James Dobson gets letters.

“This is just a short note to express my heartfelt thanks to you and the entire staff of Focus on the Family for your help and support during the past few challenging months. I would also greatly appreciate it if you would convey my appreciation to the good people from all parts of the country who wrote to tell me that they were praying for me and for my family during this period.” — Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito

    impeach the bastard.

  2. ElectricBassPlayer says:

Thanks for posting. I just donated to Americans United.

I’ll be damned if I let my country turn into a Christian Iran.

  3. Howdy Neighbor says:

Good Lord Mr. Justice sir, do I hear the notes of
martyrdom and poor me in your writings?
    (Mercy? Me?)

  4. Howdy Neighbor says:

Blatant cultivation and cozying as well. Cheney and Scalito at least kept it in the duck blind where they could fire off a round or two when they got to any sensitive issues…

  5. mmmm ... sultry says:

… “and, as an expression of my heartfelt thanks, I will sacrifice women’s rights during my tenure in the Court.”

  6. Victor says:

used appreciation twice in the same line.

  7. Mary Poppin says:

Well we know who’s pocket Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito
is in? The Right Wing Religious nuts.

  8. Jesus Christ God of WAR says:

I’d say “I told you so”. But who’s listening? Certainly no one who cares about the US, the Constitution, or the health and well-being of the republic. :(

When will people rise up against this political insanity and corporate greed???

  9. Morgan says:

    Ayatollah Alito. We’re so fucked.

  10. mr ho says:

Sen. Hillary Clinton advised the leadership to consider “holding their fire” for a fight they could win, and her colleagues agreed that this could be a prudent course to take. “We may hold our fire for some other fight we can lose,” said Chuck Schumer.

  11. wisedup says:

wow…sams so IMPARTIAL, middle of the road, ALL of Americas interests. I be he insists on sitting on the right side of the court seating. Ms.Alito cryed, and now, we do.

  12. Jesus Christ God of WAR says:

I hope all those fundy-christians are happy now! They certainly can’t complain about the court being “liberal” any longer.

Too they just turned this place over to the Amerikan Talaban.

Though Whacko-Christofascist Nation is another phrase that comes to mind.

  13. Zimzone says:

I inadvertantly came across Jerry Falwell’s ’sermon’ one Sunday morning. He was lamenting the fact that vicious liberals had made Ms. Alito cry…something like, ‘when Ted Kennedy asked this wonderful, humble man if he was a closet bigot, Ms. Alito’s pretty little chin began to quiver and, of course, she had to leave.’
    Folks, this was a sermon!
    America, this was a church!
Lies? Innuendo? All of the above?
Unless I missed something in Sammy’s hearings, it was Lindsay Graham, Bush’s South Carolina water boy that asked that question.
Will Falwell be questined on this? Of course not.
Was it the truth? Of course not.
So…not only have we allowed churches to become political podums, they can now lie about the obvious, all in the name of Jesus Christ.
Let’s all help the IRS in pursuit of fake non-profits status…arrest JERRY FALWELL!!

  14. fnordboy says:

Oh, we’re all so screwed. Welcome to the Apocalyptic Theocracy of America – anyone else want to leave with me? Listen: there’s a hell of a good universe next door; let’s go.

  15. Howdy Neighbor says:

Perhaps these sheepherders are feeling abandoned by the good christian king george, as he seems to have dropped the higher father in favor of hired fodder.
As they believe and practice constant judgement, do they see the Judicial Branch as a new route to salvation?

  16. mr ho says:

A Judge with Political/Religious Debt to those whom he owes his Court position, paid back with favorable Decisions.

Very Much like a Corrupted Senator.
Have the Courts become as Corrupt as the Senate and the Lobbyists?
    United States for Sale!

Want a Law for your Business?
    Destroy the Checks and balances?
    Just PAY THEM!
Want to make others follow your very narrow view?
    Just BUY IT!
    Want to legsilate Morals?
pay an Immoral Person to legislate morals!

Say, isn’t it immoral to pay an Immoral person money to do something, making that immoral in itself?

  17. TerrytheTurtle says:

    /sarcasm on

Look on the bright side, the US has so much more in common with Iran these days… this common ground on women, gays, human rights could really be the start of a detente between the two theocracies.

  18. mr ho says:

Yeh that Pat Roberston he has morals err money allright.
I guess its those same morals that made him use donations for Mining equipment instead of paying off Gubberment officials

  19. Granite State Destroyer says:

Ladies, please place your ovaries in the collection basket.

    -Talibangelical Minister

  20. Hardy Haberman says:

For Dobson the only morality occurs between your belt and knees. Graft, theft, corruption, pandering, it’s all OK with him, unless it has to do with sex.

  21. Howdy Neighbor says:

    /sardony on
The two theocracies can go hand in hand, they have the common ground of both being extreme views. Unfortunately neither has evolved past the playground bullying stage of “My god is bigger than your god and will beat (it) up..”

  22. Kurt says:

So where is the surprise? Anybody with a brain in his/her head knew this before the first question was asked in the judiciary committee. All together now, sing Halleluja, we have seen the light.

My new national anthem is going to be “Oh, Canada”.

  23. blindprogressive says:

This is a stupid posting. This is why Democrats are getting their butts handed to them by the religious voters. What is the purpose of the post? To show that Justice Alito was supported by religious conservatives? It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure that out. I’ve read some anti-religious postings in the comments so far, why don’t you guys go dance on MLK’s grave while your at it.

I almost always gain good insight from thinkprogress, but this! post is totally ignorant. TELL ME SOMETHING I DON’T KNOW!!

  24. DWG says:

Nothing Dobson says or does is consistent with the teachings of Jesus. Gag. His focus is on wealth and power, not families or faith.

  25. Jack says:

Scary, how close the United States is to becoming a theocracy, and what is worse, these guys are hypocrites using the Lord for their own glory and power. They only want to control people and they are using religion to do it. Shame on them. I pray that our country can make it through these times, and these folks will get their comeuppance.

    Is Hell exothermic or endothermic?

  26. ic says:

    Surprise!… Not.

  27. Samuel Alito says:

OH YES people. Your worst nightmare has come true. The bells of changing are rining right in your face. After President Bush appoints Ginsburg and Stevens’ replacement, a conservative majority will sweep the nation and send liberals into total hysteria.

Alito is JUST the beginning. Florida Supreme Court Justice Jose Cantero will be next and then Janice Rogers Brown will be swapped in for Ginsburg. Not a good time to be a liberal. Finally, you will pay for your crimes against democracy.

  28. Clif says:

Sammy’s bin drink out of the big bowl in the bathroom again, please for give him.

  29. Samuel Alito says:

Kurt – go, leave. GTFO! You liberals and your incessant whining won’t be missed. In Canada, you can pay 15% sales tax. You’ll fit in fine. Meanwhile, the conservative revolution will thrive without anti-democracy scum like yourself.

  30. Samuel Alito says:

Clif – poor thing. On one hand, you asswipes make a stink about a little note that Alito writes. ON the other, you don’t really beleive the Court will shift dramatically to the right. So what is it?

  31. snookered says:

Hey Morgan, you sure got it right…..2nd sentence especially! I used to call Ashcroft the Ayatollah, he was off the deep end.

  32. Clif says:

Touchy for a judge, what do you judge, porcelain drinking contests?

  33. Plaintiff says:

Goodness Sam, the universe sure handed you a ripe one this afternoon!
And all you expected when you got home from duty on the bench was to have to wash the pigeon poop out of your hair.
If you put up your hood tomorrow, might give you more time time to wash the white out of your robe.

  34. Sister Boogie Woman says:

Two words: Alito can go f**k himself, that mother f**ker.

  35. AvengingAngel says:

Dobson of course supports The Judicial Dress Code Act:

Judges approved by the Federalist Society will wear white robes – and hoods.

  36. Wayne A. Schneider says:

If James Dobson ever has a case go all the way to the Supreme Court, I wonder if Justice Alito will recuse himself? I know that the recusal decision is an individual justice’s to make, but the conservatives on the Court (and in Congress, and in the White House) do not seem to understand what “avoiding the appearance of a conflict of interest” means. They like to say “I can be impartial”, but they always seem to do what people said they might do. Justice Scalia refused to recuse himself in the case involving Vice President Cheney (who once shot a 78-year-old man in the face), and then voted in Mr. Cheney’s favor.

  37. big papa says:

Right wing, anti-Christian, al Crackker Bushite inbreds…

…America’s TRAITORS in the church house…

James Dobson, Robertson, Falwell et al…

…send ‘em to hell where they belong…

  38. bush hater says:

Dobson, Robertson, Falwell, Bush: FASCISTS IN CHRISTIAN CLOTHING!!!

  39. mrbigmuscles says:

I don’t see what the big deal is. The Supreme Court is a political institution with political appointees. The judge is not voted in there, but there is still a campaign of sorts. How is thanking your campaign backers inappropriate or even unexpected? This is blown way out of proportion.

  40. Marie says:

Gasp!! But Sam Alito is supposed to be so middle of the road — how did this happen?
And what about removing tax-exempt status from religious organizations?
    Hypocrites, hypocrites everywhere are hypocrites.

  41. mighty aphrodite says:

Let’s make a deal. Let’s revoke the tax exempt status of all churches, synagogues, mosques….ACLU, NAACP, People for the (Un)american Way, Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts, American Lung Association, AMA, American Cancer Society – EVERY PAC, special interest, and NON-profit. There, that should take care of a few of the whiners…for two or three seconds.

  42. Sister Boogie Woman says:

#39, MrTINYmuscle — think with your head and not with your gerkin, the “big deal” is conflict of interest; the “big deal” is a justice who acts with partiality and not impartiality; the “big deal” is a justice who votes rather than as the law dictates but as the religious right dictates. THAT’S the big deal, idiot.

  43. Sister Boogie Woman says:

For once Mighty-A says something I agree with. Here here!

  44. Sincere Thanks says:

After reading these comments I have to express my “Thanks” to you all for affirming my support of the work “Focus on the Family” is doing!

  45. mrbigmuscles says:

    #42-

Your comment essentially translates to: “I don’t understand how the Supreme Court really works, and didn’t bother to look up the context surrounding Alito’s letter.”

He was responding to a congratulatory letter from Dobson and friends. What do you think he was going to write, “thanks for the support but go screw yourself?!”

One of us posted a shrill, hysterical, knee-jerk response without bothering to do even a minimal amount of research. The other actually bothered to inform themselves before posting. So which one is the idiot?

  46. Clif says:

#45 Stupid is as stupid does, and saying it in your moniker smacks the same insecurity that Alito was pushed to the court, a large segment of the American population lives in fear because they are told to and then make any move that they are told to alleviate the same fear, but funny the fear mongers do not stop in fact the fear shrill increases each year…

  47. mrbigmuscles says:

    # 46

Wow. Just amazing. You are totally right! My chosen nickname for posting comments on TP reflects deep, personal secrets which I am ashamed to otherwise reveal! Like the fact that I’m stupid!

What exactly is “the same insecurity that Alito was pushed to the court”? So you can’t form a coherent sentence, and I’m the stupid one? Man, you can’t beat intellectual discourse on this level! Oh wait, unless I go start an argument with the Freepers.

Can you explain how anything in your comment has anything to do with the Alito letter? Or anything to do with the comment you actually replied to? Or the fact that you interpret screennames to be literal translations of their owner’s personal characteristics? Probably none of the above, because like SBW, your post was nothing more than some garbled gibbeish about fear and Alito and OH NOES ALITO WROTE A THANK YOU NOTE THE US IS A THEOKRICY!!!11

The hilarious part of all this is that I disagree with Alito, his nomination, and pretty much everything the Bush admin has done. Oh well!

  48. Chesterfield Cattle says:

Thanks be to God for a man who can stand-up for what he believes in! Praise God!

  49. Andrew Longman says:

A judge goes through a bruising American nomination process, then sends a thank you note to organization that actively helped and encouraged him. Uh, so what? Have any of you bothered to think that Ruth Ginsburg probably sent thank you notes to her supporters following her cake-walk confirmation? Is it beyond the ken to understand that sending a thank-you note to people who support you is common decency? Yet, something else is betrayed here. You show clearly that you think showing any kindness to James Dobson is wrong simply because James Dobson’s opinions and positions are, to most of you-all, practically illegal. You think it implies some form of breach of impartiality on Alito’s part for even sending a thank you note to someone so illegal as Dobson. Amazing! Dobson’s speech has been so criminalized in your minds that a judge can’t even be polite to him! If Hilly Clinton got put on the court and sent a thank you note to moveon.org for their support, would you excorciate her for the same evil? I think that might not be progress. Nor is it with Alito & Dobson.
