ThinkFast is a new feature of ThinkProgress. (It’s still a work in progress – let us know what you think.)
The rich are getting richer and the poor are getting poorer. In 2004, “the net worth at the 90th percentile was $831,600 — or 62 times the net worth of the 10th percentile, which was $13,300.” In 2001, the top ten percent had 57 times as much as the bottom ten percent.
Two-thirds of the $3.27 billion in donations raised after Hurricane Katrina has been spent, leaving less than $1 billion that “will need to be stretched over years to rebuild lives and reconstruct the social fabric of the Gulf Coast.”
In 2004 and 2005, inspectors at the Sago coal mine said that 90 percent of the hundreds of safety and health violations endangered only one person. “Fines go up — by hundreds and potentially thousands of dollars — if an inspector finds numerous people at risk.”
Rep. Thomas Reynolds (R-NY) “is soliciting political contributions by in effect scalping tickets for NCAA ‘Sweet Sixteen’ games at Washington’s sold-out MCI Center for more than 30 times face value.”
Pentagon auditors found that Halliburton billed the Army for “more than $250 million in charges as potentially excessive or unjustified.” The Army has decided to pay the company almost the full amount anyway. Only $10 million will be withheld, because, according to an Army spokesperson “the contractor is not required to perform perfectly to be entitled to reimbursement.”
The Center for Economic and Policy Research finds that Bush’s Medicare prescription drug bill is riddled with “waste and inefficiency,” adding an extra $800 billion to the cost of prescription drugs over the next decade.
8%: The amount median income fell for householders under 35 from 2001 to 2004.
The EPA has “dropped its objections” to a plan by chemical firm DuPont to treat several million gallons of chemicals left over from a VX nerve agent disposal operation. Officials in two states opposed an earlier version of the plan over fears that traces of VX — a “pinhead-sized droplet” of which can kill an adult human — would enter the Delaware River, where the operation is located.
250: The number of pages of emails from Vice President Cheney’s office that were “recently located” and turned over to CIA leak special prosecutor Patrick Fitzgerald. In a letter last month, Fitzgerald charged that “many e-mails from Cheney’s office at the time of the Plame leak in 2003 have been deleted contrary to White House policy.”
A U.S. veteran suffering “bizarre symptoms after serving in the first Gulf War — blackouts, chest pain and numbness in the extremities” — says he was given placebos (sugar pills) instead of real medicine by his VA doctor.
And finally: Scotland reviving “weapons-grade whiskey.” The London Times reports that the fabled firewater “was said to be enough to kill a grown man.”
What did we miss? Let us know in the comments section.
You forgot Scotland’s police report about Bush’s bicycle outfit. Hillarious.
February 27th, 2006 at 9:06 amGood Morning America, how are ya,? Well it’s in print so now what we all knew any way can be read about instead of just felt. We are getting poorer and (they) are getting richer. Nothing seems to be getting better, but we can still hope……Blessings
February 27th, 2006 at 9:08 amThose lazy poor people should have three full time jobs and never sleep. It will help enrich those who have more.
What lazy bums those poor people are, who needs them anyway?

February 27th, 2006 at 9:11 amThe Army is going to go ahead and pay Halliburton over $2 BILLION dollars even though they are ripping the American taxpayers off, and our government KNOWS it…
… a NY Federal judge (David Tragar, Federal District Court-Bronx 718-613-2600 call and leave him a message) ruled to block the lawsuit of a Canadian born engineer Maher Arar who was illegally arrested and extradited (extraordinarily renditioned) to Syria where he was tortured and imprisoned in a rat-infested dungeon for 10 months…
…after 6 months the Gulf coast remains in tatters…
My God, what is it going to take for us to get up off of our pampered, cowardly as*es and demand some ACCOUNTABILITY from the traitors running our government?
…how much longer can we afford to sit back and take it up the a*s from the treasonous, criminal Bushite junta, and their accomplices within the poor/middle working class segments of our country in red state treasonous America?
…we’ve fallen, can we get back up?

February 27th, 2006 at 9:24 am#8 – No, Pres. Bush relied on Novak to provide the name of Valerie Plame to the public. The only difference is that he wasn’t held accountable for releasing the name of an active CIA NOC while other journalists were charged under existing laws.
Off topic – Texas support for Pres. Bush is now under 50%! Miracles DO happen! ;-)

February 27th, 2006 at 9:37 amWage growth in the bottom quartile has also been stagnant in real terms, ie growing at the rate of inflation, for the past quarter century.
That real wage stagnation has begun to ‘broaden’ since Bush took office. As in it hits the ‘middle class’ – although not the ‘upper middle’ to rich.
It’s more a fundamental lack of bargaining power – the workers are no longer wage setters but wage takers. That’s a decline in union member ship for sure but also the flood of imports that have essentially either destroyed ‘marginal’ manufacturing or forced the workers to take what they can get.
Interestingly, such subdued wage growth allows for less inflation which allows for lower interest rates which allows for increased borrowing and hence spending.
We all know Bush is one step away from Satan not for his business policy, although it’s miserable, but for his entire presidency. It’s been marked by failure, secrecy, lies, etc.
Everyone caught the fact that Santorum has been ‘fingered’ as inserting the ‘clarification’ in the Senate’s budget bill that will allow the ’synfuel’ (it’s nothing of the sort, they spray coal or waste coal with acid, lime, diesel, whatever they want and then burn it in a power plant) that allows them to claim the tax credits at their full value. Seems that since oil prices have risen, they shouldn’t be getting them, since synfuel was supposed to be an alternative to diesel/gas/etc. Now it’s a farce. Anyway, he reset it to 2004 oil prices so they can keep claiming the tax credits.
I wonder how many of them donated to his ‘charity’ or rather, his personal expense fund.
See, not a repub at all. Just not always in the group think or whatever you wish to call it on a minority of issues:)
February 27th, 2006 at 9:59 amThe VX deal is a bit disturbing just because they could easily dispose of the leftover ’salt’ (not as is sodium chloride) in a ’safe’ dump. The salt is not entirely harmless, but the EPA is basing their decision on the concentration in the water that they’ll be dumping it in. The idea is there will be so few PPM that it poses no risk.
This is the EPA that said NYC after 9/11 was perfectly okay. Now you have people dying from the crap that was in the air. And Whitman is being sued, personally:)
February 27th, 2006 at 10:02 amThe EPA has become a lapdog for the Bushies. Bush’s clear skies initiative has been a green light permitting more emissions; corporations are allowed to continue to pollute groundwater and other waterways with factory discharge; and now the EPA has determined that a WMD like VX is OK to drop into the Delaware river because it will be sufficiently diluted — and we are supposed to take them at their word as knowing what they are talking about — that they are keeping us safe. It would be a joke except it is too serious to laugh.

February 27th, 2006 at 11:02 amPRIVATIZATION is simply a wholesale transfer of property and land from the public domain into private hands.
It is not a tax-savings plan; it is not a ’small-government’
plan; and whether or not it is a reversible process, is questionnable.
ALOT of privatization has already occurred; it (the transfer of wealth from the public domain into private holdings) just has not been publicized widely.

February 27th, 2006 at 12:42 pm#35 I-Wrong-I, you said, “I highly recommend growing up that way.”(having parents that is)
Tell that to Martin (age 5) and Louise (age 2). Their father Michael (a dear friend of mine) was killed in Baghdad in April of 2004 when the humvee he was travelling in was hit by an IED. Michael was a 12 year Staff Sergeant in the US Army. He served his country with honor and distinction in order to fight for your right to spew the bilious dreck that you spew here on a daily basis. Sbortly after receiving news of her husband’s death, Katey (Michael’s wife) was served notice that she had 90 days to vacate her home in base housing and that she would have to fight the VA for her husband’s SGLI (death benefits). Katey has been forced to move home to her parents’ home (at 37 years old), take 2 jobs to try to make ends meet (a Staff Sergeant’s pay doesn’t allow for a lot of savings) and spend, what will eventually amount to, thousands of dollars to get the benefits that her husband was promised under the terms of his service to his, seemingly, ungrateful nation. Those of us who are her friends have helped out wherever we have been able but it has been too little and not often. If you honestly believe that we as a nation are better off under your Fuhrer, you are more deluded than I originally thought. Just because your personal situation may be slightly better, doesn’t mean that things aren’t tough all over for ALL manner of others in this country (not just crack addicts or prostitutes). Open your eyes fool! The bell is tolling and, I assure you that it shall eventually toll for you as well.

There’s a theory that “Gulf War Syndrome” is the result of drinking large quantities of diet sodas; the sweetener “Aspartame” does some pretty strange things if you het it up, including decomposing back to its original ingredients, one of which is wood-alcohol. Aspartame has never been adequately tested – sure, plenty of tests were carried out by the company that developed it, but the FDA itself published a 57-page report drawing attention to the dishonesty and inaccuracy of the company’s test methods. The company’s CEO vowed that he’d get the sweetener approved anyhow, and when he quit the company to go back into politics, one of his first acts was to appoint a new FDA commissioner, whose first act was to over-rule the government scientists and approve the stuff. That CEO’s name may be familiar to you. It was Donald Rumsfeld. What… rig intelligence to fit the policy? Rummy? How COULD I suggest such a thing?! Besides, 50% of the tests carried out so far on Aspartame show that it’s PERFECTLY SAFE. Unfortunately, those are the tests carried out by the company. All the OTHER tests disagree.
