“Governors of both parties

By Nico Pitney on Feb 26th, 2006 at 9:46 pm

“Governors of both parties

said Sunday that Bush administration policies were stripping the National Guard of equipment and personnel needed to respond to hurricanes, floods, tornadoes, forest fires and other emergencies.” Following a recent Pentagon budget proposal to cut 20,000 Guard members, “all 50 governors signed a letter to the president opposing any cuts in the size of the National Guard.”

  1. Clif says:

Gov. Mike Huckabee of Arkansas, a Republican and chairman of the governors association, said: “The National Guard plays an incredibly valuable role in the states. What we are concerned about, as governors, is that when our troops are deployed for long periods of time, and their equipment goes with them but does not come back, the troops are very strained, and they no longer have the equipment they were trained to use.”

Nearly one-third of the American ground forces in Iraq are members of the Army National Guard.

Gov. Dirk Kempthorne of Idaho, a Republican, said Sunday that he was still “very concerned.” The administration may have set aside the proposal on authorized strength, but it has not restored money to the budget to pay for 350,000 Guard members, he said.

Governor Kempthorne said the National Guard was bearing “a totally disproportionate share” of proposed cuts in the growth of the Army’s budget over the next five years, even as the Guard’s responsibilities at home were increasing.

David M. Walker, the comptroller general of the United States, who heads the Government Accountability Office, said the governors had some basis for their concerns.

“The Army cannot account for over half the equipment that Army National Guard units have left overseas,” Mr. Walker said. “And it has not developed replacement plans for the equipment, as Defense Department policy requires.”

Wingnuts we have a new target for your baseless atacks, the Governours of this country and the pentagon, feel free to spin this.

With all 50 governors signing this letter, let’s hope that the various media in each state does its job and reports the significance of the issue. Perhaps it’ll wake up a few Joe Sixpacks and initiate some discussion.

  5. Clif says:

Spread this story, this makes Bush look weaker than the port deal and a lot of middle Anericans can comprehend the National Guard, they are part of Bush’s base, repost everywhere.

We can’t have those mean old Guardsmen around when the Arabs start pouring the terrorists into our (sorry, the Arab) ports in the US. That’s the way it goes: First your ,omey then your ports.

  12. TJM says:

Clif, that’s from GAO report 06-170-T which was released on 10/20/05. It also mentions that the lack of equipment in the states reduced the ANG’s ability to respond to Katrina, It also reports that the GAO believes there can be no assurance to the Congress the ANG can fulfill its intended purpose.

A natural disaster. like Katrina, shows just how bankrupt the GWOT is. While we pretend that there is a WOT, Bush is privitising our national wealth, creating terrorism in Iraq, getting the global drug trade back up to full speed, and coordinating it with the UAE. It’s enough to make one believe that they let 9/11 happen on purpose.

A bit off thread…(then the pillow I think)

It’s great that the BushCo base is cracking so quickly…anything built on a poor foundation soon crumbles.

But another thought made me smile. The neocons might just create what they hate most. And that is “liberal” programs such as nationalized health care and hopefully a serious rebuilding of this country’s infrastructure. (Much of Americas plumbing, electrical, and other services are past antiquated to the point of being dangerous…NO is only a part of the story. Lot’s of jobs to be had.)
Look at the social programs that came in place after Viet Nam and why they may have become. I believe a part of it is because folks were pi$$ed and the programs were a form of appeasement.
When (and if) John Q wakes up and figures out he’s been duped there will probably be some backlash. “300b. (?) for Iraq and here I am with no health insurance, two crappy jobs, an inflated mortgage I can hardly afford, etc.”
“Hell, I just voted for Bush because Kerry was gonna take my gun and pull an unborn fetus outta my daughter cause he hates Jesus.” (A little extreme but…)

  23. Clif says:

Nixon resigned in disgrace in Aug of 1974, the break ins were during the 1972 campaigns, damn I feel old now I can remember them, I was in highschool, even debated his impeachment in the spring of 74 for an american history class, I was for impeachment

  24. Armando Gomez says:

Well it’s about time. All the governors in this sorry-assed county finally woke up and not only smell but felt the SHAFT that has been push up into them in the last five years.

  28. Chris says:

My only hope is that the media will take this story and run with it enough that the average person will get to see it. Bush says he supports our troops, and the average American believes this because they only see a few public speeches now and then, or catch a quick glimpse on the news. No one notices when he endorses the closing of 22 bases, cuts veterans benefits, or denies the same benefits to National Guard as the Active military recieves.

    Who funds a war? CONGRESS!
Who’s responsible for supplying the military? CONGRESS!
Once again you’re pointing your finger in the wrong direction. What’s really getting old is your constant dishonesty with the facts. AND you’re in the position to influence our childrens education. Pretty scary!

  33. Marie says:

They’re late to the party, but at least they have arrived. We have been telling them for years that the National Guard must be kept in the United States in order to protect us from all disasters, manmade and natural. I am surprised that all the governors signed this letter, but I am happy to know that — the message is clear from the population. The Coast Guard, the National Guard are just that — military organizations whose purpose is to defend and protect our nation.

  34. Marie says:

Antagonist, would you like to retract your comment at #37?

  37. Democrat Soldier says:

#41 – Antagonist is a pro-Pres. Bush mindless lemming, anything that Pres. Bush does is just 100% completely fine and hunky-dorey with Antagonist.

I’ll be Antagonist would cheer Pres. Bush letting al-Quida taking over our port control! If Pres. Bush says it’s OK, then who the heck is Antagonist to question the master of disaster?!?!?

  38. WiscoDuk says:

Antagonist is just being his/her namesake. Dishonesty with the facts is the cornerstone of BushCo.

Congress has forked over more than enough of our cash we haven’t given it yet. Once the money is appropriated it’s pretty much out of Congresses hands.

At 200b and counting that’s over 1.5 mil per soldier @ 130k troops. Should be more than enough for basic supplies.

  39. Howdy Neighbor says:

I’ve watched the local Natl. Guard Armory parking lot dwindle from 24 vehicles to 5 at last count, it’s hard to see now cause they are all parked in the back instead of the front…
Must be for security purposes, because there is only ever ONE personal (guardsman’s) vehicle in the lot anymore. They must be al gone somewhere.
And Fire season is just around the corner in a very dry region which is closely following the climate model projections all those scientists have been trying to warn Dumbya about.
The President is acountable for misdirection.
Congress is accountable to the People.

  40. Fatty bin Laden says:

So who, exactly, is ever going to hold Bush and his gang of criminals accountable for their actions?

  41. Antagonist says:

No, I don’t wish to retract my comment in #37, but I wish to retract my personal attack on unbelievable in #39–it was uncalled for.

  42. Howdy Neighbor says:

Congress, the state Governors and the core of the American citizenry are going to hold Bushco accountable, ’cause we are all going to holler long and loud and constantly from now till November and beyond. Right?!

  43. progressive and proud says:

  44. Democrat Soldier says:

    #48 – Antagonist, I’m shocked and amazed!

In the interests of continuing a reasoned debate, I retract my statements in #44. It was wrong of me to accuse you of being a mindless lemming, and it doesn’t encourage rational arguments to broadly label others based on limited debate and lack of understanding.

  45. Howdy Neighbor says:

Except perhaps we’ll keep the appellation “master of disaster”, there is no lack of understanding for that one…..

  46. WiscoDuk says:

    #49
Right on with the hollerin’ because we’re gonna have to. The evil genius Karl has already planted his abortion smokescreen device.

Most people could care less about politics as long as those cars keep going around the track, balls are bouncing around, and the beer is still flowing. Thinking people didn’t elect Bush…Bubba did.

I posted it before but it needs to be said again about John Q.

“Hell, I just voted for Bush because Kerry was gonna take my gun and pull an unborn fetus outta my daughter cause he hates Jesus.” (A little extreme but…)

  47. Antagonist says:

    #44
You’re wrong, I just hate dishonesty and liars. I simply detest the left’s automatic attacks on Bush. I’ve been supportive of him, but I don’t agree with everything he does either. Every news story is fashioned so you guys can continue the attack. You’re neither truthful or honest. You don’t handle facts and information accurately–everything is twisted so that you can get Bush. Sorry, but I don’t respect that.

  48. Marie says:

    #54
What? I think you have TP mixed up with Fox news.

  49. WaltTheMan says:

Hey, gang; don’t let Antagonist divert everyone from the crux of the matter. First, congress is restoring the funds that BushCo deleted from the guard budget. Second, the BushCo defense department is so inept that it has lost track of half the guard equipment that it has sent to Iraq and has no idea where it is or how much is involved. That is what the governors (a mere 50 of them) are complaining about.

  50. Howdy Neighbor says:

Bushco may well be trying to gut the National Guard, because by and large it is made up of thinking and working citizens with lives that include other aspects than just a military lifestyle.
A thinking and conscientious armed force is potentially hazardous to their Fear-Based Initiatives.

  51. Democrat Soldier says:

#54 – Obviously, you didn’t read my retraction in #51.

It sounds like you’ve got the same outlook on Pres. Bush that I had on Pres. Clinton & the “right”. They attacked him before he became President, and attacked him while he was President just because. Now, they still claim all of Pres. Bush’s failures are because of Pres. Clinton.

By the way, I’ve visited right-leaning web sites, and I have yet to find anyone who is holding Pres. Bush accountable for his actions. Care to explain how that could be? Or have you reverted to your partisan position and abandoned your conciliatory attitude?

  52. Democrat Soldier says:

#57 – Since Pres. Bush refuses to release his National guard records (like he made Sen. McCain do in 1999-2000) he has to destory the organization before his skipping out on his service comes to light.

  53. Antagonist says:

    #58
Which actions are you talking about? And what do you mean by holding him accountable? Calling for his head? Impeachment?

  54. Spudge_Boy says:

    Impeachment?

Impeachment is a start. After that, war crimes tribunal would be good. Then a good long prison sentence.

  55. Democrat Soldier says:

#60 – Pres. Bush has reduced the budget of the VA. Has any Republican held him accountable or said he “doesn’t support the troops?” No.

Pres. Bush could have encouraged Sec. Rumsfeld to push for personal armor for our troops in Iraq & Afghanistan, but he hasn’t and more and more soldiers are dying. Has any Republican held him accountable or said he “doesn’t support the troops?” No.

Pres. Bush could have put forth a standard for training the Iraqi troops and police that includes metrics for us eventually pulling out. NOT a time-table, but standards that say “When there are 5 batallions fully trained and running security, we allow 5 American batallions to return to the US.” Has he done this? Nope.

Pres. Bush continues to refuse to include the costs for the war in Iraq and Afghanistan in the annual budget, and gets by on asking for “special funding” that only gets included in the budget at the end of the year. This gives him headlines that he’s “reducing the budget” using sleight-of-hand tactics that the Republicans pilloried Pres. Clinton for trying ONE TIME. Has any republican held him accountable for this? Nope! Not one!

Don’t ask for proof when you’re going to stick your head in the sand and ignore it.

Ask yourself this one simple question, and don’t equivocate:
If the President was a Democrat during Sept. 11th, would you say he was responsible for it happening on our soil?

  56. Antagonist says:

    #62
No… I would not blame the president for 9/11 if he were a Democrat. I would be angry if he did nothing about it. Now the world has changed since then, and I would be angry if there were more attacks. I expect our government to protect us.

In # 58 you said…By the way, I’ve visited right-leaning web sites, and I have yet to find anyone who is holding Pres. Bush accountable for his actions.

Well here you go… Ann Coulter said this in a recent column.
…Bush is going to need a better justification for turning over management of our ports to an Arab country than he’s come up with so far…Bush’s defense of the port deal is to say that “those who are questioning it” need to “step up and explain why all of a sudden a Middle Eastern company is held to a different standard than a Great British company.”

First of all, it’s not “all of a sudden.” The phrase you’re searching for, Mr. President, is “ever since the murderous attacks of Sept. 11.” The Bush administration’s obstinate refusal to profile Middle Easterners has been the one massive gaping hole in national security since the 9/11 attacks — attacks that received indirect support from the United Arab Emirates…So maybe Bush could defend his port deal without insulting our intelligence by asking why anyone might imagine there’s any conceivable difference between a British company and a United Arab Emirates company… President Bush has painted himself into a corner on this issue, and he needs a face-saving compromise to get out of it. You can read the the whole thing if you want right here http://www.anncoulter.com/cgi-local/welcome.cgi

Your stereotypes of the right just aren’t working. I’m sure you could find even more right wing criticism of Bush if you really looked.

  57. Spudge_Boy says:

I’m sure you could find even more right wing criticism of Bush if you really looked.

You are correct. Lots of republicans and true conservatives are on the offensive against Bush and friends. The only people (Dems and Repubs) I know that aren’t against Bush right now troll this site. I am sure that I could find some at the right wing sites, but considering I would never want to troll myself, I don’t go there.

  58. Antagonist says:

I know this a foreign concept for you, but it is entirely possible to strongly disagree with the president in some areas, and still respect and support him.

  59. Spudge_Boy says:

I know this a foreign concept for you, but it is entirely possible to strongly disagree with the president in some areas, and still respect and support him.

    Nope.

I joined the military under George H. W. Bush. I joined to fight in Desert Storm.

I would never join the military under George W. Bush. There is absolutely nothing I respect about George Bush. NOTHING.

It is not foreign to me. I didn’t agree with everything Clinton did. I question ed the shit he did, like selling missile technology. But, I respected his foreign policy.

There is nothing, zero, ziltch, nada that George W. Bush has done to gain my respect. I do not respect somebody just because they have become president. That is not a good enough criteria for me giving my respect or trust. You gotta earn that.

The fact that you think it is a foreign concept to me, shows that you know nothing about me.

ALL 50 governors, Republican and Democrats signed this letter to George W. Bush. All of them and you still make excuses. Blind faith in somebody is a bad mode of operation.

  60. Antagonist says:

    #67 You said–
The fact that you think it is a foreign concept to me, shows that you know nothing about me.

Then grow up and stop acting like you don’t know any better.
Just because the letter was sent to Bush doesn’t mean he’s personally responsible for the National Guard equipment left in Iraq. I guarantee you that it’s sombody’s job in the army to keep track of all the equipment, and obviously it’s not being done very well. But go ahead and put Bush’s name on this one too…anything to keep the attack going.

  61. RightPunch says:

    Antagonist,

Who needs to racial profile? The UAE was shown to have ties to UBL and Al Qaeda in the 9/11 commission report.

Besides, if we were going to ‘profile’ people based on terrorism, then Timothy McVeigh would have required we put away all of you patriotic republicans now wouldn’t it?

Partisans like yourself say just the silliest, most hysterical and most irrational things when you ‘try’ to think through the partisan fog.

  62. RightPunch says:

“Then grow up and stop acting like you don’t know any better. Just because the letter was sent to Bush doesn’t mean he’s personally responsible for the National Guard equipment left in Iraq. Antagonist”

Anyone else notice how these partisans always sound like the sports nerds who listen to talk radio and believe they’re a part of the team? Sweetie, your ‘team’ screwed up, that’s what matters now doesn’t it?

But the problem is we’re america, and we’re supposed to be on the same team. But when you can’t take responsibility for the screw ups that seem to come out of the republican machine, then it just makes you look childish, irresponsible and uncaring of the greater well being of our country.

But I forgive you pumpkin. I’m sure you care about our country deeply, even if you can’t find a healthy and productive way of showing it.

  63. Democrat Soldier says:

#68 – Just like all the people who attacked Pres. Clinton blamed anything/everything on him, even if he had no role in the event.

So, if it was OK for it to happen to Pres. Clinton, then it should be just fine for it to happen to Pres. Bush, right?

As for respect for the office of President, I’ve never lost it. I don’t refer to Pres. Bush as “Bush”. Even though I think he’s a puppet for the special interest that he’s sold his soul to, and he’s trying to sell out America to, I will always refer to him as Pres. Bush.

Your stereotypes of the left are just as wrong-headed and mendacious as your statement about the stereotypes that the left has about the right.

It’s easy to claim “foul!” when people unfairly stereotype you, but do you listen to others when they claim you unfairly stereotype them?

  64. Antagonist says:

    #69
Did I ask anyone to agree with what Ann Coulter wrote?
No I did not. Democrat Soldier claimed that the right never holds Bush accountable. I merely posted the link to her column to prove that even right wingers do have some strong criticism for Bush. Go back to doing your nails you little liberal fruit topping.

  65. RightPunch says:

“Did I ask anyone to agree with what Ann Coulter wrote? No I did not. Democrat Soldier claimed that the right never holds Bush accountable. Antagonist”

Sweetie, is that what you believe is ‘holding to accountability’ for the right? It explains why your politicians have gotten so out of control sweetie. Not only was the Coulter comment not an ‘indictment’, it was barely a criticism.

If Coulter had written ‘The actions of George Bush are categorically wrong on this matter, and demonstrate poor judgement’, then I might believe you. Instead she says in the finest Desi fashion ‘you got some ’splainin to do Lucy’.

But considering your posts always consist of ‘partisan brain’ and a general inability to process facts, reason or rational thought – I’m not surprised you can’t recognize hard cold reality when it stares you in the face. But I forgive you pumpkin. If the research has taught is anything about ‘partisan brain’, it’s that your current crippled state prevents you from living in the real world pumpkin.

  66. Sharon Cox says:

Antagonest, respecting Bush, Cheney and this entire administration would be like respecting the green river killer of washington state. Get real..If you can’t give us anything but blind loyalty just go away..

  67. Spudge_Boy says:

Just because the letter was sent to Bush doesn’t mean he’s personally responsible for the National Guard equipment left in Iraq.

This isn’t only about equipment left in Iraq. This has to do with or National Guard, you know the guys that are supposed to be guarding our nation, being in Iraq for the extended amount of time they have been. THAT IS BUSH’S FAULT.

You grow up and stop acting like Bush is a saint. He is far from it.

  68. WaltTheMan says:

    Many rants – Antagonist,
If over a period of 5 years the president of the Buick division lost track of a total of half the division’s auto shipments, don’t you think that the CEO would have noticed something was wrong and try to have it corrected during the first year instead of waiting for year 5?
Well, W is the “CEO” of this nation and the Defense Department is a division of that government. It is W’s fumbling that has let this process get out of hand. The only equipment that this administration makes sacred is body armor removed by medics after a soldier is severely wounded – along with the Purple Heart, he gets a bill for the equipment.

  69. Clif says:

Antagonist as the Commander in Chief, the President of the United States is responsible for everything that happens in the Department of Defense, including the non accounting of the National Guard equipment in Iraq, the failure of the Department of Defense to adequately fund the National Guard(the states first line of defense in the idea of homeland security), He also has the right to request that the Secretary of Defense do a better job in handling the equipment of the National Guard and properly funding the National Guard at home …OR RESIGN … so the president could put someone in place who can do the job properly. As a former company commander I was responsible for EVERYTHING that happened under my command and when something went wrong, the Battalion Commander did not call any one to answer for the companies problems BUT me. And that is EXACTLY the way it should be, I accepted command and therefore the responsibility to put all my effort to accomplish the mission with accountability for the equipment and welfare for the troops under my command. SO FAR PRESIDENT BUSH HAS BEEN ABSENT HERE>…..thus his commanders, the american public have the responsibility as those whohired him and have the responsibility to hold him accountable are viocing their views.

This is NOT our product. He lost BOTH federal elections, by wide margins.

You like watching the troops and Guard getting cut up? That’s good, because the coup that is doing it was raised and cozened by the REPUGLICAN PARTY and its most corrupt wing, and they ain’t done yet.

Quit spreading the lie that we, a majority, voted for the destruction of our own country.

  74. Paul in LA says:

“I will always refer to him as Pres. Bush.”

This is NOT a president. This is a traitor.

*Please make a note of it.*
