Some 1,500 Iraqis have reportedly died in sectarian violence in the last two weeks. Iraqi insurgents continue to carry out roughly 70 attacks each day, and the number of Iraqi battalions capable of fighting without U.S. support has fallen to zero.
In other words, says Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman Gen. Peter Pace, “everything you look at” is “going very, very well”:
RUSSERT: If you were to be asked whether things in Iraq are going well or badly, what would you say? How would you answer?
PACE: I’d say they’re going well. I wouldn’t put a great big smiley face on it, but I would say they’re going very, very well from everything you look at.
The nation’s top ranking military official sounds like just another public relations mouthpeice. Maybe Pace also thinks the civil war is actually a good thing.
This is part of the latest propaganda campaign.
March 5th, 2006 at 11:18 amThis is duplicity.
This is information intended to give Americans a false sense of reality.
“We have to address the fact that the president has broken the law.†— Senator Russ Feingold
March 5th, 2006 at 11:19 amI’m watching this right now, what a joke to try to smooth over the mess in Iraq. If you remove his uniform,he looks like any other person,…thus the ‘little tin god’ statis goes away. I would love to hear his ‘personal’ opinion without the uniform.
March 5th, 2006 at 11:24 amThe Iraq War/Occupation is a FIASCO! Nothing can be done to turn this debacle into any kind of victory! The troops must be pulled out ASAP, so that NO more are killed or maimed for President Bush’s quagmire of LIES!
March 5th, 2006 at 11:24 amMurtha: “Only People Who Want Us In Iraq Are Iran And Al Qaeda…And China”…
March 5th, 2006 at 11:25 amAt minute 9 of the program Pace included “girls going to school” as one of the primary benefits to our invasion and occupation. Girls, of course, attended school under Saddam Hussein.
March 5th, 2006 at 11:28 ami could see his lips moving, but couldn’t understand a single thing he said in relation to a any question asked.
March 5th, 2006 at 11:28 am“girls going to school†is official propaganda language.
March 5th, 2006 at 11:30 amBush said it a few days ago.
So that’s what a pig with lipstick looks like. Quite a bit like a neocon in a patriotic uniform. Murderers.
March 5th, 2006 at 11:31 amsherrie c,
March 5th, 2006 at 11:32 amSame with Pat Roberts 2 weeks ago trying to defend illegal spying on Americans. There is a pattern developing.
“girls going to school†is official propaganda language.
Bush said it a few days ago.
Ah. I thought he might have been mistaking Iraq for Afghanistan. He was just lying.
March 5th, 2006 at 11:33 amWhen I was a young man, I remember how ridiculous I thought Russian Generals looked in comparison to ours because it seemed as though they thought the more ribbons they wore the more important they looked.
March 5th, 2006 at 11:34 amSince the Bushinista Regime has taken power, it seems our Generals are now following the Russian model.
They look ridiculous.
Things are going great in Iraq if you don’t count all the death, destruction, chaos, bombings, murders, torture, displacement, billions of US dollars down the drain, 2300 dead US soldiers, no WMD, thousands of maimed and emotionally destroyed troops, strife caused at home by our men and women being in harm’s way, and a bunch of other stuff.
It’s a lot like someone asking the late Jackie-O, “Other than that, how as your trip to Dallas?”
March 5th, 2006 at 11:37 amIt’s kind of silly for the People to read too much into comments on the success of the Iraq invasion and occupation made by the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Gen. Peter Pace.
It’s no where in his job description to sound off publicly any type of criticism or sour note about military operations or objectives.
For that matter, it’s not in (Defense Contractor General Electric’s employee) Tim Russert’s job description either, to sound off publicly any type of criticism or sour note about military operations or objectives
March 5th, 2006 at 11:43 amIf things are going very, very well right now in Iraq, I would hate to see what it would look like if things were going a bit poorly.
March 5th, 2006 at 11:54 amOxyConservative,
The red one in the upper right is the International Bush Ass Kissing Ribbon.
March 5th, 2006 at 11:58 amwhat do you think pace is going to say…? he is the chairman of the joint chiefs of staff, this is “wartime,” and he must support his commander-in-chief… i don’t support it, i don’t agree with it but it is reality… “reality” just the way bush likes it…
Visit my blog: And, yes, I DO take it personally
March 5th, 2006 at 12:01 pmGeneral Pace shows signs of mental illness or he has drank so much Bush Kool-Aid that it caused dementia? Only a complete FOOL could believe that the HELL in Iraq is something well or good? Pace should be court-martialed and demoted to Private and then forced to fight in the most dangerous part of Iraq!
March 5th, 2006 at 12:02 pmAnd at minute 14 of the convo, he added “Another benefit of our invasion is that people live in peace, there’s no more torture, no sect-based tyranny, lots of electricity and clean water, and the expulsion of most of the many terrorist organizations that were thriving in Iraq.”
Suddenly yet expectedly, after the interview was over, Pace’s nose grew 8 inches. And several of his medals fell off his costume.
March 5th, 2006 at 12:02 pmFinally, we have a replacement for Baghdad Bob:
March 5th, 2006 at 12:08 pm
This General is in such a fantasy land he should change his name to General Peter Pan.
-GSD
March 5th, 2006 at 12:12 pmIf this is truely the way the Military sees things, then I hope and pray they stay there for years. Letting people back into our society with this rationale can bring nothing but further decline. The longer the troops are gone the safer we will be from them.
March 5th, 2006 at 12:13 pmFvck medals and ass kissing liers .Pace what do you have to gain ? Tell it like it is general the american people is tired of your pie in the sky scenarios.Youn have sucked on the taxpayers long enough , you owe us , not this would be king president .
March 5th, 2006 at 12:13 pmHo, yeah, I changed my handle to GW Bush for a gag and forgot to return it back to GSD.
-GSD
March 5th, 2006 at 12:14 pmCongressman Murtha on CBS with Schieffer said just about the opposite of everything said by Pace. Who do you believe? I put my money on Murtha. He has done nothing but tell the American people the truth while the Administration and its puppets lie through their collective teeth. Who ever the dems elect as the next President, Murtha should be Sec. of State.
March 5th, 2006 at 12:19 pmMust continue to sell the war in Iraq!
Must continue to sell the war in Iraq!
It’s a heckuva war! A lollapalooza of war of all kinds!
Accentuate the positive!
Attenuate the negative!
The US of A will win the war in Iraq!
George Bush is the smartest man alive!
The neocons are your buddies!
Forget about how much it costs, it’s only money!
I laugh to keep from crying
It’s Sunday, that’s good
Tomorrow’s Monday, that’s bad
Breathe that rarified air in Shangrila
If you can’t say anything nice, don’t say anything at all.
The war in Iraq is GREAT!
I like the ribbons on the General’s nice uniform!
March 5th, 2006 at 12:23 pmNew thread above on Rep. Murtha everyone!
March 5th, 2006 at 12:29 pm“Things are going well in Iraq”. “We are making progress in Iraq”. “We see the light at the end of the tunnel”. We are winning the hearts and minds of the people”. This is the 2006 version of the with Gen. Pace standing in for Gen. William C. Westmoreland. Anyone else have that sense of deja vu’?
March 5th, 2006 at 12:30 pmCORRECTION TO #28. SHOULD READ: this is the 2006 version of the five o’clock follies with Gen Pace…
March 5th, 2006 at 12:32 pmNew thread on Murtha was just shut down so what gives?
March 5th, 2006 at 12:33 pmAre we watching our very own Baghdad Bob on morning TV?
March 5th, 2006 at 1:12 pmGirls attending school in Iraq is not new.
Lack of water, electricity and sewer service is new, however.
Media coverage doesn’t even cover a lot of is because they can’t leave certain zones of safety.
Yet, Bush&Co say the media coverage is biased.
How bad would it be if we saw it all?
#28 is right — we saw all this thirty years ago in Viet Nam. Same script, different readers.
The former chief kept lieing and when he left his daughter got a cushy job. Pace is doing the same thing. Lie now and rewards later. He’s disgusting……
March 5th, 2006 at 1:33 pmyet another Joint Chief of Staff describing a ‘wish list’.
That’s the problem with fascism, lies, deceit and immorality all in accordance with the neoconservative (Leo) Straussian (Plato-twisted) ‘Noble Lie’.
At least we can be comforted knowing only ~40% of America will believe everything neocons say hook, line and sinker. 60% can still win a majority.
March 5th, 2006 at 1:40 pmIf ths is what very very well looks like, what the heck would Really Bad be?
March 5th, 2006 at 1:49 pmWell, we know what the criteria is to be named JCS these days….disregard reality and buttress the Bush worldview. Sad that the position has been downgraded to a PR flak forthe WhiteHouse.
March 5th, 2006 at 1:51 pmThis is why I no longer watch Tim Russert. He only seeks the White House agenda. I was flipping through the three programs this morning (George Stephanapoulis, Tim Russert, Face the Nation). As soon as I saw it was a General on Russert’s show I knew right away it wasn’t worth watching and went on my way. I stick mostly to “This Week”, it usually has one sane person on. I’m not that happy with Face the Nation, but it’s my second choice.
March 5th, 2006 at 2:01 pmWhat do you expect him to say? He’s not going to stand up and scream “everybody to the lifeboats!” He’s point-man over there. He’s not a bad general, he’s a good military man. On the other hand, one hopes that he speaks truth to his superiors. And he should keep his mouth shut about the politics of it, McArthur learned that. That’s really about as much attention as a general should get in the media. That is, unless he DOES call for the lifeboats. McArthur taught us that too.
March 5th, 2006 at 2:42 pmWe must demand Pace’s resignation.
Any military leader so out of touch with reality is a threat to his troops.
(Of course, the same goes for Bush, too.)
March 5th, 2006 at 3:04 pmPace: ‘Everything’ In Iraq Is ‘Going Very, Very Well’ ”
“for the iranians” forgot to mention that bit Pace
March 5th, 2006 at 3:10 pmDisingenuous, perhaps…
BUT THIS HONORABLE MAN REFUSES TO PUT A GREAT BIG SMILEY FACE ON IT!!!!
The guy’s got steel grapes. He’s a regular Emile Zola, you bet. That was one helluva shot-across-the-bow of the “great big smiley face” contingent.
March 5th, 2006 at 3:25 pmCan a ‘General’ go to the brig for lieing? According to the UCMJ (Uniform Code of Millitary Justice)…they CAN.
March 5th, 2006 at 4:27 pmHow’s That Empire Goin’ Cons? Let’s see…in exchange for a couple hundred million gazillion trillion bazillion dollars and 2,700 dead American soldiers, we got some isolated piles of rocks in Afghanistan and a few bombed out sand dunes in Iraq, no oil, no peace, a divided country at home, a huge deficit, and the entire world pissed off at us.
Not exactly the grandeur that was Rome and the glory that was Greece.
**************
Hey, don’t forget all the mangoes (full of banned pesticides) we’ll be getting from India in exchange for nukes.
March 5th, 2006 at 4:27 pmA lot of people are worried about a possible civil war in Iraq. I haven’t read much, besides this site, that indicates that it IS ALREADY a civil war. Be careful about calling it prematurely. It could be construed that you’re rooting for a civil war.
March 5th, 2006 at 4:30 pmPeter Pace, like his predecessor Richard Meyers, is a Rumsfeld lap-dog. The only way you get that high in the military is by kissing lots of butt (look at Colin Powell).
March 5th, 2006 at 4:53 pmPace experienced only a few months in combat as a young platoon leader in Vietnam in 1968, prior to non-combat assignments as an infantry writer, guard detachment commander, White House social aide and ceremonial platoon leader. Most of his career has been as a swivel-chair officer in staff or management jobs when he wasn’t in school.
Pace, decoded:

March 5th, 2006 at 5:20 pm43 Before the mosque blowing up a thousand Iraq were killing each other per month in the last 2 weeks i think the total now is 1700 ok a bit higher than normal..But to me civil war is 1500 dying an hour
I think the total of 1700 in two are quite adequate for the Iranians to keep the US troops bogged down in Iraq but not enough to be a real civil war
would be good for America to have a civil war though it needs one
March 5th, 2006 at 5:22 pmHate to remind you but if you bomb Iran then your stuffed big time

“George W. Bush has subverted and violated the principles of democracy by:
1. Providing misinformation to the United Nations Security Council, Congress, and the American people overstating the offensive capabilities of Iraq, including weapons of mass destruction, as justification for military action against Iraq.
2. Repeatedly manipulating the sentiments of the American people by erroneously linking Iraq with the terrorist attacks of September 11th by Al-Qaeda.
3. Repeatedly claiming that satellite photos of sites in Iraq depicted factories for weapons of mass destruction in contradiction with the results of ground inspections by United Nations teams.
4. Stating that “Saddam Hussein recently sought significant quantities of uranium from Africa” in his State of the Union Address after being told by the CIA that this was untrue and that the supporting documents were forged.
5. Influencing, manipulating and distorting intelligence related to Iraq with the intention of using that intelligence to support his goal of invading Iraq.
6. Invading Iraq with United States military forces.
7. Sacrificing the lives of thousands of American soldiers.
8. Killing tens of thousands of Iraqi civilians and conscripts.

March 5th, 2006 at 5:55 pm“He’s not a bad general, he’s a good military man.” — Solitaire
Clearly you mistake WAR CRIMINALS for ‘good military men.’
The UCMJ and the Code of Military Honor BOTH require lawful actions and disobeying unlawful orders.
He’s not only a bad general, he’s a criminal.
March 5th, 2006 at 6:00 pmOh, yeah, and don’t forget to put that list of Bushovik documented crimes on a scale with Clinton’s penis.
That’s some HUGE penis.
The entire Republican leadership is guilty of conspiracy, Obstruction of Congress, and failure to uphold the Constitution.
So, let’s see…Either the Bushoviks succeed in converting the US into a dictatorship in perpetuity — OR THEY ALL COME CRASHING DOWN AND TAKE YOUR PARTY WITH IT.
Good riddance…you’re really betting the long odds in your epic self-destruction, Seth. Just like that cokehead prez of yours.
March 5th, 2006 at 6:16 pmWhat’s wrong with you people? You’ll never get to be millionaires at this rate.
You bleeding heart liberals make me laugh. Stop misleading these poor deluded minds. They’ll never get to be millionaires if they waste time on left wing delusions. We’ve got a war to profit from… You can be the (Rich) Quick or the Dead. I’ll take Rich. Richard Quick

March 5th, 2006 at 6:47 pmPace may be deluding himself that he is a good soldier — there were many good soldiers in Hitler’s army.
March 5th, 2006 at 6:51 pmI guess a liberal thread on Bush is never complete until someone mentions Hitler.
March 5th, 2006 at 7:08 pmAs repeatedly stated by the prez, we went there to remove Sadaam from power. When we achieved that, our mission was accomplished (oddly, ALSO stated by the prez). By succumbing to this mission creep (Remember when they criticized Clinton for that in the Balkans?), we have placed ourselves in the peculiar position of siding with the Shia islamofacists such as Muqtada al-Sadr (As I recall his Mehdi Army killed eight of our troops in April 2004 alone.)and opposing the Sunnis who are NOT religous extremists.
Before the war Iraq was a fairly progressive country with an inclusive, albeit one party, government and a constitution that secured basic human rights and freedoms. Unfortunately, it had been taken over by a madman and his sick cronies. We should have removed Sadaam and his henchmen from the government but otherwise left it and the Iraqui Army intact. Had we done so we MAY have been greeted as liberators, at least by the educated class. Instead we were hellbent on dismantling all vestiges of the Baath government in order to make way for (the neo-con darling) Ahmed Chalabi to run the country as a proxy for Halliburton (et al).
March 5th, 2006 at 7:19 pmNow the Baathists have become insurgents and are employing Abu Musab Al-Zarkowi’s terrorists to destabilize our puppet regime and remove us from the country. While it may seem like surrender for us to withdrawl, I submit that the ONLY reason for this strange Baath/Zarkowi relationship is our presence there. Zarkowi has nothing to offer the Baathists after the war but to destroy them and establish a medieval theocracy there. (That’s what they wanted before our invasion, remember?)
Our presence in this civil war only increases Al-Qaeda’s recruitment efforts and hardens the anti-American feelings of progressive Iraquis, thereby furthering the goals of those who are out to do us harm. (Kind of like Reagan’s dismantling of Carter’s plans for energy independence, but I digress.)
We should follow the advice of Rep. Murtha and withdraw. We are only making matters worse by staying.
P.S. Don’t forget that those Generals that refused to do the two-step to the Neocon Military Delusion Rag were summarily ejected from the ballroom. Looks like Pace is simply making a strategic withdrawal from reality.
March 5th, 2006 at 7:32 pmGeneral Pace has supplied “Today’s Mantra.”
March 5th, 2006 at 7:36 pmPPS Read about Iraq’s pre-war constitution here:

“What does it profit a man to gain the world and lose his soul?”
Nevermind. You traitors to the Constitution never heard of the guy who said that anyhow.
March 5th, 2006 at 8:44 pmIntersting comments from one general, considering these comments the same day from a cohort:
“We’re in a civil war now; it’s just that not everybody’s joined in,” said retired Army Maj. Gen. William L. Nash, a former military commander in Bosnia-Herzegovina. “The failure to understand that the civil war is already taking place, just not necessarily at the maximum level, means that our counter measures are inadequate and therefore dangerous to our long-term interest.”
No doubt another left-wing conspiracy to sap the morale of our troops. Or…denial aint just a river in Egypt.
March 5th, 2006 at 9:44 pmand according to someone very close to me that is serving in iraq as we speak said it’s going great if you like bombs and bullets!!!
March 5th, 2006 at 10:34 pmIs Rummie THAT intimidating to all of his Joint Chiefs chairmen? What a pity…a four-star marine and no spine. Shinseki is still the only one who told it like it is, and all his successors seem to see him as an object lesson.

Gen. Pace’s comment speaks volumes about precisely what is wrong in Iraq. If you can’t tell from a comment like that what condition we are in there you must still expect to find WMD someday soon. In Vietnam we were told that light could be seen at the end of the tunnel, unfortunately it was the muzzle flash from the end of the barrel.
March 6th, 2006 at 12:21 amIs it time to shut up and pick up the only thing that this administration seems to understand (but has no idea how to use) . . . a gun? Don’t you all think that “what-do-we want?-Peace.-When-do-we-want-it?-Now.” is starting to sound just a little weak. Are you all waiting for your elected officials in D.C. to do something? Hello . . . is anyone home or are you all home, ranting online and feeling good about it? Are anyone of you willing to stand in front of a tank (or Hummer) for what you truly believe in? Ahhhh, the internet – the new, great hiding place.
March 6th, 2006 at 12:31 amGeneral Pace is delusional and unfortunately he represents the average officer in our military now! They have become stupid ass kissers of Emperor Bush, in the same way that Hitler’s officer corps were to him! Every officer like Pace must be court-martialed and drummed out of the military in disgrace, and/or given prison terms for violations of the Geneva Conventions! Like authorizing torture and intentional killing of civilians in Iraq!
March 6th, 2006 at 1:38 amThings are going very, very well?
Only a very, very stupid lying bastard could say this. With the military of this country being led by very, very stupid lying bastards it can only get worse.
Goodbye, America. It was great while it lasted. And now, into the future, Darkly. It’s just a question of time before the American military turns against the people. It will happen just as surely as the American government was taken over by a coup d’etat and was turned against the people.
Oh, and all the democrats who voted for the new, expanded Patriot Act – Thanks for NOTHING, you treasonous bastards.
March 6th, 2006 at 2:07 amDumbest most ignorant American General I have ever seen on TV. You know don’t you that Rumsfeld had a purge of the top generals in Bush’s first term and the ones he kept were the most politically reliable.

His objectives are probably different from mine. It is true that Haliburton is making lots of money. And Bush has the advantages of being a wartime president, which makes him king. So from the perspective of the Commander in Chief, everything is going swimmingly.

I’m trying to imagine what is actually going on inside this guy’s head, and came up with something like this:
“Okay now.. stay on message.. stay on message.. stay on message .. stay on message … stay on message.. oops I’m blinking too much … I wonder if they’re going to string me up by my toes… stay on message.. damn my head hurts… I think I better avoid any returning service members… stay on message… stay on message… why yes things really are going.. going.. going..”
I wonder if this tool knows the meaning of fubar.

March 6th, 2006 at 6:35 am#54, get you head out of your ass and observe that this thread is about a “good soldier” committed to the killing of innocents at his commander-in-chief’s whim. Comparisons to the “good soldiers” who served under Hitler are not only justified, that are perfectly appropriate.
March 6th, 2006 at 7:29 amThe General is a lier employed by Bush, that is understandable, but what gets me is how Russert let’s him tell these bold face lies, and go unchallenged, Meet the Press is a total Joke.
March 6th, 2006 at 7:31 amI wish someone would write a book about the disgraceful behaviour our current crop of active generals have displayed during this Iraq misadventure. It would make good reading, and be a rich source of ethical misbehaviour case studys, at the military academys.. Torture???distorting news itmes like Tillman and that female soldier taken prisoner??Professional soldiers???Rather, professional sychophants, liars extradinaire, sucking up for their next star, and in so doing disgracing the uniform they wear. I watched this “professional” on TV, and was shaken to my old es marine bones, when I heard those words muttered about how good things are in Iraq. How does he sleep nites?
March 6th, 2006 at 8:41 amI caught the re-run of MTP again last night:
March 6th, 2006 at 10:00 amRussert let Pace get away with outrageous statements, predictions, and opinions – yet, when he later interviewed John Edwards, he continued to play film clips and quotes from Edwards in 2001, 2002 and 2003, AFTER Edwards initially explained that he was wrong about Iraq, and his decision was wrong.
What was Russert looking for after the mea culpa that began Edwards’ interview, except to humiliate Edwards?
This is the typical interview by the Bush shill, host of MTP; he doesn’t stray from his scripted questions regardless of the answers already received – and worse, he offers no follow up questions to any outlandish claims or outright lies by the Republicans on his program.
“Goodbye, America. …It will happen just as surely as the American government was taken over by a coup d’etat and was turned against the people.”
THE STATES STILL STAND. Work in your state to repair your voting rights.
My experience tells me, however, that people with the most dire view are just coddling their laziness.
“Oh, and all the democrats who voted for the new, expanded Patriot Act – Thanks for NOTHING, you treasonous bastards.” –Sarah
The bill would have passed with or without their votes. While you would like our remaining representatives to split their veins and die heroically, the fact is that the Democrats are holding their caucus together, which is a primary value in a COUP.
March 6th, 2006 at 3:16 pmHi, uh, general.
This one’s my rifle, this one’s my gun… one’s for fighting… the other is to put inside in your mouth and PULL!
There now, the war just got SO MUCH better!
March 6th, 2006 at 3:23 pmIs that #52, Richard Quick for real? If he is, he is the Devil who has shown up to tempt people.
March 6th, 2006 at 5:27 pmI’ll remember this birthday for all the wrong reasons….
“OK. Just WHAT has the U.S. done for us”?
“…killed our children”.
“Yes, OK. Killed our children. I’ll give you that one, but what else has the US done for us–”
“Brought disease and slaughtered entire townships”
“OK. Brought disease and slaughtered entire townships. What else–
“Stolen our oil, wrecked our infrastructure and illegaly occupied our country”.
“Yes, yes OK. But apart from killing children, disease, township slaughter, resource theft, illegal occupation, JUST WHAT-
“Doing Israel’s lying genocidal bidding”.
“ALL RIGHT ALREADY. Now, APART from killing children, disease, township slaughter, resource theft, illegal occupation and doing Israel’s genocidal bidding, just what has the US done for us??”
“Aah, eer…bought peace?”
“OH PEACE – FUCK OFF!!!”

The Value of George Orwell
By Charley Reese
The phrase “war on terror” is a phony metaphor. We are not at war. Ninety-nine and 99/100ths percent of the American people are living the same way they’ve always lived. We have troops in Afghanistan and Iraq fighting an insurrection that our invasions of those countries caused. They are at war – a war of their own country’s making – but the rest of us are not. Waving a flag or putting a bumper sticker on one’s car cannot be called a war effort.

March 6th, 2006 at 9:35 pmI am sure Negroponte thinks it is going very well, “My look at the well thought out death squads.” Nice work on the dome boys. Now fuel the fire and keep us there. Cha ching

Hope you continue the good work. This country needs you. You are becoming a national treasure. Yes, I listened to Pierce just for a few minutes and almost gagged when I heard what he said. I used to watch Russert regalarly, but I have given up on him. I attend mass instead, so that I am not tempted to switch him on. Reality has not set in on these folks in washington from GW on down. We lost this war 3 years ago. We should have left after Saddam was found. This is 20/20 hindsight, if we knew anything about mid-eastern history.GW has 3 more years, which means it is going to cost the US taxpayer another half a trillion dollars and we are going to be worse off than we are today.
