federal government. It’s a pork project that some are calling “fishy.”
Come on Think Progress, Lt. Col. Anthony Schaffer, a memeber of Able Danger, testified on Tuesday that Able Danger had identified Muhammed Atta 13 times and that there was sufficient intellegence to stop the 9/11 attacks.
1) Waste of money, for sure, but DAMN does it look cool
2) I hope you washed your hands and took some antibiotics after going to the townhall.com site. what a wretched, vile place to link to….

Good point. Hey, TP! Is there some way you could warn us when we’re about to wade into excrement? Just let us know where the link you’re providing is going to take us, that’s all. Thanks.
that’s not a 747, as the link says… those have that hump behind the cockpit, which is actually a second level… anyway, I hope this thing doesn’t smell like one…
Think Progess, just change your link to the one I have in my post and then nobody has to go to townhall.com and they will actually get some info, pictures and video.
Interesting that townhall links to this document from the Republican Study Committee, on the House of Reps site, which slams these paint jobs. So, who voted for them?
“2) I hope you washed your hands and took some antibiotics after going to the townhall.com site. what a wretched, vile place to link to….”
really, TP – please give a warning about this kind of thing…
even my Safari gave me a warning, but as soon as i read “townhall”, the warning window went away and the sight popped up…couldn’t get out of there fast enough…
And Republicans are mainly responsible for this waste…
Isn’t it about time they STOP telling us they are fiscally conservative, when their actions are clearly not.
Our country’s priorities are not healthcare, education, retirement/pension, environment, nuclear proliferation/terrorism, energy alternatives but painting a fish on a airplane. Good going Congress!
This why people get mad at paying taxes. It isn’t the taxes themselves, since we all know they are needed for a civil society. But it the conplexing of the tax system, coupled with the waste.
Personally, I think it’s a highly cost-effective way of promoting wild Alaskan salmon vs. the crappy-tasting, eco-unfriendly Norwegian- and lately BC-farmed salmon that has taken away much of the market. Promoting US products is fairly standard procedure for the USG (as well as other governments). Increased sales for Alaskan salmon would (a) help protect US West Coast salmon threatened by disease, etc., from BC-farmed Atlantic salmon; (b) provide a better living/more jobs for Alaska’s salmon fishing industry (fishermen, canners, ships chandlers), all of which have suffered because of crappy imported farmed salmon; and (c) reduce the trade deficit (though admittedly not by much). Those of us who really know salmon would never buy or eat the farmed stuff.
Shouldn’t that salmon have the head of Sen. Ted Stevens?
February 16th, 2006 at 12:06 pmwtf? How many people could be housed in New Orleans for that?

#4 Agreed, Spudge. There’s a lot of important things to be discussed before they are swept under the Republican rug.

Our buddy Ted Stevens. Who did he do it for, his son Ben Stevens, who is on the Alaska Fisheries Marketing Board (AFMB).
Okay, time to move on.

They aren’t tax and spend; they are borrow from the children and grandchildren and spend like hell.
