ABC’s The Note on Dubai Ports Deal: “Zzzzzzzzzzz”

UPDATE: The Note’s response to our post, and our subsequent response, is here.

According to recent polling, the overwhelming majority of Americans are interested in the outcome of the Dubai ports deal:

Seventy-two percent (72%) of Americans say they have been following news about the Dubai Ports deal somewhat or very closely.

The same can’t be said for some major American media outlets. The authors of ABC’s The Note today shared their complete lack of interest in the story:

Port security:
Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

(If you expected The Note to report on the meaning of the flap, the delay, the brouhaha, the whole thing — you expected wrong. Wake us when it’s over.)

Obviously they have more important things to cover. Also from today’s edition: “Well-defined: Googling monkeys; Gang of 500; the sleep habits of Mike Allen.”

You can almost hear the notes boys scream:

Please don’t give me another example of why I was stupid to believe those guys! or

Please don’t require to me to report on a story that I have to work to understand! or

Please don’t make me think about the story which makes perfectly clear that I can’t read the political tea leaves, etc.

It seems even when the President of the United States of America takes out a British Policeman it’s not newsworthy. Cheney and Bush – they’re like Tom and Jerry without the humour.

  7. Howdy Neighbor says:

Remember when Disney tried to quash the release of Fahrenheit 9/11 not so very long a go? And CBS is still only counting 6 ports…..

  8. Grand Moff Texan says:

I guess someone besides ABC will have to do the actual WORK of reporting on DPW’s lousy record on smuggling and working with law enforcement, eh?

ABC, you suck. Now we know.

  9. Dumb Fox says:

To be fair to ABC, Bushco f*cking up is par for the course these days.

What’s disappointing is that no-one is covering the police report from Scotland about Chimp’s bike accident. Chimp in fact failed to crash into the poor cop. Instead he wiped, then took the cop out on his way down.

New Bushco motto: Mistakes are for sissies – real men do collateral damage.

You know, more and more it’s a testament to the intelligence of the American people that George Bush has a 55% disapproval rating and only 40% approval.

Seriously, it’s worse than Pravda. At least at Pravda, people knew they were tools. These guys are so easily manipulated that they believe highly salaried Republican pundits when they say that “regular people in the heartland” don’t care about this. Um, yeah, they do.

  13. windspike says:

As a person who lives near large vessel shipping lanes and a very large port of call, I am amazed at how lacking in protection they have over our waters – two or three larger coast guard cutters/ boats. Some smaller ones? That’s not going to cut the mustard in the security department. Also, you could park your nuke just near the port and pop it for some serious terrorsit result quite easily.

never fear – the Bush Adminsistration is here – to protect us. Yeah, right.

  14. Can you hear me now Adm. Poindexter says:

Their trying to bail him out now of his failed business as a President. They might be better able to avoid costly storm damage to ports and oil infrastructure in the future.

  18. Jay Randal says:

Yes the Media/Press are asleep on the UAE dirty deal to take over our East Coast port operations, because they have been paid to try to cover it up instead of reporting the real facts regarding the secretive deal! Demand the press wake-up!!!

  19. Mr Blifil says:

Ties in nicely with “Weekend with Maury and Connie” on MSNBC, which morphed into a pro Dubai Ports infomercial with Maury and Connie speaking with serious tones to the camera to “reassure” us that Dubai Ports is one perfessional operation, yesirree Bob. All that sittin’ down with terr’ists was “a long time ago.” Made me feel all warm and fuzzy, but I was frustrated there was no 800 number to call after the show was over.

Had to be seen to be believed. Very Crooks and Liars worthy material.

  20. bobcat_grad says:

My question, theorajones, is how much uber-rich Republicans with their mansions, estates, maids, and their huger portfolios really know what “regular people in the heartland” are.

    Conceited elitists.

  21. bobcat_grad says:

    #18: Jay Randal

They haven’t been paid off. They’re just lazy.

Uncovering the truth and doing some fact finding is much harder than reading a press release and then conjecturing over the talking points they were fed. Mmmmmm… talking points.

  22. Phoenix Woman says:

    Schumer makes a good point:

FRIEDMAN: Gentlemen, how much of this is about an Arab-owned port operator? That is, we know there are many foreign countries, companies that operate ports — Singapore, for instance — in the United States. How much of this is about Arabs and Muslims operating one of our ports?

SCHUMER: Well, yeah, I would say this. To me, it’s the nexus with terrorism that a country has. If this were a non-Arab country with a nexus of terrorism — Chechnya, East Timor — I’d have the same concerns. And it does bring up — Tom, you do bring up a greater concern. We sort of backed into the idea that port security can be run by other countries, and that’s something that should be studied. We’ve never really studied it. After all, we do have a law prohibiting airports, another security pressure point, that can’t be owned by foreign countries. So I think that whatever happens in this United Arab Emirates deal, if we get more focus on port security, which some of us have been trying to do in the Congress for years, some good will come out of this.

If foreign countries can’t own our airports, it stands to reason that they shouldn’t be running our seaports.

    It’s called common sense.

  23. Jay Randal says:

Post 21 I wish they were just lazy, but this is an important issue that Americans want to know about, so the TV press in particular are asleep for a reason > Bush agents telling them to shut-up and remain in a coma too!

  24. TimW says:

    Worst Media Ever. Period.

  25. bobcat_grad says:

    23: Randal

I agree with you, to a point. I think there has been pressure put on various news outlets for sure. But as the public (people and congressmen) support for Bush is waning, I think we’ll begin to see more and more critical pieces coming out.

For the longest time (with Rove’s help), if you were critical of Bush, his administration, or their policies you were labeled weak and unpatriotic. Now that more and more people aren’t taking that ridiculous mindest lying down, Americans are realizing that they need to begin paying attention again.

They were lulled to sleep with the “we’ll keep y’all safe, Amurcans!” rhetoric from Bush. Now that more of the public dissapproves of Bush than approves, we’ll slowly see more critical reporting of his poor decisions.

    Or at least I hope.

  26. noshrub says:

The Note spends way too much time on cutesy Inside the Beltway Shit (ITBS). All their googling monkey stuff makes me want to hurl. They actually used to cover stuff a few years ago in a relatively non-partisan way. Now, Rove spoon feeds them monkey shit from on top of a turd blossom and that’s supposed to be news.

  27. Austin Talk says:

I heard on AirAmerica that there are actually 21 ports that will be taken over by UAE and not the 6 that has been reported. Someone in the media or at Think Progress needs to find out if this is true.

  28. Yamara says:

Cheney and Bush – they’re like Tom and Jerry without the humour.

Say rather they’re Pinky and the Brain without the irony.

  29. Jay Randal says:

Post 25 I agree with you for the most part and we can hope the press awakens fully on this issue! The dirty deal with Dubai Ports World must be completely uncovered, so the Congress is FORCED to terminate the agreement! I do NOT care if Bush is so humiliated by this charade that he resigns in shame!

Boy will they have egg on their face if there’s a terrorist event in the US and the ports somehow were involved. Unless this whole “terrorist” thing is an overhyped military-industrial fear-based powergrab with only small, very small prospects of actually affecting our lives in a tangible way……Ummm……

  35. Rick Vance says:

Are we seriously surprised that the so-called “liberal media” is asleep at the wheel again? When are we going to realize that with rare exceptions (ie: Keith Olbermann and a handful of others)that our “journalists” of the media are nothing more than paid mouthpieces of the White House Ministry of Disinformation! From the cheerleading they engaged in that led to the invasion and the subsequently deadly occupation of Iraq to this story of our governments idiotic decision to “outsource” port security is par for the corporate course. Look for the Carlyle Group’s fingerprints on this deal. The Bush family has an incestuous history with the oppressive Arab regimes throughout the Middle East and had it not been for Saudi benefactors who bailed out Junior time after time he would never have been elected Governor of Texas, let alone President, twice! (For those who still subscribe to the fantasy the he was, indeed, elected). Remember that in the 80’s, Saddam and the Reagan/Bush41 junta were thick as thieves and Saddam was seen as a bulwark against Islamic extremism. Hell, our current Sec. of Defense was a warmly welcomed (and frequent) guest of Saddam’s. Even as he was brutally murdering and oppressing the Kurds and Shia, as long as he was useful, our government (and the U.S. media), could overlook his brutality. I honestly believe that even after he invaded Kuwait, that Bush Sr. would have done nothing to Saddam had he not been goaded into it by Margaret Thatcher! It’s a sad commentary on the state of mainstream media when instead of being a watchdog for the American people, they instead have become the lapdogs of what, in my opinion, is a thinly veiled white supremisist group posing as politicians. For those who disagree, name me one war since WWII that we weren’t killing and maiming people who were decidely darker in pigmentation that those who brought us those wars! And, God forbid, they weren’t Christians either, imagine that! George Carlin was right when he said that if you live in country full of “brown people” and we haven’t bombed the shit out of you yet, you can bet your on the list. We just haven’t gotten around to it yet. And if you have a natural resource that will enrich the backers of these elected racists, you’re probably at or near the top. Just ask Fraulein Coulter.

  39. Jimmy says:

I’m one of those press members, though I work for a trade publication covering port security and not in the MSM. I’d like to think I’m trying to bring light to all the relevant issues behind all this (and trying to sort fact from fiction), and trying to bring more MSM awareness to fully cover this story. Then again, I’d also like to see more attention in general to port security, rather than the issue get blown off once the immediate furor over Dubai dies down. I’m going to be heading to some of these ports soon to get more insight into this, I’m tracking the lawsuits that have already been filed, and I’ll be closely monitoring all the latest developments, but once this fades from the main headlines, it’s not as if we’re going to see a sudden outpouring in security enhancements or funding for those things at US ports. We’re still falling far short on port security, and it’s not just here in the US where we have to be worried, it’s anywhere goods get shipped to the US.

  41. Bigislandguy says:

Once upon a time I regarded NBC as the *purest* advocates of military-industrial complex agenda but just recently I’ve noticed ABC trying hard to knock them out of that slot. When the news on this story broke, the emoticons/news readers at ABC were very clearly trying to stand with Bush (as he jumped all over the map on it, trying to find some way to defend it) and moved with him, nonplussed, wherever he moved, they were right there with him, chiding any viewers who might be thinking that President for Life Bush would take anything but the correct position (on this or any other issue). I usually flip through the CBS-NBC-ABC triumvirate during “the news” simply to see what these clowns are pushing at any given time but I think I’ll spare myself and knock ABC out of my surfing from now on.

  42. WFB says:

Here’s another point the MSM is sleeping through:

It’s been widely noted that two of the 9/11 hijackers were from the UAE. One of the two was Marwan al-Shehhi, the pilot-hijacker of United Flight 175. It was Al-Shehhi who piloted that aircraft into the South Tower of the World Trade Center, killing over 650 people.

Al-Shehhi first joined Al Qaeda while he was a student in Hamburg. He went to school there on a military scholarship, which he received after joining the UAE Army in 1995. In fact, he continued to receive stipend payments from the UAE Army through December 23, 2000, using part of that money to pay for the flight lessons he took in preparation for the attacks. So the same government that will be running our major eastern ports helped finance the 9/11 attacks. I haven’t seen anything to suggest this wasn’t inadvertent on their part, but if they had no idea that one of Al Qaeda’s deadliest killers was on their military payroll, how can we trust their assurances about Dubai Ports World?

FYI, this is covered in the staff reports of the 9/11 Commission. The reports are silent on whether Al-Shehhi was ever actually discharged from the UAE Army prior to September 11, 2001.

    #38 (mighty aphrodite)

I’m not a member of any group or organization. And how in the hell did you so totally miss my point! Me, a racist, now that’s something that totally boggles the mind. My point was that “our” government hasn’t waged war against another lily-white and allegedly Christian nation since WWII! My whole rant was as anti-racist as I could have possibly made it. I was trying to point out the hypocrisy of Dear Leaders lame ass excuse that he’s “spreading freedom and democracy” to the poor unwashed masses in the Middle East. And yes, I guess I could be counted as one of the “Habitually Offended” if you mean to say that I am in complete opposition to a racist agenda (masquerading as “foreign policy”) that says if you are of a different race, speak a different language and worship a different God then you’re the “enemy”. How then, does that make me a racist? The George Carlin bit that I paraphrased was a little thing I like to call irony. Oh by the way in case you’re wondering, I myself, am white. So my calling our “leaders” racists, who engage in the oppression and extermination of people of other nations simply because they don’t look like them, think like them or worship like them makes me a racist? Go figure!

  55. Monkey Nut Wrench says:

Critics say the outcry over the £3.9bn acquisition of P&O by Dubai Ports World, which will transfer the running of five US ports to a state-controlled Middle Eastern company, has exposed the US Congress at its xenophobic worst. But it has also revealed more starkly than ever the protectionist tide that is waxing in America under the guise of national security.

In the UK, in the cash-rich Gulf states and in fast-growing India, different incidents in the past week have made people ask the same question: is it worth doing business with the US?

This latest fiasco Dubai Port deal – only strengthens my belief that the bush administration knows that we have nothing to fear about terrorism – terrorism was USED to put the fear into the American public that is the only way he and his cohorts could get away with all their crimes. For having NO brains or heart, he is the smart one and we are the fools (the small percentage of those who actually still believe are idiots & fools) – because no matter how much we are aware of what they are doing – we do not have the power or the answers to rectify the situation. We are controlled by The Corporations of America (formally The United States of America) and soon they will control the World.

  65. Rick Vance says:

So my calling white folks racist (when I’m white) is itself racist (whether anyone cares what color my skin is or not) what an oxymoron. As for being sophomoric, I’m well past the age where I have some kind of utopian vision of the world we live in. Don’t compare me to some loser your sister dated and I won’t compare you to some of the examples that pass for female on the right. I served for four years in the Marines and feel I have every right to oppose those who would send my fellow Marines to kill and die to bring the PNAC/neo-con fantasy to life. I have as good a sense of humor as the next person, but if you can find humor in over 2300 dead American soldiers and countless dead innocent Iraqi civilians all for the deluded dreams of a bunch of rich, heartless S.O.B.’s who told whatever lie they could to scare the shit out average Americans to convince us that we were about to die under a radioactive “mushroom” cloud, or an agonizing death from a (non-existent) biological or chemical agent, then your the kind of person who could find humor in a catastrophic natural disaster like Katrina, right? And for whoever made the comparisons to Korea or Vietnam let me ask this; Did we come to the aid of the South Koreans because they were being threatened by Sweden? Or were we “helping” them kill people who looked just like them. Was South Vietnam being attacked by Iceland and we had to help them fight off the Nordic menace? In each case we were “helping” Asians kill Asians. So my point stands, when have we gone to war against another race of people (since the end of WWII) who looked just like us and at least paid lip-service to believing in the same God as these born-again warriors for Christ?

This from a Chertoff Bank Meeting about datamining in 2002http://banking.senate.gov/02_01hrg/012902/chertoff.htm
In addition to the coordinated shut-down of al Barakaat’s operation on November 7th, the United States Attorney for the District of Massachusetts is prosecuting the principals of al Barakaat’s Boston branch for operating an unlicenced money transmitting business. Between January and September 2001, while operating without a license under Massachusetts law, Barakaat North America knowingly caused the transfer of over $3,000,000 to banks in the United Arab Emirates. On November 14, 2001, a federal grand jury in Boston returned an indictment charging Liban Hussein, the president of al Barakaat, and his brother, Mohamed Hussein, with a violation of 18 U.S.C. § 1960 (prohibition of illegal money transmitting businesses). Mohamed Hussein has been detained pending trial, and we are seeking to extradite Liban Hussein through a request made to Canada.

Again, Mr. Bush and his “business associates,” i.e. – cabinet members are putting their own financial investments above that of the security of the American population — that is TREASON! The list of who’s who, and who’s going to make (more) billions off of this deal is outrageous and all connected to the Bush family and their biz partners. This Administration is in office (ONLY)to make more money for themselves off the backs of the American taxpayers… and with the blood of those same taxpayers at risk, seemingly of no concern to them for their greedy actions.
a list of the beneficiaries to this PORT DEAL include the Bin Laden family – go to the link below for a more complete list:

    “The Note”?

More like “Love Note (to W)”

Corporate “liberal” media to Bush: “Ah can’t quit yew!”

  71. Redleg says:

Those f-ing hacks don’t want to be bothered by studying a complex issue like who should be running U.S. ports. It’s exactly that kind of disinterest and boredom by the media that helped put the idiot Dubya in office.

  72. Redleg says:

    MightyAprhodite,
Is there any position or policy of Der Fuhrer Bush that you don’t slavishly defend?

  73. Sam C says:

Americian ports being run by British are better than ports being run by UAE! ?? It’s just racist to continue that line of reason… Business is business whether the person in charge has an English accent or an Arab one. As for THE NOTE, they clearly stated that Bob Novak had said it all and then they linked to the page.
He wrote very well on the topic…to sum his statements; this political attack on the white house was designed to help the Dems bring homeland security (or symbolic security) back into their realm.
If you can’t read between the jokes to understand the point on the first read, you might want to think about printing “the note” out so you can re-read it several times.(It also helps to underline)

  74. CDB says:

    From todays note, linking here

    — The end of The Note’s latest experiment in which we see how easy it is to get liberal bloggers and e-mailers mad at us, and the beginning of the experiment in which we see how mad they get when we joke about their getting mad. LINK (We particularly recommend post #26.)

  75. Roll Them Bones says:

right Katherine … or can I call you #71? … I can almost hear in my mind Bush Senior calling Georgie Junior on the “yellow” phone to tell him the 8 billion has been tranferred so it’s clear to award the port operation to UAE. This isnt a government administration it’s a criminal cat’s paw for Carlyle Group. I can hear Bush’s mommy when asked about this country’s voters, she responds “They look like a sorry bunch to me”

  76. Think Progress » The Note: It Was All A Ploy To Upset Bloggers says:

[...] Yesterday, we mentioned The Note’s lack of interest in the Dubai ports issue. They responded in this morning’s edition: Today is: [...]

  77. Stacy B. says:

ABC is pathetic. Let them become irrelevant while they sit back with their thumbs up their ass wondering what Brad and Angelina’s baby will look like.

I mean, do any serious news/politics wonks actually get up in the morning and go “gee, I wonder what ABC’s ‘The Note’ is saying about world events”?

    Not likely.

  78. Schwede says:

ABC’s “experiment” sounds like an old-fashioned screwup, then coverup. I’d say the “f” word just to give them the vapors (since they have so much time on their hands ignoring real news and supposedly teasing bloggers), but I’m just not in the spanking mood today.

  79. Pablo says:

The Note sucks ass, and I think they know it.

  80. Anita Senkowski says:
