Careless In Crawford: Catastrophes Gather While Bush Vacations»

A recently-released videotape shows Bush failed to respond to urgent warnings about Hurricane Katrina. The Washington Post describes the scene: “Bush was dialed into the conference Sunday at noon Eastern time from a meeting room at his ranch in Crawford.“

crawford

Though President Bush has famously spent a great deal of his presidency vacationing at his ranch in Crawford, the White House has always maintained that he is not distracted when he is down there.

MCCLELLAN: I don’t think the president of the United States ever gets a break. … I mean, it’s always been an opportunity for him to go home and spend some time at home. But it’s also a time when he continues to focus on the important priorities of the American people, when he continues to focus on fulfilling his responsibilities. [Press Briefing, 8/1/03]

Bush was warned about two of the most important, and catastrophic, events in his presidency — 9/11 and Katrina — while he vacationed in Crawford. And a comparison of the two events shows a disturbingly familiar pattern of Bush being distracted from his duty to protect the American people.

Bush Is Warned

9/11: “Bush told of threat before September 11″

KATRINA: “Video Shows Bush Being Warned on Katrina”

Bush Fails To Respond

9/11: “[T]he president had received an intelligence briefing — the contents of which were declassified by the White House Saturday night — warning ‘Bin Ladin Determined To Strike in US.’ But Bush seemed carefree as he spoke about the books he was reading, the work he was doing on his nearby ranch, his love of hot-weather jogging, his golf game and his 55th birthday.”

KATRINA: “Bush did not ask a single question during the final briefing before Katrina struck on Aug. 29, but he assured state officials: ‘We are fully prepared.’”

After Catastrophe Occurs, White House Covers Up What It Knew

9/11: “I don’t think anybody could have predicted that they would try to use an airplane as a missile, a hijacked airplane as a missile,” said national security adviser Condoleeza Rice on May 16, 2002.

KATRINA: “I don’t think anybody anticipated the breach of the levees.”

Truth Is Revealed

9/11: “Bin Laden Determined To Strike in U.S.”

I don’t find it strange that Bush has purposely stayed away from his cowless “ranch” in Crawford, what with his crappy ratings going down the toilet.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but everytime he goes to Texas either we have a disaster: 9-11, a devistating hurricane, or such. I mean, next time he goes to down to Texas, I think I’ll go on vacation out of the country—just to be on the safe side.

Faiz et al would only be impressed if GWB grabbed those planes out of the sky on 9/11. Of course, choosing not to use his superhero hands of steel is what designates him a schmuck. To add insult to injury he refused to calm the winds and seas BEFORE Katrina hit. And d*mn*t, Mayor Ray was willing to strand elderly citizens and abandon the stupid - GWB should have commandeered those acres of school buses…..

  13. James Says:

I believe the news reports are stating that he did not participate in the next day’s briefing. Yah, wonder if he was too busy cutting brush, driving his truck, or getting wasted?

When he’s down there in Crawford the point *is* to get away from dealing with the full affairs of state. It’s a vactation.

He also took a lovely vacation prior to 9/11…

Oh, ‘why Bush would really rather not be in the meeting room’. It’s not a ‘meeting room’. It’s a secure, windowless room. that means no outside sounds and no natural light. Would you want to sit in a cell like room during your vacation? Granted, I’m sure it’s a rather nice cell with loads of goodies.

AP sat on the video, so I wouldn’t say they ‘caught him a lie’ like the header says - they disclosed the lie that they had caught six months earlier.

This is similar to the warrantless spying when the times sat on it for a year - part of which was during a presidential election.

It’s all about access - the media is frightened of losing their pathetic ‘interviews’ with the ‘key’ politicians. They don’t want to be shut out. So they do censor themselves and quite effectively.

This is a shared pool feed, right? Or was it just the AP? Either way, it’s pathetic.

Mighty Aphrodite, just how far will you bend over to keep kissing Bush’s @ss? I mean, you guys cranked up the noise machine non-stop for years because of Clinton’s BJ (wow, that was certainly a threat to this nation!) but Bush craps out catastrophe after catastrophe and you continue to cover for his miserable failures.

  19. Spudge_Boy Says:

I believe the news reports are stating that he did not participate in the next day’s briefing.

Then that would be a lie. The Associate Press’ video is from August 25 through August 31.

  20. Democrat Soldier Says:

#12 - Bush didn’t ask a single question during the final government-wide briefing the day before Katrina struck on Aug. 29 but assured soon-to-be-battered state officials: “We are fully prepared.”

Looks to me like Pres. Bush only uses his super-powers to not ask questions about how un-prepared his resources are, and to side-step responsibility after his response is proven to be such a failure. Wow! If only Pres. Clinton had known how easy it is to pull the wool over the eyes of the “partisan brain” Republicans and you never would have been interested in impeaching him for having sex!

  21. Impeach Justices Who Ignore Privacy Says:

    mighty aphrodite,

Does it not bother you that Bush uses Israeli flags and gay porn to torture Muslims? Don’t you find it inflammatory and potentially dangerous to Israel?

  22. James Says:

    #12
Bush controls resources far greater than the mayor of New Orleans. Said mayor does not have dedicated teams of meterologists who also are experts with regard to levees/dams/sea walls/piers/etc since they aren’t your ‘9 at 5′ weather guys. FEMA is supposed to advise the localities of what they are going to face. If something went out from that weather forecaster (who should be ashamed in that he did not publicly disclose their predictions on the levees) many more people would have evacuated regardless of what the feds or the state or the city did. People don’t like the idea of a flood.

The federal government has the most blame because it has the most resources. Next comes the state and then the mayor. It’s an information issue and that information is the feds job.

FEMA is, I believe, sort of a problem in that people have relied on it, because it has been effective in the past, which gives the state a reason to axe funding for their own disaster agencies. Why duplicate what the feds are already doing for you? (control, collection technical info, etc). FEMA is not effective because it is not a cabinet level agency anymore and it is stuck under Chertoff who has many many other things to worry about than some stupid hurricane.

I think Brownie came out looking a little better. He’s not an idiot like it was portrayed and he had a grasp of the issues. He wasn’t effective, but at least he wasn’t playing with his CrackBerry the whole time. Chertoff looks even worse, since he would have been the one to approve additional DHS resources, and Bush comes out as looking uninterested and desperate to get back to clearing brush.

  23. AkaDad Says:

GW Bush, is going to be known, as the worst president in American history.

  24. James Says:

I’m guessing my local paper went to press before the ‘real’ wire story came out. Checked it and it’s in there. Validates my belief that the papers are no good for breaking news - Sago miners being a really horrific example of that.

  25. Spudge_Boy Says:

Bush knew that this was going to be the worst hurricane in recorded history. He was told that by the Director of the Federal Emergency Mangement Agency and the National Hurricane Center. He assured everyone that there were personel and equipment at the ready to help. He then went and had cake with John McCain and then “played” guitar in San Diego.

When I get to Heaven, St. Peter is gonna be like, “Spudge_Boy, we have an issue. I turns out you did hate somebody during you life. Let’s take a look hear……oh, it’s George W. Bush. Go on through.”

  28. James Says:

    Spudge,
I go back on that. Bush wasn’t listening in on the Aug. 29th FEMA briefing, the day the hurricane hit.

‘Bush, who participated in the August 28 FEMA briefing, reassures officials that everything is under control…Bush did not participate in the next day’s briefing.’
    http://www.cnn.com/ 2006/ POLITICS/ 03/ 02/ fema.tapes/ index.html

Bush received two updates from Brown on the 29th, however, once on Air Force one once while he was still in Crawford.

So no, Bush was not listening in to what the actual professionals were saying and what the entire group involved in the effort was saying.

    Cake tastes good.

    Playing guitar is fun.

  32. James Says:

I would like to know why the kind folks at the National Hurricane Center could not give a weather forecast to the public that contained the information the President had - that they forecasted the levees would breach. When I say forecasted breaches I do mean probabilities, just like weather forecasts. But if you combined 1. big hurricane and 2. hey, you might get flooded as there is a 70 percent chance of massive flooding due to breaches…people would have gone. And the politicians would have done something.

There was NO talk from NHS or the NOAA etc about levee failures. They knew it was a possibility because they were aware of what those levees were built to withstand. They’re the weather experts - don’t count on your local forecasters who buy a feed from the commercial accuweather.

    #62

The most important part of that lame ass “the eye didn’t hit New Orleans” arguement is that the eye of the hurricane is where you want to be. Have you ever been in a hurricane? It comes in three parts.

First torential rains and wind going say West to East.

Second is a very calm period with light rain and wind that changes direction.

Third is more torential rians and winds going to opposite direction as the first part, going East to West.

So, this theory is completely stupid. It is the First and Thirds parts that do the damage and cause flooding. Not the eye. The eye is calm.

Have you ever heard the term:

    “The eye of the storm.”

It means you are in a calm period before you know everything is about to go to shit.

*****My mother was young when her Jewish father moved the family to the US after Austria was “occupied”. He later wrote that he knew this was no “ordinary pogrom”. After Hitler assumed the chancellorship, civil law regarding Jews changed radically. After ghettoization started, it was much harder to move about. You might want to look up the resistance of the Warsaw ghetto.

Are you back to name calling? I thought we were passed that. I guess I was wrong.

Dear Sister Mary Boogie - The KKK?? Please… you can do better than thaaat….I would NEVER join a group that hates Jews and blacks - or allows the senior Senator from West Virginia to join. But enjoy your status of elevated victimhood. You may ignore me - frankly, I don’t see what you add to the conversation, so I’ll ignore you.

To ignore someone while you tell them about it is sort of self-contradictory, about par for MA

  77. Marie Says:

Bush has never graduated from being the frat boy. He hasn’t taken his presidency seriously - just as he didn’t take his numerous businesses (all failures) seriously. He was always seeking fun with his friends of similarly low values, shirking responsibilities, assigning subordinates to do his work for him, taking credit for the work of others, refusing responsibility for his own failures, and calling on family friends to bail out his sorry ass.
He is not a reformed alcoholic — he is a dry drunk. He has always looked for the “easy” way.
The presidency is a difficult and consuming job, and he was not/is not up to the task. He was/is a loser and probably always will be one of those guys we all know, never pulling his share of the load, mooching off others.

  78. Nick Caine Says:

George W. Bush to the assembled reporters.

“I was doing some fishing with some good old folks from here in Texas, when Hurricane Katrina struck. “I caught a huge fish, an absolute whopper, it was this big.”

“Is somebody going to tell me what a heck of a fisherman I am?”

“You’re one heck of a fisherman Mr. President.”

[…] Fox can be so shameless. I know, that is repeating the obvious, but how do they say “fair and balanced” with a straight face? The home page tonight was a spinfest. First they are spinning the bush Katrina video as proof that it was the local official’s fault. Because the real story isn’t the fact that Bush went on TV and lied. […]

Let’s face it this is a rich boy that is completely in over his head. Through his whole life, whole life, he has had it fixed for him, fixed. Imagine that, everything is fixed and he still figures out a way to fuck it up. I mean how fixed can 2000 be, how fixed can the Congress be, how fixed can the media be, fixed, fixed, fixed. And he still just messes it up. No wonder his mother always wondered about George, He hobbles emotionally across our stage, and somehow we give him credit. You are witnessing a true freak of nature that has become our politic. Wealth of the second genertion, very ugly, very psychopathic.

  85. Lora Says:

    Mighty Hypocrite,

Even if Mayor Nagin and Governor Blanco are partly to blame, all evidence indicates that President Shrub was warned of the likelihood of the levees breaking but did nothing about it. Maybe he is only partly to blame in the Katrina case. But at whom do you intend to blame for Bush’s decision to ignore warnings that “Bin Ladin is determined to attack in the US” using airplanes? Really, can a title of a report get much clearer than that?

  86. richb Says:

NEW ORLEANS - NBC News has now obtained the videotape of a key private meeting between federal and state officials on Monday Aug. 29, the day Hurricane Katrina hit. Though Michael Brown has been critical of President Bush, the tape shows Brown praising the president that day, saying they’d already talked twice.

“He’s asking questions about reports of breaches,” Brown says in the video. “He’s asking about hospitals. He’s really engaged, and he’s asking a lot of really good questions.”

    mighty,
I know how it is. There are members of my family who can’t decide whom they hate more: The survivors, or the dead. You’re using the “welfare state” slant as a cover for your hatred. There is a broad spectrum of people who chose to stay behind. And it’s the srories of white people concerned for their property whom chose to stay who tend to make the news.
People stayed behind. Whether it’s because they’re stupid, mentally unfit, poor, concerned home owners, risk takers, thieves, drug dealers, pimps, whores, geriatric-Who cares? You pity or you hate from what I’ve seen. There’s no in between.
You play like a cheap fiddle, mighty.

  89. Impeach Says:

    Holocaust Jews
    Uneducated miners
    Residents of New Orleans
    Residents of Darfur

    So easy to hate.

    ****”Partly to blame”…oh, that’s too delicious….stupid…but delicious.

You ARE right about binLaden - Bush should have grounded EVERY SINGLE plane from 1/22/01 through 09/15/01. THAT might have prevented the awful catastrophe - or they might have moved to trains, or boats, or RV’s…yeah, that’s it - at..say Mt. Rushmore. BUT when you can’t blame Bush for everything - say something remarkably stupid.

Do you mean like you all the time?
And when you can’t defend Dumbya, either change the subject or the facts? The report “Bin Ladin determined to attack in the US” and the warnings (ignored, of course, by the Busheviks) from some FBI agents about the suspicious number of Arabs in flight schools came over the summer before 9/11–not around January 22. Stupid but definitely not delicious.

  94. Cyra Brown Says:

Does anyone remember that young man, 17-18, I think, who got on a bus, and went around, picking up as many people as he could, then drove them to Texas, and was turned away at the Astro Dome, because he was “not authorized” to transport evacuee’s ? And then he was even threatened with being arrested, for “stealing” the bus ? So even when they did try to save themselves, those “in charge” had their heads so firmly lodged in their rectums, that they were only capable of making a horrible situation even more so. Way to go !!
And as usual, Bush shows up, and starts writting checks with his mouth that his ass has NO intention of cashing. Like always. He IS “Cornholio”.

  95. mighty aphrodite Says:

#94 - Dear Cyra - “You’re entitled to your own opinion - but not your own set of facts,” (D. P. Moynihan, D-NY). The young man was 22, saw the buses (bright young man) broke into the shack where the keys were(brilliant young man), picked up approx 60 people (ages: infant to senior citizen) was NOT turned away from the AstroDome and was NOT threatened with arrest. Other than a few minor, diparaging details, Cyra, you did quite well. Congratulations!

  96. Lora Says:

    Mighty Hypocrite,
94 - Dear Cyra - “You’re entitled to your own opinion - but not your own set of facts,” (D. P. Moynihan, D-NY). You may be right in this case, Mighty, but I have found many cases where you use your own set of (non)facts or change the subject when you can no longer offer an excuse for the Busheviks or a dig at liberals/progressives. (Your recent attempt to blame us for your crooked ex-Congressman Randy Cunningham was particularly egregious.)
Do you have any excuse for the $300 million worth of FEMA trailers sitting unused in Hope, Arkansas rather than going to people left homeless by Katrina? Yes, I know there’s a rule about the kind of land they can be set up on, but one would think a competent government might be aware of that rule before spending all that money on the trailers and to transport them to Arkansas, or at least make an exception to the rule to help the thousands who need living accommodations.
Do you have any explanation why Dumbya, Condi, etc. ignored warnings in August 2001 about Bin Ladin’s intention to attack within the US and FBI agents’ warnings about the suspicious number of Arabs suddenly enrolling in flight schools and not wanting to learn how to land the plane–just fly it? Do you have any excuse for the fact that nearly 4 1/2 years after 9/11, the US State Dept. still has only 10 people capable of translating Arabic, and undoubtedly even a smaller number of those competent in Urdu, Farsi, Pashtu, and other languages spoken in the Muslim countries? Do you think the potential and real terrorists are communicating to each in English?

  97. Hanry Says:

The lawmakers don’t give a rats butt. As far as they’re concerned, health care couldn’t be better. But then, they ARE getting socialized, single-payer health care, unlike the rest of us.
