Roots of Iraq Civil War May Be in ‘Salvador Option’

In January 2005, Newsweek reported that the Bush Administration was considering using the “Salvador option” against insurgents in Iraq:

[T]he Pentagon is intensively debating an option that dates back to a still-secret strategy in the Reagan administration’s battle against the leftist guerrilla insurgency in El Salvador in the early 1980s. Then, faced with a losing war against Salvadoran rebels, the U.S. government funded or supported “nationalist” forces that allegedly included so-called death squads directed to hunt down and kill rebel leaders and sympathizers.

It should come as no surprise, then, that sectarian death squads tied directly to the Iraqi Interior Ministry are running rampant in Iraq. Today we learned that the head of the Baghdad morgue has fled the country in fear for his life after reporting that the units have killed more than 7,000 people since last summer. The death squads operate so openly that an American military official in Iraq said, “the amazing this is…they tell you exactly what they are going to do.”

In a desperate bid to rescue a failed policy in Iraq, the Bush administration may have given the green light to a strategy that ends any hope of national reconciliation and finally tears Iraq apart along sectarian and ethnic lines.

    Sure, Laura.

There is a vast left wing conspiracy to get your husband to do a better job.

Man, they’re grasping at straws, here, aren’t they?

First, was the Salvador Option a success? Many could argue it was when all sides were forced to negotiate the end of civil war came.

Second, do these dumb f*cks really believe that a strategy employed in Central America will translate into Arabic? There is an Arabic identity throughout the middle east, they are largely homogenous and will be even more outraged at the US for encouraging sectarian death squads.

True, Reagan (and G.H.W. Bush) was culpable in this sort of

That Cheney learned a few things along the way (except how to shoot straight) is no surprise.

Also, there’s just a lot more weapons and pre-existing militias floating around in Iraq right now compared with El Salvador. It just seems to be a very very stupid move.

Okay, I’m not a fan of Bush, but calling for his murder? Yea…. that’s extreme and stupid.

Not to mention the hypocritical nature of your post. You call for the murder of Bush and his family, then post a link to http://www.unitedforPEACE.org.

Please be careful what you say/write. You don’t help the progressive side when you call for the murder elected leaders, no matter how much of a failure you think they are.

Evil Bastard – the jounalist was trying to question the Moral issue and International Law issues – and this guy just said that there is a government of some sort there now – so they can’t be charged as “occupiers” – and well goodness knows US- and Moral issue he just “phew phewed” saying that they will do what is in their interests. “In a desperate bid to rescue a failed policy in Iraq,”

“THERE IS NO MORE IRAQ. THERE WILL BE THREE TERRITORIES.” –Henry Fkr. Kissinger, early 2004, in Saudi Arabia.

WHAT FAILED POLICY? The only way to keep four major permanent airbases after an illegal invasion to establish them is to PARTITION the country. That REAL policy is going ahead just fine.

“the Bush administration may have given the green light to a strategy that ends any hope of national reconciliation”

Partitioned territories have no ‘reconciliation.’ And WHEN BUSH PUT 1,000 SOUTH-AFRICAN DEATHSQUAD TERRORISTS INTO IRAQ, in early 2003 right after the invasion, he had already greenlighted the policy. Where were you?

Try googling ‘Francois Strydom’ and inform yourself. If you can get your head out of the hole.

“and finally tears Iraq apart along sectarian and ethnic lines.”

Oohrah. What about Shock and Awe didn’t you understand? What about burning the Koran-Torah Repository to the ground didn’t you understand? What about blowing up FALLUJAH didn’t you understand?

This is GENOCIDE, not democracy. It is violent takeover of a sovereign country.

  57. David Venhuizen says:

Whatever the truth is about this specific strategy, what is sure about the Bush mob’s war of convenience in Iraq is that it will go down in history as a monumental geopolitical blunder. Probably judged to be the worst at least since Chamberlain’s appeasement of Hilter in 1938.

  58. Brewster McCloud says:

My, my, what a “uniter not a divider” this current President and his band of corrupt criminal cronies have proven themselves to be…leaving American citizens so despondent and fearful about the loss of our own democracy’s balance of powers and basic morality, that agent provocateurs are calling for an “Ides of March” assassination march on March 15th…

Truth be told, I’m sure there are any number of good American’s out there feeling ashamed for the ill-wishes directed at the Cheney/Bush cabal that stir within their souls. Understandable? Of course! But progressive thinkers are not the cold-blooded killers so frequently found in the mix with death squad kingpins like give-me-the-gun-Cheney and Negroponte.

And while I applaud any literary/classical references being employed in “common usage,” I’m afraid the alleged lady from Texas (her locale “so on the nose” it undermines the perpetrator’s attempt to weave wit into their words) is just another flunkie working for Bill O’Really [sic] and posting on TP in order to generate a “quote” to be portrayed on one of his sick shows — as “Up North” pointed out earlier (#34).

In addition to at least a cursory awareness of Shakespeare’s work, this pretend-poster must also have a penchant for dramas on the small-screen, hence the “Miss Ellie” of Texas moniker (the matriarch of the power-mad Ewing family on “Dallas,” the primetime soap opera of some decades back).

I understand that the University of Texas in Austin is currently noted as having one of the most acclaimed creative writing curriculums in the nation — overtaking even the long-admired and prestigious writers program in Iowa…and I would recommend that “Miss Ellie” enroll immediately in the UT program; there is so much literary technique still left for them to learn before they can pat themselves on the back for their “crafty cleverness.” Your “assignment” would not have garnered you a passing grade. But keep plugging away; at least you are trying to become acquainted with creativity!

Now, about that emporer’s assassination allegory so clumsily brought to our blog: it does have a certain thread of satisfaction to consider “Julius Bush’s” reign being brought to an end at “the doorstep of the Senate”…but that will have to wait until after the mid-term elections have ushered in a Democratic majority in Congress. Once that happens, daggers will be of no consequence, as nothing will cut the “king” more deeply than the dishonor of impeachment — and his return to daily bouts of heavy drinking to try and thwart the humiliation of being no more fortunate than poor Icarus as he plunges from lofty aspiration to just another war criminal that will finally pay their price.

Sorry, everyone, to have gone on so long with this…I was enamored of my own literary prowess there for a minute… :)

I’m not sure why you would call death squads ’special ops’, but perhaps in the brain of a partisan you see these as the same thing. I bet you were for the Reagan death squads in latin america as well weren’t you? It seems to be a favorite tactic of the extreme right around the world, and pumpkin you seem pretty extreme by anyone’s measure.

But I forgive you sweetie. The rightwing always stems from the insecurity, greed, fear and hatred – in otherwords the lowest and most base of our animal instincts. When you consider the partisan brian only engages our lizard brain, it makes sense though. So that’s why we can’t really fault you for all of the evil you perpetuate.
