POLL: The Second Term Free Fall

POLL: The Second Term Free Fall»

The latest CBS News poll puts President Bush’s job approval at 34 percent — an all-time low. Vice President Cheney is doing even worse. Only 18 percent of the public approves of the way he is doing his job.

The American public has a dismal assessment of Bush’s policies across the board:

30 percent approve of Bush’s handling of the war in Iraq — an all-time low.

27 percent approve of Bush’s energy policy.

32 percent approve of Bush’s handling of the economy.

5 percent of Americans are pleased with the way the rebuilding of the Gulf Coast is going.

Today, White House Press Secretary Scott McClellan said, “Our focus is on the important priorities of the American people.” Looks like the American people disagree.

Watching Scott McClellan try to spin the bad news in the polls is, well, priceless.

  2. Running Man Says:

What’s really scary is that 30% of Americans approve of Bush’s handling in Iraq. What planet do these people live on?

  3. Marie Says:

That’s great but how does that affect their remaining in power for another three years?
The Republicans who have staunchly defended them for 5 years will have to eat their words and I don’t see them doing that. They will instead continue to excuse them, blame the media, and spin the facts to suit themselves.

  5. Jay Randal Says:

Would be great news if Bush cared about polls, but he believes that nothing can be done to him by anybody!

  6. ajr Says:

    they will spinn -
    yes -
but this time we have ammo to tell them to sit the fuck down and shut the fuck up

  7. Clif Says:

Marie at the foodland store some people were discussing bush and I brought up the national guard letter if the governors and the fact thta Jeb Bush had also signed it and I found 1 person who still supported GWB, his look was priceless. While everyone else laughed about george getting punked by jeb…….

  8. Spudge_Boy Says:

Okay, so does anybody know what the presidents approval rating was while Veitnam was going down the toilet. It would be interesting to compare.

  9. Jay Randal Says:

What about the poll numbers on the UAE ports deal? Supposedly about 70% to 80% oppose it and only about 17% idiots agree with it! The Congress should already be impeaching Bush and Cheney, but instead they cower!

  10. Spudge_Boy Says:

Wait, not the presidents approval rating. I meant the percentage of people that think that Veitnam handled okay.

  11. Marie Says:

    #7, Clif,
Do you think if we have a few more months of free fall for Bush&Co that it will actually be reflected in the polls in November? We must regain some control in congress in order to stop the insanity.
There are still a helluva lot of Bush lovers in my neck of the woods.

  12. Silly Little American Boy Says:

But wait, he hadn’t gotten a blowjob from Monica Lewinsky in the oval office yet…how could everybody already hate him so much?

  13. worfeus Says:

I wish someone would give him a bj in the oval office.

Maybe he’d lighten up on the number of new enemies he creates in a week.

  14. Fred Says:

Hey I also hear this poll has a majority saying the President has no authority to wiretap without a warrant. Is that true? Don’t you think that merits attention? You know, popularity in the crapper + illegal activity + contempt for the public = impeachment. Just wondering…

  15. JIMBO Says:

The Bubble President has a mental problem. No matter what the polls say and no matter how the Republicans are avoiding him, he still thinks he’s perfect. He’s a psychopathic alcoholic nymphomaniac dork.

Just don’t let him near the liquor cabinet.

  16. WiscoDuk Says:

Maybe he’d lighten up on the number of new enemies he creates in a week.

I don’t know…the enemies he’s been making lately is his own fragile base.

  17. Clif Says:

#12 Marie, the people who live around me farmers and rural church people do not want to defend GWB today, and they cringe when you ask them if port security or gay marriage is more important

  18. Granite State Destroyer Says:

I am listening closely to hear the “SPLAT” in Washington when he finally hits the floor. There will be a larger “SPLAT” and an oil slick when Shotgun Dick Cheney hits first.

Let ‘em drop. The nation is snapping out of the zombie-like state it was lulled into after 9/11.

Who is creating the reality now?

Breaking News Tonight: UAE government and Dubai Ports World have threatened CNN to fire Lou Dobbs for his hard hitting reporting on the dirty deal to sell our East Coast port facilities/management to them! CNN has refused to fire Dobbs, so UAE/DPW corp. have banned CNN from reporting news from United Arab Emirates and from all the ports controlled by them throughout the world! Demand that the Congress impeach Bush and Cheney for this criminal agreement to turn over our ports to UAE thugs!

  20. PeeJ Says:

I’m really worried. I think we really need to quit being so divisive and support this President. You know, if we don’t, we’ll have to suffer through ANOTHER new Pearl Harbor, and I don’t really want to go through that. I don’t even want to waste my time watching the news on the fake anthrax mailings. C’mon…let’s just impeach and move on. Nothing to see here… Just IMPEACH… No DNA, but plenty of CYA. Give it up Bushie! God Bless America, please wake us up?

    Peace, back by popular demand!

  21. Jack Hicks Says:

It will be fun watching the Republicans from here until November. They’ll be praying for an uptick but they will start peeling off. And the Dems; some of them are so scared they should jump in someone’s pocket.

This from a Chertoff Bank Meeting about datamining in 2002
    http://banking.senate.gov/02_01hrg/012902/chertoff.htm
In addition to the coordinated shut-down of al Barakaat’s operation on November 7th, the United States Attorney for the District of Massachusetts is prosecuting the principals of al Barakaat’s Boston branch for operating an unlicenced money transmitting business. Between January and September 2001, while operating without a license under Massachusetts law, Barakaat North America knowingly caused the transfer of over $3,000,000 to banks in the United Arab Emirates.

On Wednesday, the Supreme Court will hear a case that brings together three simmering Republican scandals. The GOP’s unprecedented Congressional gerrymandering, Tom Delay’s ethical failings and the Department of Justice’s gutting of the Voting Rights Act of 1965 will be among the story lines as the Roberts Court takes on the 2003 Texas redistricting cases.

  26. Gary Ruppert Says:

The poll has a sample of 40% Democrats, 27% Republicans, 33% Independents.

The Democratic Party: When we can’t win using realistic samples, we just slant them to create fake news

  27. Clif Says:

Gary even if what you say is true, which almost everyone is in doubt of then you are saying that about two thirds of republicans support the dickster and no one else, and all repubs and 7% of all independants if no dems support bush, not good even by your anaylsis,

sorry but the ship of bush is stuck in the swamp he navigated it into, and the dickster has gone hunting quail or old republican lawyers, or he is hiding in the secret undisclosed location sniviling about his sorry ratings after bush punked him about it and asking rove to go hunting for roves brilliance in the last six months…..

  28. The Betamax Guillotine Says:

    Feel the Joementum…

Bush’s approval at 34% according to a CBS News poll out tonight; Cheney’s approval at 18%. Bush’s approval is falling across the public opinion board, from CBS to ABC to Rasmussen to Charlie Cook. 1300 Iraqis dead in sectarian…

  29. Silly Little American Boy Says:

#20 - Lou Dobbs is totally sticking it to the administration over the UAE Dubai port deal. Nobody else is hitting as hard as Dobbs is right now, not on any of the issues, but Dobbs is in the zone, and he’s on fire.
I wouldn’t be surprised if we discover later that this was originally an order given by the Bush administration and handed over to the UAE to vocalize. I really wouldn’t put it passed them at this point.
If the deal doesn’t go through, *PRAYING* Dobbs will have to be recognized as one of the key figures who helped to expose it and performed an exceptional service by bringing it to the American people’s attention for what it really is. So many other news organizations are failing miserably at this, it’s just sad.
Major praise to Lou Dobbs, keep up the good fight sir!

Hey Dick Cheese, weren’t you crowing about Iraqi polls the other day? Don’t recall the sampling caveat then.

Go stick your nuts in a garlic press.

    -GSD

Watch Bush fall off his bike again and then walk into a locked door and then watch Deadeye Dick Cheney shotgun an old man in the face.

  32. Spudge_Boy Says:

Gary Ruppert: So stupid, nobody gives a flyin’ fvck what he says.

  33. LiberalMinded Says:

The number on the economy is really telltale. I mean to listen to every “Business” show all across the United States, you’d think we were in a boom.

I sometimes think, if the Depression happened today, would it even be reported?

  34. Gary Ruppert Says:

    Source

    Total Republicans 272 (27%)
    Total Democrats 409 (40%)
    Total Independents 337 (33%)

Nobody with a working brain thinks that the percentage of Republicans has fallen ten points in 15 months.

The fact is that the left is putting up a phony poll.

  35. Abby Says:

#28, Gary, since when did any pollster manage to find 33% independents? I’ll tell you where. Conservatives, (sensible and sane Americans who don’t share Liberal values), ashamed and angry about Bush, call themselves independents. That’s how you get an abnormally high 33% independents.

Some people recognize faults and failures wherever they see them irrespective of their political preferences. When America is being screwed by any political party tool, all Americans, Democrats and Republicans alike are unhappy and angry. Not everybody is as blind and stupid as you. Not every Republican puts Party interests before the interests of his own country.

  36. Clif Says:

OK… Gary… so out of 1018 randomly selected people 346 support bush but only 182 support Cheney, that still means not even all the republicans supprot Cheney and only 23 out of 337 independants support bush, cut it out do you have to keep rubbing it in don’t you think that Cheney feels bad enough, or does another old repug lawyer have to take one in the face for the team again?

  37. RightPunch Says:

    Gary,

Sweetie, in Nov-2004 only 31.8% of americans were registered republicans, compared to almost 35% who were registered democrats, and the rest independents. If you had gone to the bottom of the study you linked, you’d have found that they ‘weighted’ the study to bump the percentage of republican ‘votes’ to ~29 from ~27, which is well within the margin of error of registered republicans. If they had gone further, and bumped up the numbers to 31.8% to match the nation registration numbers from 2003, then the extrapolated 66% of republicans who still approve (similar to how the numbers appear in other parts of the poll) it would at most produce a 36% approval rating - which is within the margin of error.

So while you’d like to believe some vast conspiracy as at work - that’s just your partisan brain working to discount unpleasant information. Based on my look at the numbers, doing simple math and understanding basic statistics show that the poll are reasonable and most probably accurate. Plus with the general discontent among many moderate republicans - I actually know several personally - many have shifted to calling themselves independent. If we consider that many republican moderates probably now call themselves independents, then this poll is even more interesting and unpleasant for republicans.

But sweetie, paranoia comes with partisanship, so I forgive you for not being able to process the unpleasant information. It must be difficult for you pumpkin to see your team failing in the court of public opinion. I personally care less about which party wins, than what they do in office. So far this presidency has been terribly disappointing, as it has been for most independent thinkers. Republicans seem to have forgotten what decent values they claim to represent, and instead they’ve just sold out to personal greed, petty vendettas and hate speech that divides the nation. It’s very sad to see, and I pity people like you who buy off on it without question. It doesn’t reflect well on you or your sensibilities pumpkin.

We just don’t know what’s best for us. We really need to listen to what Uncle Bush has to say.

  40. Jericho Says:

Nice to see them get the credit they deserve. How low would the ratings be if we polled the world?? Remind you, the US ‘president’ thinks he can eavesdrop on whatever I place on the net. Maybe then, because the US is thé world superpower and police of the world, I should have the legal right and opportunity to vote for an OTHER US president? Or to impeach THE WORST YET!? Democracy, scamocracy! YOUR DAMNED COUNTRY IS MADE OF IMMIGRANTS AND IMMIGRANTS ALONE, FROM EVERY NATION THE WORLD HAS KNOWN EVER SINCE THEY FOUNDED THE US. HOW IS IT POSSIBLE TO BE PATRIOTIC ABOUT THAT!! GIVE THE WORLD THE VOTE THEY DESERVE AND BUSH WILL END UP IN PRISON.

  41. Judd Says:

Gary fails to mention that pollsters adjusted the results to account for any oversampling of Democrats. Republicans were adjusted up and Democrats were adjusted down. It’s all right there in the poll.

  42. Marq Says:

Scott McClellan said, “Our focus is on the important priorities of the American people.”

So according to Bush, Americans want uber high gas prices, record high healthcare prices, loss of real wages, rise in abortion, tax-cuts to the rich and so on. Scott this is what you think Americans want? I am an American, and I can tell you that you are way off…

See you in hell Scott and the rest of the Republicans. By the way, Republicans, why do you hate Americans?

  43. wisedup Says:

from the nixon area…..republicans got real quiet (like they are now) never admiting what a slimy snake nixon was. I hear the poll of 25% rating, but polls then were not very accurate then and news was radio and t.v. and newspapers and republican owned, so it just got quiet. A ‘let’s move on’ was all you got. Republicans only said they wished thoes hearings would get over with. A ‘just one bad apple’ crap was the posture. Nixon would get on t.v. and you could see he was under the gun, eyes fixed, sweating and trying to save his ass. Years later he mumbled he ’screwed up’ was all we ever got out of him.

  44. Debbie Hamilton Says:

My friend’s daughter is being deployed to Iraq. This is just terrible and senseless, but it is being replayed all over our country. I am sick about this, because I have no power alone to do anything about it. Together we can make a difference. Now that Bush’s approval rating on the handling of Iraq is only at 30%, we need to push Murtha’s plan:

To immediately redeploy U.S. troops consistent with the safety of U.S. forces.
To create a quick reaction force in the region.
To create an over- the- horizon presence of Marines.
To diplomatically pursue security and stability in Iraq

The people need to “speak up” against continuing this war. It is over. Iraq is close to or in a civil war. A civil war is not our fight. We can pray about this issue, but, if you read the Bible, you will see that God uses people to right wrongs and make changes in our world. Please write to everyone you can think of and push them to end this madness. We need to bring our troops home before we lose anymore of our true treasure – our men and women.

I have to ask- Where were you at with this war before if affected you personally?

It’s going to be hard for me to “forgive” the mindset that allowed (or enabled) BuschCos insanity in the first place.

Not a native, but I now live in rural Wisconsin which is more than a little rethuglican and very “holy”. I’ve been called anti-american, a traitor, told to move to Canada, among other not so nice things. This started a couple of years ago when I pointed out that Saddam had nothing to do with 9-11 and got progressivly worse.

“Hell I just voted for Bush because Kerry was gonna take my gun and pull an unborn fetus outta my daughter cause he hates Jesus.” Add in the boogie-man Saddam flying remote control WMD’s into my barnyard.

As soon as these fascists took over, they began stacking the system in their favor- from Delay’s redistricting schemes to electronic vote fraud. In the last 2 years, the system has been put in place for the neocons to win any election they choose.

They won, and they’re keeping it. Poll numbers mean nothing, because they have nothing to lose. The NEOCONS will win big in 2006, and you can expect reports of vote irregularity from all over the country. Once that’s done, we will begin to see the true face of the evil behind this stuff. 22 Blessed are ye, when men shall hate you, and when they shall separate you from their company, and shall reproach you, and cast out your name as evil, for the Son of man’s sake.
23 Rejoice ye in that day, and leap for joy: for, behold, your reward is great in heaven: for in the like manner did their fathers unto the prophets.
24 But woe unto you that are rich! for ye have received your consolation.
25 Woe unto you that are full! for ye shall hunger. Woe unto you that laugh now! for ye shall mourn and weep.
26 Woe unto you, when all men shall speak well of you! for so did their fathers to the false prophets.
27 ¶ But I say unto you which hear, Love your enemies, do good to them which hate you,
28 Bless them that curse you, and pray for them which despitefully use you.
29 And unto him that smiteth thee on the one cheek offer also the other; and him that taketh away thy cloke forbid not to take thy coat also.

The entire U.S. population? Including newborns and toddlers? Kindergartners and elementary school children? Mentally challenged people and those on ventilators and in comas? Interesting.

Gore lost. He is not President. Bush won without getting more votes. That must really bother the left.

Whatever happens in November will be too late. We have tax cuts, Alito and Roberts (and another one on the way). What do you have - a plan for impeachment that will backfire in your face the second you push it.

Yep, he started sending your folk to Liberia and S. America.

  78. nabil Says:

I want to know who they polled to get “30 percent approve of Bush’s handling of the war in Iraq”?

I dont know anyone that approves…….

  79. Barney Says:

I am a Republican thoroughly disgusted with President Bush who, early on, sold out the U. S. to AIPAC and SHARON with a promise to do this dirty work in Iraq, thus cherry picking his way through distorted intelligence concocted by the NEOCONS to get us into Iraq. I could not bring myself to vote for the b…… the second time, and I regret having done so the first time.

  80. WaltTheMan Says:

They called up Gary and IRI 337 times. They declared themselves Independent each time. For some reason, .4% of Republicans still support W and provided the push to 34%.

  81. stagemom Says:

pls, amanda, next time reverse it and highlight the disapproval ratings for effect.

  82. stewart Says:

stupid republicans, they just dont get it do they?
the numbers tank and there will be lower i am sure whats gone completetly wrong here is first that the administration has insulated itself for so long the trust me i know better than you the people mentality has unraveled like the wizard of oz.
but worse of all the government/administration for all its reassurances, has not bowed to the will of the people and the will of the people today is, not on your life on that port deal.
so one has to ask? why do it? i harken back to the watergate era “follow the money” and in the age of syestemic corruption on the part of the republican political machine as we are witness to on the evening news, let me say to you republican hacks who salivate at the rantings of your propagandists on fox news, who america is getting very impatient with, the republican who got grafted for this fast track secret port deal gets found out , there will be a rope at the end of a gallows and no sloberin for the cameras in a weak and whinny mea culpa isnt gonna save someone from getting their necks stretched for treason in the modern age!

  83. Glad, Damn Glad Says:

What a surprise. CBS comes up with another fraud. Republicans didn’t get a fair shake on the weighting on this one. There’s so much donkey lard drippin from this poll. Even after a weight adjustment, Democrats (not even likely voters) get some choreographed leading questions, big help from independents and a 15-20% advantage. With that handicap Bush should have a 20% approval rating. But go ahead and claim victory. What does it get you? 2008 is a long way away. You’re wasting your time campaigning against Bush. He’s not running in 2008.

btw, which presidents had a lower approval rating than Bush in the past 50 yrs?

  84. Mary Says:

Do any of you really think Bush will ever be held acountable for his destruction of our nation and the world? This entire administration must be impeached, not just Bush.
Why would we want Chaney for President? It frightens me that they will be in office for another 3 years. There is soooo much corruption in this administration that they will figure out a way to keep republican control in the house and senate. I am afraid that it may already be too late to save our nation from this dictatorship.

  85. Antagonist Says:

This poll was bogus. The deck was stacked to give CBS the results they wanted. It’s pretty ironic to see how gullible you free-thinkers are.

Clearly you didn’t READ the post, or you’d know what an idiot you are making of yourself by saying that. The poll was adjusted. Go read.

  87. Antagonist Says:

#89…and Dan Rather didn’t use forged documents. And you trust CBS polls? They’ve made idiots out of themselves, along with all of you who believe them.

I trust myself. I don’t need polls to tell me that the average American does not think the President is doing a good job.

But since our elected officials have lost touch with We the People, polls seem to be the only thing they rely upon to gauge the pulse of America. Sad.

  89. mighty aphrodite Says:

Antagonist - The progressive “educated idiots” like to note CBS’ adjusting the survey to account for the flawed methods they used. (My only observation for survey adjustments - - being a “big time!” news corp, you’d think CBS would have the wherewithal to ask that a survey be done correctly on it’s face.) But the omnipotent unbeliever KNOWS what “the average American” (ha!) thinks!! (Must be all those “average” corn fed Bible “thumpers” and latte drinkers she/it hangs with!)

I for one, am just praying for a Hillary ‘08 run. Run Hillary, run!

******Thank you, Barney - if you WERE a Republican, many conservatives have just one final request before you leave our midst - would you please take your anti-Semitic blather to the arena of the liberal progressives. You’ll feel right at home there!!!!

You said–I trust myself. I don’t need polls to tell me that the average American does not think the President is doing a good job.

Just how do you know what the average American thinks? I’m an average American and I think Bush has done a good job. I think the communication from the White House leaves a lot to be desired, and I don’t know what he’s doing with this port deal, but I still approve of him.

The funny thing is these people here think they’re in the mainstream. They’re so far left, they’re out on the fringes–and they don’t even realize it.

  93. gocatgo Says:

I keep asking the phone support folks in the various countries to please invade us, it really is the only hope.
Bush has declared war on America, and brotha you are now on the fightin side of me. He can’t get a blowjob, his dick is too little. That is why we are in the mess we are in.

  94. Think Progress » POLL: Bush Free Fall Continues in Fox News Poll Says:

[…] Following up on a dismal CBS News poll earlier this week, a new survey by FOX News brings more bad news for President Bush. From the poll: - 39 percent of Americans approve of the job Bush is doing, only the second time Bush has fallen below 40 percent in Fox polling […]

  95. Jack Says:

So, people.. anyone care to venture any ideas as to why the press waited so long to release the video tape? Does this mean the media is finally waking up to the dangerous direction this country is going and has just NOW decided to do their job? If they had the presidential briefing all this time, I just can’t understand why they’re just now releasing it. This is crazy. Welcomed, but CRAZY!

  96. John Says:

You can fool some of the people some of the time,

SOME OF THE PEOPLE ALL OF THE TIME “THESE ARE THE 34 PERCENT THAT SUPPORT BUSH NOW

But you can’t fool all the people all of the time…..This is why we “thinkers” see bush for what he is.
