South Dakota governor

By Nico Pitney on Mar 8th, 2006 at 12:47 pm

South Dakota governor

runs away from sweeping abortion ban. “Gov. Mike Rounds emphasized Wednesday that the legislation he signed into law ‘isn’t my bill‘” and if it faces a referendum this fall, he won’t “actively campaign either way” on the issue.

  1. Andrew says:

Of Course He Is! They didn’t pass it to ban abortions in South Dakota! They did it because the GOP Command Center ordered them to as part of the war on abortion! They agreed to sacrifice their own political careers in order to serve a higher cause, that of the American Taliban Religio-Fascists!

  2. wisedup says:

then why did you sign it,gov…hmmmm..?????

  3. Craig says:

If the South Dakota governor was so concerned about this not being “my bill” why did the little right wing fascist sign the bill into law?? If he was this concerned, why wasn’t the bill tossed in the garbage sans signature? Looks like the governor of South Dakota is taking some lessons from Reichsmarshall von Rove’s play book.

  4. Craig says:

Andrew – great descriptor. I assume I can use your “American Taliban Religio-Fascist” moniker in communications with the Dubster and other Repugnican mouth pieces?

  5. Mary Poppin says:

Wisedup I had the same question, why did he sign this. Is this Governor up for re-election in November? I hope the people in South Dakota has enough sense to get rit of this guy and all the Right Wing nutty Republican that vote for this.

  6. Zookeeper says:

You signed it, Gov Rounds, it’s yours. Quit whining.

  7. Jamie says:

Bush has signed a new executive order today giving “faith based” organizations a bigger role in disaster response. Guess if you can’t fix DHS or FEMA then pass the buck LOL.

  8. Punchy says:

Wow. This guy just set a new world speed record for fastest flip-flop in history. What a f’in joke of a man. Can’t even cop to his own mistakes.

  9. Craig says:

Mary – I lived in North Dakota for six long years. There are people in North and South Dakota who write “VOTE REPUBLICAN” on the side of their barns big enough to take up the entire side of the barn!! Getting them to not vote Repugnican takes a near miracle in either Dakota. Why North Dakota has 3 Demos in Congress and SD has 2 baffles the hell out of me. But if George Bush’s disapproval rating is only 60something percent, then I guess anything is possible.

  10. bobcat_grad says:

    Ahem…

“THEN WHY’D YOU SIGN IT INTO LAW?”

(I normally hate caps-lock posts, but this one was begging for it.)

  11. AkaDad says:

I am man from South Dakota. I am a Republican. I can sleep with any woman at any time. I am stud. You are woman. You cannot sleep with any man at any time. You are whore. Spread legs be punished. Men special. Men know whats best for womans womb. Trust us. Birth control bad. Fetus more special than woman. Protect fetus from slut. Man owns sperm. Man owns egg. Man must make morality. Woman must make baby. Wife must submit to man. Headache no excuse. Make me sandwich. Now.

  12. Jon Nightengale says:

Being virtually the only Democrat in South Dakota (a state that hasn’t had a Democrat governor since the 1970s), I can say that the best thing about all of this is that for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction, meaning the left becomes more unified while the right splinters over this extreme, insensitive bill.

  13. Hardy Haberman says:

I don’t know about South Dakota, but in Texas we call that Chicken S&*t. If the Govenor is going to sign a law he doesn’t back, he is a liar. But wait, he is Republican, so that goes without saying.

  14. bobcat_grad says:

    #11 –

Summed it up well. You should have signed it, “Mr. Grok Ughman”

Republicans motto: “Keep the government out of my wallet but firmly entrenched in my wife’s/daughter’s/sister’s/niece’s uterus.”

Can any right wing conservative out there tell me how wanting to outlaw abortion is not religously motivated? Are you not trying to legislate your religous beliefs on people who may have other religous beliefs?

That sums it up nicely as well

Wonder who’s eating his Lunch? My questions and Thoughts are this . Little Girls are molested by a family members and some of these little girls beome pregnant by these family members this means that a 9 or 10 yr old girl will bear her uncles, fathers, brothers, cousins, next door neighbors babies.

What are the religous right, the right to life, operation rescue and other groups that opposes a womans right to privacy createing? Incest babies, rape babies we are looking a society of forced angry women and girls who will abuse these children. This stands to reason as a woman I would not choose to look at my father, brother, uncle born or unborn child that would exact a heavy emotional price .What type of a culture of life is this adminstration creating?

Women under these bills are becoming State owned Property .When we as women lose the right to govern our own bodies we have lost all.

Tomorrow in Tennessee the same bill is being passed by three right wing men. Its an age old attack on women.

Men hate women since its more men that head up these organizations and men who are introducing these bills.

There will be a lot of girls and women die in this country along with the very fetuses these groupo’s are saying they want to protect.

Backdoor abortions will be the new killing fields in this country among the poorest of women.

I really hate deeply hate this reichwing movement.

While cycling this morning , I thought about who would I vote for if the election was between gwbush and his twin bin laden and I couldn’t answer that question as they both share the same traits.

  18. Zookeeper says:

One thing the men in SD have to look forward to is DNA paternity testing and child support for 18 years. Didn’t have that in the “good old days.”

  19. bobcat_grad says:

    State Rep. Bill Napoli (R):

“A real-life description [of an exception to the abortion ban] to me would be a rape victim, brutally raped, savaged. The girl was a virgin. She was religious. She planned on saving her virginity until she was married. She was brutalized and raped, sodomized as bad as you can possibly make it, and is impregnated. I mean, that girl could be so messed up, physically and psychologically, that carrying that child could very well threaten her life.”

So, only religous virgins who have been brutalized, raped, sodomized, and impregnated are going to be messed up physically and psychologically. Well hell, someone needs to tell all those non-religous, non-virgin women who’ve been raped that they shouldn’t be upset about their situation. They have nothing to worry about.

State Representative Bill Napoli goes to the top of my Assclown List.

  20. Manuel says:

One thing the men in SD have to look forward to is DNA paternity testing and child support for 18 years.

Question from male in S.Dakota: “DNA ?? What’s that ?? Another goverment agency ??”

    Comment by bobcat_grad — March 8, 2006 @ 1:33 pm

The religious right have convinced their base that they need a law to protect them from getting an abortion that they didn’t want anyway.

  22. Mary Poppin says:

The problem is it’s a men that are bringing these bills up. If a man had to have a baby their would be abortion clinics all over the place. Some of the attitudes of these Republican men are disgusting.

  23. THOT'S n TN says:

Bobcat-grad I don’t think he understands rape. How many college students are dated raped when my daughters were in college I couldn’t sleep because of that fear for them.

This guy is about as sensitive to women and girls as a steel pipe.

He might want to ask some of the young girls that have been found rape and dismembered by older men
the physical and emotional pain.he might want to ask an adult woman who was raped by her father, brother, uncle, cousin when she was 5 an up.

This is about the War On Women by the extreme right wing men.

The Deadbeat Dad bill has been gutted by his jerkbushco

How many fathers skip out on their children?

These bills gives a rapist/sex abuser the right to the child commited by his crime and the woman or girl will forever have that bastard in her face.

  24. Miro says:

    But he DID SIGN IT.

  25. skiddlybop says:

Let’s be clear on what this all means….

It’s the ROUNDS SOUTH DAKOTA RAPISTS AND INCEST RIGHTS LAW. Let’s always call it what it is.

It preserves rights of rapists to ensure that babies of rape are kept inside of their victims.

  26. ixion says:

It’s all about rapists’ rights. This administration is determined that rapists not be denied their God-given prerogative to forcibly procreate. If uncle Perv wants to hop on board his twelve year old niece, no meddlesome modern medicine should come between that hateful couple and their unwanted little baby. The message here is clear: if you are a rapist looking to leave a legacy – and hell, what rapist isn’t? – MOVE TO SOUTH DAKOTA AND LIVE LARGE.

Can any liberal out there tell me how legalizing abortion, which is murder, can be approved by any religion? What religion condones murder? Of course we are motivated by our religion. Aren’t you? Tell me specifically, what line in the constitution actually proclaims abortion to be legal? The Roe v. Wade is just bad law. Period. It needs to be overturned. Now, if individual states want it, that is a different story. To force this on the rest of us is just wrong.

  28. Marie says:

That’s not your “bill?” Is that not your signature?

  29. cynical ex-hippie says:

#27 Can you tell me how cancer is condoned by any religion?

Half of all abortions are spontaneous, meaning they occur on their own (commonly known as miscarriages). What your law does is two things:

    1) If a doctor has to choose between saving the mother or child, he must sacrifice the mother or at least wait until it is too late to save either.

    2) Every miscarriage becomes a potenial crime scene, triggering a police investigation.

Is that really what you want?

As for your question about the consitution, it’s Amendment IX. If you’re serious about being pro-life, you need a constitutional amendment stating that life begins at conception, and be specific. Assign a SSN immediately after sex, or whenever your religion dictates.

Because you sure aren’t going to abide by science in this matter.

  30. Lisa W. says:

Mary P. – he signed it because he’s gunning for Tim Johnson’s Senate seat. It’s not just about the bill; it’s about the money that will be flowing in, unaccounted for (anonymous), that will be funding the ‘law suits’ to defend this legislation in court.

I’m so sad to be living in a state that wanted to make this kind of statement.

  31. Johanan Raatz says:

To Bobcat grad. I can tell you that my beliefs on abortion are not religiously motivated. I beleive that the the law in South Dakota is a progressive bill which will further fetal rights which is why I support it not because of religious reasons.

  32. cynical ex-hippie says:

South Dakota, Kansas, and the rest of the sparsely populated middle states are so far out of the mainstream they don’t even know what mainstream is anymore. When they say “Americans want this” they mean themselves and 3 neighbors.

  33. cynical ex-hippie says:

#31 Since you’re applying reason and not religion, can you address my points in #29?

  34. Marie says:

Can a pregnant woman claim an embryo as a tax deduction?
Will miscarriages be investigated as possible crimes?
Will pregnant women be indicted for risky behavior potentially having a negative effect on the fetus?

  35. Happy Bunny says:

I for one am proud of South Dakota for making such a bold law. I will never understand why there are laws protecting innocent animals from being hunted or killed by their owners, and not laws to protect innocent people!

  36. cynical ex-hippie says:

If you were in a burning building and had to choose between saving a 5 year old child, or saving a freezer with 100 frozen embryos, which would you choose to save?

  37. cynical ex-hippie says:

Great idea. Introduce a law to allow pregnant women to claim a tax deduction. In the case of in vitrio fertilization, the couple should be able to claim all fertilized eggs as tax deductions. For the cost of one high end freezer and a visit to a fertilization clinic, you’ll never pay taxes again.

  38. cynical ex-hippie says:

If you live in South Dakota, if you know a pro-life woman, if that woman has a miscarriage, and you want to be really cruel… call the sherrif and say you suspect she had an abortion, demand an investigation.

  39. The WB42 5:30 Report With Doug Krile says:

    The Governor Got Suddenly Smart…

South Dakota’s Governor. Not exactly sounding like he really supports that bill banning abortions. The bill he signed….

  40. Spudge_Boy says:

Can any liberal out there tell me how legalizing abortion, which is murder, can be approved by any religion?

Who gives a fvck about your religion?

    What religion condones murder?

According to Bush and the trolls here, the Christian religion condones murder of Muslims on a daily basis.

Of course we are motivated by our religion. Aren’t you?

Nope, because rather then have a 2000 year old fairy tail tell us what to do, we think instead.

Tell me specifically, what line in the constitution actually proclaims abortion to be legal?

None, but it does say the right to the persuit of happiness. You got kids? They can really piss you off.

The Roe v. Wade is just bad law.

    In your narrow little mind.

    Period.

    Talking about female genitailia again.

    It needs to be overturned.

Great, I hope you do, so the republicans lose all of the fence sitter votes. Have fun.

Now, if individual states want it, that is a different story.

    And we will.

To force this on the rest of us is just wrong.

Nobody has ever forced anybody to get an abortion. You are crazy.

  41. Curious says:

    1) Has anybody interviewed Carrie Rounds (Mike Rounds’ daughter, attends U of SD according to governor’s web page), what she thinks of this?

    2) Does everyone who voted for this law (most SD legislators are male) promise to enforce this law on all female descendents?

  42. Denbeau Alimere says:

I am Canadian. My wife was having difficulty conceiving (I was helping as best I could), so we were tracking data very closely, and can prove without doubt that our daughter was conceived on a trip to the U.S.
If life begins at conception, can she now claim American citizenship?
Instead of tourist babies – which involve a bit of hassle and mess – will we now have tourist quickies? A one hour jaunt across the border at Niagara Falls and presto, another American citizen?

  43. Mary Poppin says:

Marie I had a pregnancy that the fetus died and the after birth started to grow. I had to have a D&C. If the Doctor decided to not perform a D&C I would of died. Their was no baby their. I was sick from the time I got pregnant to the time I had the D&C. I could not get pregnant for a whole year. Now these Religious Nuts are going after women that has a miscarriage. This is insane.

I read an interest article on Hawaii. They are going to pass a law that Doctors can perform an Abortion in the Doctors office. I wonder what the Religious nut will think of this?

  44. Cyra Brown says:

#27- And just how many “stays of execution” did GW Bush issue while he was the Governor of Texas ? How many “pardons” did he issue ? How many sentences were commuted to “life in prison, without possibility of parole”? Well…??? I am sure we would all like to know. I know you WANT it both ways, but that is not how it works, no matter how much you pretend otherwise. Execution is just another name for murder, like it or not. My guess is “not”.

  45. Craig says:

Maybe the answer to all of this is to allow, without argument, every hair-brained concept the American Taliban Religio-Fascists want to become law. Give them everything. And then when they finally realize how much oppression they have brought on themselves they might, just might, realize what fucking dolts they are. Isn’t it ironic as hell that the United States of Theocracy was settled by europeans who sailed here to avoid religious persecution, and now we are being persecuted by religious wackos. Where do we run to now? Anyone want to move to Costa Rica?

  46. Cyra Brown says:

#27- NNNC, one other thing, KEEP YOUR FU*KING NOSE OUT OF MY VAGINA !!!! YOU were NOT INVITED !!! And I DO NOT GIVE A SH*T WHAT YOU THINK !! ARE WE CLEAR ?!?

  47. Cyra Brown says:

Sorry, gang, I just couldn’t take it anymore. Sometimes you just have to be blunt, and loud. Bygones.

  48. Marie says:

#43, I am sorry to hear of your personal experience.
The religious nutcases think everything is so black and white, when in reality, there are countless varying circumstances. In their zeal to convert the nation to their narrow viewpoint, they see nothing wrong in trampling on the privacy and rights of someone else.

  49. cynical ex-hippie says:

In many ways, Americans are re-learning the lessons of the past. De-regulate everything! Ooops, there go consumer protections, worker protections, and the environment. Turns out people had good reason to regulate these industries after all. Now abortion. Here comes another oops while a new generation learns why people in the past fought so hard for these rights in the first place.

And war. Oh, is nationalistic jingoism a bad thing? I wish someone from the 1930s could have told us that too.

  50. Bill Arnett says:

I accurately predicted that the SD governor would run away from this bill, although he did have the guts to sign it. The GOP will be “dead meat” if Roe is overturned and they know it. Watch, and be amazed, when the Supremes refuse to hear the appeal filed when the law is declared unconstitutional. If the Supremes do take it, the powers that be in the GOP (Dobson, Norquist, Robertson, Falwell, Rove, etc) will instruct them to support the overturning of the SD law on some technical ground.

The GOP IS NOT going to give up the millions they take in year after year from pro-life groups, so they will maintain the illusion that they are fighting for the overturning of Roe. Neither will they give up their primary wedge issue that turns out their base. Someday the pro-life movement will realize that they have had more advantage taken of them by the GOP than all the Indian tribes combined. So let’s wish SD all the best luck and wait to see how they act when they realize they have “been fooled again” by their fearful leaders.

Besides, even if they succeeded, we’d see 70-80% of the electorate will rise up and smite the GOP at the ballot box and finish destroying the GOP for all time.

    Spread the word.

You can also browse http://www.travelsd.com for telling the South Dakota Travel and Tourism department that you have cancelled plans to travel there until the legislature repeals the abortion ban.
