Today on Fox News Sunday, Weekly Standard Editor Bill Kristol said that conservatives have come to believe the Bush administration is incompetent:
BILL KRISTOL: I think it’s become in people’s minds an emblem of the administration that just isn’t as serious about the competent execution of the functions of government as it should be. And even — I’m struck talking to conservatives and Republicans — they agree with the president on basic political philosophy, the they agree with his basic policy agenda, but they are worried that they just don’t seem to be able to execute as well as they should be.
Kristol is right, and it’s a dynamic that makes policy debates almost irrelevant. Even if the administration were to stumble onto a policy that would improve things, it’s highly unlikely the people in charge would be able to execute the policy effectively.

That’s the ‘Civil War’ talking point, complete with it’s reason for existing: To keep U.S. Troops in Iraq.
And so no, that ‘Civil War’ crap from Kristol last weekend was never anything like criticism; it was only a failed ‘trial ballon’ of a talking point (which is certain to be floated again).
And as for the above item’s supposed ‘dissent’: Mr. Kristol did not use the word “incompetent” as best as I can read; he said merely that:

…and that in “talking to conservatives and Republicans — they agree with the president on basic political philosophy, and they agree with his basic policy agenda”
Two talking points: The first makes an excuse for the administration, and the second attempts to shore up the administration’s base.

9/11 wasn’t set up or planned in the Whitehouse, but it was allowed to happen. Sort of like Pearl Harbour wasn’t set up or planned in the Whitehouse but was allowed to happen. (Go look up the history.) The difference lies in the why. With Pearl Harbour, it was ultimately to correct America’s economy and get it out of the Great Depression.
With 9/11 it was either because Bush is a complete idiot, or because he knew what effect it would have on the voters. Personally, if I was an American I would see the idiocy argument as being far, far more frightening then the Bush is evil argument, evil people can change for the better, stupid people only change for the worse.
The UAE ports deal, will go through. It will be a travesty of American security, it will lead to another terrorist attack, and it may even lead to American ports being used more extensively in the transport of slaves, but it will go through.
Of course I am sure America feels slavery is okay now that this is a war situation and civilisation doesn’t actually imply civilised behaviour. Things like protecting Human Rights is for when it is easy to do, not when they need protecting. (See: Torture, Gitmo the Terrorist Farm, Iraq, The Right To Privacy etc…)
Bush stuck the to neo-con bullshit in his policy making, has done everything that the neo-cons voted for, and it has been a unmitigated distaster. I do not believe it was because he is evil, but because he is stupid, and his idealogy is basically lacking in common sense.
My take is when history looks at GW on a holistic aproach they will stick a pin in 2000 as the year when America’s empire started to end. Whether it is due to him being evil, or stupid will be up to the ego of the historians. What Bush has done in these last few terms will have lasting consequences because you will need someone who can run the country in office next, but both major parties are going to go for someone they feel can win the election. You need competent management to correct the last few years, instead you are going to get competent marketing.

While it is true that outgoing Clinton security advisor Sandy Berger warned Condi about Al Qaeda, the report titled “Bin Ladin Determined to Attack in the US” and the reports from FBI agents about the suspicious number of Arabs enrolled in US flight schools just wanting to learn how to fly–not to land came over the summer of 2001, just when Dumbya chose not to interrupt his long summer vacation. Besides, I’m sure a government truly interested in national security could have taken steps other than grounding all flights. Give up that chestnut, Mighty dear; it’s rather trite.

She vacations at Cape Cod, Puerto Rico and Florida every year for about one week (sometimes two) per slice. Whenever she arrives at a beach, she says, “Hello ocean , ****** is back.” She also does an excellent Judy Garland impersonation on her Karaoke machine.

July 19th, 2006 at 5:20 pm“Incompetent†is the word most used when increasing numbers of Americans are asked to describe President Bush. This Pew Research finding is not surprising considering Bush’s leadership failures.
He has been unable to motivate his administration or anyone else to get things done. Even when he passes off his responsibility onto others, be it business, local government or foreign lands, he fails in using the bully pulpit to inspire others to make things happen.
This failure at the helm stands in contrast to other presidents that have with few words inspired others to undertake even arduous personal tasks of minimal import to the nation. To wit, back in 1963 President John F. Kennedy jocularly suggested that his chubby press secretary, Pierre Salinger, demonstrate the physical fitness of the White House staff by walking fifty miles in twenty hours.
By Monday following JFK’s offhand remark, thousands of Americans picked up the challenge and were off and walking. When European television showed images of these marchers, a walking craze swept Europe and on as far as Japan. To this day there is an annual Kennedy March in Sittard, Netherlands.
In a more serious matter of later times, lest we forget President Ronald Reagan’s motivating words to one of this nation’s most intractable enemies: “Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall!†And he did.
Of course, those were the days of men who successfully changed the tenor of their times; in these, Bush apologists fudge the times in diminution of the man’s inadequacies.

We need not admire those that twist support for our brave troops to justify their questionable actions and judgment—particularly when what is proposed and excused mires our service men and women in a place of grave danger.
These magnificent members of our military stand and fight and do not hide behind anyone; the man that has sent them there should not try to hide behind them.
How long will George W. Bush try to conceal his misjudgment behind their valiant service? In his State of the Union, he claimed we cannot fail in Iraq. The fact is that Bush already has. His war in Iraq is a failure and the task we now face it to pick up the pieces as best we can.
The failure is not that of our troops; it is that of a man who has misused their valor, dedication to duty, and precious lives. The failure is also that of those that are still willing to tolerate his disgracefully incompetent leadership.
All distortions that attempt to mask the horror that is Iraq will not change what is obvious; we have an incredibly incompetent president backed by a straggling band of sycophants. This man can only lead sheep–may his dwindling flock of followers have a nice bah, bah, bah.
