New evidence has emerged that key agencies of the United Arab Emirates may have been infiltrated by al-Qaeda. In May or June of 2002, al Qaeda officials wrote a letter to the UAE government claiming the emirates were “well aware” of the infiltration.
The letter, translated by the United States Government, is publicly available on the website of the West Point Combating Terrorism Center. The intro:
The key sentence:
During the initial 30-day review, the Coast Guard raised concerns that Dubai Ports World, which is owned by the UAE, could be infiltrated. An unclassified Coast Guard document cautioned, “There are many intelligence gaps, concerning the potential for DPW or P&O assets to support terrorist operations, that precludes an overall threat assessment”
The existence of the al-Qaeda letter – known officially as AFGP-2002-603856 – was first reported in a little noticed column by Scripps Howard.

March 1st, 2006 at 6:27 pmHave you guys ever noticed the semblance of the name Al-Kadi (the al-taqwa business guy) and the Word Al-Qaeda?
March 1st, 2006 at 6:28 pmHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
These guys are a joke! I’m truly shocked! Has the president EVER cared about our SECURITY?
March 1st, 2006 at 6:29 pmPerhaps this will be the smoking gun that will finally topple this FRAUDLENT ADMINISTRATION. BUSH MUST GO!
March 1st, 2006 at 6:33 pmRush limbaugh started off his show today with the comment, I will show you how disengenious the Democrats are about their opposition to this deal” So does that mean that any GOP opposition to this deal is genuine? Anything Bi- Partisan kills the conservatives , then it’s the name calling RINO thing. Also how can they say the Democrats are racist but THEY support racial profiling in this country OF OUR OWN CITIZENS?
March 1st, 2006 at 6:34 pmHow many smoking guns are there going to be, Hardy? I thought it would have happened a while ago.
March 1st, 2006 at 6:34 pmThere are so many smoking guns these days, that no one can see through the fog and remove these Bush&Co guys, ASAP!
March 1st, 2006 at 6:36 pmIs this LEGIT? It looks almost TOO damming.
March 1st, 2006 at 6:42 pmthis will help to reduce Bush’s overall popularity even further, especially eroding support from his republican base. It’s good that Bush is arrogant (helps aid his removal) but he’s not as stupid as many think. Bush will have Rove spinning faster than a centrifuge. Expect silence, denials, refutations of the documents authenticity, coercion of republican dissidents, statements that ‘the UAE of 2006 are not the UAE of 2002′ etc, etc.
American seaports and airports must be owned, operated, controlled and secured by Americans, not the British or any other country. This surely is a ‘no brainer’!
March 1st, 2006 at 6:49 pmIf Georgie continues with his endorsement of this deal, it will certainly be the end for him. Happy Happy, Joy Joy!!!
March 1st, 2006 at 6:50 pm#9 - This surely is a ‘no brainer’!
March 1st, 2006 at 6:52 pmI would think so, British Gary!
Looks like time to pull in the weasels and find a way out of this deal. How many of Bush’s plans have worked since he got into office? ZERO.
March 1st, 2006 at 6:52 pmUnfortunately this is just another fact that could be really good ammunition for an Impeachment, however the Senate and House are paralyzed by Neo-cons. This might take a popular movement to force the political hacks to actually do their job and protect the country and constitution.
Personally, I favor a large scale civil protest event like a March on Washington. Good for the media coverage and hard for the hacks to ignore.
March 1st, 2006 at 6:56 pmThere is now a campaign under way by people inside the administration to expose the fraud of the Bush/Rove Chimp Factory.
The news will be like this every day now.
Bush will be in the 20% points in the polls soon.

What guarantees do we have that the UAE intelligent services infiltrating DP World?
What guarantees do we have that DP World mangers do not get “debriefed” by UAE intelligence?
I’m just askin’.
March 1st, 2006 at 6:58 pmThe DP World deal is tied to the fact that the UAE, Dubai specifically will be partners with the US in our war on Iran. See the “New ‘Office of Iranian Affairs’ Outlined in State Department Cable” thread for post number 14.
March 1st, 2006 at 6:59 pmThe first I read about was in the New York Post about 4 days ago.
March 1st, 2006 at 6:59 pmThe letter is legit, I followed the links and downloaded the entire letter from the U S Military Academy’s Counter Terrorism Center, one reason just in case it has to disappear now………..
March 1st, 2006 at 7:09 pm[…] Think Progress is reporting a breaking story that the UAE government *may* have been infiltrated by Al Queda in 2002 or around that time. They will likely be updating the story as more information becomes available. […]

Concentrate upon the concrete.
The DP World contract is the first brick of the Middle East Free Trade Agreement (MEFTA). We are negotiating a free trade agreement as we speak. This is trading goods for security, go google UAE Free Trade, and state the provable.

March 1st, 2006 at 7:21 pmWe need a woman for President. The testosterone for the last 3000 years has finally mutated into a world head butting contest and like the world our heads are flat. I would like to be proud of my country for leading by example not by Taliban style autocracy.
March 1st, 2006 at 7:36 pmthe same Adm. Gilmour, as pictured in the photo at coast guard link, was on cspan tuesday morning - he stated that the quote of concern was from just 1 paragraph out of a 50 page (or some #) report - he was trying to back away from those concerns, saying that the coast guard was really ok with this deal…
March 1st, 2006 at 7:36 pmactually he didn’t look that convinced himself…
the other guest was jayson ahern, from Customs and border protection - of course he was fine with it also…
i’d like to know that they, and others, are choking right about now…
Wow, the USA and UAE have so much in common.
March 1st, 2006 at 7:37 pmThe UAE Government was infilitrated by terrorists.
The USA Government was infilitrated by terrorists.
The UAE Government knows about it and does nothing.
The USA Government knows about it and does nothing.
What a match made in Hell.
Sorry, I don’t get it. Al-Qaida claims to have infiltrated the UAE - surely that’s not a reason to distrust the UAE?
What if they claim to have infiltrated Japan, or the UK, or the US government? Will that mean we should not trust those governments?
I am against the port deal, and I bear no love for Bush’s government, but this seems a totally meaningless letter. If it was a letter from the UAE to al-Qaida, then that would be different (and damning), but al-Qaida routinely overstates it’s power and influence, and obviously has good reason to sow any distrust it can. Why should we take their word for this?
March 1st, 2006 at 7:38 pmTalk about the shit hitting hte fan for Bush, there is a new video of Bush being breif before Hurricane Katrina with Michael Brown stating this is “the big one” and Bush responding with “we are fully prepared”
Bush doesn’t ask one question.

How will the trolls spin this one.
March 1st, 2006 at 7:38 pmChaomancer, here is the deal. 911 has changed everything , well here, you read what VP Cheney said on MTP: You tell me if the question you just asked about the legitimacy of this thread cannot be answered by the VP’s comments.; http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/3080244/
March 1st, 2006 at 7:43 pmThey already did spin it. They said they could not have anticipated the problems because they didn’t think it was going to be a category 5.
March 1st, 2006 at 7:45 pm#30 Yes and after the briefings with the knowledge that one of the worst Hurricanes in the nations history was about to hit, Bush goes to crawford to relax instead of staying in DC where he could have actually worked on the problem on day one not visit after day four.
March 1st, 2006 at 7:47 pmWhat makes me mad is that these teleconference meetings with the president were common knowledge. NPR did a story about this right after the hurricane. Only difference now is there is video.
March 1st, 2006 at 7:51 pmAnyhow, I think Brown is redeemed. Brown was clearly thrown under the bus. This is what happens to Bush cronies. Brown was just a nice guy, after all.
This is a fun thread but check this shit out.

March 1st, 2006 at 8:00 pmI questioned the legitimacy of the document too, but it is indeed posted on the West Point site and also the National Defense University site. Not sure what that means except that it’s not a recently written prank.

March 1st, 2006 at 8:06 pmTricky Dick made it down to 24. Course he was impeached.
On the flip side, Bill Clinton was impeached, and maintained a healthy 65 percent.
How you ask?
Simple. People respond to an intelligent man, but a fool invariably wears on them.

People concerned about this hurricane story owe it to themselves and to Neocons to listen to this story. It’s thrilling.
March 1st, 2006 at 8:10 pm#4, #6, and #7 I’ve never been quite sure what that term ’smoking gun’ was supposed to mean, but I guess it means ‘evidence’; and seeing as how this ‘al-qaeda’ link to the UAE was known to Federal authorites like the Coast Guard and the U.S. Army’s Military Academy (in addition to the 9-11 Commission, the Joint Congressional Inquiry, and all clear thinking and reasonable People in the world), it, the ‘al-qaeda’ link, seems the reason for the administration going end-around the Congress, the Press, and the People, on the Dubai Ports World ‘contract’…
…it seems the reason, the evidence, or the ’smoking gun’, for that end-around ‘contract’.
#21 If Mrs. Greenspan really said that on Hardball, I hope we see it cited officially here at ThinkProgress, or other such sites; that type of commentary, a defense of the ‘contract’ by making threatening predictions about the opposition to it, could easily be perceived not as predicting a ‘riot’, but as attempting to incite one.
What if we were to see tomorrow demonstrations and riots over the ’slander’ and ‘oppression’ of the UAE and Dubai Ports World?
This would make Mrs. Greenspan either a seer, or an instigator.
March 1st, 2006 at 8:11 pmPull up a chair. Relax. Listen to the story.

March 1st, 2006 at 8:12 pmActually I have to admit I was surprised at Bush putting wheels down in Afghanistan. Particularly bringing Laura.
There is no real way they could guaruntee their saftey in a war zone like that, particularly travelling in helicopter at one point.
I think its a clear sign of how desperate they are right now to make Bush look like the war president.
I just think its kinda sick he took Laura with him, risking her life too. I would have left her home if I were him.
March 1st, 2006 at 8:13 pmWorfeus
I think it has more to do with the scaled down traveling press corp not being in a position to ask questions on “official” visits. Timely, is the term I would use.
March 1st, 2006 at 8:19 pmLooks like the smoking gun to me. Stick a fork in this deal, it’s done.
March 1st, 2006 at 8:20 pmYes Monica,

March 1st, 2006 at 8:22 pmThat concept has merit citizen, but to tell you the truth, the first thing that came into my head when I heard he was going is that maybe the RNC is trying to take him out.
Why the hell would the send the most hated man in Afghanistan, to Afghanistan?
The secret service cannot protect him there, they shoot those choppers down all the time with shoulder fired missles, and yet the choppered him in?
March 1st, 2006 at 8:23 pmI wonder how long it will take the Bush whoremouth, Chertoff, to publicly state, “this letter reveals nothing new, the ports are secure. The ports are overseen and controlled by public port authorities, U.S. Customs and Border Protection, harbour police, and the Coast Guard.”

******Very chivalrous of you WarFACE. But unlike Hillary, maybe she really “does stand by her man”. Besides, the reports of Taliban insurgency (in a country the size oof Afghanistan) are very isolated - but I know if you’re a devotee of Air unAmerica, you’d never know that. (Kind of like the crackpots in Tennessee who plotted, planned and spread the vicious, vile KKK. They had no chance of upending the Union but the fear and terror they spread was grotesquely frightful.)
“But unlike Hillary, maybe she really “does stand by her manâ€.”
Only the republicans can produce a “hybrid” female eunuch.
March 1st, 2006 at 8:38 pmI’ll say it again.
Bush doesn’t just desire this UAE/U.S. port deal to go through (because of family connections or whatever), he NEEDS this UAE port deal to go through.
In fact, Bush NEEDS this deal so badly he is willing to threaten Congress with his first veto to see that they don’t get in the way. And, his administration blew-off the federally-mandated 45-day security review, and instead conducted a cursory review, at best, that didn’t even check into the UAE’s ties to the al Qaeda.
So, Bush is desperate to see that this deal occurs. Why???
One possibility exists that no one dares to mention, because it sounds so nutty.
Bush, and his rogue administration, NEEDS the UAE’s help in the event of Bush starting a war with IRAN. Well, look at where the UAE is situated, close by the Strait of Hormuz and across from Iran.
Which made me wonder about Oman, which also is located across from Iran at the Strait of Hormuz, a vital passageway for much of the world’s oil.
Oh, concurrent with the time-line of the UAE port deal, the Sultanate of Oman early this year signed a Free Trade Agreement with the Bush administration.
You do understand the strategic importance of the UAE and Oman?
If I were to start a war with Iran, I’d want to be damn sure that the Strait of Hormuz remained open. To do this, I would want to establish a beachhead on the Iranian side of the strait. And to do this, I would require a D-Day-like staging area opposite where I wanted to setup the beachhead. Thus, in the case of the Strait of Hormuz, the importance of the UAE and Oman becomes self-evident in case some idiot starts a war with Iran.
In my view, what we are seeing with the desperately-sought UAE port deal and the already completed Omani Free Trade Agreement is the final stage of war preparations against Iran by the Bush administration.
So, if I were in Congress, I would demand that whatever U.S. General is in charge of U.S. forces in the UAE should immediately appear before Congress and testify about any unusual war preparations occurring under them in the UAE. (And who knows what’s happening in that little part of Oman that actually sits right on the Strait of Hormuz).
I’d definitely want to check it out. Because, from all indications, the Bush administration, being very secretive by nature, are doing something very sneaky and even behind the backs of our representatives in Congress.
I bet the Bush administration is planning on starting war with Iran within the next month or so. I hope I’m wrong. God, I hope I’m wrong.
Because Iran will end up like Iraq, or like Hurricane Katrina, but much, much worse.
March 1st, 2006 at 8:41 pmOracle
Keep your powder dry. Thanks to the Eunuch King, we are in no position to project power anywhere in the world.
March 1st, 2006 at 8:43 pmDjibouti signed an agreement in May 2000 with the Dubai Port Authority (DPA), giving it the right to manage and invest in, for 20 years, the port of Aden, Yemen. This is where the USS Cole was attacked on Oct. 12th 2000, shortly after the new contract was in place.
The attack on the USS Cole was carried out by two Yemeni’s holding Saudi nationality. Sources said that the operation’s main planner, an Arab living in the UAE called Mohammed Omer, was giving his orders to the group members in Aden by phone, and by a code with one of the suspects called Gamal Al-Badwi, a Yemeni national.
These Yemeni’s jihadist’s had inside information, such as the estimated time of arrival of the USS Cole, as they made preparations to execute their deadly blast. This means that the port operations must have leaked this crucial timeframe, in order for them to be ready and have their small boat in the waters as part of the port operations and procedures; the attackers’ boat was mistaken for a harbor craft assisting with the mooring, i.e., to be secured with lines or anchors. There was no co-coordinated effort to track the movement of small boats in the harbor, which falls on the port operations, and which was the DUBAI responsibility; alerting security to such odd and unidentified activity is also port operations responsibility.
Dubai Ports World is not worthy of such contracts as have just been awarded because the USS Cole was attacked under their watch. How can any fact this blatant be ignored?
Coincidence?

March 1st, 2006 at 9:04 pm#56, Citizen80203, that will only happen ‘if’ there is a terrorist outrage at a port.
The likelihood of this happening in reality is probably very slim but the port security argument is great for undermining Bush’s ’strong on terror’ veneer of war profiteering.
Both Brown (when he was in charge) and Chertoff are voluntarily politicizing their Departments by publicly stating the messages Rove/Cheney and Bush want the public to hear. False assurances that ‘everything possible is being done’ and ‘the ports are secure’ (rather than emphasising the truth of their reservations) only mean Brown and Chertoff are cringing jobsworths and paid whoremouths.
WORFEUS, love your piccies!

You are both correct. The Naval Base (and Airbase) in the UAE and larger than a bumbling fool are factors in the DP World deal.
Tomorrow the contract is owned by DP World. It will be almost impossible to kill, and will certainly be fought out in court. Alito and the “Yoo and the theory of everything” anyone?
First and foremost is MEFTA and the billions such a free trade agreement will add to certain corporation profits. Add the bumbling fool’s family and economic cronies and you have the Whitehouse(TM).

Bleak outlook for Afghanistan
At the Senate hearing, Lt. Gen. Michael Maples, director of the Defense Intelligence Agency, painted a similarly stark picture of Afghanistan.
While the government has made progress in disarming private militias, Maples said, his agency estimates that violence from the Taliban and other anti-coalition groups in Afghanistan increased 20 percent last year.
“Insurgents now represent a greater threat to the expansion of Afghan government authority than at any point since late 2001, and will be active this spring,†Maples said in his written statement.
Afghan insurgents increased their suicide attacks almost fourfold and more than doubled their use of improvised explosive devices, he said.
I’ll stick with the General on this one MA.

But, rather than snipe on a sidebar comment, why aren’t you defending the UAE-Al Qaeda deal to take over our ports? You are a proud and vocal member of the Bush Cult Community….why aren’t you telling us how allowing Al Qaeda to review our port security is a good thing for this country? We know that no one in this administration was aware that terrorists would fly planes into buildings…now we are told that no principal in the commission reviewed this deal on port security. Is this a failure of imagination or personal financial security trumping our national security.

CIA agent alleged to have met Bin Laden in July
French report claims terrorist leader stayed in Dubai hospital
Anthony Sampson
Thursday November 1, 2001
The Guardian
Two months before September 11 Osama bin Laden flew to Dubai for 10 days for treatment at the American hospital, where he was visited by the local CIA agent, according to the French newspaper Le Figaro.
The disclosures are known to come from French intelligence which is keen to reveal the ambiguous role of the CIA, and to restrain Washington from extending the war to Iraq and elsewhere.
Bin Laden is reported to have arrived in Dubai on July 4 from Quetta in Pakistan with his own personal doctor, nurse and four bodyguards, to be treated in the urology department. While there he was visited by several members of his family and Saudi personalities, and the CIA.

March 1st, 2006 at 10:45 pmworfeus, I love your piccies but as I stated in post #9, Bush is not as stupid as people like to believe him to be.
Bush uses this to detract attention from his subterfuge, I think #57 by the oracle is a spine-chilling truth and much more on track. Bush is not stupid, he is a fierce fascist with a huge, wealthy base behind him and has been calculating control of the middle-east via warmongering for a great many years.
He is accomplishing his goals while people underestimate him. I think by the time most of America come to realise just how politically clever and manipulative he is, it will be far too late.
March 1st, 2006 at 10:52 pmYou may be right British guy.
I don’t know for sure of course, I can only go with my gut.

But you may be right. It could be him. But I would look to Cheney and co.
March 1st, 2006 at 11:02 pmBush is bright enough to play president but has no curiosity about anything, he wants people to shift the intelligence for him and provide him with choices, thus his black and white approach to almost everything. Intellectually he is not stupid, but neither does he ever challenge his views or the ideas on very much. He has a distorted worldview growing up in a family of wealth and power that leaves him incapable to understand the problems of the vast majority of the American people who go from paycheck to paycheck. They don’t have daddy’s rich friends including some Arabs to bail them out each time a business venture goes south.
March 1st, 2006 at 11:50 pmThe Bush Crime Family and The Carlyle Group (also part of the Bush Crime Family) have been doing business with the UAE and more particularly with Dubai for decades now. Brother Neil Bush spends more time (raising money) in Dubai than he spends in the U.S. and every time the Idiot Bush (that’s W) has failed in a business venture it has been the House of Saud (Saudi Arabia) that has bailed him out financially… with BILLIONS of dollars in aid either given to the Bush Crime Family or given to The Carlyle Group. Those of us who lived thru the Nixon Presidency remember the words of Deep Throat … “FOLLOW THE MONEY!!!” and this should be the focus in taking down the Idiot Bush. The big lesson of the Nixon downfall is that Presidential POWER is a gift of the people of this country, and that same Presidentil POWER CAN BE TAKEN AWAY BY THE PEOPLE. The march of a million concerned Americans on Washington D.C. protesting the policies, the incompetence, and the lawlessness of W and his cronies might just send that blabbering fool of a President back to Crawford, NEVER TO BE HEARD FROM AGAIN.
March 1st, 2006 at 11:58 pmGood posts all, spent the evening listening to the senators questening the guy’s about the port deal. Interesting, and eye opening. One big point made painfuly clear was the ones answering all the questions were died in the wool followers and none of them had been in on the passing of this nightmare. Their underlings were the one’s that passed this mess. Yep! all the poor bottom feeders in their respective groups put it together and passed it off. Ya Know like the last secretary in the pool in cubical 12 that no one knows….Geeeeeeees…….Blessings
March 2nd, 2006 at 12:06 amThere are lots of smoking gun documents on the dirty deal to turn over our East Coast ports to a UAE owned corporation, but the Congress and the press have to demand to see them! As long as they cower in fear of the Bush Regime, WE the people will be kept in the dark, and subjected to tyranny and dictatorship!
March 2nd, 2006 at 12:07 amhad to forward this to Lou Dobbs, he is currently on the warpath on this issue, regardless of his other dumb ideas.
March 2nd, 2006 at 1:14 amThe main stream press is part of the problem. Being owned and operated by wealthy Republicans (not all, but most) the ‘press’ has become a mouth piece for the Neo Power Groups that contribute to the Republican Party. Does anyone out there believe they are getting unbiased news from FOX, The NY Times, The Wall Street Journal, The Washington Post, etc. etc. etc.? The right wing press has even gone as far as to try to convince us that there is a strong liberal bias in the media.
March 2nd, 2006 at 1:22 amThe main stream press no longer has investigative reporting, they have become the voice of Republican spin. Where are the likes of reporters like Walter Cronkite, who in his time was considered to be the most respected and trustworthy news person in the country? Now we have Rush, O’Reilly, Mathews, and other conservative hate mongers on the air, and a White House Press Corps that pretends to ask important questions when in fact most are asking regurgitated questions which Bush has heard before and has his memorized spin answers for. It’s a well documented fact that the broadcasters on FOX are told exactly how to spin the ‘news’ to make it look favorable for Bush and the Republican Party… and that is true of the main stream print media too. That is why Bush has allowed the main stream media to be completely owned by a half dozen magnates loyal to the Republican Party. The days of an independent media are long gone.

March 2nd, 2006 at 1:30 am97 - do you come here to rant often? we hear you, we know, sit down again and relax.
March 2nd, 2006 at 5:08 amIsn’t Everybody Sick & Tired of the 911 Conspiracy Freaks?
Is it me? Or are these 911 Conspiracy Freaks becoming intolerable and, might I say, quite dangerous? Somebody please put an end to their wild conspiracy theory. It’s been nearly five years since the deaths of thousands of innocent citizens; hard working citizens with families and friends who’ve had their hearts torn apart by the events of 911. Out of respect for the victims and for the safety of our nation’s future, I urge all of us to move forward from the rants of the tin-foil hat brigade. It’s a tough challenge. They are a unified group sticking to their insane and impossible story like the glue under their nose which they’re probably sniffing. Okay, I understand what a conspiracy is, two or more people planning a subversive act; and we have conspiracy laws on the books because they actually do happen all the time. Yeah, but these 911 freaks want all of us to choose their conspiracy theory over another one.
Here are the two top conspiracy theories; I’ll leave it up to all of you rational minded individuals to make a decision. Either you join the ranks of the freaks or you join the normal world of intelligence.
Conspiracy Theory #1 – On 911, nineteen disgruntled goat herders from the other side of the world hidden in a dark cave plan and then orchestrates the most devastating attack upon the most highly budgeted and dominating, impenetrable defense system the world has ever known, and succeeds with hardly any money and armed only with razor blades; thus forcing that nation to alter its way of life more so than from its previous World Wars and major military conflicts. In effect, goat herders with razor blades were mightier than all enemies combined from WWI; WWII; Korean War; Vietnam War; etc…
OR
Conspiracy Theory #2 – Some of the world’s richest and most powerful individuals with vast resources, top notch organizational abilities, direct access to US military apparatus and the most experienced and notorious clandestine operation units on the planet decide to implement the 911 attack to stir up necessary support from the American people in order to invade Middle Eastern countries and move closer to their goal of absolute control of oil markets, creating record shattering profits, establishing a long standing intimidation stance in the region (permanent US military bases in the region) and protection of oil resources and long term profits. Corporate hegemony or better known as Benito Mussolini put it, fascism.
The 911 Truth Movement is alive and growing fast. For those not in the know yet, come back to reality and join the hundreds of thousands of concerned citizens who desire justice and a safer future for our children. Get informed with the facts. Freedomtown is a great place to start. Check it out, and then ask yourself, in light of all the information, what really happened on 911? Are you interested in finding out more? The most accessible and rational voice in the 911 Truth Movement is David Ray Griffin. His books are highly recommended; The New Pearl Harbor; and The 911 Commission Report, Omissions and Distortions.
(By no means am I insinuating that goat herders as a whole are an evil bunch.)
March 2nd, 2006 at 5:24 am[…] Via Think Progress: New evidence has emerged that key agencies of the United Arab Emirates may have been infiltrated by al-Qaeda. March 2nd, 2006 at 8:21 am#64 - Spudge_Boy, don’t forget that Afghanistan has returned to heroin production since we overthrew the Taliban and haven’t supported a successful government in that country.
http://www.dpna.org/drugnews/01-05-5.htm
And before the trolls can complain about the source of the news coming from that country, here’s one that you’ll love!
http://www.washtimes.com/ national/ 20030811-100220-8928r.htm
“An abrupt decline of illicit opium-poppy cultivation was recorded in Afghanistan in 2001, after a ban imposed by the Taliban regime in its last year in power. Despite the accumulation of significant stocks of opiates during previous years of bumper harvests, the latest U.N. report noted that the beginnings of a heroin shortage became apparent on some European markets by the end of 2001.
“The absence of the usual harvest in Afghanistan in spring 2001 and the subsequent depletion of stocks pushed opium prices upwards to unprecedented levels in the country,” the report stated. “The power vacuum in Kabul caused by the aftermath of 11 September 2001 enabled farmers to replant opium poppy.
“By the time the Afghan interim administration was established and issued a strong ban on opium poppy cultivation, processing, trafficking and consumption, most opium poppy fields had already started to sprout,” the report said.
Both U.N. and U.S. authorities have said that despite government assurances that poppy fields were being destroyed, few fields were eradicated.”
So, now it seems that America is complicit in the re-introduction of heroin as an export crop from a country that we “liberated”. Way to go, USA!
March 2nd, 2006 at 8:22 am#94,i’m not a conspiracy theorist, however an awful lot of the explanations put forth by our criminal regime just don’t add up.Why did they ignore warnings in pdb that stated “Al queada determined to strike inside us”,why was there no criminal investigation, why did they let bin ladens family members go home when standard procedure dictates you interrogate family members first. If you believe what you hear from these idiots in Washington, you’ve been under a rock since 2001.
March 2nd, 2006 at 9:27 amAl-Qaeda couldn’t possibly have ulterior motives!
March 2nd, 2006 at 9:59 amI think the Bush administration is compartmentalizing the imminent destruction of New York City and planning to use the UAE as plausible denial cover story.
After NYC is to be destroyed in a massive terrorist action, such as a shipped nuclear weapon to the port, the Adminstration will issue a Code Red Terror Threat Level and implement Martial Law, taking over the United States and giving their shadow government free reign over policy for plunder and further destruction and mass murder.
My rant on this is here.
March 2nd, 2006 at 10:47 am#100-
So you believe that the federal government is going to demolish a major economic center, paralyzing its economy and causing worldwide economic shock, so it can make money? Where do I sign up for your newsletter?
March 2nd, 2006 at 10:53 amNo, Mr. Big Muscles (#101), I believe that a rogue part of the Bush regime could be allowing others to destroy NYC in such a way that these rogues’ fingerprints would not be on the bomb/ing. Unfortunately, the rogues in the regime may happen to include Bush, Cheney, and Rumsfeld.
As I state in my blog, what these rogues probably see as valuable in NYC is data and gold, both of which are recoverable.
New Orleans was a major economic center, and we’ve lost that! Their democratic voters are scattered to the winds, never to be a factor in the Electoral College again. The economic power of New Orleans has relocated to Republican Baton Rouge and Houston. The AP just reported that Bush was warned by Brownie that the levees were in danger. Bush then lulled local officials stating that everything was under control by the Feds.
It could be gross negligence, but it seems to work out quite well for the Bush regime and its backers.
March 2nd, 2006 at 11:21 amRAZZLE DAZZLE BUSH AND GANG OF CRONIES SPEW OUT SO MUCH CORRUPTION DAILY AMERICAN PEOPLE ARE LEFT IN A FOG ATTEMPTING TO DECIPHER THE LIES AND DECIET SPEWED FORTH.YOU COULD NOT BELIEVE ANYTHING KING GEORGE SAYS EVEN ON DEATH BED COVERED WITH BIBLES UP TO HIS NECK.SO HELL NO TO THE TAKE OVER OF U. 2002 Letter Shows Al-Qaeda Infiltrated UAE Government…
March 2nd, 2006 at 12:16 pmTo #101:
We watched exactly that “Let It Happen On Purpose” in New Orleans, mostly to “save money” for Iraq budgets in the short term. Then paying dividends by turning Louisiana “Red” by displacing its black/Democrat population. Then raking in billions for housing and other contractors, while further propping up the housing market despite its actual collapse.
Brownie, is that you? Heckuva job with your coincidence theory.
March 2nd, 2006 at 12:46 pmIsn’t Everybody Sick & Tired of the 911 Conspiracy Freaks?
Comment by Greenback — March 2, 2006 @ 5:24 am
I’m tired of a lot of things. Unfounded conspiracy is one of them. Another is hypocrisy of people who complain that Bush is violating our Constitutional Rights, and then insist that Judd ban certain Right-wing posters in violation of free speech. And another is the willingness of some co-called liberals to monger hatred.
There are several of you here that I like immensely, while there are others who are simply leftwing versions of the rightwing ideologues they claim to detest. It’s no wonder the rest of the world thinks we are a bunch of whiners with itchy trigger fingers.
I’ve been hanging out here, almost daily, since October, and I think it’s time for me to take a break or go try another forum for a while. Not that I expect things to be any different anywhere else, but I just can’t listen to certain people bash Bush in one breath while behaving in exactly in the same manner in the next.
I’m sure I’ll be stoned for my thoughts. I’ve come to learn that this is the American way.
March 2nd, 2006 at 12:46 pmThis source of the immediate problem is, of course, the current administration and its Republican rubber stampers. But I think that it should be pointed out that the problems besetting our country are due in large part to the free-traders-at-any-cost. Raw Story had a link to an article in FT.COM that I can no longer find. Here is the direct link to the article:
http://news.ft.com/ cms/ s/ 60414c4c-a95e-11da-a64b-0000779e2340.html
It reveals that:
Interesting that Clinton accepted $300,000 in the same year that this letter was written. We need to free ourselves of the Bushes and the Clintons and anyone else who proposes to sell what is left of our country to the highest bidders.
March 2nd, 2006 at 12:57 pmIsn’t anybody here just a TAD skeptical about the veracity of a letter from Al-Qaeda? Or are y’all convinced it’s accurate?
March 2nd, 2006 at 1:51 pm110 - I pointed this out a few comments ago, to the sound of crickets.
March 2nd, 2006 at 2:28 pm111 - mrbigmuscles:
So you did. I skimmed this thread but missed yours. The crickets are still deafening.
March 2nd, 2006 at 3:19 pmLet’s visualize democrats capturing the House of Representatives in ‘06, and an impeachment and conviction in ‘07. Impeach Bush (and disarm Cheney).
March 2nd, 2006 at 3:54 pmand let’s not forget, plan B is always “Blame Clinton”
March 2nd, 2006 at 3:56 pmWhat can the average American citizen do to stop this insanity?Earlier post(s) suggested a nation-wide strike….a GREAT IDEA!!! However,I feel our population has been for the most part dumbed-down to the point that we care more about celebrities, powerball tickets, the latest trading housewives episode, etc. I got rid of my cable tv service 6 months ago since only a handfull of channels were worth watching.Guess what??? I do not miss it in the least!!!I learn much more from the internet!!!
However,I fear that the average American just does not give a shit anymore for a variety of reasons, some of which I listed above. This nation is severely divided politically and the brainwashing by Rush and Anne is only gasoline on the fire to destroy our own right to form an honest opinion.
Today,I have a sick feeling in the pit of my stomach thinking about the problems this great nation faces and how it currently hides, lies, twists the truths and misinforms it’s citizens. Is it time to move to New Zealand or something?? Or, should we stand up and dig in our heels and howl at the moon for justice and equality.Be rid of these corporate puppets who govern us and BETRAY us every step of the way.
The time has come to think America.Hope suvivor-man croaks while sharing his food with a Grizzly and they replace the programming with food for thought…YOU ARE NEVER TO OLD TO LEARN!!!

March 2nd, 2006 at 5:53 pmre #110 and #111: U.A.E.’s leaders are friends, associates and business partners of UBL. The reason the CIA didn’t assassinate UBL in the late 1990s was because the emir of UAE was hunting with Osama and they didn’t want to kill him. The US tipped of UAE about wanting to kill UBL, and then they tipped off Al Quaida and then they hunting camp was dismantled.
The 9/11 commission linked UAE leaders and banking with Al Quaida.
Also the US Coast Guard recently warned the Presidential Commission that UAE was not trustworthy.
So… don’t take Al Quaida’s word for it. Take Americans’ word for it.
March 2nd, 2006 at 6:25 pmTnose would make a much better thread than the letter from Al Qaeda. This just sounds like, “see, Al Qaeda said this so it’s true!” I’m worried about the people in this thread who just jumped on.

March 3rd, 2006 at 12:09 amWhat if John Kerry said in the 2004 election that he had a plan to protect our ports that involved an Arab corporation?
As it turns out, the admin claims they didn’t find out about it till after the deal went thru! STINKS!
115: Your right. People aren’t paying attention. And the admin likes it.
March 3rd, 2006 at 1:48 amOh! Gotta go. I think American Idol is starting!
I have never seen or read a bunch of fear mongering in my life? Question does anyone here even know what a terminal is? Go in an airport and see where all the planes line up… Each one is rented leased space by that airline how many are owned by foriegn companies and how many of those are owned and or operated by that country… I think we must look at all letters from all countries to see if any might have dealings with any arab county who has dealing with any terrorist organization. France and the PLO get France Air out of airports they are more difficult to guard than ships. I believe everything I hear and read 115… ya right… but I listen to it all and a letter written by an organization that does nothing but lie and misinform on purpose I would want someone to check it out first before I would believe either side in saying it is the God’s honest truth. I know people from Michigan that are still allowed to rent Rider Truck in Oklahoma, oh my goodness they are farmers who know about nitrates. Quit the fear mongering and get the facts. Oh I know blogs have all the facts correct… what about the one that blames Bush and Cheney for bird flu. If they have not yet been blamed I am sure some one will soon. Find something worthy to bash them on get off all the tangents that the public, including me are really getting tired of. The truth will set you free only if it the real truth if not we will just stay where we are with no ideas and just far fetched complains someone thinks they have right and the line is thinks thay have right. We are smarter than the average dem blogger.
March 3rd, 2006 at 4:09 pmtom - “I have never seen or read a bunch of fear mongering in my life?”
is that a statement or a question - the phrasing is wrong for either choice…
“The truth will set you free only if it the real truth…” puncuation would be good here…
but, just out of curiosity: list some of the sites you recommend for “real truth”
March 3rd, 2006 at 7:26 pmplease…
Thanks #29 for that link. I simply love this little piece:
MR. RUSSERT: The Washington Post asked the American people about Saddam Hussein, and this is what they said: 69 percent said he was involved in the September 11 attacks. Are you surprised by that?
VICE PRES. CHENEY: No. I think it’s not surprising that people make that connection.
MR. RUSSERT: But is there a connection?
VICE PRES. CHENEY: We don’t know.
Of course he wasn’t surprised. He worked hard at soldering that connection.
March 4th, 2006 at 8:57 amI think we are in big touble. Know one care about our poeple how work hard to build amercia and suffer in lou, and can’t
March 5th, 2006 at 10:31 pmWake America, look all round us and what do you see the president try to blame every on Mayor Clinto, when she tell like it is. But this is a so possble be a god fear county, and our president is leting money lend this county to destory. God Help us all

March 14th, 2006 at 2:19 pmwill ive been eading all ure comments, and all lead to the same conclusion a distrust in the us government not the united arab emirates, first of all have any of the people who wrote all this stuff ever been to the uae. im a current resident there, and allot of american europeans happen to reside in the uae, the uae is a multi cultural enviroment whose leaders try hard to advance the country in every way possible come visit dubai or abudhabi, dubai has the largest tower in the worl being constructed in and u have fears of security issues.
of all the countries in the mid east the uae’s name has never been brought up once as a trouble some country and to remind the american people that by the act of refusing the p&o deal allot of the investors not only in the uae but also in the whole arab world would rethink twice before even thinking of investing in the u.s.
second how can u call ure self a democratic country and yet block this deal by doin so ure showin that u r a racisit country mascerading under this democracy blanket.
as for me as an investor, i would never run the risk of acctually investing in the us wether its for bssiness or property after the act commited by the us nation against dubai, and this also i sound from me and allot of my investor freinds allocated in different parts of the arab word, how could there be free trade with a country that canot show trust towards the countries participatin in this globalization act, so its ok if us war ships dock in our harbors, and be maintained by arab cews but it ain ok for these crews to operate in the us!!!!!!!!!
