Four Days After Katrina Struck, Bush Learned Of Failed Response From DVD Of News Reports

In tonight’s interview on ABC, Bush revealed how detached he was from the devastation of Hurricane Katrina:

VARGAS: When you look back on those days immediately following when Katrina struck, what moment do you think was the moment that you realized that the government was failing, especially the people of New Orleans?

BUSH: When I saw TV reporters interviewing people who were screaming for help. It looked — the scenes looked chaotic and desperate. And I realized that our government was — could have done a better job of comforting people.

According to Bush, he didn’t realize there was anything wrong with the administration’s response until almost four days after the hurricane. The first time he saw newscasts of the situation on the ground was on the morning of Sept. 2, when White House “Counselor [Dan] Bartlett made up a DVD of the newscasts so Bush could see them in their entirety as he flew down to the Gulf Coast the next morning on Air Force One.”

  1. Badmoodman says:

Bartlett can make Bush a DVD of tonight’s ABC interview so he can look at it four days from now and ask Bartlett why he wasn’t prepped for Vargas’ probing questions.

  2. Ron says:

The Green Zone in Baghdad is still heavily fortified, no matter how much the Iraqis are standing up and the coalition forces are standing down. It will remain as such.

ABC could have hired Cindy Sheehan as a temporary reporter. She is capable of asking some harder hitting questions than Elizabeth Jargon.

“Mr. President, why did you have me thrown out of the House during the State of the Union Address?”

Bushitler would have been woefully unprepared for that question. But, these days the news is used for propaganda purposes, not for finding facts and answers.

Josef Goebbels would be envious of the superb propaganda tecniques devised by the Pentagong.

  3. Mark says:

lol, yes. And he can put that together with a DVD of his comments to the press on Air Force One about the UAE port deal he didn’t know much about, but would defend with a veto if need be, dammit.

  4. EL CHUPACABRA says:

He doesn’t really care about the poor people anywhere. Why would NOLA be any different.

  5. beavercleaver says:

Did anybody at ABC think to U.A. this addicted, blowviated, brain addled, emotionally unavailable, cerebrally deprived, intellectually challenged weak sperm? This, ladies and germs, is the reason why this country doesn’t elect the product of a Romney goat and a hemlock stump. Tommorrow’s lesson: How to fit the Prez with a drool bib, when he’s so, so, soooooooo, UNRESPONSIVE. What a dope!

Did I say sensitive? Silly me – sensitive equals weakness and the macho man is anything but weak.

  8. Kenny H says:

Abby: you nailed it on the head. Bush should’ve said, “I didn’t hear about the chaos and desperation for four days. Of course, I didn’t care about the chaos and desperation . . . ever.”

I didn’t listen to the interview but I have no doubt that what you folks are posting is exactly what was said so I guess that Vargas just doesn’t have the balls to have asked him if he was kidding. I was wondering whether her expression at that moment showed anything along the lines of “WHAT?”

  19. John the Elder says:

Anyone who voted to put this individual in the White House should really be proud after reading about this interview for the choice they made. This individual is making all of those voters look like total idiots. It is a question of each of them owning what they have created. This one they cannot blame on Bill and Hillary. They have only themselves to thank for this mess.

State Department Report (2004) on UAE:

Problems remained in the Government’s respect for human rights. Citizens do not have the right to change their government. The Government restricted freedom of speech and of the press. The press practiced self-censorship. The Government restricted free assembly and association, and it restricted religious freedom by banning proselytizing of Muslims. The Government restricted the rights of workers, many of whom were not protected by labor laws. There are no labor unions. There were poor working conditions for some laborers, failure to pay wages, and abuse of foreign domestic servants in an economy in which 98 percent of the private sector workforce is foreign. There were no independent human rights organizations. Trafficking in women as prostitutes and very young foreign boys as camel jockeys continue to be serious problems, despite government pledges to end these practices.

  26. Bluestocking says:

I can only assume this means that Bush did not turn on the radio, watch one single television program, or pick up a newspaper on the last few days of his vacation — which strikes me as a little irresponsible for the leader of one of the world’s biggest superpowers. Judging by the media coverage, the only way that he could have honestly not known about Katrina would have been if he were on a deserted island or in some other way totally cut off from the outside world.

Then again, Bush more and more frequently appears to be totally cut off from the outside world even when he’s not on vacation…

I would not be too surprised if a bi-partisan articles of impeachment suddenly appear from Congress.

The stage is certainly set and all the ingredients are there.

It would not be too hard to impeach Bush and Cheney for gross incompetence in executing their constitutional duties, not to mention ample circumstantial evidence of unprecedented corruption.

As we get closer to the mid-term elections, what are we going to hear from the Republicans?
How about an exit strategy from Iraq? No? Not even an idea of an exit strategy? How about some kind of plan to help stop the sectarian strife from becoming a civil war? No? nothing? Nothing at all from the party that fabricated a tie between Iraq & al Quida out of whole cloth? No surprise there.

Nobody doubts that Saddam was a horrible person. Of course, this was only AFTER Pres. Reagan sold him weapons of mass destruction, and Sec. Rumsfeld shook his hand over the deal. The right-wing doesn’t want to remember THAT bit of news, oh no siree! Completely ignore the past! Well, except for anything to do with pres. Clinton, then he’s suddenly responsible for everything bad that Pres. Bush did during his time in office. The recession started in March of 2001? It was all because of Pres. Clinton! The terrorists attacked us on Sept 11th after reading about “Osama determined to hit us on our own soil using planes as bombs”?? It was all because of Pres. Clinton! Levee break? It was all because of Pres. Clinton!

All we hear from Republicans is “It was all because of Pres. Clinton!” and “Don’t blame US for our actions!”

Now, Pres. Bush wants to sell our ports to one of the few countries that supported the Taliban, and provided financial support to Osama bin laden, and the right wing refuses to hold Pres. Bush responsible for his actions. It’s interesting that the so-called party of “National Security” doesn’t seem to give a crap about our National security. Pres. Bush was unaware of the deal when asked about it, and then had the gall to say he’d veto any effort to stop the deal?!?!? How un-responsible can a President be?

Republican: the party of “responsibility is for someone else, not us!”

  85. Antagonist says:

    #86
You have no capacity for objectivity do you.
Clinton passed on Bin laden, tax dollars ear-marked for the levees was never spent on them, Congress is involved in the port deal. The right steps are being taken. All the left ever wants to do is hold Bush accountable for someone elses responsiblities. Katrina was a perfect example of that. An investegation revealed that there were failures at EVERY level of government. Do you hear the media beating up Mayer Nagin–NO! Do they beat up Gov. Blanco–NO. Only Bush. Why? because it advances the story line that Bush is bad. You’re hero Clinton didn’t do squat as president, except disgrace the office.

  86. America Knew. Bush Didn't. Katrina. says:

    Antagonist,
The Feds and COngressional leaders on both sides have already determined the Feds have a greater role in disasters of this size. It’s a matter of national security.

Nagin is an ex-Republican. What more can you say about that moron? Blanco was clearly overwhelmed. She, in addition to criticism, deserves pity.

Clinton? America? You and I? We all passed on Osama because collectively we felt attacks were a normal byproduct of oil acquisition. Those days of that attitude are coming to an end. From one side or the other…

  89. Paul in Mexico says:

    Unbelievable.

It is my understanding that the Bills of Impeachment go to one of two places. Either the Governmental Affairs Committee or the House Ethics Committee.

Pukes control the house, so nothing is done, the bills are note even logged in as is house procedure.

Rep. Conyers, Michigan, can give more information. He has personally filed several bills of impeachment, to no avail.

  90. Democrat Soldier says:

#87 – You ignore history when it suits you, don’t you?

Pres. Clinton tried to assassinate Osama, but it was written off by his critics as trying to distract from the impeachment hearings. Yup, you ignored that one completely.

Pres. Clinton never ear-marked money for the levees. Yet another fabrication by the right wing. The fact is that the funding for the levees was reduced by Pres. Bush.
“By 2003 the federal funding for the flood control project essentially dried up as it was drained into the Iraq war. In 2004, the Bush administration cut funding requested by the New Orleans district of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers for holding back the waters of Lake Pontchartrain by more than 80 percent. Additional cuts at the beginning of this year…forced the New Orleans district of the Corps to impose a hiring freeze.”
    http://www.factcheck.org/article344.html

Pres. Bush refuses to admit that his cutting of the funding MIGHT have been a bad thing. Pres. Bush yet again refuses to take responsibility for his actions, and you’re enabling him by not expecting him to accept responsibility. It’s sad that the ultra-radical right wing has come to this, but not too surprising.

Congress is only getting involved in the Ports deal because Pres. Bush has threatened to veto any legislation that might possibly stall the deal for any reason at all. That is a fact.
    http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,185677,00.html

The right refuses to accept ANY responsibility for ANY of their actions or lack-of-actions. THAT is a fact! The so-called party of “personal responsibility” seems to only feel that taking responsibility for actions is for other people and not for themselves. You can’t even accept the fact that Pres. Bush refuses to take responsibility for his actions!

It looks like the Republicans have become like what they claim about the Democrats: unable to accept personal responsibility for their actions. And you, sir, selectively ignore the past and fabricate the present to suit your tastes when your rose-colored glasses give you a hint of the truth about the current administration.

The difference between the two of us is that I accept the fact the Democrats are not the perfect party and make mistakes. I also accept the fact that sometimes I’m wrong and can make mistakes. You, on the other hand, seem to never admit that you might, just might, be wrong about anything, and you continue to believe that the Republicans can never make any mistake in any way shape or form, and that Pres. Bush might, just might, not be a perfect person.

No the difference between you and me, is that I can see things objectively. You on the other hand, filter all information through your hatred for Bush. Not once have I ever claimed the Republicans or Bush to be without fault. All of you who continually bash Bush have invested too much emotional baggage. You’ve lost your objectivity.

    I agree with #31!

It is time to organize a march on Washington and demand his resignation. Our “Representatives” aren’t representing us. The People are going to have to take back control of their Government. We need to march. We need to have a clear organized message and a list of talking points that just get repeated over and over and over. These people need to go!

Seriously, how do we actually get a march started?

  98. Democrat Soldier says:

#97 – “No the difference between you and me, is that I can see things objectively.”

That’s a good one! Keep repeating it and eventually it will become “true”.

I have not heard you hold Pres. Bush accountable for a single failure, nor have I heard you question any motive of any Republican. You only seem to filter information through your hatred for Democrats. Your inability to objectively view the extra-legal contortions of the current administration exposes your inherent bias against Democrats.

I recall the days when Republicans were ethical and moral and adhered to values. Those days died a quick death with Pres. Bush and his “healthy forests (by clear cutting them)” and “clear skies (by not prosecuting polluting big-companies)” legislation.

Here’s objectivity for you: I though it was great when Pres. Bush said “Osama bin Laden: dead or alive!” I supported attacking Afghanistan when they were hosting terrorist camps. I was horrified when Pres. Bush said “I don’t know where he is. I — I’ll repeat what I said. I truly am not that concerned about him.”

Now that Pres. Bush Flipped from his first statement, he’s Flopped back to “worrying” about Osama bin Laden again. Do I hear you “objectively” looking at Pres. Bush and his actions/statements? No, you don’t. You “subject” all your perceptions of Pres. Bush and the Republican party against your inherent bias against the Democrats.

I admit that I have a bias towards Republicans. Especially morally corrupt and ethically bankrupt Republicans. I can, however, change my perceptions if the argument shows that my belief is incorrect or based on false assumptions. Until proof to the contrary is provided, then I will continue to believe that Pres. Bush is a liar and “flip-flopper”-In Chief.

unbelievable’s students will benefit more when we get rid of Bush. He has cut $51 billion in student loan and Pell Grant funding in the past three months alone. Not to mention section 9528 of the No Child Left Behind Act that requires middle schools and higher to give up the names addresses and telephone numbers for students to military recruiters or lose their federal funding.

Bush is no friend of schools or student. He’d be smarter if he was.

  105. Democrat Soldier says:

#101 – Spudge_Boy, don’t you find the question somewhat disingenuous?

“Do you guys have any coherent plan or direction…”

Pray tell, what is the “plan or direction” for Pres. Bush?
Does he have an exit plan? Not one that he’s shared with anyone who’s willing to talk about it.
Could it be that his “exit strategy” just doesn’t exist?
Could it be that his “exit strategy” is full of holes or un-workable?

Interesting that he has no metrics on what would constitute “Iraq standing up their own forces” or eventually returning control of the Iraqi nation back to the Iraqi people. I guess as long as Pres. Bush doesn’t explain what he’s trying to do in Iraq then he can’t be held responsible when more and more American troops and civilians are killed and the country descends into civil war. You know, the “civil war” he said wasn’t going to happen in Iraq about a year ago?

“Yes yes, but what is the second part?”

That is the Bush administration to a tee. They don’t have the middle part. So, their episode would be.

I couldn’t possible agree more Spudge. No Child Left Behind is horrific. It’s all about jugdment by standardized testing, in a species that is largely visually dominant in its learning capacities, and very ‘hands on’. And then the Right blames some fitchfork toting demon for why these kids commit suicide under the pressure of making straight A’s, bieng perfect and popuklar while being Captain of the football team or Cheerleading Squad, Student Council President, and accepted into Harvard on a scholarship.

We don’t value individuality on any level. We’ve stigmatized the perfect child and we go and then judge all others by that trophy case. It is not only unfair, but frankly, boring and cliche’.

I’m tired of the homogenization. And if anyone wants to do anything to help education – fight to stop putting 30 children in one classroom. Tax dollars for textbooks, not bullets, bombs and welfare for the rich.

  108. Spudge_Boy says:

    Spudge,

Don’t get me started… I agree with your comments and have repeatedly uttered them myself. And this is just my first year in the system.

You’re right – we are training them to take tests on inane information. Who gives a rat’s ass that “The temperature on Venus is about 460 degrees C”? I try to teach them about Greenhouse Effect and how that affects temperature so that they will then be able to deduce that life on Venus is not possible for humans due to the associated intense heat build up, and then relate that what is going on here. But no – the have to memorize empty facts to pass the stupid exams. 460 C is what is important… Nothing of actual value.

I tell my students that if it weren’t for the CCRTs, SATs and GREs of catagorizing, that we wouldn’t have any. We’d do projects and field trips and labs and everyting would some how be related to life in the real world.

So now, my hands too are tied. November 2008 can’t come soon enough.

Hope you make enough money to afford college. Sick what this Administration has done to grants and loans. Makes even a Pacifist want to smack some people around :)

  115. Bruce Gorton says:

    My take on America.

This all lies on Hollywood’s shoulders.

You see, Hollywood has this love of the loveable idiot. You know how it is, you have the bright person playing the villain and more often then not the hero is some sort of retard. The traditional American hero could be any Adam Sandler character – Davey Crocket stand aside here comes the Waterboy.

So that is what you eventually voted for. Hollywood has so conditioned the American mindset that Americans just cannot bring themselves to not trust a complete idiot with total power.

And this has led to what you have now; the Right Wing movie zombies thinking “But he is about to make good all of a sudden and the people with brains will eat their words” much like as what happens in every second American comedy. They will continue to stand by their chimp in chief because frankly they simply cannot see that a screw-up is a screw-up because screw-ups screw-up.

What is needed now is a serious shift in American culture, away from the stupid and sub-par and towards the intellegent. In the 60’s Bob Dylan did it for you, now America needs a more permanent solution to the problem.

  116. Bruce Gorton says:

    Spudge_Boy

What is your daughter wanting to study? Does America have something like UNISA maybe (http://www.unisa.ac.za/) which you can register her with so she can study part-time or is it all on campus out there?

  117. Spudge_Boy says:

You make it sound like you respectfully disagree with Bush. Who are you trying to kid?

I don’t repectfully disagree with Bush. I think he is a retard. I have mde that quite clear. Other people can respectfully disagree with him, but I won’t make any excuses for hi incompetence. None. You should know me by now.

  118. Spudge_Boy says:

What is your daughter wanting to study?

She wants to study Pharmacology. But the way it is looking, she will end up being a Pharmacy Assistant, rather than a Pharmasist. Big difference in pay.

  119. Bruce Gorton says:

Pity it wasn’t accounts or I would have said you would be cheaper sending her over here. Pharmacology, I don’t know. Have a look see if America has a reasonable corrospondence school (reasonable as in, not a diploma mill) which she can use to achieve her degree. It is much harder then doing it full time, but it is an alternative.

  123. Democrat Soldier says:

Once again, Antagonist cannot tell us what the Republican “plan or direction” for Iraq is. Just “more of the same” partisan hate for anyone who dares question “the man” sitting in the White House.

    Plan for the military:

1 – Build a permanent military base in Iraq that will eventually be turned over to the Iraqi forces. This “base” will be where the Iraqi forces will be trained. (No-bid contracting will NOT be allowed!) This will prove the commitment of the US and the “coalition of the billing” for securing Iraq.

2 – Coordinate with the UN to get Arabic/Farsi speaking military personnel to conduct the training. Yes, this means working WITH the UN. We just don’t have the personnel that know enough Arabic/Farsi to do the training. We’ve got tons that know Russian, though!!!

3 – Send upper Officers & Enlisted out of the country for advanced training. (O3 & E-6 and up) This would ensure you have a properly trained cadre to support the force rather than expect OTJ training to weed out the bad apples.

3 – Begin Basic & Advanced training for the Iraqi forces. It would take about 12-18 months before the first battalion to “stand up” and begin their jobs. As soon as the personnel from #3 complete their training, set them up with our forces that are training the military at the permanent base in Iraq.

4 – Conduct parallel actions with both Iraqi and non-Iraqi forces to base-line the knowledge and experience. Once the Iraqi battalion takes over the job, start sending American battalions back home.

5 – Metrics for this would include time-in-grade and time-in-job, tied to performance judged by three tiers: Iraqi officers, American officers, Third Party officers (selected from the “coalition of the billing”). These metrics would be defined using concrete parameters, not the vague “when we say they’re ready” one used by Pres. Bush.

6 – During this time, get the military infrastructure in place to support both internal security forces for the sectarian strife currently heating up, and external security forces to keep Iraq from continuing as the terrorist training ground that it’s become since we didn’t secure the borders properly because we were SO interested in securing the oil production facilities.

Of course, this only addresses the Military of Iraq. It doesn’t address the police forces, nor the government facilities & control, nor the judicial infrastructure to support the government. Then again, this is MUCH more than Pres. Bush has offered to the American people. His idea of “success” depends on the day you ask him, and how much he has to blame others for his massive failures in Iraq & Afghanistan.

  125. Paul in LA says:

“Rep. Conyers, Michigan, can give more information. He has personally filed several bills of impeachment, to no avail.” — Paul in Mexico

    I don’t believe that’s the case.

    • Up until the 2004 election, Conyers made it clear that he felt the election had to occur before a bill could be filed.

    • Subsequently, he has made it clear that he felt more investigation was needed before filing. He published ‘Constitution in Crisis’ in December 05, which specifically states that more investigation is needed.

    • Since December, he has (apparently) worked with Carl Sheeler in Rhode Island, a US Senate candidate (an Independent), to get RI to file impeachment.

We have heard nothing of attempted filing as Paul in Mexico claims.

I believe what he is saying is untrue.

  126. Paul in LA says:

“It is my understanding that the Bills of Impeachment go to one of two places. Either the Governmental Affairs Committee or the House Ethics Committee.” — Paul in Mexico

    INCORRECT.

    From http://www.carlsheeler.com:

    “Steps Toward Impeachment…

    1. Impeachment starts informally with the people.

    2. A member of the House of Representatives refers charges to the House Judiciary Committee. OR, using a little known precedent, a State Legislature can pass a Resolution of Impeachment and transmit that to the US House through their Representative.

    3. The House Judiciary Committee considers the charges and adopts a resolution to conduct an inquiry.

    4. House of Representatives passes the resolution by a majority vote.

    5. The House Judiciary Committee conducts the inquiry or investigation into the crimes.

    6. The House Judiciary Committee approves articles of impeachment by a majority.

    7. The House of Representative debates each article and passes at least one with a majority vote. Bush is now officially “impeached”.

    8. The Senate conducts a trial and convicts with a 2/3 majority vote.

    9. The President, and/or his VP and others, are removed from office.”

Why Paul in Mexico is misleading this blog is an open question. But with two pieces of false information given, I’d say we are being spoofed. Given the similarity of his handle with my own, and the topic, which is something I have worked hard for over the last six years, I’d say it’s a troll.

  127. Amy says:

#127 and #128 I think Paul in Mexico is referring to H.RES.635

  128. Paul in LA says:

What makes you think that, Amy?

A bill to investigate, in order to gather more information, is NOT an impeachment.

Nancy Pelosi will not allow an impeachment bill to go forward. She insists (correctly) that she would have to be Speaker of the House first (i.e., the Dems in the majority).

I agree. The reasoning is clear — a bill of impeachment wouldn’t pass the House, so it would damage the Dems.

    Conyers agrees as well.

What ‘Paul in Mexico’ is doing is LYING. Why is anyone’s guess. But the subject is a bit too serious for joshing.
