CEO Bruce Gordon: “Shouldn’t people involuntarily relocated outside of New Orleans be capable of voting for candidates in their hometown? We shouldn’t penalize people who were forced to relocate to temporary homes, whether in Louisiana or in cities like Houston and Atlanta.”
According to the Times-Picayune articles,10 satellite voter centers have been set up for displaced voters who have not registered where they now live. The bill passed the Senate on Friday. There is a sense that mail-in ballots would not be fraud proof, these satellite centers would have the voters show up in person.
Another T-P article claimed it would cost $1.8 million to provide notice to the displaced voters and the state wants FEMA to pick up the cost.
ACORN and the ACLU already have a lawsuit underway on this issue.
February 18th, 2006 at 9:14 pmOMFG!
I knew that this would happen. This is why FEMA is dragging it’s feet on bringing trailers, which are already padi for, to the victims. It is why they want to turn most of the poor neighborhoods into “green space.”
They are trying to turn LA into a red state.
This needs to stop, but you know Mary Landrieu is probably already signed on to keep the Democratic voters out until after the election.
This is sickening.
February 18th, 2006 at 11:42 pmPolitics in Louisiana has never been sparkly clean, and it’s only going to get worse.
February 19th, 2006 at 12:01 amSpudge, you are most likely correct.
of course they should be able to vote in their home town, but i’m certain that the repuglycans won’t allow it. don’t be surprised is tom delay is doing some long-distance gerrymandering for the GOP.
you know, if the Repuglycans win in Louisiana, especially New Orleans, the elections will DEFINITELY have been rigged.
February 19th, 2006 at 12:48 amthanks for bringing this topic up. i have been wondering about this ever since I saw everyone being shipped out of New Orleans right after Katrina.
February 19th, 2006 at 12:50 ambanana,
I am working up a blog on this right now, but you are correct. This was the plan all along. spread the blue voters out amongst the red ones to dilute their vote.
February 19th, 2006 at 1:55 amThat would be even more complicated. Hate to be rude here, but I suspect a fair number of those relocated people (75 percent) were not voters to begin with.

February 19th, 2006 at 7:59 am“They are trying to turn LA into a red state.”
Whoa! Wait one second Spudge Boy and the rest of you. I’m caucasian, and I live in New Orleans. First, Lousiana is a red state. New Orleans is a big blue city with around 76% voting Democrat (see 2004 presidential). The majority of the population here are Democrats — yes, even the white ones. So, there’s no big threat of New Orleans turning red. It’s a silly assertion based on a false premise — you can do better Spudge Boy!
The current mayor, Ray Nagin, had overwhelming support from the white voters both pre and post-Katrina — until the “Chocolate City” comments. He won his elected seat largely because of the white vote. Despite the fact that our city is comprised of a dominant black population (68%), many elections are decided by the white voters (simply because we vote more often).
February 19th, 2006 at 9:05 am#2, You got it! As time goes on it is more clear what the plan was since the levees broke.
February 19th, 2006 at 12:23 pmNice blog, SpudgeBoy
February 19th, 2006 at 12:26 pmI didn’t realize until recently that you had one yourself.
My early thought on this was similar to others expressed here. Sure, most of LA may have been Republican prior to Katrina, but I bet a lot of folks are leaning against this administration based on their lack of actions in the aftermath of the devastation. Seems quite risky that LA remains as red as it was a year ago. Possibly the concern is those who have changed allegiance, coupled with those who remain Dem, might just swing the state. Given that, Repubs need to keep out as many Dem voters as possible to avoid losing the state. Wonder how long it will take TX to pass laws so LA voters can’t cast ballots there unless they prove they’re staying in state indefinitely? Turning TX blue would be devastating for Repubs.
February 19th, 2006 at 1:37 pmSpudge_Boy: “I knew that this would happen. This is why FEMA is dragging it’s feet on bringing trailers, which are already padi for, to the victims.
They are trying to turn LA into a red state.”
Marie: “You got it! As time goes on it is more clear what the plan was since the levees broke.”
Marie: Again, I live New Orleans, and I’m a Liberal Democrat. What do you percieve the plan to be? It’s quite clear that the plan is NOT to turn Louisiana into a red state, as it already is a red state. Do you believe that FEMA is intentionally keeping black voters out so that New Orleans will vote for Republicans? What would be the gain for this massive conspiracy?
Yet another popular conspiracy is that the levee in the Lower 9th was blown up by explosives. If you have the opportunity to go there, it will become abundantly clear that it was a massive barge, not explosives, that caused the levee breach. The better question to ask is why the “Mr. Go” (Mississippi River Gulf Outlet) was built in the first place. Had this useless project never been built, the Lower 9th would have never been on the news.
And let’s not forget that the flooding in New Orleans destroyed the bastions of the white population — Lakeview and the 17th Street canal.
The reality is that FEMA was made completely dysfunctional when Rove decided to reorganize it. Additionally, New Orleans is not the only place having problems with FEMA. Both Mississippi and Alabama are having similar issues — and they are both red states as well.
If anything has resulted from FEMA’s ineptitude, it has been that conservatives and republicans on the Gulf Coast are beginning to realize that our government cannot even protect us when there are advanced warnings of a threat being shown on the weather channel.
If you want to be outraged by something, consider this:
* New Orleans has always been ignored by the U.S. government.
* New Orleans is the port for most of the nation’s oil. The Port of New Orleans is the largest U.S. port for several major commodities including rubber, cement and coffee.
* Nearly two-thirds of the country’s grain exports are shipped through New Orleans ports.
* 1 million acres of coastal islands and marshland vanished in Louisiana in the last century because of human interference. This alone could spell the end of New Orleans.
And how does New Orleans benefit from all of this? Simply put, We don’t. Louisian receives a fraction of the billions of dollars the federal government gets from the offshore leases and activities each year, while interior states get half of the royalties from drilling on their land. Doesn’t make much sense to me considering that Louisiana provides provides vital infrastructure used by the oil and gas industry, and because wetlands have been damaged by the deep canals carved into Louisiana’s marshes and dredging by the industry.
And now the last straw, Bush and his gang of idiots want to sell our ports to Dubai.
Please folks, there’s enough wrong being done to this state and city without pushing conspiracy theories.
February 19th, 2006 at 9:42 pmHow is it that our government can arrange it so that Iraqi’s living in the US are able to participate in the elections in Iraq, but feels that it is far to difficult to make it possible for displaced people to vote in their home districts, and their General Elections? After the mess they created, it’s the very least they could do. But knowing this bunch…..
