Sen. Chuck Hagel (R-NE) and Sen. Olympia Snowe (R-ME) talked a big game about standing on principle and demanding a congressional investigation of Bush’s warrantless domestic surveillance.
Snowe, 12/21/05:
Revelations that the U.S. government has conducted domestic electronic surveillance without express legal authority indeed warrants Congressional examination. I believe the Congress - as a coequal branch of government - must immediately and expeditiously review the use of this practice.
Hagel, 12/21/05:
Hagel and four other members of the Intelligence Committee have called for a joint probe with the Senate Judiciary Committee to determine the extent of the domestic surveillance and whether the president had legal authority to order it without court approval…Asked about Vice President Dick Cheney’s warning that Bush’s critics could pay a heavy political price, Hagel said: “My oath is to the Constitution, not to a vice president, a president or a political party.â€
Yesterday, when it counted, both Senators folded. Sen. Jay Rockefeller (D-WV) introduced a motion to start an investigation. Snowe and Hagel, after an intense lobbying campaign by Vice President Cheney, sided with Chairman Pat Roberts (R-KS) and voted to adjourn the committee without even considering Rockefeller’s motion. The motion to adjourn passed on a party-line vote.
Actions speak louder than words.

Sick of it all.
February 17th, 2006 at 4:35 pmWas the Hunting acident a warning?
February 17th, 2006 at 4:39 pmWhat did Cheney say to them in the meeting that was closed to Democrats?
February 17th, 2006 at 4:43 pm#3 - Probably, “IF you vote ‘yes’, then I’ll include you on the next hunting trip!”
So much for Republicans and their so-called ethics!
February 17th, 2006 at 4:46 pmhttp://www.tompaine.com/ articles/ 2006/ 02/ 17/ rumsfelds_pet_tyrants.php
Rummy’s back!
When it comes to “the war on terror,” North African governments can teach even U.S. Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld a thing or two. And Rumsfeld seems to have been in a mood to listen on his sweep through Tunisia, Algeria and Morocco earlier this week. “Each country has been, in its way, providing moderate leadership and been constructive in…the struggle against violent extremism,” he said at the outset of his trip. “It’s something we value and want to strengthen.”…
…Throughout the 1990s, the “eradicators” fought the Islamist insurgency with a ferocity and determination that might have made even Washington’s eradicators blush. More than 6,000 people are known to have been abducted by agents of the state, their fate still unknown…”
February 17th, 2006 at 4:46 pmBased on what you have heard or read, do you think George W. Bush definitely broke the law, probably broke the law, probably did not break the law, or definitely did not break the law?
According to the latest CNN/Gallup poll most Americans think Bush didn’t bread the law. Liberals are losing on this issue. Time to give it up.
February 17th, 2006 at 4:48 pmThe problem with intelligence gathering is without strict oversight, the advisors become the masters. You can cite historical precedent, or look no further than this administration.
If knowledge is power, then unlimited power to acquire and distribute knowledge under a blanket authority is… scary.
February 17th, 2006 at 4:52 pmLike lemmings to the sea … the whole buch of ‘em. And, they says Progressives don’t have any values? Gimme a break!
February 17th, 2006 at 4:54 pmFlip-floppin’ terrorist lovers. Anti-American communists. Castrated spineless cowards.
These people are weak on the defense of the Constitution.
February 17th, 2006 at 4:55 pmThey are a mob. I have no doubt that Hagel has been threatened. I swear.
February 17th, 2006 at 4:56 pmSEIG HEIL!!!THE REPUBLICAN REICHSTAG ENDORSES THE FUHRER’S WILL!
February 17th, 2006 at 4:56 pmI think it ironic that Rumsfeld is reported to have said today that we are losing the pr war to the terrorists. Of course he is defending planted stories as the way to reverse this situation. For what it is worth, I think America could win the pr war if we adhered to the rule of law, if we had transparancy in government, if we did not torture, if we did not hold people indefinetly without chrage apart from some one’s detrmination that they were enemy combatants etc. The previous post is right. We should give it up–the terrorists have won, we have become like them and America is no longer the land of freedom
February 17th, 2006 at 4:57 pmThere are no moderates in the GOP. Either you a “kult of bush” or an enabler of the kult.
February 17th, 2006 at 4:57 pmMaybe so, but until we start making the NASCAR rubes feel good about themselves, they will beat us in elections.
That’s the real secret. People vote on ego.
February 17th, 2006 at 4:57 pmThe law, last I looked, doesn’t depend on public opinion for it veracity. The only people that will lose if the Congress ignores this issue is the people of the United States of America, not “liberals”. It used to be that people who believed in this country spanned the political gamut. Now it seems that the conservatives don’t give a damn about the country, the Constitution or the law, only about King George the Great!
February 17th, 2006 at 4:57 pmdr. steenkenhammergh, say the word “Bush” and quickly look down. Do you see a little bulge in your pants?
6. dr s … perhaps GW didn’t “bread the law” but he sure did fry it!
February 17th, 2006 at 4:57 pmJust saw this poll on AOL .If I were a republican running for office again I think I would “Shoot” for congress to act like a Congress ,cause it just doesn’t look good for these Republicans re election . As Follows:
How does the wiretap issue impact your vote?
More likely to vote Democratic 89%
More likely to vote Republican 11%
How concerned are you over the eavesdropping program?
Very 81%
Not at all 11%
Somewhat 8%
Total Votes: 719
Note on Poll Results
Ok Republicans I would “Strongly” suggest you act how the Consitution Instructs you,Civil rights and The Damn Laws and Impeach these gizzards!(I would never eat’em they look nasty and hold trash)
February 17th, 2006 at 4:59 pmdr. stinkyburger,
February 17th, 2006 at 5:01 pmI am stunned you are proud of your party even as they take away your rights. Amazing to me.
why do they let these people get to them behind closed doors?
February 17th, 2006 at 5:01 pmI believe someone posted this on a different thread.
It seems appropriate for this one as well.

It’s the money, just ask “Spector” the mod.
February 17th, 2006 at 5:02 pmWell, in a way, this is kind of a win.
By allowing the executive branch to castrate the legislative branch, we now only have to worry about the Republican administration and we can ignore the weak and pointless Congress.
They just basically said, “Go ahead, President Cheney/Bush. Do whatever you want, we’ll let you get away with it.”
Our only hope is the judicial branch. What are the chances of suing the federal government on this?
February 17th, 2006 at 5:03 pmIt’s not republicans that want to take away your rights, it’s tha alqaeda types that will…by killing us.
February 17th, 2006 at 5:05 pm#6 - Link? Or another mendacity from the talking heads?
And here I thought the Republicans didn’t care about polls!
How about this poll:
Pres. Bush approval/disapproval: 40% Approve / 57% Disapprove
http://www.pollingreport.com/BushJob.htm
Or, how about this one:
The poll was conducted by Zogby International, the highly-regarded non-partisan polling company.
The poll interviewed 1,216 U.S. adults from January 9-12. The poll found that 52% agreed with the statement:
‘If President Bush wiretapped American citizens without the approval of a judge, do you agree or disagree that Congress should consider holding him accountable through impeachment.’
43% disagreed, and 6% said they didn’t know or declined to answer.
http://www.democrats.com/bush-impeachment-poll-2
So, 52% say Pres. Bush should be impeached if he broke the FISA law, which he did.
So, where’s YOUR link???
February 17th, 2006 at 5:05 pmBobcat
There was a ruling against the Administration just on that topic (NSA wire tap). However, it will be appealed and dragged out for years.

February 17th, 2006 at 5:06 pm#8 - Lemmings. As soon as I heard about this meeting, I pictured the senators leaving it with dazed expressions on their faces, babbling quietly to themselves, and chewing on their lips. Like zombies.

February 17th, 2006 at 5:07 pmCitizen80203 -
Wasn’t that just that the Justice Department had to release their lawyer’s justification for allowing the Prez to authorize it?
I’d like to see someone actually bring a lawsuit that challenged the fact that wiretaps were illegally issued without warrents or probable cause.
I guess we’d need someone who this actually happened to, though. And I bet you just don’t get a letter in the mail letting you know that you were “wiretapped last week and all’s clear. Sorry about that.”
February 17th, 2006 at 5:09 pm29:

February 17th, 2006 at 5:19 pm#29 - So, what you’re saying is you can’t pony up a link because. . . . ..
1 - You’re too stupid to post a link to your proof.
2 - Your ‘proof’ doesn’t exist and you can’t admit it.
3 - Your ‘proof’ exists and it doesn’t really say what you claim.
4 - Your ‘proof’ exists, but. . . Hmmm. . . . But. . . . . You don’t know HOW to link to a report! Yup! THAT’S it!
Yet another troll that can’t back up his/her story.

I guess that you still don’t understand the concept between spying on terrorists and spying on Americans? Let me explain it to you.
Terrorists are people who want to hurt other people.
Americans are people who live withing the Country United States of America and who were born or naturalized in America.
Now the issue is not that Bush is spying on the terrorists. The issue is that he is spying on AMERICANS.
Understand? Probably not.

The sad thing is, Bush has used this “tool” to hunt his political enemies. They are probably trolling this site waiting murder their opponents.
February 17th, 2006 at 5:26 pmThe CNN/Gallup poll was posted as of 2/14/06 and 49% though GWB either probably or definitely broke the law in the wiretapping. 47% said he definitely didn’t or probably didn’t break the law. 4% had no opinion, the sample was 508 people and the error was 5%
February 17th, 2006 at 5:26 pmSupport for surveillance measures, government secrecy down from 9/11 aftermath, new Zogby Interactive poll shows
The President’s vigorous defense of an anti-terror surveillance program may be a hard sell to a public obsessed with privacy and civil liberties, a new Zogby Interactive poll suggests.
The survey of 13,456 likely voters finds Americans largely unwilling to surrender civil liberties – even if it’s to prevent terrorists from carrying out attacks – a significant departure from their views in the months immediately after the 9/11 terror attacks. …
Two sensitive privacy issues associated with the President’s communications surveillance program, however, scored worst of all. Just 28% are willing to allow their telephone conversations to be monitored, and 25% favor allowing random searches of mail. …

February 17th, 2006 at 5:27 pmThat damn koolaid will kill your brains everytime. Snowe, Hagel remember: “NO GUTS, NO GLORY.” STAND FOR THE TRUTH OR FALL FOR ANYTHING.
February 17th, 2006 at 5:28 pm40. Those numbers sound sorta different from what the eminent dr s was spouting. No wonder he didn’t want to give us proof or a link.
February 17th, 2006 at 5:29 pmI think Specter is still having a second day of hearings but for so long as the administration keeps the details hidden, then the message of it’s only Al Qaeda will continue to dominate.
February 17th, 2006 at 5:29 pmNo details,no worry.
Because no other link is being provided, I did a search on “2006 CNN/Gallup poll”, and got the following:

This is typical of the “kult of bush”. Say “majority” of Americans when it is actually just a majority of the kult.
Glen Greenwald has done some excellent blogging on this, check him out: http://glenngreenwald.blogspot.com/
February 17th, 2006 at 5:32 pmWhat is the definition of one party rule without checks or balances. If anyone can answer this question then they know where we stand as a democracy today. It looks as if the end is near.
February 17th, 2006 at 5:34 pm#41,
Thats why we need another Terr’ist attack, gitem back inline.
February 17th, 2006 at 5:35 pmI’ve been reading Greenwald, but without the Senate hearings, only the lawsuits have a chance of getting at the details of the program. That, however,is likely to take a very long time.
Unless there is a committee chair to call for an investigation in Congress, the NSA story won’t go far.
In the additional congressional briefings, were there no Democrats? Although they have likely been sworn not to reveal details of the program, were none of them able to come forth and say whether they were satisfied with what they heard? I can’t believe they were sworn to silence. Or is the code of Omerta now the basic communication style for congress?

Did you read today’s post? It really puts it back in perspective. This NSA is only two months old! It will take fight and time to cuff these skels. But, we must keep up hope and be vicious in our fight. Say what you mean and say it mean. We are the true warriors of the party, so slap another clip in and aim for the chest.

Absolutely - corrupt Dems need to go as well.
February 17th, 2006 at 6:07 pmGuys
The Nazi tags are a bit pre-mature. The “kult of Bush” is a true minority. 1932 Germany Nazi’s had a vast majority of the population behind them. Not that we don’t have cause for concern here, but the kult is at most 30% of our population. Now, we could face serious fucking problems with another 9/11 style attack, but I think that would cause a serious backlash from the “I trust the GOP to protect me, but fucking twice” crowd.
February 17th, 2006 at 6:09 pm#23 - stinky burger. - “al qaeda types”???
do you even know how many different groups in Iraq are fighting for or against a certain cause.
there’s no such thing as insurgents and civilians.
there were over 100 political groups in Iraq’s ‘election’ and now people, from their respective parties, are fighting against what they feel is a US backed puppet government.
pull your head out of Bush’s ass and wake up.
they ‘al qaeda types’ (LOL) don’t want to take our rights away…they simply want to have their own rights
and not be tortured for standing up against
the beast that is US foreign policy.
9/11 happened for a reason. not because they ‘hate our liberty and freedom’ as bush always says.
this doesnt justify the atrocity of 9/11..but know that this administration needs people like you to be mindless for their cause to come to fruition.
February 17th, 2006 at 6:12 pmDemand THEY stand up for America and NOW OR resign immediately too! Demand they change their minds or face the Rath of American’s! Call their damn offices off the hook and tell them that they took and OATH to defend the American people and our nation AGAINST ALL ENEMIES,FORIEGN AND DOMESTIC! Ring their damn phones off the hook on Monday and this weekend! Call ALL of Congress and demand a REAL independent investigation into wiretapping and NOT the sham of a so-called “independent” commission like the joke of a one like 9-11,either where Bush got to hand pick the commission which as BUSHIT as he/they were behind 9-11, folks! Let’s don’t have another phony commission that covers up this crap and demand immediate removal of them! We ALREADY know they are guilty as hell in illegal wiretapping, we don’t need another phony commission on this crap! Demand they be arrested immediately for TREASON, illegally wiretapping and war profiteering and war criminals, and lying to take us to illegal, immoral wars! And NO more $$ for wars, period! This war on “terrorism” is bogus,WHY haven’t we caught Bin Laden? Why not? He invites a KNOWN terrorist to hear his state of Union speech yet has Cindy Sheenan arrested for exercising her Constitutional rights! He has called our Constitution a “Goddamn piece of Paper!” They all need to be removed ASAP! And NOW!
February 17th, 2006 at 6:27 pmHagel and Snowe should never be trusted. They get easily sucked up by Darth Cheney. He must have pulled a rifle at them.
February 17th, 2006 at 6:30 pmWrong #6! It is NEVER wrong to stand up for our Constitution and against tyranny! We who know what he/they did MUST get the word out! And NOW! Do you want him to shred our Constitution more just because afraid sheep are being brainwashed? I don’t think so! It is NEVER wrong to defend our Constitution AGAINST anyone, including a lying, fascist murdering President and his cohorts who are literally destroying America from within! CALL those two Senators and DEMAND they defend America or get the hell out of Congress and resign and NOW! Tell them they took an oath of office to defend America against ALL enemies, including domestic enemies! And to also defend our Constitution too! And make damn sure any commission is truly independent and not the sham we had on 9-11! We KNOW they are guilt as hell over this and other things and urge Congress to support Hillary’s bill demanding NO sell of our ports to ANY foreigners! IMMEDIATELY before the sale becomes final on March 2nd!
February 17th, 2006 at 6:33 pm#64, I agree with Citizen, the Nazis were in a different league. Not all fascists turned out to be Nazis, but all Nazis were fascists. Now, I have a hard time thinking that a second 9-11 would work against the Busheviks. The tactics of suppressing their role in 9-11 blunders and in a serious investigation of Iraq intelligence worked for them the first time. I think another large attack will serve more as a ‘burned Reichstag’ than a wake-up call to Bushevik incompetence.
February 17th, 2006 at 6:44 pmYeah, heads will roll as soon as the second part of the SSCI report on Iraq intelligence comes out. Or as soon as the press corps can figure out what deficits mean ,or Medicare or…..never.

Actually, I would be happy with a slow miserable death from veinous bleeding. F*ck impeachemnt, just grinding them up with hearings till early 08, then charges of impeachment.
But for that to happen, the 06 midterms have got to swing our way. Not just pick ups, but control of either or both houses. Long shot, but more doable day by day.
February 17th, 2006 at 6:56 pmTerry
You may be correct. But somehow I really think the majority of Americans are feeling a little “shot in the face by bush” now. Hard to predict how possible future events will unfold.

February 17th, 2006 at 7:00 pmCitizen, my data point is the Iran noise machine that we can hear all around us and how well it is working. Here’s the state of the game
February 17th, 2006 at 7:07 pm[…] I knew you were really just a bitch in wolf’s clothing. Sen. Chuck Hagel has been all talk lately, questioning the war in Iraq, and standing firm against the NSA wire-tapping. But when push came to shove (ie. Cheney came knocking) Hagel wouldn’t even allow a motion to vote whether to start an investigation into the wire-tapping. […]
February 17th, 2006 at 7:23 pmHagel and Snowe cave in, vote against Bush wiretap investigation…
*Sigh*…
February 17th, 2006 at 8:06 pmNothing left but to the barricades….
February 17th, 2006 at 8:09 pmThe Zogby poll results had this result I found interesting…
Those who favor Pre-emptive nuclear strike against Iran 24%.
Are we living in a country of morons?
February 17th, 2006 at 8:17 pmone out of four US citizens are so scared already by the Bush wardrums that they favor just going in and dropping nukes on Iran.
February 17th, 2006 at 8:22 pmIncredible.
Unbelievable.
one out of four!~
What has happened to people? What kind of fear drives people to such arrogant attitudes? And if 25 percent of Americans feel that way about Iran, imagine how the Iranians feel about us.
February 17th, 2006 at 8:27 pmYou know, maybe this species is not really worth saving, even if it’s possible.
There is absolutely no reason for any Senator of either party to do anything that VP Cheney demands, unless he has threatened to shoot them like he did to Harry Whittington!
February 17th, 2006 at 9:11 pmI’ll bet this: thi Iran card has been played, and worked.

February 17th, 2006 at 10:03 pmPutting party above the Constitution is treason to the America I have come to know and love. Honorable Republican Senators and Representatives should be carrying out their Constitutional powers uncompromisingly in their pursuit of Executive oversight. I fear the Bush Administration has blighted our bodypolitik beyond democratic recognition, and any law-abiding legislator or jurist who acquiesces to such Executive ascendancy is complicitous as we bare witness to the malodorous transition into an authoritarian state. Vote the Rascals out early and often in ‘06 and ‘08. -Kevo
February 17th, 2006 at 10:59 pmSenator Hagel a few days ago was talking tough to Bush, but ends up he is a coward who just bluffs! He is so frightened of Cheney that you would think he got shot not Harry > lol.

I thought Senator Lieberman was a super Bush butt kisser, but those 2 Repub Senators has Old Joe beat!!!
February 17th, 2006 at 11:30 pmRepublicans in Congress are Chicken Sparrows being led by Chicken Hawks. Eventually, the label ‘Republican’ will be synonymous to the label ‘Tory’- the same kind of traitorous people our that the Founding Fathers had to deal with 250+ years ago.

As long as the Excutive branch is allowed to twist arms and and turn our democracy into a bribery fest I’m afraid that the laws wont matter anymore.
Does anyone know if these actions are against the law or ethics or anything?
February 18th, 2006 at 11:38 amSenator Pat Roberts is the dumbest Bush toady in the Senate! He reeks of corruption, so every patriot in America must put pressure on him to resign! Show him NO mercy!!!
February 18th, 2006 at 12:38 pmI was in a family for more than 26 years who joined Organized Crime associated with Politcal Corruption. Thier invovlement includes Federal Political Corruption. You need to know that WIRETAPPING is IMPORTANT because it helps them SECURE and MANAGE their Criminal Operations. Without it, they wouldn’t have an edge over those trying to put a stop to them. Behavior says everything about what intentions exist. Not wanting to allow a probe into what appears to be criminal activity, certainly means more are involved — look at those who are trying to stop the probe!
February 18th, 2006 at 4:23 pmBush has his base of 40%. He has the house, the senate and the judiciary.
Believe it or not folks, that is all he needs. The good old USA and the amurkan people are screwed through and through by a man who is unpopular, nuts, ignorant, with an I the same as his shoe size and there is not a damn thing you can do about it.
One light in the forest. The elections are coming up. It is the only way to defeat him, at the ballot box and hope like hell Diebold is not looking.
February 18th, 2006 at 6:16 pmSenator Hagel has been proven to be a big talker, but he is actually a wuss who is terrified of VP Dick Cheney! Any senator who is afraid of Cheney is worthless and must resign!

February 19th, 2006 at 1:37 pmThat would be every Republican in Congress, as of today.
One-party rule. Ain’t it great?
Vote them all out, but Conyers, Feingold, and a few others. All R’s thirst for power and most D’s just cave. The only REAL articles come from the internet as the MSM are worthless for the truth and just add their spin. Unreal how far this country has fallen is 5 years. Can it tolerate another three before everything is “privatized” for the profits of Bush/Cheney/cronies. The elite reap billions, and the average American can hardly pay their fuel bills. There will be serious revolt unless policies change (or Americans become more apathetic). Hard to believe Congress is in lock-step with all Bush proposes. War, torture, renditions, Gestapo Supreme Court judges, all furthering their agenda. That bodes not well for civil liberties or rights provided by the Constitution. Also, look at the damage caused to the environment by an “administration” who always backs polluters (especially big corporations). He is a madman who is out of touch with reality. He is a mere puppet for a much larger cause, just as Reagan was. It is our government, elected by the people (supposedly). We are killing innocent Iraq civilians and consider them “collateral damage”. Bush/Cheney do not know war. They are willing to send our sons and daughters , but, of course, never served in war themselves, when they could. They trash the Constitution and try to undo all the good of FDR and LBJ, (social nets that Bush is destroying). He wants to open borders and drive American jobs lower while overburdening all education and health care. What the hell is going on? This “war on terror” is bogus. I would rather retain my civil rights than be afraid everyday that some “insurgent” will be trying to bomb me. Bush fuels the insurgency just by being there. What is the sense of one more American or Iraq dying? Yes, for Bush’s oil. He has made us more dependent on oil in the past five years. He owns gas and oil stock, why would he want to change? With Diebold controlling the voting machines and has been proved it is easy to hack, it is apparent how the elections are won. Look at 2000. Gore won the popular vote, If they would have counted ALL precincts in Florida he would have won. I hope Americans wake up soon, because there are dire consequences and millions of lives in the balance. By the time Bush is found out for what he really is, his minions of Alito and Roberts will keep continuing to serve the remainder of their lives. There is no opposition. I used to be a proud Democrat, and a liberal, but I feel abandoned as not many stand up for my views. The whole damned party has swung to the right. Thanks for listening.
February 20th, 2006 at 10:32 pmRe Hagel ‘caving’ in… It’s important to note that the motion to adjorn is just a temporary procedural vote. Gives Hagel and Snowe time to work out a compromise. A vote however, will take place at the next intel business meeting no matter what. That’s when we’ll really see what will happen.
Also it’s important to note that Senate Intelligence Committee investigations are basically worthless and untimely. Remember phaseII of the Iraq Prewar intelligence and the march to war? They haven’t even completed that — and remember, Roberts promised to finish it after the Dems/Reid raised a fuss with the Senate closed-session in the Fall.
February 21st, 2006 at 9:50 pm[…] I knew you were really just a bitch in wolf’s clothing. […]
April 4th, 2006 at 10:45 am[…] Moving along, Senate GOP members showed who actually guides their policy decisions, from Think Progress: Yesterday, when it counted, both Senators [Hagel and Snowe] folded. Snowe and Hagel, after an intense lobbying campaign by Vice President Cheney, sided with Chairman Pat Roberts (R-KS) and voted to adjourn the committee without even considering Rockefeller’s motion.
