DeLay Writes Letters: It’s “Absolutely Untrue” That Abramoff Was “A Close Friend”»

A handwritten letter from DeLay to his constituents, 2/6/06:

Where would anyone get the crazy idea that DeLay was close friends with Abramoff?

DeLay, Northern Mariana Islands, 1997:

When one of my closest and dearest friends, Jack Abramoff, your most able representative in Washington, D.C., invited me to the islands, I wanted to see firsthand the free-market success and the progress and reform you have made.

DeLay’s campaign to rehabilitate his credibility isn’t off to a good start.

  9. Flamethrower Says:

He was not a close friend.

He was a close and dear friend.

You just don’t know how to parse.

  10. MagnumDB Says:

Wow… not only is DeLay lying that he was never Abramoff’s friend, he is also lying that Abramoff never had any influence on him - since clearly DeLay took a trip to “the islands” when asked.

Reminds me of Gov. Schwarzenegger and the stories he used to tell about having orgies and smoking pot.

Then, when he was considering the Governorship of CA, he said he had to tell lies in order to meet the expectations of weightlifters back in-the-day.

So, was he lying then to satisfy the public, or was he lying about telling lies to satisfy the public?

  15. Inverse Room Says:

That doesn’t look handwritten at all–it looks like it’s printed from a custom handwriting font. Every “f,” for instance, is identical.

  16. Grand Moff Texan Says:

The only reason Tom DeLay isn’t admitting that Abramoff is his close friend is because DeLay hasn’t been paid to say that yet.
    .

  17. afterthought Says:

Maybe you just have to pay DeLay loads
of money to be “one of my closest and dearest friends”, and once you don’t pay anymore
you are “not close personal friends”?
Sort of a friendship “lease” arrangement one
    might say.

  18. Chris Says:

Is this a bad joke? Sorry, but that’s not handwritten, it’s clearly a computer font. Notice how all instances of a given letter are identical - look at the lowercase Y’s for example. Or, check out the word “with” in the first and second paragraphs, no one writes that consistently. And after laserprinting, it was scanned at a slight angle for effect.

    Are we being played here?

  19. Big Al Says:

As the saying goes, with “close” and “dear” friends such as Tom DeLay, Jack Abramoff doesn’t need any enemies. The incredible part of all of this story is that Jack Abramoff is coming off as the “nice guy” of all of his cohorts in Congress.

  20. Punchy Says:

holy sh!t…how am I supposed to compete with all this great snark?

by the way, that’s NOT handwritten. Every letter looks absolutely identical to itself. Of course, it’s hard to type when you’re the Neanderthal that lacks opposible thumbs…

  21. Buckley Roberts Says:

I’m sure the committe DeLay is in charge of that is investigating this matter will clear everything up.

  22. ne-right-ne Says:

#16 you may be onto something. All the letters look similiar. Who’s the true source of this letter?

  23. Ecostar Says:

Inverse is right. If you look at all of the letters they are too similar to one another to be anything other than a custom handwritting font.

I doubt many Constituents will notice, however. And to think they will assume they received a copy of a genuine handwritten letter. Clever on his part. Slimy, but clever.

  26. SL Aronovitz Says:

DeLay is trying to cut his ties with Abramoff because of the Abramoff trial. DeLay knows Abramoff will be using his name ‘liberally’ throughout. DeLay’s constituents could care less about his Abramoff connections. In their twisted minds, any means by which the Neocons maintain power is justified.

  27. Dumb Fox Says:

Can I speculate on what went before and after this excerpt…

    Dear Friend,

You may have heard about my run-in with the law. Actually, it’s a run-in with runaway DA with a partisan agenda to stop me breaking the law, and no big deal really, except it’s a complete drag on my time on K Street. And I might also get 10 years depending on how things pan out, so it could be a big deal and I need your help to make it go away.

The more help I get, the better lawyer I can afford, so dig deep, show me some love, and ensure I don’t go the way of that idiot Duke Cunningham whose shoes I filled on the Defense Appropriation Committee. I assure you, with my hands still on the purse strings, you won’t regret your decision to support me in my hour of need.

Now you will hear Jack Abramoff’s name tossed about in the months to come. Ignore it. This relates to an entirely unrelated legal matter, which from the moment Jack was indicted, has nothing to do with me. You will hear many facts dressed up as smears, truths which I can prove are spurious allegations. Just trust me.

    …A final word on Jack… etc etc…

So friend, thank you for taking the time to read this, but please, give generously to me your loyal Congressman and humble servant. Remember, if you save my bacon, you’ll get your pork.

    Love and kisses,
    Tom

  28. Gerald Gibson Says:

Isn’t there a little voice in the back of their minds reminding them as they speak of the things they said in the past so they know how to correctly explain what they mean? And if so wouldn’t they know that they are contradicting themselves? It is better to remain silent than to publicly provide proof that you are a liar. Well then again … it depends on your audience doesn’t it … America needs education based on scientifically proven cognative human learning techniques…this crop of people in America today should be able to see past this stuff.

  29. afterthought Says:

I think I agree it looks like “fake” hand-written,
but I suspect that is what was sent to his constituents
since scanning and them dealing with an image is
a pain compared to just faking the font, but what
    do I know.
If it was sent by DeLay, I don’t see that fake
versus real hand-writing makes any difference.
It is not like it was a personal letter to
each person or something, i.e., either way it
was a “copied” mass mailing, or am I missing
the point somewhere (other than it not actually
    being “hand-written”)?

  30. Zookeeper Says:

#19 - Are we being played here?
Um, yes. Well spotted on the computer font.

  31. WC Says:

    #16

Good catch. But, couldn’t his handwriting have been scanned, and a custom font created? That way, anyone in his staff could whip up a “handwritten” letter and send it out. Seems more personal that way. And how many folks, especially his hardcore followers, would have bothered to notice the consistency of the individual letters? I didn’t…the first thing I thought was that unlike most people, you can actually read his handwriting.

  32. WC Says:

You took the thoughts right out of my brain!

I just found out who stole my auto-writer.

  35. MANIMAL! Says:

    Re: the “font” discussion…..

Does it actually surprise anyone if DeLay sent out a “handwritten” message he hadn’t “handwritten” at all? Doesn’t it correspond precisely to his public statements anyway?

Seems perfectly in character to me. So to speak.

  36. Ron Says:

He should have a black box wired to his occipital lobe. Judas at least felt the shame and the guilt. Judas was more trustworthy; he had a fault just like everybody else. Tom is faultless, therefore guiltless. He cannot be blamed. He’s holier than thou. It doesn’t matter if he is criticized, found at fault, if you’re the messenger or the critic, you’re going to get killed.

Somebody making this stuff up or what?

  37. WC Says:

    #30

You raise a good point. But…I can hand write a letter to a family member or type it up on a word processor. Either method allows me to express my thoughts and feelings the same. But a word-processed letter to some folks, especially family, has a “cold” feeling about it…too business-like. I have an uncle who sends letters in this manner to his brother and sisters and this is the feeling that Mom gets. In his case, it actually matches his personality to a “T.”

A letter that is handwritten (or appears to be) lends a more personal tone to Tom’s constituents…maybe in a kind of “I’m one of you” way.

  38. cdj Says:

Delay’ll claim that the “we’re close friends” statement was just a figure of speech that politicians use all the time. You oughta get ahead of the game by doing a search thru Delay’s statements, and see for how many other people he’s said similar things - I suspect few or none.

  39. Chris Says:

OOPS - didn’t notice that this was from a letter to his constituents, in which case the “handwritten” font is understandable. Never mind =0)

  40. Greg Cryer Says:

#36. No - it is not suprising.

What would be suprising is if anyone that actually recieved this letter took two seconds to check the validity of it’s assertion.

My dad, a perfectionist rigth winger actually uses a ruler to make sure that every letter and line a re perfect. Even if he is writing a shopping list. If he makes one mistake, he throwes it away and starts over. SO, yes people do write that consistently.

  50. Clif Says:

Spudge I have a Masters Degree in visual arts and I’ve downloaded the entire letter, I want to read it, and will use a light table to compare overlays. But to a quick viewing it looks computer generated, probably by a troll hoping to get a start in Corruption Inc. Will let ya know.

is there something wrong with my reasoning?

  52. rcman Says:

    Don’t forget this Newsweek Piece
Oct. 10, 2005 issue - A decade ago, I paid a call on Tom DeLay in his ornate office in the Capitol. I had heard a rumor about him that I figured could not possibly be true. The rumor was that after the GOP took control of the House that year, DeLay had begun keeping a little black book with the names of Washington lobbyists who wanted to come see him. If the lobbyists were not Republicans and contributors to his power base, they didn’t get into “the people’s House.” DeLay not only confirmed the story, he showed me the book. His time was limited, DeLay explained with a genial smile. Why should he open his door to people who were not on the team?

    Doing The People’s business. Right.

  53. Spudge_Boy Says:

    Clif,

I am a nerd. The letters don’t all look the same to me. Also, as I stated before there are people like my dad who go to great links to make every letter in their notes look the same. Not to mention that computers, even if it is a custom font, don’t write crooked. You could program it, but why go to the much trouble for a letter. Sloppy forgeries have gotten past off as real before. Take the Italian forgery that was used to tak ethe US into war in Iraq.

  54. W Action Says:

Uh, Spudge_Boy, you assume Tom DeLay would even bother to write out a “personal note.” Now you want us to believe he cared SO MUCH, that he laid out a grid with his little ruler and slaved over each stroke. Why is this so important to you? It wasn’t to Tom! He just did the RoveCo thing and outsourced it. Maybe some enslaved drudge in the Marianas hand-wrote it.

  59. GMNotYet Says:

Will the GOP lies never end?

  60. Dan Says:

To me, the note is obviously written by hand. No computer font used.

Where do you want to start? Do a simple comparison between the two ‘Jack Abramoff’ s.

First ‘J’ in first paragraph has a slight curve at the top before it tries to reach the overscore. Also the hook to the left at the bottom of the ‘J’ is more square to the left than the second ‘J’ which curves a little more at the bottom.

First ‘a’ in first Jack is clearly more open and larger than the second a which is smaller.

First ‘c’ is larger and more open than second ‘c’ in second Jack.

The ‘k’ s are obvious. First ‘k’ the upper right leg of the k is closer to a one o’clock position while the second ‘k’ has the upper right leg pointing more toward a 2 or 3 o’clock position. Call it 2:30.

You’re getting the hang of this.

With the ‘A’s notice how the first A is slightly taller, the cross strike in the middle is more at an angle?

And so on,.. your homework assignment is to finish off the rest of the name.

  61. republican canard Says:

Now for an encore, the trolls can go on to prove the Declaration of Independence and Constitution were obviously not hand-written as well. They were planted by liberal agitators to circumvent the powers of the President (and Vice President)!

  62. Clif Says:

Dan I have the complete letter and it was computer generated, on Delays stationary for his “supporters”. He cry’s about how the press is mistreating him distorting his record and he needs their support, andof course MONEY, it’s a form letter with the reciepents name blank.

  63. repugrepellent Says:

    Dear Mr Dan (post #63),

Sorry mack, but you are wrong with you little scientific assessment of his Delay’s letter, the whole letter is computer fabricated font.. possibly Mr Delays own writing style having been scanned as a font, and now available to mass-produce cuddly lookalike Delay handwritting yet false and misleading… hmm false and misleading.. the Republican mantra. Thanks chuckles and have a good night lying yourself to sleep.

  64. shooter mcgavin Says:

I used photoshop and individual letters overlay, except in the first line which is stretched a little vertically. If you reverse “th” and “ht” they overlap, so does “ought” in sought and brought, and “I met with”. The spacing between all the words is consistent, as is how letters connect to each other. Plus in the second paragraph it looks like whoever wrote this double spaced after finishing those 2 sentences. Scan and post it again at a res 600+ and we’ll know for sure. (Maybe Delay is or has been replaced by a robot?)

  71. Jacques Says:

It’s definitely a computer generated font. Any person with an eye for accuracy can see the consistency in the letters, all “f”s look the same “T’s” etc all crossed at the exact same angles and the crosses the exact sizes. What a sham.
The man’s as fake as his letters.

  72. hank Says:

There’s no end to what these liars will do to stay in power.

Why does the computer-generated letter amaze you people?
Donald Rumsfeld uses a computer-generated signature on the letters sent to the families of our fallen troops. That is a much more dispecable act, in my opinion.

Tom DeLay has merely been true to his nature….deceitful, criminal, and evil.

  74. BroD Says:

Cut him some slack. It’s not because he disn’t know the fac5s–he just misstated them. It’s called …um…”lying.”

  75. Clif Says:

But I’ll bet some of his remaining highly intelligent supporters will believe good ole tom wrote them a letter personaly, just for them.

  76. Spudge_Boy Says:

Sorry folks, maybe this wasn’t hand written by Tom DeLay, but IT IS NOT a font.

Open up PhotoShop. Open up PDF provided by Lisa in Post number 43. Scrool down to page 5. Zoom in too the two instances of Jack Ambramoff. Take a screen shot. Switch over to PhotoShop. Crop both instances of Jack Abramoff as two images. Copy one image, overlay in on top of the first image. Set it’s opacity to 65%.

Now try and line up those two images. You won’t be able to do it. They are different.

All it takes is a little time and know how.
As soon as I get home and have access to my FTP, I will upload the image for all to see.

I work in a Marketing department and work with computers and images all day long.

This may not be written by Tom Delay himself, but it is not a font.

On 01/03/06, Tom Delay’s lawyer Dick Deguerin said that Jack and Tom were great buddies:(video)

Dick: There’s no question that they are friends and Tom Delay’s not the kind of person that’s going to turn his back on a friend that’s in trouble—Tom Delay is not going to abandon Jack Abramoff just because Abramoff has done some illegal things…

Not sure I got he meaning of the post. The sentence is kind of broken. :)

Is there another version of this letter out there that is more clear?

    Oh and W Action

Why is this so important to you?

Because I love a good mystery. Since this is the first time I have seen your name here, it would explain why you don’t know me very well.

  82. Thomas Says:

It is not handwritten. DeLay gave someone a sample of his handwriting and that was used to generate the letter, which was sent to thousands of Republican voters in his district. I know this as fact, please don’t ask how. It is also immaterial. The letter is extraordinary in tone and content, not style. I have never seen anything like it more than a dozen years in politics. DeLay’s internal polling numbers are horrible and this letter represents his attempt to shore up his support with Republicans in his own district, which is eroding fast. He’s in big trouble politically & legally.

How this letter came into being is irrelevant. The FACT remains the same. Tom DeLay is a LIAR, and the only “constituent” he cares about is Tom DeLay. Does no one remember the CBS/Dan Rather dustup? What needs remembering is that only the way the paper looked was challenged, not the CONTENT !!! But the blathering about “forged documents” drowned out WHAT the document revealed. I’m getting a sense of “Deja’Vu” here…. focus now, people! Don’t get fooled again !

  97. Jay Randal Says:

DeLay can LIE until he is blue in the face, but he and Jack Abramoff were buddies, so for Tom to say otherwise is plain rediculous! It is time for that former Cockroach Exterminator to get his lying ass out of DC and go back to his dirt poor Texan town forever!

  98. Pegasus1945 Says:

What a waste of skin they all are, right on up to the lying oval orifice. And remember Bush brought back truth and honesty to the oval orifice after he cleaned Bill out.

Bill was better on his worst day.

  99. Jo Says:

As you all know pooooor Tom is very busy and important. so isn’t it very probable that he had someone on his staff of loyal flunkeys either handwrite or have a very good job of computerizing a handwritten looking document for our benifit? And as for the argument that JackiePoo was a dear personal close friend…. Well I doubt that ANYONE ever believed that… after all who on earth imagines that ANY politician could have a friend. And besides if a good upstanding REPUBLICAN church going Top Congerssional type tells us something … anything…. it is our PATRIOTIC duty to believe it. And You must remember that it is validated by those wonderful truth tellers such as Rush and Sean and ETC…. So lets all be good little boys and girls and get behind that wonderful friend of all men Tom Delay … Amen

  100. bs Says:

saving private ryan, wasn’t that the name of the movie. this is another peckerwood that thinks he is going to go unscathed from this. let me tell you something delay, and jackoff/abramoff, whatever. go to crow/cheyenne land, if you forgot it’s where custer took his last stand, and pull some shit. while they are , smoking peyote, snuffin lysol at there annual pow wow, i heard they need a good canidate for the new inductees in the scalpin class. indians tend to hang together when the white man is fruckin them.

  101. Tom Says:

he probably used these guys to print out the letter.

Check out the customer list on the side. A few buddies on that list.

  102. Dave Says:

Your all crazy. Cant you tell this is all the democrats fault! They set it up, it’s a ploy. It can’t be the republicans, they do no wrong. And if they do, read the previous sentance again while the laws are changed to make it not wrong. Nothing you believe is true unless your told so by republicans. You are not allowed to speak against the republicans this way. It’s a new law passed by congress. Speaking out against republicans would make you a “disruptor” and you will go to jail and now your a terrorist along with your entire family. Let me tell you what YOU WILL do moving forward. YOU WILL LISTEN AND OBEY to what ever the repulicans say. They are right and everyone else is wrong. GOT IT??!! You have no rights anymore unless you have tons of money. And if you have then you owe it to the republicans. You might as well just shut your mouth completely. For the record, this so called “Free speach” and “freedom of rights” garbage should only be considered a concept thought of by a bunch of old guys a long time ago. This is 2006 and we are run by a dictator, I mean a great man. And by the way, even if you can prove it is not the democrats fault, it is anyway, and if not, then it’s the liberals, and if not them, then its your fault and your a terrorist. This is a very simple process people, now follow it or your a democratic terrorist and enemy combatant. Republicans know this because they listen to all your calls and read your emails.

  104. tom Says:

Abramoff didn’t come up with this idea by himself ladies and gentlemen - he ain’t that smart!

“Abramoff planned to purchase term life insurance on Tigua elders and colect the death benefits as they died. It was an imaginative idea by which the deaths of tribal elders would pay for lobbying services for those left behind. It was also more than the Tigua Tribal could stomach.”

Abramoff found another niche market to which the evangelical Reed could connect him: dying African American Christians. If Reed could, as he promised Abramoff in an e-mail, deliver 85,000 Christian voters, Abramoff must have assumed he cold deliver enough dying black Christians to create a new revenue stream. In July 2003, Abramoff emailed Reed regarding Black Churches Insurance program. Per our previous discussion. Let me know how we can move forward to chat with folks who can set this p with African American elders. IT CAN BE HUGE!!” Texas Observer August 26, 2005, page 19

Abramoff didn’t come up with the idea! SEE!

The idea has been working on the DEAD FOSTER CARE CHILDREN COVERED UP! See! http://www.ita.doc.gov/hrm/fegli.html
Put in Option C to make taking life insurance on State foster care children go from illegal to legal!!!

    Then changed/amended a few months later! http://www.opm.gov/asd/htm/1999/bal99-212.htm

Why was this foster care legislation put where no one would look and not put in the foster care legislation! Oh, I forgot it would draw RED FLAG and its all about PLAUSIBLE DENIABILITY! Remember that phrase PLAUSIBLE DENIABLILITY!

Here is the Congressional Hearing where FAKE DEATH FATALITY REPORTS were admitted into evidence! See! http://media.familyrights.us/expose/ExposeV2005.pdf

    http://www.familyrightsassociation.com/hotspots/index.html

    Here are FAKE REPORTS!

    http://www.acf.hhs.gov/ programs/ cb/ pubs/ cm02/ table4_1.htm

the one below will not come up if clicked on you have to manually type in this is the one turned into Congress for evidence sometime later this phenomenon occurred it had been previously posted and was able to be clicked on and read, you must now manually input!!
    http://www.acf.dhhs.gov/ programs/ cb/ publications/ cm00/ table5_3.htm

See New York “2″ Deaths, in 2000, and “0″ in 2002.

See Texas “1″ Death, and “0″ in 2002.

    Now read this http://www.nydailynews.com/ news/ local/ story/ 42203p-39826c.html “52 foster care deaths in 01′, Betsy claims”

See how it says “22 or 23″ for 2000, and “32″ for 2002.

Now go to Texas State Comptroller’s website, go to search, put in “Forgotten Children” go to page 220 Fatality Reports in State Care. See how it says “21″ instead of “1″ for 2000, and “44″ for 2002. by the way we have 1999, 2000, 2001, and 2002. The other years have no links to see, have hard copy!

Someone has some Splainin’ to do Lucy!! Why are they trickin’ the public for more Federal dollars!

How come it is legal to take out life insurance on children n State care when it was illegal before?

Isn’t the state the fiduciary, and not the group foster homes?

    Where is the insurable interest?

Isn’t this like a hospital or retirement residence taking life insurance out on its residents or patients.

Oh, I forgot the introduced a crooked DEAD PEASANT Life Insurance Scam on Retired State officials in Texas! See its legal here!

I was wondering why Tom DeLay showed up on June 6, 2004, in Washington, DC with the Head of Lutheran Social Services (the largest group home contractor in Texas) Senske the lawyer and thwarth a Congressional Investigation! That is where hundreds of cases were presented with evidence and FAKE DEATH REPORTS BY DHS!!!

Oh, guess who passed the legislation! Republican Sponsored and Republican backed don’t take my word. PL 105-311.

Look at Board Members for CASA Court Appointed Special advocates! And they get State funding to testify against parents in court! The Judge signs orders to hide children, the judges wife testifies against the children in court. The Judges wife has the State Contract for Therapy once children taken from parents! Oh, who had the contracts amended 12 times with NO SIGNATURES, NO DATES in Bexar County in San Antonio, TX! Just wondering because the initial contract was 10,000 and escalated to over $500,000 in 3 years! Isn’t that illegal it is in the Texas State Comptroller Report. How come Republican Governor Rick Perry showed up in Republican Judge John Specias court house and said on TV WOAI, “Don’t Point Fingers”.
Look at CASA Board Members! http://www.texascasa.org/ new/ About_US/ _board.asp?boardid=1 I noticed Judges, lawyers, TDPRS on the board Question: Doesn’t TDPRS approve the State Contracts last I knew and isn’t a Judge being on a Non Profit against the Judicial Cannon, especially one that testifies against people in court! See! http://www.scjc.state.tx.us/texcode_txt.php

If you want to order cassette with Tom DeLay speaking with San Antonio,TX Bexar County Judges Call Bill Stephens Productions, Inc. 1-800-322-4422.

Someone has some Splainin’ to do Lucy! Oh, doesn’t his wife sit on CASA. I was wondering who translated on the Russian trips………just wondering?

Someone has some Splainin’ to do! YOU BEEN DUPED! Look at cronies on the Non Profit sucking up State Funds! Then look at Adoption Agency sucking up State Funds, you know the one KEN LAY, ENRON gave to! The one where the Houston children were found overseas in NIGERIA where the adoptive woman worked for Haliburton, that adoption agency! Spauldi ng! Someone has some Splainin to do!
