“Iraq’s main Sunni Muslim bloc pulled out on Thursday of negotiations for the formation of a new government,” demanding an apology for recent attacks on Sunni mosques.
Remember, in October 2005, Iraq was like America in in 1776.
So I guess this means February 2006 in Iraq is like America in the 1860s, right? Wow, it’s almost like they’re advancing faster than we ever did! Maybe by summer they’ll have the Iraqi equivelent of the OJ Trial. And by fall, if they’re lucky, a major Iraqi city will be flooded and abandoned by the government.
Yah, it’s getting to the point where a civil war looks like a real possibility. Of course, the sectarian violence/roaming death squads that have been around for awhile never helped out. Or the militias – who aren’t so benign.
What are the odds the American trained Iraqi army performs worse than the South Vietnamese against the militamen?
In my opinion, this horrible, horrible situation might lead to a real political solution. And I don’t think a realistic political solution is anything near a ‘federal’ Iraq. Iraq is a UK construction, just like some other Arab countries, that was basically just picked out by looking at a map and drawing some lines.
The Kurds have their autonomy and are doing pretty well. THeir militia is really an army and does a good job.
The Sunnis need to make some sort of compromise that gives them some oil revenues and gets them security.
The Shiites can join Iran if that’s what they want. Seriously, damaging that Mosque was a STUPID ideal. Every one knows that the preznit of Iran is very very into the disappearing guy that myth/reality had him at that spot. Supreme leader and general Iranian population are too – one his shrines in Iran gets alot of visitors.
Anyway, toppling the Gold dome seems to have worked.
Judd,
More coverage on the violence in Iraq please. This is looking like a political issue on par with DPW – except it isn’t going to go away FOR THE REST OF BUSH’S TERM. Get the story alive before the rest – get the lowdown on why that mosque was so holy and why it’s going to piss the fundies in Iran so much. They basically worship what that guy represents. It’s a cult, sort of, that their President is deeply into. I don’t think desecrating that mosque is going to be met with Iranian restraint.
BTW, any thoughts on Iraq’s oil output in say a month? Those pipelines are really going to be a target to choke the federal govt of funds and to hurt the Shiites in the medium term (they have oil Sunnis don’t)
Get Podesta to do a write up? Invite some other guest from Brookings? Seriously, this is a major issue. A civil war will end in 1. Americans out. 2. Some really graphic imagery. 3. A tearing up of the present constitution and 3. Hopefully a stable, seperated Iraq. Autonomous regions or something.
Oh, the 4th option. More us troops on the ground to intervene in the civil war. Yah, that’d be a popular one. And alot of soldiers would die in the process since everyone would be aganst them.
Agreed. We’ll have more up on Iraq later today. Be sure check out The Progress Report this morning (should be live around 11, unless you already get it in your inbox each morning) — we have extensive coverage focusing on Iraq and what’s ahead.
The south has seceded. Let’s see the last three major conflicts the U.S. has been in. Korea, Vietnam and Iraq. There is a North and South Korea, there was a North and South Vietnam and now there will be a North, South and Middle Iraq. Are our international policies uniting or dividing?
money smedley, it was control of economies and money. Slavery was just a byproduct used to whip up some masses.
James – although both the Iranians & the southern Iraqi’s are Shite, they won’t join. They may fight together against an occupying force, but as soon as that force is gone, they will fight each other. Iranians are Persians, not Arabs. That distinction means more to them than you realize.
Maybe what they need is a Confederation rather than a Federation. That would allow for local regional dominance, rather than a centrally governed country.
None the less, the violent reprisals by the Shite’s are exactly what those that blew up the dome wanted. I can understand the Shite’s anger, I can’t understand that they don’t also see this and are still willing to play into that hand.

kindness,
It’s the “revenge factor”…
…not JUST for the mosque bombing…
…but the years of Sunni terror under Saddam when…
…like our situation here in America (conservative/neocon inbred Bushites) a minority (Sunnis in Iraq) held the power and were treated favorably by Saddam’s (Bushiva’s) regime…
…while Iraq’s majority Shiites (America’s Progressives) were marginalized politically, and brutalized physically…
…give Bushiva the repeal of the 22nd Constitutional amendment-repealing presidential term limits- his backers are trying to push forward, and the brutalizing could happen here…
The irony within this parallel lies in the fact that the Iraqi Sunni minority are non-sectarian…
…and the majority Shiites are right wing religious fanatics…
…while the American minority -conservative/neocon inbred Busite traitors- are radical right wing evangelical al Cracker fanatics…
…and America’s majority Progressives are largely non-sectarian…
…hopefully the point is clear, Shiites will hate Sunnis for past injustices while Saddam ruled…
…like American Progressives will battle (and hopefully neutralize) inbred conservative/neocon Bushite traitors for what they’ve allowed the treasonous criminals- Bushiva and L’il Dick- to do to this country, for years to come…
Well,I didn’t see that coming.
